At the same time, the use of illegal drugs has become a major problem in today's society. New research indicates that half of high school students will experiment with illegal drugs before graduation. There are many reasons people use illegal drugs. The most common reasons for drug use are peer pressure, availability, and curiosity.

One cause of drug use is peer pressure. There are very few people who will meet somebody who has not experimented with street drugs. Evidence shows that peer pressure is the biggest reason for drug use. It is very tempting for people to try drugs when their trustworthy friends offer them. Teenagers find it much easier to go with the crowd than to say no. Young adults feel that if they say no, their friends might not think they are cool, or they could make fun of them.

Another cause is the availability of drugs. It is believed that narcotics used to only be a problem in major cities, but many decades ago the problem moved to almost every town in America. Ecstasy (XTC) and crystal methampehtamines are two examples of very dangerous drugs. These narcotics can easily be made at home using harmful household ingredients such as cold pills, brake fluid, lithium, and ammonia. It seems likely that less opportunity for peer pressure would arise if these drugs were not so readily available to people of any age.

The third major cause is curiosity. Many people wonder what it would feel like to get high. After seeing drugs being used by their friends, the curiosity grows and they give it a try. For example, after being at many parties where marijuana is being used by his friends, John decides he is going to try it. He likes the feeling it gives him so he smokes marijuana at every party. With time he becomes bored with marijuana and decides to try cocaine with one of his friends and becomes an addict. This is a problem because the majority of users become addicted to many narcotics the first time they use them. Many people's curiosity leads to experimentation with different kinds of drugs because they are bored with the drug they have been using.

Write your The causes of illegal drug use research paper

In conclusion, billions of dollars are spent each year on lowering the availability of these drugs but the problem goes beyond the people who make and distribute them. Peer pressure and curiosity are major factors especially among teens. Better education about peer influence and the effects of these drugs will help people abstain. Drug addiction can lead to serious physical, mental, and financial problems. Almost everybody will run into drug use sometime in their lives. People need to learn that it is their decision whether or not to use drugs, not their friends'. They also need to understand that frequent use of illegal drugs could change their lives forever.

On October 5, 00, an international anti-war coalition group called ANSWER will

coordinate a march on Washington carrying banners opposing the Bush Administrations war

strategy. Countless articles can be found on ANSWERs web site criticizing U.S. military actions

Cheap University Papers on United We Stand

taken since the tragedy on 11. Their supporters come from every walks of life, religion, level of

education and socio-economic background. They believe that the Bush Administration lied to the

people, the Congress, and the United Nations when it waged war against Iraq for its own personal

gain.

ANSWER believes that U.S. soldiers are killing and being killed in Iraq in a war that

serves only the interests of U.S. oil monopolies and corporate elites. Comparing the Bush

administration with the corrupt and sadistic Hussein regime, that tried to take over Kuwait to gain

control of their oil fields. That is just not realistic. If Saddam would have succeeded in the

Kuwaiti takeover, September 11 would have been insignificant to what he would have funded in

terrorists actions against the U.S.. ANSWER coalitioners state that our troops are scared and

want to come home. I say our soldiers are heroes. They are remarkable. Naturally they miss their

home and loved ones and the rights and luxuries they enlist as Americans. But these brave

soldiers don't take those rights for granted. They know that they have to fight to protect our

rights form dictators who fund terrorists and threaten everything America stands for. Be

Americans and don't fund coalitions like ANSWER! "United we must stand! We must show our

solidarity against evil and terror. This war will show our power and our capabilities as a free

democracy and hopefully will cause fear in those unrelenting enemies. Our true enemies,

terrorists.

While American anti-war folks march in Washington on October 5, our troops continue

to fight for these people's rights to express themselves without being butchered, maimed or

murdered. The "Freedom of Speech" and the "Right to Assembly" are only two of a very long list

of our Constitutional rights. Saddam Hussein abhors the rights we enjoy as Americans. He

gained power through the creation of fear in his people who dared to speak against his regime.

In Iraq, death squads roamed the streets killing innocent men, women and even children. Rather

then taking the power and moneys from his countries oil fields to better Iraqi's lives, he took it

and funded terrorist actions against the "Free America". Our freedom proves his dictatorship is

immoral and depraved. The Bush Administration is acting in view of those facts. The anti-war

coalitions persecution of the American administration, only counteracts our moralistic values our

troops are trying to protect. Its highly likely old Saddam is having a wicked laugh at Americas

detachment from what makes us a most excellent conglomerate, our unity.

The United Sates is the richest country in history. Now it is spending more on war than

any government in history. But money spent to rebuild what was lost on 11, is not a price

America should ever endure at the hands of terrorists again. It is owed to our nation to stomp out

these terrorists that are so contemptuous of innocent people everywhere at any monitory cost.

What it costs America to rid the word of terrorists, isn't even comparable to the loss of the

millions who fought and died ridding the world of the nazi regime. No responsible leader could

have permitted Saddam Hussein to remain in Baghdad, yet America's anti-war coalitioners

regurgitate more eloquent discourse about President Bush than they ever did about Saddam

Hussein, Osama bin Laden and the Al quaida.

On August 5, 00, Defense Secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld, told military members in a

Town Hall meeting, on Lackland AFB that, 1"The United States did not ask for the war on

terrorism. But it is a war we have to fight and we have to win. There is no safe, easy, middle

ground. Either we take the war to the terrorists and fight them where they are or at some point

we will have to fight them here at home." "In the years since the attacks on the United States,

we have taken down two terrorist regimes. At the same time we've taken out a large majority of

the worlds major terrorist coalitions." (Rumsfeld, 8-5-0, para.15)

Once the news broke that U.S. troops had killed Uday and Qusai Hussein in a fire fight,

anti-war groups were outraged, accusing the Bush Administration of killing someones kids. This

is what passes for constructive criticism in todays anti-war coalition. Do we need to recount the

countless atrocities of Saddams sons? The joy they took in personally torturing Iraqis, and the

murders they ordered. Coincidentally, Bin Laden, and Hitler were somebody's sons too. Guess

what! Those 50,000 troops were not just knocking off two kids. They were trying to free a

nation and protect our freedoms that apparently many Americans take for granted. Sometimes the

ends do justify the means. The deaths of Uday and Qusai Hussein and even the dictators personal

secretary marks dramatic progress in the reconstruction of Iraq. The number of Iraqis coming

forward to report former regime loyalists and weapons have increased dramatically. It signaled

that neither Saddam nor his supporters will be permitted to bring back the reign of terror. This

type of marked success is why anti-war and anti-militarism groups are so frustrated.

In a matter of just a few months of post war, our Armed Forces have made an amazing

difference in this newly liberated land. We have helped deliver millions of tons of food and

medical supplies. For the first time in history, the Iraqi citizens are not having a food or medical

crisis. Most banks are operating, and the Iraqi Central Bank is now paying salaries to police,

schoolteachers, hospital staff, petroleum workers and other key people. U.S. coalitions have

recovered thousands of tons of munitions, including rocket- propelled grenades and surface-to-air

missiles. Many of these weapons were stored in schools, hospitals and mosques. Almost all of

Iraqs hospitals and clinics are treating patients again and our forces are providing security for

many of them . The Iraqi children are now going to schools that are being used for education and

not weapon storage.

Of course, international terrorists are still adapting to counter U.S. tactics. As with the

bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad. Militants from Saudi Arabia, Syria ,Iran and

foreign al-Qaida-type fighters are entering Iraq to attack Western interests. They aim to cause

chaos, making it more challenging for our troops to succeed. All Americans must be patient. No

politician at any time has ever said that this war would be quick or easy. I don't believe our

government is 100% satisfied with how everything has gone down in this war. But the post-war

effort was expected to be long and difficult. This war was not waged upon one country, but rather

all terrorists in many countries. The war against terrorism is broad banded and will be a long

battle. After 11, we could no longer turn our backs on dictators and the terrorists they have

been funding for centuries. We have to take down major terrorist groups and their primary

funders. We must stand united and defeat these enemies.

Anti-militarism groups continue to claim that our leaders are acting with a complete

absence of good faith. They refuse to believe the war in Iraq is part of the overall war on

terrorism. Logically speaking, whatever moral calculus used to inaugurate a war doesn't really

depend on the government's public justification for its actions. It might be appropriate to

"support" the American military actions that are taking place when those actions will inevitably

produce beneficial consequences. Consequences may be more important than motive or intent.

Once again, the ends sometimes do justify the means, and I believe this is one of those times. This

is not one mans war to defeat and control a third world country. Don't fall into the convincing

and anti-American ANSWER coalition. This is the worlds war against terrorism. The kind of

terrorism that invaded our country on 11. United we must stand!

Order your Looking for alibrandi - critical essay paper at affordable prices with custom essay service! "Looking for Alibrandi" was written by Melina Marchetta. The novel confonts many issues facing todays society every day, it is especially focussing on a teenagers view of growing up and what they have to deal with. Josephine Alibrandi is the main character and throughout the novel she confronts many different issues which are very realistic in todays society, this makes her very easy for the reader to relate to and makes Josie seem much more realistic. The reader is able to relate to the kind of relationships Josie has throughout the novel and how she interacts within them. There is also the fact that Josie is from an Italian family therefore their beliefs and customs are different to the people around her. The reader can also learn some insight on how cultures are different yet everyones beliefs must be respected.

There are certain issues throughout the novel that have been deliberately included to show certain aspects of Josies personality which make her more realistic to the reader. When she first meets her father, she shows anger towards him. Which is expected because he never bothered to try and contact her throughout her entire life, which made her not want to know him. But eventually she began to love him and by the end of the novel she changes her last name to his, all to feel more like his daughter and it shows how happy she is to finally have her father in her life. There are also many times when her "teenager' side comes through, her irresponsibility and her curiousity to try new things. There is the time when she is supposed to be looking after the last of the younger students who are doing the annual school walk-a-thon, but her friends want to leave school to go into the city to hopefully see Trey Hancock, a singer in a band they like. Josie gives in and goes with her friends, this points out that she is still growing up and part of that is to make mistakes and deal with the consequences of those mistakes, it lets the teenage readers relate to her more also.

There are some relationships in the novel that have been deliberately constructed to allow further reading into Josies personality and also the other characters personalities. For example, her relationship with her Nonna develops considerably throughout the novel, at the beginning of the novel Josie and her Nonna don't get along a lot and Josie would dread having to go to her house every afternoon after sport, they would always argue and had very different views on everything, she was also very nosey in the way Josies mother Christina was raising Josie and also the fact that Josie was born out of wedlock and had no father figure. But by the end of the novel their relationship is clearly one of love and trust, when Nonna Katia reveals that she cheated on her husband once with a man named Markus Sanford and that was how Christina was created, which means that both Nonna Katia and Christina were finally able to reconcile and Christina understood why her own mother was very ….. about the way Josie was being raised, she wanted better for Josie than she gave to Christina. There is also her relationship with Michael, her father. Her relationship with him is what allows her to get through her last year of school even though there were so many issues that she had to deal with first. He gives her the passion to continue to try hard to become a barrister like she originally wanted. There is also the relationship with John Barton. Josie and John become very close and John began to tell Josie some of his inner most thoughts, I think by constructing their relationship like that throughout the novel allows Josie to deal with his suicide easier and understand it a bit more about why he did it, than anyone else around her did, she knew how he felt & about all the pressure he was under. Whereas everyone else around her thought he was being selfish, and had no reason to be depressed or had nothing to worry about because he came from a good family and was doing well in school.

The preferred reading of Josie's character is that she just a normal teenager going through her last year of school, and dealing with any obstacles that come in her way. A resistant reading could also be taken by the way she complains about how hard her life is, and some readers may be in a worse situation than her therefore not like her character and think she is spoilt and doesn't appreicate what she has. There is also the culture factor, obviously not everyones family is the same as Josies, they have their beliefs which are often brought through in certain situations. Their family is portrayed as a very typical stereotype of an Italian family, the closeness and the noseyness of everyone in the family being in eachothers business, and the struggles they had to go through to get to where they are.

Help with essay on Looking for alibrandi - critical essay

In conclusion, Josie's character has been very carefully constructed the whole way through the novel to appeal and seem realistic to the teen readers of the book, it allows everyone to connect to some part of the novel, either by what she actually went through or just how she dealt with certain situations.

I Can't Dance Anymore

Can you imagine the atmosphere? You walk in a gentleman's club; you hear loud music playing and see people everywhere. Mostly men, almost every man has a woman sitting next to him, smiling. You look over at me and think to yourself, "This girl is lucky, she has the easiest job in the world. She is making good money; in an entertaining environment." What you do not see is how unhappy me and the other women in this club are. Being a dancer stinks. The job is very stressful, it gives you low self-esteem, and just like a drug, it is addictive. That is why I must stop, I cannot dance anymore.

In the past, I have seen several talk shows where young girls dream of becoming a dancer because they think dancing is fun and you make good money. There is not anything fun about dancing. Dancing is very stressful. I am always under pressure by management to sell drinks and club specials. There are always incidents because I am working with competitive females. If I am not willing to perform some type of sex act, I will make less money. It is even worse, for me being a straight female because 75 0% of the female dancers are either gay or bi-sexual.

Buy I Can't Dance Anymore term paper

My job is to make the customers in the club happy. Therefore, I am always pretending that I like someone that I do not know or like. When I am not doing that, I am pretending I am something that I am not just to make money.

After being a dancer for a while I began to develop low self-esteem. I have felt as if I can never look good enough for everyone. Someone is always making comments about my good features and making sure I am aware of my bad ones. I have been on 4-5 diets in the last two years because I am either too slim of too fat. I have not been completely happy with my overall appearance in almost 18 months. Since I am working with a variety of women, I am always compared to someone else, which does not heighten my self-esteem.

In the two years that I have been dancing, I have developed some very bad habits. I went from drinking one to two drinks per shift to drinking three to six drinks per shift. I feel like I am becoming an alcoholic because I work three to four shifts per week. I've also had a very hard time being in relationships with men because it's like my mind is programmed to think the only thing men are good for is their money. I have been in two unhealthy relationships just for the money since I started dancing.

Looking at all these things, one might wonder why I am still dancing. Trying to stop dancing is just as hard as trying to stop smoking, it is addictive. After dancing for a while the money gets addictive and so does the work environment.

I have tried to stop dancing and go back in the workforce twice, but I always end up back in the club.

I would not recommend dancing as a career choice for any woman. The money is good, but it is not worth the chances a woman takes with her health or morality.

That is why I must stop, I cannot dance anymore.

"What Shall Cordelia Speak? Love, and be silent."

"Then poor Cordelia! And yet not so, since I am sure of my loves more ponderous than my tounge."

Cordelia- To King Lear

Shes basically saying that her he knows that her love is way weightier than any words she can say. Her father obviosly doesn't know how deep Cordelia's love is. Because he takes this more as an insult and disrespect.

"Nothing will come of nothing"

"Mend your speech a little, Lest Variant may mar your Fortunes."

Lear to Cordelia

King Lears response to Cordellias failure to express her love for her father in words is symbolic of King Lears madness in the play. His madness is most clearly a manifest in his need for his daughters to show him heir love. In this one scene of Cordellias failure to say that she loves him winds up driving him to madness. He then makes his problem even worse by banishing his daughter. This one scene sets up the rest of the play to drive Lear to further madness and his ultimate death.

Later in the play after Lear has given Cordellia's land to Reagan and Gonerel. He decides that he will live with both of them, it's the least they can do after is generosity. After Goneril gets what's she wants she tells Lear to do away with 50 of his men. This only further drives Lear into insanity.

What 50 of my followers in a clap? Life and death I am ashamed of you!

-Lear to Goneril

This is where the first instance where Goneril starts to show how much she truly "loves" her father.

Sometimes, we have to witness our friends change everything about themselves just to fit the mold of what everyone thinks they should be. I for one, am happy to say that I don't try to fit any mold. I am who I am. I think being true to myself is one of my best qualities.

Having your own opinion takes guts. I always state my beliefs. I do not agree with changing your opinions on a topic just because the rest of the group thinks differently than you do. Many times, people often "adopt" others' beliefs in order to fit in. Most of the time people do not even realize they are doing it. The art of disagreeing is a beautiful thing! I do not understand why there is the need to fit in with everyone else. If everyone in the world were alike, I think it would be extremely boring. I think its great when people have their own opinions on something. I am proud of my thoughts and ideas! I would never try to hide them for the sake of others. Since I like giving my opinion on things, I pretty much "tell it like it is." I tend to speak my mind without really thinking ahead which often gets me into trouble. But, I think in the end, people respect me for that because they know I will always tell the truth. If they need advice on something, they will come to me because they know I will give my honest opinion, not just tell them what they want to hear. At first, they might be a little angry because I gave my honest opinion but in the end they're happy that I didn't lie to them. I believe having your own opinions takes guts, I'm happy I have them.

Conformity is a big issue in high school. If its not the way you dress, it's the music you listen to. People often feel that they have to look/dress/act a certain way before they can fit it. I've managed to avoid that at all costs. Other people purposely go against the "norm" in order to stand out, so to speak. I also disagree with doing this. I choose to listen to the music that sounds good to me, not everyone else. I could care less what everyone around me listens to. I could care less about what the radio says is cool. I feel the same way about the clothes I wear. Everyone should be allowed to have their own style. Now, it seems like you have to dress a certain way in order for everyone to like you, which isn't right. I choose to have my own style and from what I can tell, no one has a problem with it. I do not care what the magazines say, I choose to wear what I want. It does not matter if the item is from a thrift store or the most expensive store in the mall, I'll buy it just as long as I like it. I think that's what sets me apart from most of the kids today. I am not materialistic at all. I don't like going out and getting all of the hottest items just so I can show them off to everyone later. I think some people get so caught up in trying to be what everyone else "is" that they often forget who they really are. I wonder if half the people I hang out with or talk to are actually being themselves or if they're trying to fit into that mold. I think it's sad that you become friends with people but you do not truly know if its really them or not.

Not only am I true to myself, I am also true to my friends. The fact that I try to be myself all the time has an effect of my friendships too. Since I do not discriminate against people who listen to a certain type of music or dress a certain way, I am friends with many different types and groups of people. I am very upfront with all of them. I never talk behind anyone's back because if I had something to say, I would say it to their face rather than talk about it with other people. I also never make fun of people because I find myself relating to most of the people that are getting made fun of. If someone is making fun of someone else for the way they're dressed, I can't comment because I'm most likely not dressed in some expensive clothes from the mall either. The fact that I don't try to be someone else also takes effect on my activities during the weekend too. I'm not much of a partier. Most people really aren't that type either. They just choose to do all the partying because if they did anything else, others might look down upon them. I on the other hand, am not ashamed to say that my typical Saturday night consists of drinking Starbucks and sitting at a bookstore reading until 1100 p.m., then heading to get something to eat, then going home. I'm not the party type and I'm not even going to try to be that type, either. I'd rather just do my own thing than run with the crowd, it's more fun that way.

Custom writing service can write essays on How I am an individual

Being yourself nowadays is a really tough job. With all the peer pressure that you have to deal with in high school, it is often easier to just run with the crowd and become someone you really are not. Other people can have a huge effect on your life if you let them. They can effect your thoughts and feelings. They can even somewhat decide on the way you are going to look and act. Sometimes, other people will have an effect on your hobbies and activities outside of school. The trick is, just to be yourself. It may me tempting to be something you are not because it almost seems as if more people are going to like you that way. But, in most cases, that is not true. People hold respect for people who have individuality.
