When she finally got to the meeting the Mr. Summers told her it was nice that she could join then and she coyly responded with "[w]ouldn't have me leave m' dishes in the sink, now, would you Joe" (1). Back at that point in life women couldn't vote, be on a jury, or even work for that matter. Since women couldn't be on a jury that leaves all white males, and at that time black males couldn't be on a jury either. This would have left Mrs. Wright with a guilty charge faster than you could even say guilty. The males stuck with their kind back then, and since one of their brothers was killed, as they would have seen it for no reason and would have put her away for good.
Inequality not only plagued women and African Americans back in the early 100's it is still plaguing them today. However, now all minorities are plagued with it as well. It is still very difficult for a woman and an African American, and other minorities, male or female to get a job with leadership over a large group of people. Take the President for example, there still hasn't been a woman or any other minority to become president yet, or become CEO of a fortune 500 company. The white man is still locking its jaw of power and control, things haven't changed all that much. When Tessie ran late to the lottery she had to explain herself, when Tessie lost or won the lottery (which every way one would like to look at it) she wasn't even allowed to hold up that parchment of paper. Mr. Summers, the head of the lottery said "[s]how us her paper, Bill" (15). It wasn't good enough for Tessie to hold up the paper; Bill had to be the one, he had to show he was in charge.
