Character Study The Cask of Amontillado
This story deals with a man that just can't take put downs in a comical way, but instead dramatizes this criticism to death. This is something that almost all of us can relate to; either being on the end of being picked on until you feel like just exploding, or on the end of presenting the criticism to your friend without the realization of disturbing your friend. This is apparently what has happened to Montresor and Fortunato. Fortunato has apparently said something so cruel to Montresor, which the narrator never elaborates on to tell us, that he has plotted revenge.
There is a couple things we need to know about Montresor. First off he is smart and he is not going to let anyone know of his plans of revenge, and secondly he is crazy. Montresor is the narrator so Poe lets dive into the psyche of a murderer. He shows of his smarts and patience from the beginning by his friendly actions towards Fortunato. He shakes his hand and tells him how is luckily met by Montresor because he has a pipe of wine that just might be Amontillado. Montresor realizes the weakness of his acquaintance to be wine and that this would spark the interest of Fortunato. This spark is the beginning of the plan of revenge Montresor because he knew that Fortunato would follow him to where the wine is and it just happens to be in his vaults away from the party where no one would hear him scream.

Another is that the alcohol was giving him courage and the ability to not care for himself but the excitement that came along with tasting the Amontillado. A they kept walking through the vaults I started thinking how stupid is Fortunato walking through this vault when Montresor is talking of bones laying against the walls. It made me realize that Fortunato is not just stupid, but he must also be an alcoholic.
When they finally reached the Amontillado Montresor once again insists on them returning from the vaults but Fortunato was too astonished with the wine, but only this time Montresor says that he must turn back. Fortunato stupidly does not go with him and this is when Montresor's plan finally come into play. He starts walling up the one part of the vaults. During the times he does this, he can hear Fortunato talking and he even talks back to him almost in a childish, mockingly way. Montresor does actually almost show a little resentment at one point when he is walling up the vault. It says that for a brief moment he hesitated and trembled. But it wasn't but a couple moments later that he was back walling him back up.
