Homework Chapter 18. ,,6,,11

. Historically, the three major sources of the public debt have been wars, recessions, and tax-rate cuts. Annual deficits were so large in 180s because the 181 tax cuts, combined with the severe 180-18 recession, generated rapidly rising annual deficits. The deficit rose sharply in 11 and 1 because the Federal government incurred massive expenses in bailing out savings and loan associations that failed during the recession. The large budget surpluses of the late 10s and early 000s are the results of a deficit-reduction package that the Clinton administration and Congress passed. It was a package of higher tax rates and spending limits in place, and with strong economic growth, the annual deficit shrank and the economy continued to expand, so a budget surplus emerged in 18.

. The two main ways the size of the public debt can be measured are GDP and debt. The debt needs only be refinanced rather than refunded. Refinancing the public debt is paying owners of maturing government securities with money obtained by selling new securities or with new securities. Retiring the public debt is reducing the size of the public debt by paying money to owners of maturing U.S government securities. Externally held public debt differs from an internally held public debt in a way that external public debt enables foreigners to buy some of our output. Not like internal public debt that we can own the portion of the debt, the United States transfer goods and services to foreign lenders.

6. Paying off the public debt would increase the income inequality because the overall Federal tax system is only mildly progress. The ownership of the public debt is concentrated among wealthier groups who own a large percentage of all stocks and bonds. Income is transferred from people who have lower incomes to the higher-income bondholders.

. In the day-today conduct of monetary policy, the components of the public debt play

Order your Odyssey paper at affordable prices ! Scholars now generally agree with the theory of the American scholar Milman Parry that the Iliad and Odyssey were composed by oral methods of composition rather than by means of writing. But one must hasten to add that the scale, scope, and the poetic genius of the Iliad and Odyssey raise them far above most other orally composed epics or sagas. And it is possible, as recent scholars have suggested that writing was used at some stage of their composition, though the basic technique was oral. The essential feature of the oral composition of lengthy poems is that the poet constructs his verses largely from ready made verbal formulas (i.e., groups of two or more poetic words) which have been previously constructed by the poet himself or by some predecessor to fit various metrical positions in the line and to describe recurrent situations in the kind of narrative required. Thus a formula like he then in answer addressed the godlike, patient Odysseus can be used whenever the poet wants to introduce a reply by Odysseus. The formula can be ingeniously varied to suit the poets needs. Sometimes these formulaic passages may extend over several lines, as when Homer is describing the launching of a ship or the preparation of a meal.( 10 The Classics Encyclopedia)

The Odyssey describes the long and perilous homeward journey of the Greek hero Odysseus (Oh-DIH-say-uss) from the Trojan War described in the Iliad. The poem opens at a council of the gods on Mount Olympus. After having heard the complaint of Athena, the protectress of Odysseus, Zeus decides that the time has come for Odysseus to return to his wife Penelope, in Ithaca. Athena descends to Ithaca disguised as a human and presents herself as a guest to Telemachus, son of Odysseus, who sits glowering at the noblemen devouring his fathers livestock and wooing his mother. The goddess Athena suggests that he should go on a journey to seek news of his father. Telemachus agrees and leaves Ithaca. The tale next turns to Odysseus adventures. The god Hermes makes Calypso release Odysseus. Odysseus sails away on a raft, but the sea god Poseidon causes a storm and he is shipwrecked on the Island of the Phaeacians where Alcinous (Al-KIN-oo-uss) the Generous and his noble wife Arete reign. The very next morning, Nausicaa (Now-see-KAY-ah), the beautiful daughter of the Phaeacian King, comes with her maidens to the beach, and discovers Odysseus. She has Odysseus fed and clothed, then directs him to her fathers palace. At a feast held in his honor, Odysseus describes his ten years of adventures-filled wandering since the Trojan War, while being entertained by the Phaeacians. After Odysseus finishes his story, the Phaeacians promise to fit out a ship to take him home. Meanwhile, Penelope plans an impossible feat of strength to free her of her suitors. She shows the famous bow of Eurytus, and twelve battle-axes, to them. She promises that she would give her hand to the suitor who could shoot an arrow through all twelve-ax handles. After all suitors fail even to string the bow, Odysseus, clothed as an old beggar, offers to try. He strings the bow with ease and shoots an arrow through twelve ax hafts. Then Odysseus throws aside his disguise. After Odysseus reveals his true identity, Telemachus, spear in his hand, leaps to his side. They fight a brave battle and slay all 108 suitors. The kingdom of Ithaca is regained and Odysseus reunites with his family.

In what ways do Romeo and Juliet stand out as Characters?

In one of the most recognised plays of all time "Romeo and Juliet" would have to have characters that stand out and make the audience feel as if they have known these people for more "the two hours of the stage". This play makes you experience real emotions for the characters by putting them in a situation, which seems so real because it's about love, a thing that most of us have experienced at one time or another.

One thing that strikes oneself when reading the start of the play is how the parents treat their children. Both sets are obviously very rich, so maids or servants care for them leaving bonds between parent and child restricted. This has certain effects on them so when the parents do try and talk its extremely difficult. Romeo's parents distance themselves from him, as they do not completely understand him. This forces them to have his cousin Benvolio, the person closest to Romeo to try and keep track of his whereabouts and feelings

LM "O where is Romeo? Saw you him today?"

B "Madam, an hour before the worshipped sun…"

This is why they let him roam with a fair amount of freedom and hope that his cousin is good enough for him. Romeo though has other plans, and looks towards the friar for comfort and often to solve his problems too.

The Capulet family have a different approach to treating their daughter, even though they do tend to distance themselves they still keep her very controlled and close to them because as their only heir to the family fortune they don't want her to get into unnecessary trouble and would guard her chastity very tightly. Here the father, a very demanding figure wants her to marry Paris only for the reason that he is a rich man and if they wed then their financial status will be secured

"In all respects by me; nay more, I doubt it not.

Wife, go you to her ere you go to bed,

Acquaint her here of my son Paris's love,

And bid her-mark you me-on Wednesday next."

Of course by her fathers actions she acquires rebellious ways but these backfire with disastrous consequences when she speaks of her troubles to her father concerning her wish not to marry Paris

C "And you be mine, I'll give you to my friend;

And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets."

She naturally strays from her father because of his arrogance and steers clear of the mother because of her juvenility, inaccessibility and coldness

LC "(talking about Juliet) This is the matter. Nurse, give leave a while,

We must talk in secret. Nurse, come back again."

So she keeps close to her Nurse. The Nurse being a caring having lost a child herself but sloth like in her duties. Juliet relates to her as her own mother by asking for advice and the nurse obviously feels the same way as she goes and chases up Romeo and interrogates him like any mother would upon finding out Juliet's love for him. She also is prepared to lie and play dangerously for Juliet as she cares for Juliet's feelings very much

Romeo is melancholic which is plain to see when Benvolio is explaining to Romeo's parents about his recent activities

"And gladly shunned who gladly fled from me." He tries to shadow this by being alone much of the time. In a recent Hollywood adaptation of the play Romeo is seen writing some poetry, about mostly his rejected love for Rosaline and this sums up his character well

"And private in his chamber pens himself,

Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out."

Further proof about his melancholic personality trying to be hidden is his use of language in a conversation. Romeo is very sharp and can talk himself out of an uncomfortable situation whenever he feels like it. He has no willingness to make friends either, especially as the friends he knows now are far much less intelligent than him causing him to be fed up with people. He sometimes mocks the other person's intelligence as we can see with Benvolio here

R "Dost thou not laugh?"

B "No, coz, I rather weep."

R "Good heart, at what?"

B "At thy good heart's oppression."

Another good example of his sharpness,

"Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes with nimble soles, I have a soul of lead."

Romeo's personality does change though but only when he is around his love Juliet. His language changes to a positive state and we can see this when he uses hyperbolic sentences

"Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven,

Having some business, do entreat her eyes

To twinkle in their spheres till they return."

There is also evidence that he doesn't think that much of himself but many people think he is testing her intelligence with verbal games and he clearly enjoys it as no one else really understands him like her. Here he says that he is nothing compared to Juliet, her hand is a shrine and Romeo is a pilgrim

"If I profane with my unworthiest hand

This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this,

My lips two blushing pilgrims…"

Destiny and being star-crossed lovers bring these two together. Destiny plays a heavy part in Shakespeare's day (as the theory went that the stars controlled everyone and no one could prevent or change their future.) So idea is featured heavily in the relationship between the two as the stars features many times in the conversations

R "Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven," Shakespeare seems almost obsessed with foreshadowing the tragedy that will eventually engulf these "star-crossed lovers" and involves other people to predict it too

FriL "And thou art wedded to calamity."

A. Opening statement The rainforest is one of the Earth's most valuable natural resources. At the current rate of destruction it could be completely wiped out in the next 40 years.

B. Statement of problem and proposed solution Every single day we are losing 17 plants, animal and insect species due to rainforest deforestation (Rainforest Facts). Landowners and governments of the rainforest today need to be given a good economic reason not to destroy the rainforest. We need to make an economy for the sustainable resources of the rainforest, not the cattle and logging operations.

C. Relevance to audience Most people have no idea just how much the rainforest is affecting our lives. Many of our foods and medicines come directly from the rainforest. Even the oxygen we breathe is a direct function of the rainforest. If we let the rainforest disappear, the results would be devastating.

D. Credibility You should take what I have to say seriously because I have done extensive research on the topic. (See references I'll state them in the speech)

E. Preview of main points/arguments During my speech I am going to let you in on some information that everyone should know about the rainforest. I am going to tell you about the serious danger that the rainforest is in and tell you why it is happening. I am also going to tell you about the only way that we can fix this mess.

II. Transition to main point 1 For the first part of my speech I am going to be stressing some very interesting and important facts to you. It is important to understand how much each and every one of us really does need the rainforest.

III. Main point 1 (Some things everyone should know about the RF) At least 80% of the developed world's diet originated in the RF. (list some of the foods) (Going Nuts). RF's support over half our plants and trees, and half of the world's wildlife. The bio diversity of the tropical RF is so great that 1% of its millions of species have been studied for possible human use. 11 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plants. 5% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from RF ingredients, less than 1% of the trees and plants in the RF have even been tested!!! (Rainforest Facts). The U.S. National Cancer Institute has identified 000 plants that are active against cancer cells. 70% of these plants are found in the RF. 5% of the active ingredients in today's cancer-fighting drugs come from organisms found only in the RF (Rainforest Facts). Two drugs obtained from a RF plant called Madagascar periwinkle, now extinct in the wild due to deforestation, has increased the chances of survival for children with leukemia from 0% to 80% (Rainforest Facts). Experts now believe that if there is a cure for cancer and even AIDS, it will probably be found in the RF (The Last Sorcerer).

IV. Transition to main point Hopefully you can now see that the rainforest is in fact important to us. Unfortunately, it is in serious danger.

V. Main point (The problem Deforestation and Species Extinction) Rainforests once covered 14% of earth's surface, now 6%. 1-½ acres are lost every second. Nearly half of the world's species of plants and animals will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next 5 years due to deforestation. If deforestation continues at current rates, scientists estimate that 80-0% of tropical RF ecosystems will be destroyed by 00. This is driving a species extinction rate unmatched in 65 million yrs (The Biodiversity). The biggest cause of deforestation is timber logging. Land is also being cleared for large-scale cattle ranching, mining operation, government road building and hydroelectric schemes, military operations, and subsistence agriculture of peasants and landless settlers. In some places even for charcoal to power industrial plants (Human Activities). Massive deforestation brings with it air and water pollution, soil erosion, malaria epidemic, release of carbon dioxide, loss of biodiversity. Less RF means less rain, oxygen, and greater threat of global warming.

VI. Transition to main point The rainforests are being destroyed every second. They are being cut down for short-term economic benefit. Once an area is destroyed, it can never again return to the amazing ecosystem that it once was. It takes millions of years to create, and seconds to destroy. People who live in the rainforest have to see the rainforest for more than just its trees. There is more money to be made in the sustainable natural resources that it holds, than its timber.

VII. Main point Money makes the world go around. Land owners, governments and those living in the RF must be given a wonderful reason not to destroy the RF, when it could be saved. Many organizations have demonstrated that if the medicinal plants, fruits, nuts, oils and other resources were harvested sustainable, RF land has much more economic value today and more long term income and profits than if just timber were harvested or if it were burned down for cattle or farming operations(Going Nuts). Latest stats land converted to cattle operations=$60/acre. If timber harvested=$400. Renewable and sustainable resources=$,400/acre (Rainforest Facts). This value is not only for today, but for generations. Local people must be employed to harvest the sustainable resources. People earn 5-10 times more money wild harvesting than they do chopping down the rainforest for subsistence crops. When timber is harvested for little profit and short term gains, all medicinal plants, and nuts, and spices are destroyed (Going Nuts). We have to make a consumer demand and a consumer market for all the sustainable resources. We have to purchase renewable and sustainable RF products and resources, and demand sustainable harvesting of these resources, using local people.

VIII. Transition to conclusion After telling you about what is necessary to save the rainforest, I hope that everyone will seriously consider becoming a part of the demand for sustainable natural resources.

IX. Conclusion

A. Summary of main points I have told you why we should all love and appreciate the rainforest. I have told you the serious danger that the rainforest is facing, and finally told you the solution that can fix it.

B. Statement ending speech There is a way to save the rainforest. It won't be easy, and it won't happen overnight. We have to work together if we want to save this precious natural resource. During the 6-8 minutes of my speech anywhere from 540-70 acres of rainforest has been lost forever.

The Blair-Hitch Project

"When people decided not to confront fascism, they were doing the popular thing, they were doing it for good reasons and they were good people… but they made the wrong decision."

This is Tony Blair suggesting that Saddam Hussein is as much of a threat to world democracy as Adolf Hitler, but how much of a threat is Saddam Hussein to Britain.

It is true that he is a cruel dictator who has a blatant disregard for human rights, but it is unlikely he has yearnings for universal conquest and world domination as Adolf Hitler proved he did.

Cheap Custom Essays on The Blair Hitch Project

It has not been categorically proven that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction; Iraq however does possess weapons which could be deemed "unpleasant', weapons which ironically were "acquired' from Britain and America. The USA sold Iraq anthrax, West Nile Virus and Botuliniol Toxin in the 180s. United Nations weapons inspectors have revealed certain weapons but so far, even these reports are not conclusively damning. Since the last gulf war in 11 Saddam Hussein's "progress' as a world dictator has been forcefully controlled by international force.

On Friday 8th February 00 Hans Blix, the UN's chief weapons inspector stated that Iraq had promised to destroy their illegal Samoud II missiles which he optimistically declared to be "a very significant piece of real disarmament." Even to the most cynical observer, this reveals a certain degree of uncharacteristic co-operation on Saddam's part in a probable effort to avoid war. However amongst these cynics Mr George W Bush and Mr Tony Blair refuse to be accounted for.

Tony Blair, the prime minister of the democratic United Kingdom continues to ignore these gestures. Accused of being America's Poodle, Tony Blair attacked this argument by saying

"I believe in it (the war). I am truly committed to dealing with this, irrespective of the position of America, if the Americans were not doing this, I would be pressing for them to do so."

For all of Saddam Hussein's in-humanitarian ways towards sectors of his own people, the argument that this is a human rights issue falls historically flat. Britain has refused to intervene against the atrocities committed by the dictatorship in Zimbabwe led by Robert Mugabe and ignores the fact that North Korea is building nuclear missiles, so why is Iraq different?

At least 0% of British people said they would not support a war under any circumstances. There is a fear that it will lead to the deaths of countless thousands of innocent people in Iraq or even a full blown nuclear war, a situation far worse then the atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein. There is also the worry that a pre- emptive attack on Iraq would be seen by the Islamic world as a direct attack on Islam which could seem to justify further terrorist attacks against the West.

Many people believe that war should be only a last resort.

Certain members of the United Nations including France and Germany do not agree to the war; if the UN were more uniformly decided about the war being a last resort it may have more support from the British public. However, both Bush and Blair are under the impression that Saddam is linked with al-Qaeda, the terrorist organisation who undertook the attacks on the Pentagon in Washington and the World Trade Centre towers in New York on September 11 00. Understandably, Blair is worried that our own /11 may come, however Saddam Hussein was not directly linked with these acts of terrorism, and al-Qaeda appears to operate in a number of countries and would undoubtedly still exist. Unfortunately Tony Blair's supporting argument for war has changed from day to day. Originally it was Iraq's links with terrorism. Then it was Saddam's possession of "weapons of mass destruction'. Finally, only a fortnight ago, the Prime Minister was going to war to liberate the downtrodden people of Iraq. It would seem that the British Prime Minister is resolute in his decision to fight but unfortunately his motives lack this discipline. There are also many who believe that the horrors of the regime in Iraq were insufficient justification for an aggressive war, whose aim, if these considerations were the main objective would be a change of regime. As well as this, America is believed to have other motives which are, shall we say "questionable'.

The Prime Minister suggests he wants a quick end to the conflict

"If you act early, you have to do less, fewer people get hurt and you reduce the possibility that it spreads."

However, going to war to replace Saddam will not guarantee that he is replaced with someone better. In deed this has lead to claims of imperialism by opponents of the American plan with their intention of destabilising Iraq, replacing Saddam with some American Puppet. Tony Blair defended the United States by saying,

"The US will not stay in Iraq a day longer than they have to. The idea that this is some kind of American imperialism is completely absurd."

Although Downing Street's main hope is that the US-British threat could force president Saddam to disarm without a shot being fired, Blair is still pushing for the war.

On Wednesday the 6th of February, one hundred and twenty one MP's rebelled against Blair's policies on the war, this was the largest revolt against a prime minister in over one hundred years, you would think that this and the thirty percent of the British public completely against any war, would ring alarm bells. Perhaps it is time for Tony Blair to step back from the brink and follow such nations as China, France, Germany, Russia and Syria in thinking that inspection time should be extended and the weapons inspectors' and surveillance equipment added to before responding to the call to arms.
