The author, aristocrat, Niccolo Machiavelli reveals in, "The Prince" qualities about principles that kings or presidents should follow or manipulate to maintain and keep their kingdom or country. Machiavelli defines the qualities of "One Those Things For Which Men, and Particularly Princes are Praised or Blamed" or "A Prince should Keep His Word", or "On Avoiding Being Despised and Hated". Thereafter, Machiavelli expresses and discusses to be successful as a prince and uses the qualities to become a well-organized state and satisfy the people and to keep them content. Machiavelli compares and contrast these qualities to the best strategy is to do what works best in a particular circumstance.

As far as, "One Those Things For Which Men, and Particularly Princes and Praised or Blamed" mentioned above, Machiavelli begins this very notorious chapter by acknowledging that what he is about to write might surprise, and even offend people. However, it is better to give advice based on what the world is actually like, and the way that politics actually works, then to give idealized advice based only on what sounds nice. In this passage Machiavelli declares that the man who "abandons what is done for what ought to be done, will rather learn to bring about his own ruin than his preservation," (page 46). Since so many people fail to act according to these standards in reality, continuing to be "good" can only weaken a ruler. Instead, Machiavelli states, "it is necessary for a prince.... to learn how not to be "good" according to the circumstances". Then, Machiavelli lists a number of the qualities that can bring a prince praise "liberality, mercy and trustworthiness" or blame, "greed, cruelty, and lust". Obviously, it is better

for a prince to be praised than blamed, and a prince would be loved completely by all his citizens if he actually possessed all of those praiseworthy qualities. However, no prince will have every good quality, and most princes will have at least a few of those bad ones. The key, then, is that the prince should hide from the people those vices that he may have, and to make sure that he seems to have as many virtues as possible.

Like the previous passage, Machiavelli talks about, "How a Prince Should Keep His Word". Obviously a prince should not lie or act hypocritically and should also live with integrity. However, it is also the case that many princes who have not kept their word have accomplished great things, and have even conquered other prices that have kept their word faithfully. Machiavelli's states, "And if men were all good, this rule would not be good; but since men are a sorry lot and will not keep their promises to you, you likewise need not keep your to them", (page 46). Therefore, even being a prince it is necessary for them to have a mind ready to turn for there own gain. However, even in our modern society government had broken promises to gain their position and be elected. For example, Robert Kotcharian, President of Armenia, promised welfare to families in need and donates money to education, but no promise has been accomplished. However, Mr. Kotcharian is trying to be elected for the second time, again with promises that was never successfully done. Prince should always seem to have virtues, even if he doesn't actually have them. Moreover, seeming to have virtues is actually better than really having them, since a prince is therefore not tied by the bonds of morality. If the prince does not feel any constraint of "virtue," a prince is better able to do what he needs to do in any given situation. He must have a mind "disposed to adapt itself according to the world," able to

do good when he can but also do evil when he must.

A prince should above all avoid being hated. "On Avoiding Being Despised and Hated, Machiavelli states, "that a prince who is understood to be of great merit is difficult to conspire against or attack. He declares that a ruler must have two fears one, concerning his subjects, and the other, concerning foreign powers" (page 4). Prince can guard himself against the hatred of his citizens by never seeming "frivolous, changeable or shallow," and instead seeming to follow certain unwavering principles of upright morality. By behaving in this way, a prince will avoid the greatest political danger. If a prince does not take care to avoid the hatred of his citizens, then, he will live in a state of constant fear. Machiavelli offers the example of, "Messer Annibale Bentivoglio, prince of Bologna and grandfather of the present Messer Annibale, was murdered by the Caneschi family, who conspired against him; he left behind no heir except Messer Giovanni, then only a baby. As soon as this murder occurred, the people rose up and killed all the Canneschi."

Absolutely, the prince, the king or the president should obtain these qualities to gain power, to achieve the final end of becoming and remaining the prince. In these passages mentioned above, "praised or blamed," or "prince keep his word" or "despised and hated" using these qualities a prince will not make himself look cruel and harsh encouraging discontent among his subject, and the people will be more grateful and more loyal and not be against him.
