The Clod and The Pebble

William Blake is somewhat confusing to me. I have read this poem over and over until I could somewhat figure it out. He was raised in the mid seventeen hundreds and the early eighteen hundreds. He studied engraving, Gothic art and printing.

The meaning that I got out of this poem was that love could be cold-hearted and selfish and it could also be warm and innocence. In this poem Blake used The Clod and The Pebble to be the symbols of love. The Clod is representing the good and The Pebble is representing something like a stone. When it says "Love seeketh not Itself to please, Nor for itself hath care; But for another gives its ease, And builds a Heaven in Hell's despair", I think Blake was showing that love can be unselfish. There is enough love for everyone not just for certain things or people. The love for others is passionate and is happy. When he says "Heaven in Hell's despair", I think he is saying that it's not afraid of the evil, as long as you are positive and truly trust worthy, you can over power the bad with the good. When he states "Trodden with the cattle's feet" I think he is saying that The Clod is being stepped on, or being taken advantage of and sometimes being stumbled over. "But a Pebble in the brook Warbled out these metres meet", I think he was saying that someday the good and the bad will meet. The Pebbled in this poem is portrayed to be hard as a rock and selfish. "Love seekth only Self to please" I think he meant that love was being selfish that's why I think Blake capitalized Self. It wants everything to revolve around The Pebble only. When he speaks on to bind another to its delights it means that The Pebble is trying to hold love for itself instead of letting it be shared with everyone. "Joys in another's loss of ease", its saying that The Pebble enjoys to see others hurt. It doesn't really know how to be sensitive to others feelings. At the end when he says "builds a Hell in Heavens Despite", The Pebble is saying that love will take away all of the positive images despite whatever The Clod is expressing.

I think Blake wrote this poem to illustrate the good and the bad of love. Although they are different is some ways, they are also alike in others ways. You have to give some and take some. The poem shows that even with some being selfish and some being unselfish, there is still a commonplace, heaven or hell.

If you order your essay from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Treatments of Bulimia nervosa. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Treatments of Bulimia nervosa, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Treatments of Bulimia nervosa paper at affordable prices ! Bulimics have fears and concerns of treatment and help. There are many ways to help a bulimic through many different therapies. There is cognitive behavioral, individual, family, and group therapy. Psychopharmacologic therapy, self-help groups, hospitalization and nutritional counseling are also helpful. Immediate treatment is the best way, but many don't seek treatment until their thirties or forties. Fifty percent of patients fully recover; however, thirty percent have a relapse up to six years later. (Bulimia pg ). With treatment, bulimia can be successfully overcome.

Nutritional counseling is one way of treating bulimia nervosa. With nutritional counseling, normalizing the eating habits is the goal. A registered counselor works out a meal plan and gives nutritional information. Self-help groups are very similar to support groups. They provide support and encouragement to maintain therapeutic change (Sherman 8). These methods are not used as much as other methods.

Psychopharmacologic therapy uses drugs with different therapies. If drugs are used by themselves, it only eliminates fifteen percent of bingeing habits. Most of the drugs are anti-depressants because most bulimics binge and purge on account of being depressed. Prozac is approved to treat bulimia. It has been found to have a sixty-seven percent reduction in binge eating and a fifty-six percent reduction in vomiting. Prozac is administered for bulimics who have the problem for more than six months and who purge more than three times a week. The other two drugs used are Imipramine and Despiramine. People who are schizophrenic or paranoid may get worse with these drugs. Despiramine is an addictive drug and patients may suffer withdrawal symptoms after they are done using this drug (Bulimia pg ).

Individual therapy treats the patient to their specific needs and therapists use a specialized approach. The therapist works in effort to determine how the eating difficulties develop. They also figure out how to effectively change and begin the change process. The therapist may also use nutritional counseling (Sherman 84). Only thirty percent of patients that go through individual therapy fully recover without any other type of therapy (Bulimia pg 4).

Family therapy is used often to modify maladaptive family interactions through cooperation of the family. This type of therapy involves the family members that play a role in the bulimic person's difficulties. The focus of family therapy is less on the individual and more on the family as a unit. The therapist tries to figure out the families' role in the individual and direct change. When successful, the need to binge and purge should diminish (Sherman 86).

One of the most effective therapies is group therapy. There are five causes that are beneficial from group therapy. First, it allows the bulimic individual to know that he or she is not alone. Second, there is a group of therapists to understand how they feel. Third, it is a safe environment to learn new skills to give up the eating habits. Finally, it provides each member with the opportunity to make significant attachments within the group and therapeutic separations at the end of the treatment (Sherman 86).

Cognitive behavioral therapy is very useful in helping in helping individuals with bulimia overcome long-standing abnormal eating behaviors. Fifty percent of its patients fully recover. Of the fifty percent that do not recover, some may show partial improvement through another type of therapy (Bulimia pg 4). This therapy has been proven to significantly decrease the frequency of binge eating and purging in the majority of its patients. Cognitive behavioral therapy combines many other therapies into one treatment process. It focuses on restructuring conditions related to eating behavior, body shape and weight. The goal is to interrupt the binge eating while reconstructing attitudes, beliefs, and values that have maintained this eating disorder. The therapist helps identify irrational thoughts the clients have that contribute to their disorder. They also want to restore control over dietary intake and improve cognitive methods for controlling feeling. The therapy includes self-monitoring of the frequency, amount, situations, thoughts and emotion associated with bingeing, daily intake journals and prevention by discussing the risks of vomiting, laxative abuse, and health damage (Bulimia pg 5). An estimated 1 in 100 American women binges and purges, so therapists can use assertiveness, communication and problem solving strategies, as well as relaxation and positive body imagery training as needed.

In extreme cases, hospitalization is a type of treatment. General estimates suggest that as many as ten to fifteen percent of eating disorders are fatal for those affected. This is usually only necessary if the bulimia has gotten out of control and the person performs self-induced vomiting several times a day, is vomiting blood, is suicidal because of their eating disorder, or is suffering from dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance. Under hospitalization, therapy is intensive and practical, and is aimed at developing increased control over normal eating, weight and body image. This therapy also addresses psychological issues that could lead to relapse. At the hospital, the services offered are daily treatment planning, interpersonal psychotherapy groups, meal planning and preparation groups, nutrition groups, body image and self esteem groups, communication groups and exercise, stress and relaxation training. Meals are monitored by a nursing staff to help patients break habits related to eating disorder, including binge eating and vomiting or food refusal. Often, patients attend hospitals to have special dental care on their damaged teeth caused by purging and to minimize dental problems in the future (Hopkins 1). Hospitalization should be a bulimics last resort.

In conclusion, bulimics have many types of therapies to choose from. Although some are better than others, every bulimics is different. Any therapy can work; it just depends on the person. Although only fifty percent fully recover, hopefully in the next few years that percentage will rise.

In the eighteenth century, many paintings were done by famous painters, and some were often done with the medium of oil on canvas, such as ¡§Palo Atto Spring¡¨ and ¡§A Burial at Ornans¡¨. ¡§Palo Atto Spring¡¨ was painted by Thomas E. Hill in 1878, and ¡§A Burial at Ornans¡¨ was painted by Gustave Courbet in 184.

The ¡§Palo Atto Spring¡¨ painting is a painting of the Stanford Family, relative, and friends at the Palo Alto Stock Farm, the future site of the university. This piece is now at the Stanford museum hung for display, and this is a seven by eleven and half foot painting that is display with six spot lights from different angles. Two aimed at the top center, two at the top two corners and reflected on the two sides of the golden frame, and lastly, two shines at the main center and reflected on the bottom side of the frame. The three sides of the golden frame serve the purpose of showing the painting is highly valuable by others. When look closely of the painting, the brush stokes shows that certain parts are considered thick painting, while other parts are thin painting. Also the perspective point is clearly showed, along with the distance of depth. Because the lightest part is the farthest image of the painting, the house-like figure. Within the painting, we can see the lights shown through the forest and shone upon the people, which gave the feeling of warmth summer. Through the blurriness, we can see what is farther away from us, and those people that are not as important as others. Though many people are gathered at this yard to spend time together, many of them seem out of attention, dazzled, or just simply minding their own business. For example the three children at the right playing lawn croquet, the one in suit kneeling down with one knee, he seems out of the game, and there is something that catches his eyes from the direction of the audience, us. The boy is not the only one that has that out of attention look on his face, if we look at this painting closely, we can realize the people are broken into groups, and the groups are all looking into different directions, and seems dazzled.

The people from the painting were all dressed in the traditional style, and can be noticeable acknowledge the healthiness in their family. Within the painting, some of the well-dressed girls and boys were playing lawn croquet, while another girl was on a tree swing. Thomas E. Hill had used the technique of having one of the lawn croquet playing hole right at the edge of the lower center of painting. So when viewers are stood in front of the painting, like I did when I went to the museum, the painting seems not that far away, it can easily be reached and steps into.

In some ways ¡§Palo Atto Spring¡¨ and ¡§A Burial at Ornans¡¨ are similar, because the people from ¡§A Burial at Ornans¡¨ seems like they are gathered for a funeral, but they are also broken up into groups, some minding their own business or dazzled. Though ¡§A Burial at Ornans¡¨ also has children in the painting, but obviously the two is not into what the purpose of being there was. The boy closer to us, he is dazzled, and just ready to go home, and the one in the back is talking to one of the adult. The children from ¡§Palo Atto Spring¡¨ was the same, they were seemed as if they just want time to past faster, so they don't have to sit there and do nothing. Gustave Courbet also used the technique of having only half of the hole shown at the edge of the painting. So, we as the viewers seem as if we are stood right in the setting. With this technique, many viewers would think that there is no way that they could stood in front of the painting without the feeling of drawn into the painting itself. Both of these paintings are painted with techniques, and well thought of expressions of the different characters within the paintings; therefore, both paintings are respected by the society today.

Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

People today are so worried about the way they look and act that their true character is masked behind some fictional person. Even today I am occasionally guilty of trying to be someone that I am not. I learned from a close friend and mentor that being yourself is much more important than always trying to impress. In the end, it will be much easier to make decisions based on the right morals, and not what others lead you to think.

My brother was not always the most talkative and popular kid, but for some reason he never seemed to be affected by it. He would always dress different and listen to unusual music even though his friends would constantly joke on him. I began to notice these changes while he was in high school, and he never thought twice about changing. Every weekend he would spike up his hair and wear tacky clothes, just to be different. At first it seemed he was doing it for attention, but as years passed he never changed his ways.

Soon enough I admired my brother for this. I would be amazed of his self confidence and how he continued to stand out in any group. He even started getting more friends. They were finally realizing that he was not all that different and was actually the same as them. It proves that staying true to yourself will pay off in the end. Today, my brother still dresses and acts the same. He is a freshman in college, so I will rarely get to see him. Although he is not around me any more, I still try to live by his same morals and apply them to my life.

Write my Essay on Influence in my Life for me

His actions taught me not to worry about what others will think, and to stay true to my own feelings. Once I have accomplished this, I am easily able to make the right judgments that I am faced with every day. This quality makes leadership opportunities come about often in my life. The right judgment always brings about success in my life, and makes every day challenges easy to take on.

My decisions in life are now much easier thanks to the guiding actions of my brother. There was never really a time when my brother told me to be like him, it was just his actions that attracted me to his lifestyle. There is no easier way to live life than to believe in yourself. Having self confidence allows me to achieve any goal I set in my life and feel good about myself while I am doing it.

The terms IP Telephony, Internet Telephony, voice-over-IP, and fax-over-IP are all related and are often used as synonyms.

To be more precise, IP telephony is the collection of technologies that emulates and extends todays circuit-switched telecommunications services to operate on packet-switched data networks based on the Internet Protocol (IP). Defined in this way, IP telephony encompasses the other terms and extends those capabilities even further to include new telecommunications applications made possible by the convergence of voice and data.

Todays Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) provides its users with dedicated, end-to-end circuit connections for the duration of each call. Based on the calling and called parties numbers, circuits are reserved among the originating switch, any tandem switches along the route between the two ends of the call, and the terminating switch. Signaling between these PSTN switches supports basic call setup, call management, and call tear down as well as querying of databases to support advanced services such as local number portability, mobile subscriber authentication and roaming, virtual private networking, and toll-free service.

Custom writing service can write essays on internet telephony

The PSTN has served voice traffic well over the last 100 years, but its success has been paralleled by the rise of separate networks to support data traffic. Clearly, use of distinct networks for voice and data represents an additional burden to service providers and an additional cost to consumers. As more and more PSTN traffic becomes data-oriented, however, the trend toward voice and data network convergence becomes stronger and stronger. Service providers, Internet service providers, and manufacturers of switching, transmission, and customer premises equipment are all participating in a significant shift of the telecommunications industry toward combined voice/data networking using IP.

The public Internet, of course, is the best known example of an IP network. In IP networks, information is digitized and transmitted as a stream of packets over a digital data network. IP networks allow each packet to independently find the most efficient path to the intended destination, thereby best using the network resources at any given instant. The packets associated with a single source may thus take many different paths to the destination in traversing the network, arriving with different end-to-end delays, arriving out of sequence, or possibly not arriving at all. At the destination, however, the packets are re-assembled and converted back into the original signal. Cost efficiencies arise because of the superior utilization of the network as it shares traffic among many, many sources.

The data carried by an IP network can be as simple as transactional queries and responses or as complex as broadband multimedia services. In particular, the technology of IP telephony supports all the functions of voice communications, fax communications, routing, authorization, authentication, accounting, billing, and network management that are now provided by the PSTN. Todays voice-over-IP and fax-over-IP technology can reconstruct the signals to compensate for echoes, jitter, and dropped packets, with

exceptional performance possible if the IP network is a managed network with guaranteed Quality of Service. Vendors and service providers alike are striving to develop new standards that will enable connection-oriented services like IP telephony to retain high priority when carried over a connectionless IP network.

The shift to IP telephony promises better efficiencies in the transport of voice and data, and, as a result, lower telecommunications costs to end users. Moreover, as IP telephony evolves, it will be able to match all the features of voice communications currently supported by the PSTN. Interoperability among the IP telephony products of different vendors is the first major hurdle to overcome. The real promise of IP telephony, however, will be realized with the next wave of advanced services that will begin to surpass the capabilities of the PSTN. Such future services include

• Multimedia conferencing -- allowing multiple users to communicate by voice and video

• Multicasting -- disseminating voice, video, and/or data to a large targeted group

• Collaborative workgroup applications -- facilitating multiple users to interact verbally and visually while sharing access to common data and applications

• Call center applications - using IP telephony to enhance todays Web-based ecommerce through interaction with live service representatives

• Unified messaging - consolidating email, pager, voicemail, and fax services into a single IP-based service

• IP call waiting - expanding the number and type of simultaneous incoming calls beyond the two voice calls that the PSTN currently supports

IP telephony and the future ubiquity of IP-based networks will result in successive waves of innovation in technology, in devices, and in applications. With a focus on the customer premises side, InnoMedia is helping to advance that future.

WHAT IS VoIP?

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology enables the real-time transmission of voice signals as packetized data over IP networks that employ the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and Internet Protocol

(IP) suite.

In VoIP systems, analog voice signals are digitized and transmitted as a stream of packets over a digital data network. At the destination, however, the packets are re-assembled and converted back into the original voice signal. VoIP technology insures proper reconstruction of the voice signals, compensating for echoes made audible due to the end-to-end delay, for jitter, and for dropped packets.

While standards for VoIP technology are emerging, they are still in flux. Even VoIP implementations that are standards-compliant may not necessarily interoperate with the standards-compliant products of other vendors. The ITU-T H. standard, for example, does not encompass all aspects of VoIP communications, and each vendor of VoIP technology can have their own variations of the overall VoIP network architecture and algorithms. Variations among VoIP products include the algorithms and implementations used to support dynamic bandwidth allocation, packet loss recovery, adaptive echo cancellation, and speech processing to deliver voice quality as high as possible.

VoIP Gateways

VoIP technology allows voice calls originated and terminated at standard telephones supported by the PSTN to be conveyed over IP networks. VoIP gateways provide the bridge between the local PSTN and the IP network for both the originating and terminating sides of a call. To originate a call, the calling party will access the nearest gateway either by a direct connection or by placing a call over the local PSTN and entering the desired destination phone number.

The VoIP technology translates the destination telephone number into the data network address (IP address) associated with a corresponding terminating gateway nearest to the destination number. Using the appropriate protocol and packet transmission over the IP network, the terminating gateway will then initiate a call to the destination phone number over the local PSTN to completely establish end-to-end two-way communications. Despite the additional connections required, the overall call set-up time is not significantly longer than with a call fully supported by the PSTN.

The gateways must employ a common protocol -- for example, the H. or MGCP or a proprietary protocol -- to support standard telephony signaling. The gateways emulate the functions of the PSTN in responding to the telephones on-hook or off-hook state, receiving or generating DTMF digits and receiving or generating call progress tones. Recognized signals are interpreted and mapped to the appropriate message for relay to the communicating gateway in order to support call set-up, maintenance, billing, and call tear-down.

VoIP Gatekeepers

The translation of a destination telephone number into the IP address of the correct terminating gateway is a primary VoIP gatekeeper function. The routing table maintained by the gatekeeper resolves which gateway corresponds to the destination telephone number in order to complete a call.

Gatekeeper functionality can be distributed among all the gateways of the VoIP network or can be centralized at one or several locations. When gatekeeper functions are embedded in each gateway, all gateways of the overall VoIP network act autonomously to coordinate their actions. With a centralized gatekeeper, all gateways of the network coordinate their actions with respect to the centralized gatekeeper rather than acting independently.

VoIP Networks

Support of VoIP calls thus generally requires at least two VoIP gateways. Typically, a VoIP service provider would establish gateways (or relationships with other service providers and access to their gateways) in all countries or regions for which calls are to be originated and terminated. The resulting

VoIP network is composed of the gateways, the local PSTN access to each gateway, and the IP network that links the gateways.

(A Representative VoIP Network)

Access to the local VoIP gateway for originating calls can be supported in a variety of ways. For example, the PBX of a business can be configured so that all international direct dialed calls are transparently routed to the nearest gateway. In this way, high-tariff calls are automatically supported by VoIP to obtain the lowest cost. Alternatively, the calling party may be required to dial a local or toll-free number to access the nearest gateway and then enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and the desired destination phone number. This approach is particularly well suited for VoIP service providers marketing their service with prepaid calling cards.

The IP network used to support IP telephony can be a proprietary network, a network of leased facilities, or even the Internet. The Internet is clearly the most inexpensive underlying IP network, but, because it lacks any central administrative or controlling entity, it can be subject to congestion, uncontrollable packet delays, and temporary outages. More reliable communications, albeit at higher cost, can be realized with dedicated networks, either proprietary or leased. With guaranteed bandwidth availability and manageable Quality of Service, a dedicated network provides a more stable and high-performance medium than the Internet. A proprietary network can be simply established using leased lines and owner-operated networking equipment. Alternatively, bandwidth on frame relay or asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) facilities can be affordably obtained from such international carriers as WorldCom/MCI, AT&T, Cable & Wireless, Sprint, and others.

Finally, calls must be terminated at a corresponding VoIP gateway and completed to the destination phone number via the PSTN or, in the case of a call internal to a companys virtual private network, its dedicated lines. Depending on the location of the gateway and the destination phone number, long distance charges may apply. Typically, the terminating gateway will be in the same country as the destination phone number or in a country with competitive tariffs so that favorable long distance rates can be obtained. Implementation of least-cost routing algorithms insures that a given phone call is terminated at the gateway that realizes the lowest total end-to-end tariff.

VoIP Cost Structure

Long distance and especially international voice communications can be significantly less expensive when supported by an IP network rather than by the PSTN. Calls supported by VoIP technology are not subject to the same cost structure of access charges, transmission costs, and settlement charges.

Access charges are imposed by the local telephone company to allow long-distance carriers to originate or terminate the local portion of each telephone call. In the United States, however, the Federal Communications Commission has ruled that such access charges are not applicable to VoIP calls. Transmission costs associated with the actual long distance transmission are typically much less thanks to the reduced bandwidth required by the data packets associated with the call. And, finally, the settlement charges associated with international calls are not present when international transmission is carried by an IP network. A call supported by the PSTN involves the establishment and cost of an end-to-end circuit that is maintained for the duration of the call. A call supported by VoIP technology, by contrast, involves the transmission of many individual packets over an IP network. The cost of a VoIP call thus depends in part on the number and size of the packets that must be transmitted; i.e., the bandwidth required. Use of speech compression algorithms can reduce the required bandwidth by a factor of 8 or more. Further bandwidth reductions can be obtained by recognizing and not explicitly transmitting the silences that naturally occur in human speech. These reductions in bandwidth directly translate to a reduction in cost.

The total cost per VoIP call is thus due to the costs associated with access to the gateways at both ends and the cost of transmission over the IP network. If originating calls access the VoIP gateway through the PSTN, access costs at the originating end may include the costs of local or long distance connections or the monthly cost of a toll-free access number. Access costs at the terminating end may include the costs of the local or long distance connections associated with terminating a call from the nearest gateway to the destination number.

The cost of transmission over the IP network depends on what IP network is employed. If the Internet is employed as the underlying IP network, then the only cost is the cost of Internet access at each gateway. Costs are higher if a proprietary or leased IP network is employed, but, in return, the network can provide enhanced reliability and assured Quality of Service.

Conclusion

Voice-over-IP technology allows the integration of voice and data communications, reducing costs and revealing new opportunities for both telecommunications service providers and corporate users. InnoMedia, as a leader in VoIP technology and IP telephony, is proud to offer a wide range of products and solutions to help its customers and users benefit from this new technology.

This is a remarkable story it is about a young women named "Ruth", who betrays her royalty and commitment in her lifetime. Her name means "friendship" in English, which I can quite say she was a friendly person, who was always willing to help someone in need. She was always looking out for others, before herself, she was not a selfish person, but caring. Ruth was not only a widow but she was the ancestor of David and Jesus Christ. I felt sentimental for her, because she was a widow, who lost her husband, and had to get remarried.

As the story progresses, Naomi comes in who is Ruth and Orpah's mother in law she tells them to go back to their mothers home, to seek the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord was giving food to the people back home, because of the famine that had commenced. I really felt good about this, how Naomi showed so much devotion for her daughter in laws even though her two sons were dead, she showed so much sympathy for them. "May the Lord show kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me". These were the kind words of Naomi, she was implying even though her two sons were dead, Ruth and Orpah were two admirable, and strong people. They were willing to stick with her and help her get through her toughest time in her life. I could tell that she was a friendly, loving, and caring person, at this point of the story. She was not a selfish, uncaring person, but a loving, caring and devoted mother in law.

Not only did I like Naomi but I also admired Ruth. Ruth was a caring person as well, when Naomi said "Return home my daughters". Ruth did not intend to go, she intended to stay with Naomi. She said "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you, where you go I will go." After reading that I could tell both Naomi and Ruth were two inseparable people. It felt good to know they would do anything for each other as long as they would be together through thick and thin.

The story of Esther, is about a courageous young Jewish woman, who grows up as an orphan, and is raised by her uncle. I was aroused to find out that an orphan, who grew up without a family, and money came to be the Queen of Persia. She even saved the the entire nation from the genocide in Persia. This book states that God had not abandoned his people, even though they were in the exile. I learned a lot about Christianity and I hope you liked the stories because I sure did.

Most people are familiar with the Nike logo. Most people also know that Nike is a multi-million dollar company that sells name brand shoes worldwide. Millions of pairs of Nike shoes are sold daily, but what people don't know about Nike shoes is how and where they are made, who makes them, and how Nike spends its money in this process.

According to the "Sweatshop Fact Sheet," Tiger Woods is paid over fifty five thousand dollars a day to be their spokesman. Another famous person that is a spokesman for Nike is Michael Jordan. According to the article "Running Away With the Profits," (Environmental Action, Academic Search Elite), Michael Jordan is paid twenty million dollars in endorsement fees. Big name sport teams advertise Nike to appeal to the common person.

Custom essays on Nike and Sweat shops

Indonesia is one of many countries around the world that is home to numerous Nike factories. Indonesia is a third world country of 14 million people. The main part of the economy is farmers, with half of these being the labor force. This happens to be an ideal country of choice for Nike to set up their factories for manufacturing their shoes. It allows Nike to take advantage of the local people. These people need to work in these factories to make a living, and they are stuck with the poor working conditions that Nike has provided.

One way in which Nike is taking advantage of their workers is through long and hard work hours. According to the article "We are not machines," the Nike's code of conduct states that the employees in their factories can only work sixty hours a week, and it's mandatory to have one day off per seven days worked. The task force in the article went in and interviewed the workers at the Nike factory in early 001 and found that workers' weeks consisted of seventy hours and more. This depended on the seasonal orders that the workers were obligated to fill. The top worker was working 84 hours a week. When asked if this worker wanted to work this amount of hours, his reply was no. Another worker stated, "Although overtime is voluntary in my factory, it is forced by nature, since we cannot survive without it." ("We are not machines" article) He has to work this amount of hours or he can't afford anything for his family.

Another thing that you might not know about Nike workers is the low pay they receive. The same report, "We are not machines," also found that the average monthly range of pay was from $7 to $44. This averages out to 5 cents per hour. They are stuck working the long hours that Nike demands, or they loose their jobs. Nike says that they are meeting minimum wage standard, which is $.8 per day, but the workers are working many more hours than required to earn this wage. They are not paying them for their overtime. It takes the average worker one hour of wages to be able to buy 1 kilogram of rice. The average farmer makes about a dollar a day, where the average factory worker makes about two dollars a day. Sure this is more money, but there is a catch . The catch is that the factory worker puts in double plus hours each day, in poor working conditions, with no rights. They aren't learning any basic skills for survival in their country, such as farming. Their children aren't learning any basic skills either, because they send them away to live in another village with a relative. They basically can't afford to provide day care while they work, nor the food to feed their children or themselves. The shoes that these workers are making cost Nike about five dollars per shoe, and on an average, they sell for one hundred dollars or more depending on the shoe.

The Nike workers also have to go through the workday in unhealthy work conditions. The process of making shoes involves many chemicals, and if these chemicals aren't properly managed, the worker's health is at risk. Dara O'Rourke, a trained health and safety specialist, was allowed in to inspect the Nike factories in Indonesia. He found excessive noise and heat. Levels of toxic chemicals were still present, but reduced. He found misuse of equipment and poor tracking of worker illness. Because of this investigation, Nike went ahead and introduced water based chemicals, which reduced the level of toxic chemicals. When they interviewed some more workers after this, they found that they still had health issues that were unresolved.

Another issue that these workers face is not having the right to form unions. According to the article, "We are not machines," the workers not only fear for their jobs, but also for their lives, if they even talk about unions. There have been many cases in which workers have been threatened and fired. There was even a case where there was a murder attempt on a worker's life related to the union. I think it's pathetic that Nike, which is an American founded company, will not support union activities in their own factories.

Many people would ask the question why is Nike hardly concerned about the welfare of its workers? This can be easily answered by looking at the global economy. The global economy consisted of many companies using third world countries as their base for their factories that make their products. All these companies are backed by the WTO. According to the article "Ten Arguments against the WTO," the WTO is not concerned with where a company manufactures its products or the conditions that it takes place in. The reason that Nike gets away with having factories as such in Indonesia, is that they are backed by the a very powerful world organization, the WTO, thus allowing Nike to make huge profits. Now I am not saying that Nike is free to do what they want. They have been pressured by many independent organizations, which fight for the rights of the factory workers, and the types of conditions described in this article. Because of this, Nike has made some changes throughout the years that benefit the workers, but it is still not enough.

In conclusion, it seems that Nike is making a huge profit at the cost of human live and dignity. Instead of spending millions of dollars on their workers, who are the backbones of making the actual shoes, they are spending it on their advertisements to promote their company. I realize that advertisement is essential to the success of a product, but it should not be at the cost of another human being to make a profit. I know that Nike is just one of thousands of companies that have taken their labor overseas, so that the product can be made at a fraction of its cost. Unfortunately the public sees Nike as a company whose product is worn by the rich and famous, therefore it is something that they would want for themselves. We the consumer enable them to continue this kind of business, because we buy the product. Through global media, we the public are becoming more aware of this kind of exploitation of workers. Overall, I think there is no pride to be found in companies that exploit their employees at the cost of a better profit for themselves. Awareness is going to be the key to hopefully fix it in the near future.
