The operations management is the core function in any organization but responsibility for operations is often spread between many different functions and personnel. The importance of operations management has increased dramatically in recent years. Shorter product and service life cycles, better-educated and quality-conscious consumers, and the capabilities of new technology have placed increasing pressures on the operations function to improve productivity while providing a big matrix of high-quality products and services. Operations management plays a strategic as well as a tactical role in satisfying customer needs and making their firms strong competitors.

Operations managers determine what should go into an operating system, such as equipment, labor, tools, facilities, materials, energy, and information and how these inputs can best be obtained and used to satisfy the requirements of the market place. They are focusing on carefully managing the processes to produce and/or distribute products and/or services.

Usually, small businesses dont talk about operations management, but they carry out the activities that are associated with operations management. The technological change, quality of the product or service and timing are some of the factors in operating management. For that reasons Ries Graphics, family-owned small printing company located in Butler, Wisconsin makes the decision to expend in the uncertain economy. The company decided to invest $10 million into "state-of the-art equipment and 15,000 square-foot addition." [] By executing this decision, Ries Graphics would become more competitive. They would be able to deliver better quality product with quicker turnaround time. With the new tooling, Ries would be able to lower their internal cost and then pass some saving onto their customers. Additional internal saving could be obtain by increased productivity. One new press is much more efficient it is capable to do the work of the two old presses. Finally, due to the retooling Reis Graphics was able to change their manufacturing processes, which allow them to buy less expensive rolls paper instead of pre-cut sheets. This change created even additional savings by reducing wastepaper.

The new equipment and changes in the production processes done by Ries Graphics allowed them to improve order-processing time. The shorter order processing time would allow them to increase number of processed orders not only from current customers but also from newly acquired customers. They would be able to acquire new customers because they should have additional capacity and be more price competitive due to the more economical production processes. Additionally there should be bigger customer base due to the projected by Andrew Paparozzi, chief economist of the National Association for Printing Leadership [], industry sales growth up to 4.1% next year.

Why are there three Nation-states instead of one?

There are many possibilities that may be the reason in which these three nation-states are not unified as one. These three groups have many similarities. They each have mutually intelligible languages, historically common ancestry, which are the Vikings, they share the common religion of Lutheranism, and have many cultural attributes. These things suggest that there should be only one country instead of three different nation-states. There are many other things that may help to determine why there are three different nation-states instead of one. The history of these nation-states was not typically written down. Some information that has been found is that of folk tales that were written down centuries after they originated.

Basically, the battles over the control of Norway led to the three independent nation-states. The break-up of the Kalmar Union was the basic cause for the wars and the turmoil in Scandinavia. Below I have found some information documenting the history of each country, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. I have read a lot of different information and considered a lot before concluding that this a probable reason for three nation-states instead of one.

Custom essays on Why are there three nation states instead of one: Norway, Denmark and Sweden

The history of Norway begins with the Battle of Hafrsfjord, with Harold Fairhair as the leader, in 80 AD. This battle was won by Fairhair, which helped him to unite Norway into one kingdom. This made Norway the first absolute monarch in Scandinavia. Fairhair was known as the Nordic Sagas, he is the son of Halvdan the Black and his second wife, Åsa of Agder.

Then came Queen Margrethe, who is known as the most powerful monarch in Scandinavia. She was the wife of King Håkon VI Magnusson of Norway and the daughter of King Valdemar IV Atterdag of Denmark. She was married at the age of 10. When her father died in 175 she got her son, Olaf, who was 6, to be established as the future King of Denmark, and she was legal guarding, and when her husband died in 180,again her son was named to the throne of Norway. Unfortuanetly Olaf died in 187 without leaving an heir, and Queen Margrethe was asked to step in as regent of both Norway and Denmark. In 18, King Albrecht of Sweden, died without leaving heirs and she was asked to step in as a regent of Sweden as well. This led to a treaty known as the Kalmar Union in 18.This union between the three countries survived until 151 with some long and short breaks in between. Queen Margrethe pretty much reigned until her death in 141.

Sweden then managed to break out of the union under the guidance of noble Gustaf Wasa, who served as Regent of Sweden for several years later and in 15 he was named King of Sweden. He is best known for being a very violent king.

Then came the signing over of Norway to the King of Sweden by Emperor

Napoleon, the Danish-Norwegian king. The Norwegians did not participate

in the war at all and were not asked their opinion but just handed to Sweden.

Christian Frederik was the Crown Prince of Denmark-Norway at the time,

wanted to claim independence, which he had hoped would lead to a new

union with Denmark in time. He was elected as Regent on May 17th as

future King of Norway. He soon had to renounce the throne because of the

war between Norway and Sweden and went to Denmark to seek the throne

there. And in 188 he was named King of Denmark. He died in 1848 while

he was still the reigning King.

These historical battles and changing of rulers may have contributed to the separation of the countries. This being because of the fighting and the exchanging of a country. I think Norway left the union because they did not like to be tossed around as a pawn in Denmark and Norway's chess game. they felt that they too should have a say in which country they should be ruled under, if any.

In conclusion, Scandinavia is made up of nation-states because of the country's desire to be independent. Even though there are many similarities they share, it is based on the issue of control. Each country wanted to control each other or just themselves and with the breakup of the Kalmar Union, this was severed because of different rulers in each nation-state. I think that if Denmark and Sweden would have made an agreement and not fought over Norway they would have been able to be one country. But also the different rulers and their hunger for power made it difficult for the nation-states to settle on an agreement that would please everyone. Many different wars between Sweden and Denmark and the tossing of Norway back and forth under different rulers lead to what Scandinavia is made up of now.

Children are incredibly impressionable individuals whom seem to recall everything they encounter. Its natures way of helping the young learn about the bustling world which encompasses them. Because of this innate trait present in our young, it is crucial that they are exposed to a heavy dose of positive moral, character, and behavioral examples. In a genuine effort to provide quality entertainment for their offspring, parents flock to the nearest toy store to purchase games for their home video games systems, video games portraying violent acts and strong sexual themes. These games are in essence providing the negativity that most parents are trying to shield their children from.

Children obviously mimic what they see. They repeat what they've overheard mommy and daddy conversing about secretly no one is supposedly around. Children practice the latest fighting moves they saw the Power Rangers perform on their arch villain on Saturday morning television. Wisdom lends one to believe a child whom plays these adverse video games everyday will in some form copy what he is being exposed too.

Human nature in general tends to be more fascinated with the negative than the positive. If children are constantly exposed to the violence and sexual misconduct, it may slowly affect morals. Children would increasingly view this behavior as acceptable.

It is ludicrous to think anyone no less children can see or hear this stuff on a consistent basis without being affected. Rational children are still minors and require parental guidance. At the very least parents will having a more difficult time just trying to offset this negative learned behavior. These video games make parenting just that much more vexing.

Parents and society as a whole are better off finding another means of entertainment for our young. Today's games are just too adult in nature which will eventually lead to behavioral problems from our future generation.

Elements that built the credibility of a "brand new company"

• The SEC blackout restrictions though these restrictions were negatively perceived by the company, I think that they helped Lucent building its identity. Indeed, when the company disclosed his message, it was a big surprise for the entire market place. Thus, it must have created a formidable "buzz" and many questions ranging from "what is this company? what are they doing?", for unaware General Public, to "why AT&T has decided to separate his activities in three separate entities?" for investors, up-end consumers and VARs.

• The name and the logo the use of a garish color with lowercase letters in the logo as well as a theme name, were unusual practices among major industrial companies. To ensure a large adherence to the concept, the company carefully submitted the choice of the name to a wide palette of people (4% of which was general public). All these symbols out of the ordinary for a technology company must have captured a large portion of people's attention. In the first place, their motivation to learn more about this company must have distracted them from paying too much attention to the fact that it was a former division of AT&T. They were ready to hear the story Lucent wanted to communicate.

• The advertising campaign among the 1 desired image attributes selected for the new company, only 7% of them belonged to the past. While referring to the former belonging to AT&T and Bell Labs to ensure credibility of the new structure, management wanted to make a clear break with the unique telephony image and emphasized the numerous technological innovations available in the new company. The use of the human voice in both the broadcast and print advertising was determinant in creating the brand "persona" in the people's mind. It was the unique alternative not to have them think of the 15-years old "rock" that was AT&T.

Do my essay on Lucent Technologies case study CHEAP !

• The consistency of the message "question and answer" packages to be used as guidelines were provided to all employees having a potential contact with external constituents in order to ensure the consistency of the message. This was a key issue to enforce the credibility of the new promise. Indeed, after the surprise, investors and customers must have questioned the ability of the company to achieve a new contract with the same employees. Thus, contacts with the company had to prove them that the change occurred.

• The choice of the CEO the fact that the highest representative of the company was coming from a different company and even from a different industry, clearly showed to the market place that Lucent was different from AT&T. A few investors may have noticed that he was a former member of the AT&T board but the majority did not.

• The timeframe by being able to come up with a corporate identity in less than a quarter was also a demonstration that Lucent changed from a slow, not responsive style to a highly flexible responsive one.

However, despite all these efforts to create a new brand promise, the credibility of this statement belongs to the employees' capacity to makes it a reality. It is only through time and consistent quality of its interactions with the marketplace that Lucent will be accepted as a "brand new company".

• Strengths of the process

- The size of the survey involved almost 1,500 people in order to determine the awareness and perceptions of Bell Labs (7% of which were from outside the company).

- The sample involved not only national but also international companies, which is in line with the objective of the company to be a global actor.

- The results were broken-down by audience type which was helpful for the interpretation and the importance to be given to each audience.

- The choice of the most important heritages from the past among the 1 attributes that belonged to Bell Labs, 7% have been kept.

• Weaknesses the internal research and the missing steps

- The agency did not require neither from management nor from the cross-unit team to define the brand vision.

- There was no benchmark or ranking realized with the competitors for each attribute identified and the survey did not ask for the most important values to the customers.

- They did not ask for the reasons motivating their relation with S&T and did not determine their eventual needs.

- The desired attributes have been added by the cross-unit development team without validation by the consumers, the agency firm stressing the importance of getting senior management's approval.

- The validation of the positioning was done without feedback from the marketplace and without determining what would be needed to be changed in the current organization. As mentioned by Scott M Davis in his book, Brand Asset Management, "Critical to a brand contract is that, before the contract is made and its positive promises publicly stated, your organization determines how best to make them a reality".

Before starting the survey, or at least in parallel, the agency should have required a brand vision from senior management.

The agency took time to identify both the nontraditional (Microsoft, Disney) competitors and the traditional ones. They analyzed the points of differentiation required in terms of design. However, Landor should also have included a benchmark between the competitors' brand and T&S's brand to determine the key attributes that make the true differentiation.

Since Management want to add new attributes to the Lucent's brand, it would have been wise to obtain a feedback from customers in order to determine which one were the most relevant.

Finally, the most important omission, which may result in damaging the brand, is the assurance that all promises can be duly implemented and respected.

Transfer of the brand equity has been mainly achieved by adding to the name of the new company the "Bell labs innovations" tag line. The objective underlying this decision was to ensure the image of continuous innovation, quality and reliability that the Bell name owns.

A letter informing all main customers that Bell labs remains the source of innovation for Lucent Technologies could be a solution once the company is launched (SEC restriction passed).

• The symbol before the announcement was made, the Landor agency worked on the logo design, trying to reinforce the theme followed for the name (Energy). It is important to highlight this part because there is a risk that the company be required to drop their logo for offense to a religion. Indeed, the "innovation ring" is actually a religious symbol of Buddhism, called the "enso", recognized by most of the eastern religions (exhibit 1). Association of this religious sign to the millions of products the company expects to sell could be interpreted as an offense. The advertising agency should have done researches on the subject before proposing it to management.

• Announcement though the advertising agency was involved lately in the launching process, in order to comply with the restrictions of the SEC, his work was crucial for the success of the brand. Indeed, the visit of the Advertising Agency to the Bell Labs gave birth to the humanization of the brand, with the "Lucent Guy". Though it was only a voice, it helped creating the uniqueness of the brand, its own identity rather than a mere "former subsidiary of AT&T".

However, a mistake in the implementation was made when the ability to question about the new company identity was given to two sites only. As mentioned earlier, the support of the employees to the new corporate identity was the most crucial in the whole process. They are the only one who can make the carefully crafted identity comes true.

• Internal communication anticipation on the guidelines package and practices to be followed could have been anticipated. It would have avoided unnecessary panic among the employees, who once again needed to support the identity. However, the fact that AT&T and Lucent planned and prepared a coordinated message to give to the reporters enabled the company to keep this "panic" situation within the organization.

Training intensive training should be given in priority to sales and customer service clerks. They are the representatives of the new identity and their interactions with the customers may either consolidate the new identity or damage the brand by not respecting the "promises". This phase was handle with package guidelines which came late and might not be as effective as a 4 hours session with actual "role games".

• Institutionalizing the new identity to make the message clear that Lucent was one and unique company, all communication supports which were in contact with external sources (building, cars, web sites, sales, and product marketing …) had to be coherent and fit the new corporate identity. Inside materials, except business cards which are the passport of the employees to the external world, were not given priority.

However, tough the risk was limited with a list of "musts" and "shoulds", management should not have granted the divisions with the possibility to modify the standards. To ensure the maximum level of efficiency and unity, all communication supports should be coherent and consistent over the time and over the media.

• External communication a -phases advertising campaign was decided. The priority was given on building the brand personality and on introducing Lucent to the consumers. However, Management should rapidly consider "surveying" the consumer on their perception of the brand in order to validate or modify the brand promise that was elaborated.

Donne's fidelity to emotion as he finds it is understated, and his love poetry expresses attitudes ranging from despair to rage to infatuation, making it impossible to isolate his ecstasy, sensuality and cynicism. However, it is possible to identify elements within his poems which are fairly consistent. His attitudes towards the Petrarchan love tradition and Plato's works/philosophies are fair examples of consistent elements.

DonneAntithesis to Petrarchan Love Tradition

The Dreame Challenging the Petrarchan ideal since the mistress here is no mere donna angelicata; in her intuition of the speaker's mind, she's more than an angel with implicitly divine knowledge. Donne also does not place her on a pedestal as well

Custom Essays on Love Poetry

As lightning, or a Tapers light,

Thine eyes, and not thy noise wakd mee;

Yet I thought thee (For thou lovest truth) an Angell, at first sight,

But when I saw thou sawest my heart,

And knewst my thoughts, beyond an Angels art,

When thou knewst what I dreamt, when thou knewst when

Excesse of joy would wake me, and camst then,

I doe confesse, it could not chuse but bee

Prophane, to thinke thee any thing but thee.

Typically, Donne also goes on to argue for identification of purity and spirutality with physical consumation, saying that love is "not all spirit, pure and brave', except when it is realized in flesh.

The Cannonization

Donne mocks the cliches of the Petrarchan sonneteers in the following lines

Alas, alas, whos injured by my love?

What merchants ships have my sighs drowned?

Who says my tears have overflowed his ground?

When did my colds a forward spring remove?

When did the heats which my veins fill

Add one man to the plaguy bill?

Emotions of Petrarchan sonneteers were often described using melancholy tears and sighs, seasonal imagery and contrasts between heat and cold, all of which were twisted by Donne to attack the very sonneteers they originated from.

Amiri Baraka, also known as Imanu Amiri Baraka, was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 7, 14 under the name of Everett LeRoi Jones. He is a respected playwright, poet, novelist, and essayist who is best known for his exploration and examination of African American experiences and his affirmation of black life." He graduated from Howard University and then published his first work, a collection of poetry, Preface to a Twenty-Volume Suicide Note, in 161. His plays include "Dutchman" (164), which won critical acclaim during its off-Broadway performances. Two other plays, "The Slave" and "The Toilet", were produced later that same year.

Baraka also founded The Black Arts Repertory Theatre in Harlem in 165. In 168 he founded an organization known as the Black Community Development and Defense Organization, a Muslim group, he focusing on affirming black culture and aiding African-Americans in gaining political power.

Amiri Baraka is well known in the poetic world as an African American enthusiast. He has written many poems expressing his experiences as a child and an adult. The poem " In Memory of Radio" is considered one of his greatest. It has an interesting theme, a unique tone, and several poetic devices.

Order custom research paper on In Memory of Radio

The theme of In Memory of Radio is quite unusual. Baraka contrasts an imaginative world of childhood radio with an adult world, which inverts the word love to become an evol word. Within this adult world, the inhabitants are unable to understand the abstract concepts of love and make-believe. Baraka perceives his imagination through poetry and is therefore able to understand the abstract concept of love.

This poem seems to have a bittersweet tone. He writes as if he is in a dream and he cannot decide whether he can grasp love or if it is just an illusion. One line in the poem describes love as evil, a great example of a bittersweet comparison. As the reader continues to interpret this work it is very obvious that Baraka is trying to influence the real meaning of love.

There are many poetic devices in the "In Memory of Radio". It is a lyric and epic type of poem. Baraka writes many poems that continue on in several books. The Lyric type is expressing the feelings of the writer on the issues of love. There is no rhyme structure in the work; it's as if Baraka is just rambling about the true emotions that come into his mind. The entire theme of the poem is an oxymoron; again, a good example is the line stating that love is evil. There are some similes installed, especially were the author is comparing F.J. Sheen (an evangelist) to himself, and also, comparing himself to Adolf Hitler and Goody Knight. Personification is present in the line were Baraka is explaining that the shadows know all, giving a shadow a thought process. The poem ends through the irony of An evil word it is/ This Love, leaving readers with the sense that the true evil lurks in the hearts of men who have lost touch with the world of imagination.

Amiri Baraka uses his unique theme, his bittersweet tone, and several poetic devices to create his true style in the poem "In Memory of Radio". This poem is the expression of a man who is discouraged by love, but understands the concept of it. He seems to have many encounters with what life throws at him and most definitely in his world of imaginable love.
