Over the many years that have past, plays have been produced based on the events and the emotions that occur to people everyday. A theme that often affects the majority of people is the concept of tragedy, be it in love, luck or life. In the case of love, it is usually related back to people confronted by the challenge to find true love. This, however, does not always take place. The ages from classical to Shakespeare's era and finally to modern theatre reflect these themes of tragedy in love from what occurs to people, the attitudes the public have and the ideas about the human condition during the time a play was produced. The theme of tragedy is seen as one that treats human suffering. It is an imitation of a situation that is serious, of importance and affects everyone. Despite the general division of tragedies into classical (dealing with noble characters) and modern (dealing with ordinary people), there has been a constant, but less well known, genre of tragedy that has dramatised the current events of the time. (180)

The word tragedy came from the Greek word "goat song" and initially meant "a serious play'. Polished up by Greek playwrights and later by the philosopher Aristotle, it was seen as the most sophisticated dramatic topics for plays to be set. In classical theatre, tragedy took part in the plays that were performed.

An extract from the play Medea, tells the audience of a sorceress who believes she is betrayed by her husband whom she is love with. As a result of her judgement, she murders her children and carries away the corpses to bury them herself as a way of teaching her husband the wrongs. This play has great relevance to the theme of tragedy and although fantasy plays a small part in the plot, it brings through another theme, one of love and betrayal. The scenes in this play reflect society in its time, the acts of human nature and the challenge facing the characters to find true love and being hurt in the process as it not only dealt with the issues that the audience were confronted by, but also gives the pleasure of witnessing it occur to other noble characters. Greek plays of tragedy, when performed, encouraged the audience to consider the useless waste of fine human characteristics and the bravery of misfortune of human beings themselves. (1)

Order Custom Essay on What good family are doing right

In Curran's essay entitled " What Good Families Are Doing Right," she explains and offers some important suggestions that become guidance to a successful family. "When the family is working well, there are certain recognizable signs or symptoms," said Curran. She called these symptoms the hallmarks of the successfully communicating family. They are: The Family Exhibits a Strong Relationship between the Parents; The Family Has Control over Television, The Family Recognizes Unspoken Messages, The Family Encourages individual Feelings and Independent Thinking, The Family Recognizes Turn off Words and Put-Down phrases, The Family Interrupts, but Equally, The Family Develops a Pattern of Reconciliation, The Family Fosters Table Time and Conversation. Curran also thinks that communication is an important part in a family relationship, but it isn't always easy to have an honest communication. I believe that these are good symptoms to show the qualities of a healthy family.

I agree on one of Curran's hallmarks—The Family Listens and Responds. I have experienced this "Symptom" that lead to my healthy family. I remembered at a young age I lived with other family members in a foreign country. I have been separated from my parents for nearly six years living with my Aunt Lily in California. She doesn't have a family of her own because she is still single. There are no other family members living with us, just my Aunt Lily and me. The house seem to be too quiet and lonely and we have lived as two separate life style; she goes to work and I go to school; at home we have cooked our own dinner separately and do our own separate activities. I can hardly remember when we had a real conversation with each other; moreover I don't really experience a healthy family while living with her. Living apart from my family is hard enough as an individual. At first there were personal feelings and loneliness created, feelings that I couldn't find anyone to share with or problems that I couldn't find someone to help me solve. A "family" was definitely missing in my life. I needed someone to listen to my feelings or respond to my problems, I need someone who cared. But living with Aunt Lily doesn't provide this part in my life because she is too busy of living her life. My relationship with her decreased as time passed by and it certainly felt like living with a stranger under the same roof.

Even though, I lived far away from my real family, we still have a strong, caring family relationship that is connected between us. For all these years, they have listened and responded through letters and phone calls, especially my mother. She called me once or twice a month to see how I was doing and if I needed anything. She actually took time to listen to my personal feelings, unhappiness or problems. Unlike Aunt Lily, even if she was busy, my mother would make time for me. She listened, responded and gave me advice. When I failed a test or any personal failures, she encouraged me and told me not to give up. I will eventually overcome my obstacles, which I can improve and become a better person in dealing with life. When I told her that I am not confident, she gave me strength to built up my confidence and said to have faith in myself. She has become my role model every day in my life. Our communication continues to grow stronger each year by phoning and writing to each other. She actually fulfilled the emptiness in my life-- a family life that I missed having.

Family who really listens to one another and communicates means that they do really care for each other and this is how a healthy family builds up their relationships. Even though I am not physically living with my real family but mentally, I still can have a healthy family relationship. "Family" is really important but the most important ideal is to learn how to create and maintain a healthy family. One way is by reading Curran's nine hallmarks in creating a healthy family.

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in legalizing marijuana, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your legalizing marijuana paper at affordable prices ! The legalization of Cannabis sativa, or more commonly known as marijuana, has been a very controversial subject in America. Its uses are countless, and many consider it to be a very valuable drug. Marijuana should be legalized for cultural, psychological, and medical purposes.

Many different countries around the world associate marijuana with magical, medical, religious, and social customs. Many of these beliefs and traditions are still carried out today. In India, it is believed that an Indian god named Siva is portrayed as the Lord of the "Bhang' which is the drink made up of Cannabis leaves, milk, sugar, and spices. The herb is also used in Tantric religious yoga acts. An hour before performing a yoga ritual, the believer will drink a bowl of bhang after reciting a mantra. This helps the devotee with the goals of Tantra- to achieve unity of mind, body, and spirit through yoga. In Africa, a researcher visiting Congo came across a ritual where all of the ancient deities were publicly burned by order of the king of an Indian tribe. The king determined this decision by realizing that an array of tribal gods would barely serve as a merging force for his people. So he ordered the old idols be replaced with a more powerful one, Cannabis. Tribes in Africa also believe that hemp will fight and prevail over all evil. When going to war or to travel, they bring hemp to protect against malevolence. Jamaica is also known for its beliefs in marijuana, also known as "ganja" in the land. It is used for recreational uses, as well as for religious and medical reasons. Traditionally, lower-class Jamaicans start to smoke marijuana at young ages because of domestic use in the home. Members of the Rastafarian religion also use ganja as a religious sacrament (Historical and Cultural Uses of Cannabis and the Canadian Marijuana Clash). Cannabis is used in many different cultures and religions all over the world. America is supposed to stand for independence, a very fortunate characteristic. Many other countries allow their people to smoke marijuana, so how can our country that stands for freedom advocate freedom to other countries when America's own citizen's privacy is not respected? What about the foreigners that come to America to have the right of religion, when they can't even practice their sacred beliefs because what they believe is illegal in the country that is supposed to stand for freedom?

Many people also like to use marijuana for psychological purposes. In 10, researchers discovered receptors in the brain stirred by tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana (Goldberg, 140). This would conclude that the body generates cannabinoids for at least one or more reasons (141). Not only are these receptor sites found in the lower brain, but also in the cerebral cortex, which controls higher thinking (The World Book Encyclopedia, 561). This remarkable discovery could justify why many marijuana users say that the drug increases mental activities and creativity. The discovery of these sites may even help explain to alter the concept of time when marijuana is smoked, the delicate enrichment of perception, or even the ability to view the world with a sense of excitement and freshness. Cannabis may also be used as an intellectual stimulant. Marijuana assists the user to comprehend abstract boundaries, advance smoothness of relationships, and enhance insight and creativity (Goldberg, 141). It is also useful in gaining new views or to see problems from a different point of view (14). Because of this, it would be understandable to use marijuana as a preparation for intellectual work. It is only a matter of learning and experimenting for a marijuana smoker to make use of the changes in consciousness and mood produced by the drug. Users of Cannabis often have an enhanced appreciation for many things in life, such as food, music, beauty, and other sensual experiences. This drug has the ability to enhance pleasure, and even act as a form of therapy.

Marijuana can also be used for medicinal purposes. It has a long and continuing history for use as a therapeutic agent, and its medical resolutions are widely diverse. Marijuana could work wonders as a source of power when one is faced with excess exercise or fatigue (Merlin, 48). In fact, Indians traveling by foot have relied heavily on the herb as a stimulant, just as much as South American natives would have relied on cocoa (8). The juices from the flowering plant are enough to create a mixture to get rid of dandruff or pesky vermin from the hair (48). In the 170s, many people discovered that marijuana could ease unbearable nausea caused by cancer chemotherapeutic substances, and were found to be more effective than legal antinauseants (Goldberg, 1). The drug was also found to work wonders and increasingly lessen the pressure on the optic nerve in those suffering from open-angle glaucoma, and again proved to be more effective than conventional medications in progressive loss of vision caused by the disease (141). In the mid 180s, many with AIDS found that marijuana could once again alleviate nausea caused by the illness or by the medications taken to neutralize it. It even improved their appetites, and helped them to stop losing or even gaining weight. AIDS patients found that smoked marijuana was more effective than synthetic THC, which was legally available since 185 (14). In other countries, Cannabis is used to treat many diseases, disorders, and misfortunes such as insomnia, asthma, malaria, blood poisoning, and anthrax among many (Merlin, 4). In the United States, patients have learned how to obtain and use medicinal marijuana despite its unlawfulness. Many of those have reaped the benefits, and must only have to deal with the anxiety caused by the threat of arrest and their feelings about breaking the law. If marijuana were legal, terminally ill patients would be able to take advantage of this versatile drug with easier access and more inexpensive prices.

Custom writing service can write essays on legalizing marijuana

I believe that it is an individual's own free will to do what they please with their body and mind. Keeping marijuana illegal only takes from those own rights. I also believe that if the government were to legalize marijuana, they would have more control over the purity and potency of the drug and also the international drug trade could be regulated more effectively. A lot of money would be saved from the war on drugs, and more money could be put to use towards education, prevention, and treatment. Bibliography

Start by talking about Vitai Lampada

Late 1th century poem that talks about a young mans patriotic duty, and the important lessons that are to be taught at school. Starts with a public school cricket match. Describe this verse. Typical public school scene. Desperate situation, but of course it is not that desperate it is only a game. The boy encouraged to do the right thing to do his best no matter how hopeless the situation. Use quotations to help illustrate the points you make.

Next paragraph

Buy Dulce Et Decorum Est term paper

Second verse. This time the situation is desperate. Lots of quotation here, please. Almost melodramatic "river of death' etc. A bad situation, but described in distant terms and as if it is the soldiers fault that the square broke. People are about to give up morale is low but then the old school cry comes out. We must do our best for the sake of our country. (it is not really a schoolboy but even grown soldiers were schoolboys once). Go on now to next verse. This talks about how this sense of patriotic duty and honour is the most important lesson that must be passed down from generation to generation. It must be passed down like a baton in a relay race. Talk about the Latin phrase, Vitai Lampada, and how that means the torch of life and was old Roman saying.

Next paragraph.

Owen also makes use of a Latin phrase, Dulce et Decorum Est, pro patria mori, but uses it in a very different way to Newbolt.

Start talking about Dulce in detail. You should be able to do this quite easily, but use lots of quotations and explain them. Opening ideas young men reduced to old beggars etc. The real effects of the war.

Then after the gas attack we get Owen inviting the reader in to the action, when he describes the young soldier dying so painfully and slowly in the wagon that they flung him in. Talk about this at some length, and use lots of quotations that demonstrate the painful reality of the war.

Next paragraph

Then show how he finishes the poem, by asking people to realise that the famous statement is a lie there is nothing sweet or blessed about dying like this soldier has died. Therefore you have two poets writing within twenty five years of each other who give a very different view of war and talk about how Owen criticises those who persuade the young to do their patriotic duty it is not a game, and it is a disgrace to pretend that it is.

What makes an experience significant? For me, it's the emotion and the feeling of being changed somehow afterwards. Things have happened in my life whether I've wanted them to or not. Every experience I have gone through has affected me in one way or another. However, the most significant experiences are the ones a person can really change and learn from. Learning to ride a bike and a death in the family were both life changing events for me.

"Riding a bike is hard to do and takes time, but you will eventually learn how to." That's what my dad told me the first day he took the training wheels off my bike. It took me a while for him to convince me that it was time. However, I finally worked up the courage to do so one day. While I was in the house putting on my helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and everything else, my dad took my bike into the backyard. I felt a little hesitation walking out that backdoor. I began questioning myself about my readiness for this. I decided to put my fear aside and just go for it. My dad held the bike steady while I climbed onto it. He said that all I needed to do was to learn how to balance on the bike, and he would keep it steady until I felt ready. I started to pedal, but immediately stopped because my bike started to tip. I wanted to continue trying though. I wanted to learn how to ride my bike. The day went on with some progress. I was at the point where I could go a few feet but would have to stop and regain my balance. I became frustrated and decided to stop for the day. The next day, my dad told me to get myself on that bike and try again. I didn't think I would be able to ride it, but I decided to make an attempt anyway. I got on my bike and my dad was still holding on. I was able to go a greater distance and a little bit faster than the previous day because I had gotten a feel for the bike. My dad had to pick up his pace to keep up with me, and then I told him he could let go. He didn't right away, but he gently let go as I took off riding my bike by myself. I couldn't believe it. I kept saying, "Look at me! Look at me!" My dad was applauding my accomplishment as he ran inside the house to get the video camera. I was so proud of myself. I didn't need my training wheels or my dad holding on anymore. I had my first taste of independence and felt so grown up. I now wanted to learn how to do more things on my own.

While learning to ride a bike can be hard, losing a loved one is by far the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I lost my Aunt Betty on May , 00. I was having an exceptional day at school because I found out I had aced a couple of my tests. My mom was picking me up that day. I hopped into the car and could tell by the look on her face that something was wrong. I asked her what was wrong, so she pulled the car over to the curb and told me. I was in disbelief and complete shock. I couldn't hold back my tears. I tried to be strong, but it didn't work. My mom told me that we would be going down to Wilmington for the funeral that weekend, and I was not looking forward to going. I was grateful that my cousins, aunts, and uncles had decided to come down from Ohio to be there too. A private viewing room had been set up just for the family at the mortuary. Sadness filled the room. I had never felt so much pain in my life than when I saw my aunt. It was hard to see my cousins stare at their mother in the casket. I knew that I couldn't possibly imagine how hard it is for them. I suddenly had an immense reality check. I remember thinking to myself about how as I get older, death is going to be more involved in my life. I will be losing people who I have cared for so much and that I love. No matter how much I hate it and want to fight it, death is always going to be a part of life.

Every person has gone through an experience that has meant something to them and has been significant. It could be anything from learning to ride a bike or facing the death of a loved one. These are normal things that happen everyday, but the same emotion and insight that occurs doesn't happen that often. No matter what the event is, good or bad, I have never walked away from it feeling the same.

Procedure

1. Gather all materials

. Put on safety goggles

. Setup control experiment by, getting 60ml of soil and putting it in the bottom on the cup

4. Then place 4 seeds on top, being the same distance apart

5. Afterwards place 40ml of coil on top of seeds

6. When that's done, measure 0ml of water and water the plant

7. Do the same steps in other cups

8. Get a piece of paper, and label, control experiment, water.

. Do these same steps for Distilled, vinegar, sugar water, having cups for each substance.

10. Water plants every days, using the same amount of water (0ml)

11. Take data everyday, by measuring the height, width, color of leaves, # of leaves, and divide it by 1 each, to get average

1. Do all this for 15 days; observe the different changes a plant will go through.

Hypothesis

I predict that the distilled water, will make a plant go faster because, its more pure and will probably make get its nutrients faster. After the distilled water, I say that vinegar & water will make the plant go faster also. However, it wont make it grow as fast as distilled, because probably the chemicals that the vinegar contains, are strong and it will take the plant longer to retain its energy because the cause of vinegar. Water, will make the plant grow at a regular speed, and maybe even slower, because its competing with other chemicals to see which one will make it grow, but the thing about water is that sometimes it doesn't affect much on the plant. I say that sugar, will make a plant grow last because, the chemicals in sugar are very sweet, which will affect the plant and make its nutrient weaker, not full energized, so probably sugar will make the plant as a result to be rotten.

Conclusion questions

1. Why did your group select to study the experimental variable in your lab activity?

Well, my group and I decided to test water because, usually what people use to make plants grow is water. We thought that if water combined with other chemicals it would make a plant grow slower, faster, or even make the plant die. That's why we decided to see if water with other plants could affect the growth of bean plants.

. What areas did your group find the most difficult in designed this lab activity?

I thought that the whole designing of the experiment was very hard because, my group and I had mayor problems the first weeks, so we had to start our experiment over about times. The first time we designed our experiment, we thought we would use the chemicals; backing soda, aspirin and salt, but the control would stay the same as water. The first week we thought it would work ok. But it didn't, our plants had all very bad smell, they were drowning because the water wasn't evaporating, and they wouldn't grow a single root. So we threw those away, and we started thinking what was wrong in our designing of our experiment. So we tried it again, and the same thing happened, so we had to re-do our experiment over. That's when we decided he would change everything, the seeds, the experimental chemicals and the waive we measured. First we were measuring in grams, which was very hard because to accomplish that we had to do about 4 steps. So we then decided to measure in ml. After the first week or of changing our experiment, our plants started to grow.

. In what ways is a controlled experiment different from a non-controlled experiment?

Well, in a control experiment is when you have a certain variable such as water, and your controlling it. For ex, taking its proper temperature, making sure its being boiled or going through its freezing point or even condensing point, what I mean is that there is a human activity going on to control the variable. In a non-controlled experiment, its almost the same, your using the same variable but your not controlling it, instead your just leaving it freely, so there is no human response in the way. That's the difference between a controlled experiment and a non-controlled one.

4. Discuss the difficulties your group had in the careful and accurate collection of data. How do you think this affected the results of your lab?

The difficulties my group had were sometimes big, that we had to start over and start collecting data all over again. For example, in the collecting of my data, I sometimes forgot were I had placed my results and probably placed them somewhere else. That's why I had to re-it over. I thought it was very frustrating to take data about times every time I messed up because I had to see if it was very accurate. Other case is that sometimes I would forget a number and wouldn't include it, for that reason I would also have to measure everything of my plants again. I knew that this would affect the results of my experiment, which's why for every mistake I did I had to take my data over. This would affect the results of our lab, because imagine that if we collected our whole data wrong, we would probably say that sugar water made a plant grow faster. For that reason it was very important to get our data exact or else it could wreck our entire experiment and not have the right results, instead we would have false results.

5. What were the most interesting parts of this lab activity? What did you find the least interesting?

I thought it was very interesting to see the plants different stages, and also how I got to know more about plants, and not just think of them as a leave, stem and roots. I liked seeing how a plant developed through its different stages of growth by germination, and how an embryo became a young plant in just a few weeks. I also found interesting the way that plants use sunlight, water and the air around it to become a healthy plant. I really didn't like the fact that as soon as the plant is rotten or dead, it doesn't have its potential anymore, it's just a plant with a really bad smell, and a very nasty appearance that you really don't want to see. I really disliked the fact that I had to take data, it was the thing I hated the most, apart from it being very boring. however, the overall experiment was fun seeing how plants grow.

6. Was your hypothesis supported or rejected for each group? Discuss this in detail and try to explain the differences between what you thought would happen and what actually happened?

In the outcome of this experiment, it turned out that my hypothesis was rejected. I though that distilled water would of make a plant go faster, but it didn't. It turned out that Vinegar water made a plant grow faster by a growing height of 50.5 cm and a width of 1.cm. But only had an average of 1.7 leaves. Water came next with having an average height of 40.1cm and a width of 10 cm. This plant contained a really great amount of leaves, 7 leaves, which was the highest of our results. After water came distilled with a height of 5. cm and a width of cm. Which is very high, it had an average of 10 cm. All of these plants had success, but sugar didn't. Sugar had many problems when it came to grow. The first week it was doing fine but the next, I started realizing that the planted was starting to die, it also started producing a bad smell. In overall, I really can't say what plant had the best growing. I thought that the whole results would of turned out differently. The reason I say this because, you really can't tell which plant grew the most because, all the plants, except sugar, had different heights and widths and # of leaves. I mean vinegar may of have been the tallest, but distilled water had the most width in leaves and water had the most leaves, so I'm puzzled and I really don't know which plant had most accomplishment. There were a lot of differences of the way I thought the experiment would turn out to be, and what actually did happen. What I mean is that each plant had its different results, but like they were competing one can clearly see the differences of how each chemical reacted to the plant. What actually happened is hard to say, as I said before because of the results he had varied, that's why this whole lab is very awkward.

7. Discuss the experimental errors or anomalies in this lab activity?

In this lab, the only experimental errors occurred in the sugar water. I'd say that the other chemicals reacted extremely well in the plants. Sugar was the only one with difficulties. The plants that contained sugar water, every day they would become a darker color and the plant would not simply grow. It would stay the same. I really didn't like the bad smell that the plant was producing because, besides it smelling extremely bad, I think it may affected the way the plant obtained its nutrients and water, because the bad smell concentrated in a certain area, which probably didn't let and oxygen get into the plant. Another anomaly or mistake that the plant was producing was an extremely amount of moss. I don't know want was the cause of this experimental error, all I know is that it happened in a sudden way.

8. Design a color-coded graph for each area you studied in your data table?

(See next pages)

. Based on your graphs, explain the major differences and similarities of the plant growth between the groups?

Well, in the graph, one can say that there are major differences and similarities. One of the major differences is that in the first week, all the different heights were extremely varied. For example, water started with an average height of 1.46cm while distilled started with 7.cm, though distilled was very close with vinegar which had an average of 8.65cm. Sugar was the least with cm. I think that a major similarity is that in the area of width, they all pretty much started at the same paste. Water started at .85cm, distilled started at 1.cm, vinegar started at 1.5 and sugar started at 1.75, you can say that sugar was growing fast. I say that the major differences happened in other observations. During the days, sugar plant started dying, the water started to pop out roots but getting bigger, vinegar started flowering and distilled was like water, which started growing at a high paste. Water started having a lot of leaves, with an average of 10cm, while the other three, were similar. Distilled and vinegar had an average # of leaves of 1.5cm, while sugar had 1.. I think those are the major similarities and differences the different groups shared.

10. If you had to re-design this lab activity what changes would you make and why?

If I had the chance to re-do this experiment I would change it by using different chemicals and different seed, such as sunflowers. I would do these changes because, I'm tired of bean plants, and because every single experiment I have done since kinder, have always been bean plants. I would like to see another plants reaction using different chemicals and different seeds, I would like to see the other changes, and I could then compare them to the bean plants, to see the differences. The other chemicals I would use would be dough, coffee and lemon. Those would be the only changes that I would change to do this lab activity.
