Blackberrying by Sylvia Plath

Within the poem Blackberrying by Sylvia Plath, she positions herself as the lonely walker and speaker, self-consciously communicating with and reacting to nature yet all the while assuming that at her worst this may cause her immediate surroundings to justifiably consume her (by the overwhelming sea ) and that at best her surroundings are malciously indifferent. The theme of Blackberrying, on the surface at least , is of place. Aside from this theme of place and some regularity of structure there are other panoramic factors in this poem. Most striking is the underlying sense of threat and the images of willing death which are anticipated. Plath uses imagery, metaphor, simile and other many elements of poetry in this poem. The imagery is used mostly in the poem to stimulate our senses and recall our imaginations and experiences.

The progress of the walk in Blackberrying does not describe the journeys outset, yet there is a defined middle and end. There is a definitive purpose namely to relish in and gather blackberries. The three nine-line stanzas within the work fulfil three detached purposes-the first to describe the berries and the luscious sensations experienced in their harvest; the second to define the environment and to point to failings which can exist when the berries become overdeveloped; the third to terminate the journey and switch the mood from one of fascination and wonder to stark negative reality. Blackberrying as a term exists in Medieval English. It means going toward death and has the additional negative connotation of death without salvation (hell).

The poem opens with a scenario dominated by blackberries so that we gain an impression of delicious blackness everywhere-nothing , nothing but blackberries. (Line 1) The concept of the twisting lane is created by Plath using an image of hooks-bends which the solitary berry-harvester, the poet, cannot see past. We are told the sea is somewhere at the end of it (Line 4)and we are exposed to the first nuances of limbo and hopelessness when we learn that it is heaving (Line 4)-an apparently strange word to choose to describe the unseen conjured up sea on a windy but sunny September day. Perhaps, even at this early stage of the poem the poet finds the thought of the sea which will greet her at the end of the lane as threatening. Yet it is the berries that demand the poets and our attention as they are described with highly illustrative similes- Big as the ball of my thumb , and dumb as eyes/Ebon in the hedges, fat/ With blue-red juices. (Lines 5-7) The blackberries are not hostile or indifferent. An interesting metaphor in Blackberrying is in the line, These they squander on my fingers. I had not asked for such a blood sister hood. (Lines 7-8) It is as if the juice from the blackberries is their blood, almost as if they are sacrificing it. It then goes on to describe her as she imagines them inviting her into their sorority. She has pricked her fingers on the thorns of blackberries- when her blood mixes with the juices of the blackberries it is as if she has been blood bonded into their sorority, yet she has not asked for this.

The wind features prominently and is represented as a vigorous force which, while not uniformly hostile , is dominant, uncontrollable and yet influential upon the poet and the natural territory in which she has placed herself. In the second stanza we are shown an image of noisy crows circling and protesting , protesting against the ominous presence of the sea which will shortly be encountered. (Line 10) As the speaker describes the birds in the wind as Bits of burnt paper wheeling in a blown sky their protesting voice causes her to remark-I do not think the sea will appear at all.(Lines 1-1) Then the image of lusciousness is compromised as the poet encounters the corruption of excess as she comes to-One bush of berries so ripe it is a bush of flies,/Hanging their blue-green bellies and their wing panes in a Chinese screen./ The honey-feast of the berries has stunned them; they believe in heaven.(Lines 15-17) The cheerful mood of the walker which seemed to exist at the commencement of the poem declines as the undertones of decay and nothingness begin to take over the poets outlook. The reader is left unsettled because of the image of flies, which are usually seen around decay and death.

The third stanza has the colorful image of laundry slapping her in the face and a mechanical image of silversmiths working with an intractable metal. (Line-0) These images are after the beauty of the natural images. There is a strong image of the path, which ends at the hills’ northern face, and the face is orange rock, but the view is of nothing, nothing but a great space. (Line 1) emphasizes the empty and bleak mood of the poem. This is a connection to the nothing sentence at the beginning of the poem. The magnificence of the se is an example of the sublime because of the feeling that there is something terrible there. The beating and beating produces a din that doesnt seem quite natural. (Lines 6-7)As the lane in the poem ends, the wind, becomes more aggressive until at last the speaker is faced with the all-threatening, all-consuming sea which is everywhere. We feel her hysteria is not far away-her sense of hopelessness, although perhaps temporarily appeased by blackberry-picking, has returned with a vengeance.

Entirely, the central image of the 1st stanza is of nature and the blackberries that love and are friendly to her. In the nd stanza, the image is of birds and flies that are protesting. The sea is the central image of the rd stanza with the wind slapping and the sea beating.

The language Plath uses in Blackberrying is colourful as she creates wonderful images. The repetition of blackberries, in the first stanza together with big, ball, ebon, blue-red, and blood all support the image of a profusion of berries. Plath also uses color to cement the mood-the berries are ebon, juices are blue-red, flies are bluegreen, the sea is white and pewter under orange rock. And further, give ear to the linked consonance of green, panes, screen, stunned, heaven wave-rhythms scored throughout the poem, so that we know the oceanic has been inside us all along. Also the language is both rhythmic and lyrical. It is almost as if the voice of the speaker reaches out to the reader. The poem comes directly form the speaker and she is characterized by what she is saying. Plaths morbid fascination with death and how to attain it flow from the poem as if in speech. It makes it easier for one to comprehend death, and that the will to die can be a hidden desire in man himself.

The mood of Blackberrying begins buoyantly and continues, in spite of some sinister undertones, with much optimism to show colorful and vivid descriptions of the nature of the late summer lonely lane and its luscious, if flawed, fruits. This airy positive view suddenly collapses within the last stanza into a form of gloomy certainty with the swift discontinuation of the lane and its replacement by intimidating images of the nihilistic cliffs and ominous oblivion of the sea-this could be referred to as a death image.

There is a path in Sylvia Plaths Blackberrying that the speaker takes to the sea, where poems end is matched to lands end, where we stand enchanted by the rhythms. This path in Blackberrying is, a path in progress. Intractable-by inviting the substance in, by letting it repeat, bear out the raw matter of itself. She has found a way to tract,-it draws, it connects, it manages, it discusses itself. Like most other good poems, it is about poetry, whatever else is at issue. The intractability sends us back, in search of what matters, though the matter itself seems resistant to meaning.

Blackberrying tries to celebrate the fruitfulness of nature-the temporarily comfortable yet despair-prone poetic voice being abruptly overwhelmed by a sense of pointlessness and ruin at the end of the piece. On first reading Blackberrying with its delightful images of innocent activity during a late summer day, I shared the poets own disappointment as her short walk came to an end and she was swamped by a sudden feeling of hopelessness so that I found myself wishing she had just turned her back on the sea and retraced her steps while picking blackberries this time on the left mainly.

Lorene Cary was a black female in a predominately white male society. She chose to go to a boarding school in hope of becoming someone in the future. By making this choice she had to leave her family and closest friends behind, and the issue of retaining her black heritage arose. Cary wanted to succeed in life and set and example for other young black children to follow, but she didn’t want to sell out and leave her black heritage behind in the process. Through this book we discover how Cary was able to over come the challenges facing her and thrive as a young black female without losing her identity. We also learn what society Cary envisions for black youth. We come to understand that she wants young black children to succeed and not fall through the cracks in the ice ahead of them.

The answer to the challenges facing her is illustrated in the title of the book that records her time at St. Pauls. Black Ice refers to what Cary believes will be the perfect world for blacks if they don’t adopt white culture as their own. Cary pictures a world in which her children will move with grace and ease toward success, skating on the strength of their own culture as opposed to falling through the thinner ice of a substitute culture

not strong enough to support them as aspiring black youth. She beings her book by quoting, “ Shall it no longer be said of the daughters of Africa, they have no ambition …?” (begging).

Cary wanted black students to appreciate school, and know that through hard work they will be able to achieve and succeed in life. In one part of the book she says, If you get a really good report card, you feel like you better hide it on the way home (p. 6). I can say that this is true; often in schools students tend to look down on people who are doing good. The kids who are “Gangster” or tuff are the ones that are modeled. However, Cary wants black children to appreciate the values of leaning and be able to stand tall and proud showing that blacks can become important in life. She wants future black children to represent the intellect that black people have; which is hidden in the stereotypes inflicted upon them by society.

In her book she also tells about her belief that blacks should form and work to meet higher standards for themselves, leaving behind the aspects of black culture that encourage youth to become drug dealers, gang members, and gunmen. Cary hopes that blacks can learn and work together, so the future generations can thrive, but she say, “we don’t stick together” ( p. 10). Hopefully blacks can learn to work together as one so their children can grow up and become inspiring young role models.

Black Ice is a compelling autobiographical narrative. As American society becomes increasingly multiracial, more and more young people find themselves as Lorene Cary did, in a strange and unfamiliar world. By attending St. Paul Lorene was

able to find her self and figure out what she wanted in life. She was also able to reflect on her world before St. Paul and see how it can change for the better.

Socially, a person’s educational experience has great impact ones life, especially their culture. Richard Rodriguez was born to a middle class working family where higher education was not sought. By age 0, he completed a Ph.D. in English Renaissance literature. Richard’s and my educational experience was filled with major choices, one of which separated us from our culture.

Even though Richard Rodriguez’s family and mine are from two different backgrounds, our family’s values are alike. In both cases our families were the center of our home life. In Richard’s childhood the kids would play outside together while mom would cook and dad would read the newspaper, “Nights when relatives visited and the front rooms were warmed by Spanish sounds….”(657) In my earlier years, we would try to eat dinner together as often as possible and on Sundays we would have a cookout or go to the ball game. Our families provided us with a sense of security and a comfortable environment.

Richard and I were both embarrassed by our culture. I was the kid who sat in the back of the room so nobody would see me. I did not like the color of my skin. I did not like my mild accent inherited down by the way we talked at home. Richard was happy when he was losing his Spanish accent, “I was still angry at them for having encouraged me toward classroom English…[it] grew more and more attractive to me. I grew increasingly successful, a talkative student.”(656)We both wanted to excel in our education. When I was younger, I wouldtry to achieve more than the average student. I would try to be the first to answer all the questions correctly and was a very obedient student. I therefore became the teacher’s pet. Richard did the same thing in reading, he wanted to read as many classical novels as he could, “I ignored their suggestions of anything I suspected was written for children. (Not until I was in college, as a result, did I read Huckleberry Finn or Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) Instead, I read The Scarlet Letter and Franklin’s Autobiography.”(66) In order to excel in our education we had to give up something that was deeply important to us, our home life. In both of our lives, our educational experiences separated us from our culture and the modern American culture. “There is no trace of his parents’ in his speech. Instead he approximates the accents of teachers and classmates.”(666) As Richard slowly started to read more and more books he, unintentionally, separated himself from his culture. “Books brought me academic success…” with this idea in his mind, Richard concentrated so much on his education that he did not have a balance in his home life. As with my life, I wanted to achieve a level of academic success, to become a medical doctor. I pushed my self at every level. I was the first person to complete with all the assignments. I would go home to my room, read my books and do my homework right away. I would stay there and not come out until I finished all my work, even if I had to miss church.

Both of us, at different times in our lives, realized that our culture wasn’t separating us but we were separating ourselves from our culture, and that was something we did not wan to do. “A primary reason for my academic success in the classroom was that I couldn’t forget that schooling had changed me and separated me from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student”(654), by the time Richard realized this it was too late for him. He lost all that precious time, the time I finally realized I was loosing. I was going to do something about it. I joined my church service group and volunteered with them all around the city. I would go to religious lectures held by high official church members, to learn about my religious traditions. I attended culture and social events held by my church. I did all of this to keep my culture, my religion, and my heritage. I realized that all these objects would mold and form me into the person that I would become.

An individual has to realize that they need a balance in their life. I recognized this reason, and unlike Richard, strived to make a change in my life so that I could carry on my culture. Although Richard Rodriguez and I are two very different people from different backgrounds, we realized that our culture was a very important part of our lives and that you need to strive for the best but also maintain your culture. Don’t be ashamed of your culture because it is your culture, your tradition, which makes the individual you are.

Macbeth

Was Macbeth a tragic hero? Or was he a crazed serial killer who thrived upon the killings of both friends and enemies? Shakespeare’s knowledge of human nature was confirmed again by this tragedy, which reflects the idea of crime and consequence. Macbeth is the story of a well - respected soldier, whose ambition is his fatal weakness. The timely prophecies of three witches about his future confirm his ambition of becoming king and aided by his cunning wife who shares his desires he is driven to evil. In this essay I will try to prove that he had “vaulting ambition” rather than just being a cold - blooded murderer.

Macbeth has all the qualities of a classic Shakespearean tragic hero. He was of high birth and position, Thane of Glamis and co-leader with best friend Banquo of the king’s army. Although co-leader the king speaks of him more frequently than his counterpart and therefore I consider him the senior out of the two. This is confirmed in Act One Scene Two when Duncan receives reports back about the proceedings of the battles; at not one time in this report is there a mention of Banquo only of “Brave Macbeth” and without even Macbeth speaking a word you get the impression that he is a strong loyal character whom everyone respects.

Of all these features of a tragic hero the most important is his ambition, which is played upon by circumstances. I consider this very important as Macbeth’s ambition was triggered by the prophecies of the witches. There is also a hint of evil in Macbeth from the first time he talks “ so foul and fair a day I have not seen” This echoes the first words of the witches “Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair”! This I believe is more than coincidental. The witch’s prophecies are “All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! The second is All hail Macbeth, hail to thee Thane of Cawdor! And “All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” These prophecies are to the play as the thoughts of becoming king have already tempted Macbeth and I believe the witches knew this. When the witch’s prophesise that MacBeth shall be king, he starts as in fear this shows initially that he had at least some sort of conscious. The suggestion is that is that they give utterance to his own secret thought. When they vanish instead of answering Banquo’s question “good sir, why do you start, and seem to fear things that do sound so fair” he exclaims “would they had stay’d” Banquo however is surprised by Macbeths reaction to what seem so “fair” not knowing that fair words have provoked evil thoughts twice already in the play.

Lady Macbeth is a very important character in the play. As I believe that it is her taunts that eventually makes up Macbeths mind into killing his friend and king .As in Act One Scene Seven Macbeth leaves the supper he has prepared for Duncan early. At this moment he speaks a crucial soliloquy in the play. He shows his concern towards the projected murder. He gives three reasons for not performing the murder “First, I am his kinsman and his subject both strong against the deed; then as, his host”. The second reason is “he is here in double trust” and finally “Besides, this Duncan hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office”. At this point Macbeth openly admits that ambition is the only reason to kill the king “ I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself, and falls on th’ other” and this is the first time he does so as he knows all to well the horrors of what he is proposing to do. As Lady Macbeth enters Macbeth tells her he will not go through with the murder of Duncan and she accuses him of not loving her and disgracing his manhood. She describes him as to full of “the milk o’ the human kindness” an extra-ordinary statement in the light of the murders he commits. This act is vital and without the influence of the witches and his wife Macbeth show that Macbeth would not have murdered Duncan as he shows weaknesses before and after the murder. Throughout the play MacBeth shows a sense of morality. A good example of this is the banquet scene. This scene suggests he is becoming mentally unhinged as he to sees an apparition of the murdered Banquo. Before he sees the ghost he is a good host and very welcoming of his guests but when told Banquo’s son Fleance has escaped from the murderers he say” here comes my fit again”.

The last act of the play is emotional as it shows that Macbeth is not just a cold-blooded murderer as he has regrets about his life, “ I have lived long enough. My way of life is fallen into the sear, the yellow leaf; And that which should accompany old age, as honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,” Ironically these are qualities of Duncan the king he murdered had and I feel he saw Duncan as someone to be admired. That’s why he had such difficulty killing him In the second last scene Macbeth became his old self a warrior in battle who believed he was invincible due to the second set of witch’s prophecies. This stated he could not be killed by a man who was woman born he was indomitable until to Birnam wood came to Dunsinane, Hectate, the head of the witches warned him to beware Macduff and as it turned out Macduff was not of woman born, as he was “untimely ripp’d” from his mother’s womb. Mac duff’s final taunt inspires Macbeth to fight to the death and not imitate the ancient Romans who thought it was honourable to commit suicide when faced with overwhelming odds” Why should I play the Roman fool and die on mine own sword” an admirable ending for a true hero.

The ending proves that Macbeth was primarily a warrior, though succumbing to the temptation that the witches a proposed to him, it’s courage I came to admire the most about him confirmed when he declared at his death scene“ I will not yield” He will take on his fate as well as Macduff “yet I will try to the last”. While it does not mitigate the crimes it does enable us to see the return of the valiant warrior whom was lavished with praise in the first scene by his superiors.

Tax them and they will play. If it were that easy, the issue of building the Seattle Mariners a new stadium would have been settled during last weeks primary elections. What I don’t understand is why didn’t it pass. Do the citizens of King county feel repressed because they are already taxed to the hilt. Possibly. However, I don’t feel that the people of King county were informed enough to make the decision, and if they were they sure didn’t respond as educated voters should. If the Mariners are sold and move to Washington D.C., which is the most likely spot for them to move, it would effect the whole state of Washington.

As I type this Govenor Lowery and the state legislature are quickly trying to ratify some sort of new and improved state and local tax package. State tax; wait a minute, doesn’t that effect me and you and the rest of the citizens of the state of Washington outside of the mis-informed King county. Sure it does, but are we going to get a chance to vote on it? Probably not. As far as the state legislature is concerned, we got our chance last week. Now it is time for them to act, and act fast before they lose one of the biggest revenue earning organizations the state has.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Mariners leave Seattle now after the best season in franchise history. Sure the Mariners haven’t given the city of Seattle much of a reason to keep them. It has taken 17 years for the club to get on the hottest win streak in the whole national baseball league, but hey, Rome wasn’t built overnight. During the last three home games the Kingdome was sold out. At $1 dollars a person times 55,000 per game, that’s over 1.1 million dollars times three games totals out to over . million dollars. That’s just in ticket sales alone.

The apparel and retail industry throughout the history of our nation has always been motivated to try and come up with ways to increase their profits by driving the costs of their products as low as possible. The solution to many of these corporations’ problems has always seemed to be simple enough. The exploitation of people across the oceans in foreign lands for cheap labor is the common solution to these companies, whether in the apparel, athletics and sports products, or other types of industries to maintain a stable margin of profit at others expense. Sweatshops have become the means for companies in the retail industry in America to keep their customers satisfied, and at the same time make an unthinkable amount of profit off of the cheap labor that helps to create the products that line the shelves. This epidemic is occurring at an alarming rate with across the nation. The worst of which is the result of major apparel industry companies in New York and the greater Los Angeles area. In New York, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Secretary Alexis Herman disclosed information that “6 percent of the sewing contractors in the New York City garment industry were in violation of the minimum wage or overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.” (CNN.com) The common American consumer, whether they know it or not, holds the power that drives the operation of the sweatshop. Because of this, it is our responsibility as consumers to demand that the products we purchase are made with a standard of morality and not in oppressing sweatshop conditions. The action must be taken in order to observe those individuals rights as our fellow brothers and sisters of the world and bring an abrupt halt to this epidemic, no matter the cost.

People everywhere must recognize that the unethical practices that no human should have to face occur on a daily basis in sweatshops. There is no reason for one human being on one side of the planet to suffer a ridiculous amount of torture in order to produce a product to satisfy another person. Humans must be treated fairly everywhere with no exceptions, and not have to endure hardships and cruelty for someone else’s benefit. That is exactly what is going on in the modern day operations of sweatshops. Individuals must work ridiculous hours, sometimes seven days a week facing sexual harassment, discrimination, and even physical abuse from their overseers. Companies like Nike, Gap and other major retailers are fully aware of these conditions, as are many of the customers who buy their products, but these practices still continue. Cooperation between both the retailers and their customers is necessary to eliminate this problem. The most probable solution would be for the retailers to be required by law to present the consumer with a list of how and where their products are made, and under what conditions. The consumer must then evaluate this list and come to a conclusion as to whether they agree with the practice that went into creating the product and decide whether it was produced in an ethical manner that they agree with.

Some say that the solution to this problem is not an easy one to come to. By solving this problem, it may create another, the prices of the products made, as cost efficiently as they were in sweatshops would escalate. This is a small price to pay however, and the major issue of fair and ethical treatment of all humanity should really be the primary concern for everyone.

Abstract

When we discuss the subject of economics, terms such as supply, demand, and equilibrium price are often mentioned. It is also common to see graphs which contain the supply and demand curve. We might ask, why are these terms so important when discussing economics? The answer is because these terms are the key components in the subject of economics. Therefore, before we can fully understand economics we must first understand the terms and how they are related.

Article Analysis

Demand can be described as the relationship between the price and quantity demanded for a particular good or service in specific circumstance. For each price provided, the demand relationship will tell the quantity that the customers are willing to purchase at a corresponding price. The quantity the customers are willing to purchase at a particular price is called the Quantity Demanded. An important thing to do is distinguish between demand and the quantity demanded. To explain the concept, the buyers are the people who want or need the product or service. The term demand refers to the willingness and ability of customers to purchase the good or service in the market. The demand relationship expresses the willingness and ability for the whole assortment of prices. To claim that a customer has a demand for a particular item is to declare that the customer has money with which to buy the item and is willing to exchange the money for the item. Customers do not demand what they do not truly want or need; therefore, a want or a need that lacks purchasing power is not a demand. With that in mind, it is not enough that the suppliers possess the good or the ability to perform a service. Economists usually treat supply symmetrically as demand. This means that they treat supply as a correlation between price and the quantity supplied. Supply also means willingness to sell, and the supplier must be willing to sell the item or service at a price that the customers will demand it. Demand is not a particular quantity since the quantity that people are willing and able to purchase will change in response to the price changes. There is a methodical relationship between the price in the marketplace and the quantity that customers are willing and able to purchase. This relationship is called the demand relationship. The amount that customers buy at each price level is called the quantity demanded at that price. (Essential Principles of Economics, 00)

In economics the relations of supply and demand is understood as the equilibrium. Think of demand as a force which tends to increase the price of a good or service. Then think of supply as a force which tends to reduce the price. When the two forces are balanced, the price will neither increase or decrease they will be stable. This analogy allows us to think of the stable or natural price in a particular market as the equilibrium price. This type of equilibrium exists when the price is high enough that the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded. On a diagram the equilibrium is the price at which the two curves intersect. The subsequent quantity is the amount that will be traded in a market equilibrium. (Essential Principles of Economics, 00)

The Law of Demand states that the demand curve is downward sloping. There are two types of change in demand. The first is movement along the demand curve, and the second is a shift among the demand curve. A movement along the curve is usually caused by a change in the price of the good or service. For example, a decline in the price of the good results in an increase of demand. An increase in price causes a reduction of demand. A shift in the demand curve is generated by a change in any non-price factor of demand. The curve can shift to the right or left depending on the situation. A rightward shift represents an increase in the total quantity demanded, as shown with D1 to D, while a leftward shift signifies a decrease in the total quantity demanded shown with D1 to D.

(Spotlight on Theory, 00)

These movements can be caused by several factors. A change in customer’s income such as when their income increases will affect the demand. When this occurs customers usually buy more normal or luxury items and the demand curve will shift to the right as shown with D1 to D. Another change factor is when there is a change in price of supplementary goods. If the price of a substitute good increases then the demand for the good will decline. This will cause a leftward shift in the demand curve of any complementary good D1 to D. The reverse can also occur. If the price of the substitute good rises, then the demand for the other good will increase as the customers switch their purchasing patterns D1 to D. Changes in tastes and fashions also affect the demand. If a good becomes fashionable then the demand for the good will shift to the right D1 to D. Or the good can become outdated and the shift will move to the left (Spotlight on Theory, 00).

Demand is the relationship between the price of the item and the quantity that consumers are willing to buy. Supply is the relation between the price and the amount that producers are willing to sell. When we apply these two concepts, we discover the market equilibrium with the price and quantity at the intersection of the supply and demand chart. When we tie all of the concepts together we can identify a price high enough that the quantity demanded will be equal to quantity supplied as well as the quantity corresponding to that price.
