The Clod and The Pebble

William Blake is somewhat confusing to me. I have read this poem over and over until I could somewhat figure it out. He was raised in the mid seventeen hundreds and the early eighteen hundreds. He studied engraving, Gothic art and printing.

The meaning that I got out of this poem was that love could be cold-hearted and selfish and it could also be warm and innocence. In this poem Blake used The Clod and The Pebble to be the symbols of love. The Clod is representing the good and The Pebble is representing something like a stone. When it says “Love seeketh not Itself to please, Nor for itself hath care; But for another gives its ease, And builds a Heaven in Hell’s despair”, I think Blake was showing that love can be unselfish. There is enough love for everyone not just for certain things or people. The love for others is passionate and is happy. When he says “Heaven in Hell’s despair”, I think he is saying that it’s not afraid of the evil, as long as you are positive and truly trust worthy, you can over power the bad with the good. When he states “Trodden with the cattle’s feet” I think he is saying that The Clod is being stepped on, or being taken advantage of and sometimes being stumbled over. “But a Pebble in the brook Warbled out these metres meet”, I think he was saying that someday the good and the bad will meet. The Pebbled in this poem is portrayed to be hard as a rock and selfish. “Love seekth only Self to please” I think he meant that love was being selfish that’s why I think Blake capitalized Self. It wants everything to revolve around The Pebble only. When he speaks on to bind another to its delights it means that The Pebble is trying to hold love for itself instead of letting it be shared with everyone. “Joys in another’s loss of ease”, its saying that The Pebble enjoys to see others hurt. It doesn’t really know how to be sensitive to others feelings. At the end when he says “builds a Hell in Heavens Despite”, The Pebble is saying that love will take away all of the positive images despite whatever The Clod is expressing.

I think Blake wrote this poem to illustrate the good and the bad of love. Although they are different is some ways, they are also alike in others ways. You have to give some and take some. The poem shows that even with some being selfish and some being unselfish, there is still a commonplace, heaven or hell.

Jack not so Hungry for Burger King, Allison Jackson, The Sydney Morning Herald

I have just recently studied in Australia, and one of the restaurants I frequently visited was Hungry Jack’s. Hungry Jack’s was identical to Burger King, same colors, the whopper, the whole nine yards. Except for one thing, the name, but what was weird is Australia also had Burger King’s. This has puzzled me since I have been back, but after a little bit of reading and research, I have found the answer to my puzzle. The problem begins with the difficulty of international trademarks.

In 171, a business entrepreneur named Jack Cowen negotiated the right to be the Australian franchisee of Burger Kings. But with the Burger King name already copyrighted, he went with “Hungry Jack’s”. Since then Mr. Cowen has seen Hungry Jacks grow to 0 franchised outlets. With Hungry Jack’s, being such a success, and Australia being a fast growing market Burger King wanted their share. “Burger King wanted Cowin to change the Hungry Jacks’s outlet to the Burger King brand when the copyright ended, though Cowen resisted.” Burger King then attempted to persuade franchisees to change from the Hungry Jack’s brand to the Burger King name. “A lengthy battle ensued, ending in June 001 with Burger King ordered by an Australian court to pay $75 million to Hungry Jack’s for breach of its franchise agreement.” Even after the legal battle, and bad blood between the two, Cowen wanted to merge his Hungry Jack’s franchise with Burger King.

Upon further research in the South Florida Business Journal, I found that Mr. Cowen was successful in his merging. The 81 current Burger Kings in Australia will be rebranded as Hungry Jack’s. In addition to the rebranding, Burger King has plans to start up another 100 new Hungry Jacks within five years. Burger King realized they messed up in the past, but new that the growing market for fast food in Australia was too good to refuse.

This article answered my puzzle, there were Hungry Jack’s because there was a trademark for Burger King’s name at the time of starting the franchise, and there were Burger King’s because that trademark had ended. Back in 171, when Cowen wanted start up a Burger King franchise, there had already been someone with the trademark Burger King. This could mean two things. One, a person knew that Burger King was going to be successful and bought the trademark rights to Burger King in Australia, before Burger King or any of its franchisee’s could. Two, someone already had a restaurant with the Burger King name. These are obstacles that companies have to overcome, in order to go international. It just shows how complicated and difficult it is for companies to go global or international. Every country has a different set of laws to overcome. In the case of Burger King, they avoided trademark laws in the 70’s when they came up with Hungry Jacks. But when the trademark ended they wanted all the restaurants to be renamed Burger King. The only problem with this is that the Hungry Jack’s name had been entrenched in the Australian fast food market. When Burger King tried to influence the Hungry Jack’s to change their name, they broke their franchise agreement and were sued. In the end Burger King realized it was better to cooperate with Cowen and Hungry Jack’s, and decided to change all the Burger Kings to Hungry Jack’s.

Conflict Resolution Strategies

With the advent of organizations using teamwork to solve problems, it has become important to develop conflict resolution tactics. Effective tactics developed, though described in different ways in different organizations, are, avoidance, accommodation, compromise, competition, and collaboration (Thompson et al. 41-4).

Before using an approach, it is important to remember that a certain level of conflict is critical to the success of the team. Conflict offers a chance for ideas to be exchanged and optimal solutions to be developed. According to K. A. Jehn, he states that, “Groups with an absence of task conflict may miss new ways to enhance their performance, while very high levels of task conflict may interfere with task completion.” (5) With this knowledge, it is important to identify when conflict is becoming destructive instead of creative. Conflict is destructive when; negativism develops, or a team member becomes hardened within a position, or the group becomes divided into sub-groups, or group productivity is decreased (Thompson et al. ). Avoidance is the lone solution in conflict resolution that may overlook the best idea for a group, so it is important to understand when conflict becomes destructive. In avoiding conflict there must be consensus between members that the group is at an impasse. Three reasons that justify the use of avoidance are; time constraints, emotional issues, and timing (41-4).

When teams are brought together, they are often given time requirements that need to be factored in achieving their goals. Conflict is good when the topic continues to be discussed in greater detail, but becomes an issue when the amount of time expended becomes excessive. Time allotments should be determined before discussing conflicting topics. To solve this problem, assign a person from the group to take note of the amount of time that has expired. This person will notify the group at the expiration of time. At this time, the group should vote action to be taken.

Often, when people work with topics that they are familiar with, they become emotionally attached to one way of thinking. Discussions related to the topic can be difficult since personal feelings are involved. In a team setting, your own feelings may prevent you from being impartial to new ideas. If you, or a person in the group, are unable to control your emotions about a topic, you need to let other members of the group solve the problem (4). Emotions often get in the way and do not allow for new ideas to be presented. Members of the team should be honest with each other and identify situations that are emotional. Your avoidance in this instance will allow the group to move forward while exploring solutions.

When new ideas are presented to a group they might be difficult to understand when first presented. If time is given to the presenter to explain more thoroughly, the idea might turn out to be better than when first presented. Sometimes we are totally unprepared or taken by surprise by an idea (4). Having time to think the idea through will allow you time to explore the idea. The extra time allows you the opportunity to think of ways to expand the initial thought for a better end result.

When selecting a conflict strategy, we must keep in mind that the process will eventually promote positive changes within the team. Take for example, the accommodating resolution style, which is used to purposely elevate the other person, making him/her feel better about the situation. According to Bruce A. Blitman the accommodating style is, “unassertive and cooperative the opposite of the competing personality” (1). The accommodating approach can be utilized to help build confidence, and rapport with a team member with whom we are having a conflict. Perhaps, this strategy may be seeing with a degree of submissiveness, because we respond to others view with empathy, and value their perspective by showing sensitivity. In the book “Tools for Teams Building Effective Teams in the Workplace”, Leigh Thompson outlined three instances when the accommodating style can be used; when you are sure you made a mistake, the issue is more important to the opponent, and preserving the relationship is more significant than the issue (4). Based on the theory developed by David Antonioni, he suggests that “outgoing, social individuals are drawn to use the accommodating resolution approach as their default style. Because they posses strong interaction skills, and manage situations with trust and flexibility, during the negotiation phase.” (7)

Although, the accommodating style embraces conflicts in a passive way, we need to be prudent in the manner in which we utilized it. We can not accept other’s view, when we know we are right and the other person is either wrong or unethical. If we allow the unethical behavior of the other person with who we are dealing with, to continue it will critically affect the future relationship of the team.

In situations, where both parties have equal power and are committed to a special goal, a more appropriate strategy would be to compromise. The compromising style will facilitate the achievement of a temporary agreement during difficult issue or may even allow a more practical solution.

According to David Antonioni, “The compromising style is more challenging than any of the other styles because it consists of a blend between mutual problem solving, and yielding. In compromising, both parties give up something in order to reach a mutual acceptable solution, but it does mean splitting the difference and exchanging concessions” (8). This strategy can be regarded as a bargaining tool necessary due to deadlines or other constraints.

However, the general results are not usually the best. We often choose the compromising approach as a last resort, in particular, when the other methods have failed and we are looking for neutral ground. As a last resort, this only encourages a “Band aid” sort of fix that does not satisfy either side, and it may lead to this conflict resurrecting itself.

Before opting to get into a compromise style, decide in your own mind, which needs, or wants are negotiable, and which are not. Remember this method works best when both parties are right about something, but basically have different values or opinions.

Another method or strategy to resolve conflict within a work team is the use of competition. Competition, as the name implies, is a direct challenge between two members of a team or two opposing sides within the team. Employing the use of this strategy must be given careful consideration, since chances are that feelings will be bruised and cooperation within the team will diminish significantly if this technique is used.

With that being said, the question becomes “Why would anyone go this route, or even think about using this method?” The answers are relatively simple and straightforward. Using competition to resolve conflict within a team cuts right to the heart of the matter, and thereby reduces the amount of time spent discussing and negotiating the topic. Another reason would be that you know, without a doubt, what you are saying is 100% correct and that there are no gray shaded areas. Or perhaps you have encountered opposition that simply wants to run right over you and you find yourself needing to defend yourself and your rights (Thompson et al. 4).

There are some economic benefits to using this method in spite of the potential drawbacks. The Academy of Management Journal study found that managers spend 0% of their time dealing with conflict (Hessel A). Apply 0% to a manger’s salary in today’s workplace, multiplied by the number of work teams that may be operational at any given moment, and the cost savings could be staggering. According to Warren P. Naylor, System Safety Manager for BAE Systems in Rockville, Maryland, “Schedules for programs have become increasingly more aggressive, contracts have become increasingly more restrictive and start dates are continually pushed back without corresponding relief on the back end, resulting in extremely compressed schedules.” (Ingebretsen ).

As mentioned earlier the use of this strategy needs careful consideration due to the negative consequences that may result. One of the most prolific results is the increase in stress levels that individuals on the team may encounter. In a study published in the International Journal of Conflict Management, it was noted that “recent research suggests that personality can impact stress in two ways. First, personality may predispose an individual to use particular coping methods mechanisms in the face of stressors. Second, in addition to shaping one’s response to stress, personality may impact the stressors themselves.” (Currall et al. )

Therefore, one could imply that the impact and implication to the use of competition as a strategy to resolve conflict can have both positive effects, both in the short term and in long term. While the short term effects may be desirable to keep the team on track in meeting a scheduled commitment date, and thus reducing the overall costs by minimizing the amount of time and resources needed to resolve a conflict. The long term implications are that individual members of a team find themselves in situations that carry increased stress and can harbor long term ill feelings toward not just the members of their team, but can also permeate and fester within the overall organization.

The final strategy for resolving conflict is the use of collaboration. As the name implies collaboration is the skillful art of negotiating. As with the other strategies previously described, there are times when the use of this strategy may be better suited to resolving conflict. Some of the reasons for attempting this approach may be to have shared responsibility in the final decision of the team. This can be especially true when a team is chartered to correct a process within an organization that could eventually lead to downsizing within the organization. Another reason for seeking collaboration would be if the team’s charter were to retool the overall organization resulting in individual fiefdoms being consolidated to further meet the organization’s need for improved efficiencies to compete in today’s marketplace. Collaboration also mitigates the negative effects of hard feelings and direct conflict within a team. By obtaining the consensus of all involved, the team can continue to move forward in a positive manner.

So, how does one go about negotiating with both individual and within the team? According to CORE R.O.I., Inc, they list the following as essential contributors to reaching consensus and agreement within the team and with individuals

“Involve everyone in the discussion and decision-making process.

Listen and pay attention to what others have to say.

Be cautions of early, quick, easy agreements.

Avoid compromising.

Avoid competing, arguing and trying to ‘win.’

Don’t ‘give in’ just to ‘go along.’

Use different opinions to enhance the decision’s quality.

Avoid voting.

Take action to reduce tension.

Work on the most important or controversial considerations.

Use a blend of information, logic, emotion and intuition.” (Thompson et al. CD-ROM)

However, this approach also carries with it some negative aspects. When collaboration is used, it requires more time to skillfully negotiate through a sticking point. If the team is working to a short deadline or suspense, the time to negotiate and reach common consensus will undoubtedly place it at great risk of failing to meet its objectives. As was previously highlighted during the pro’s of using competition as a strategy to resolve conflict, this additional time also means additional costs and resources will be required.

Institute Book of Readers Theater

Written by William Adams

The Institute Book of Readers Theatre; A Practical Guide for School, Theater, and Community, by William Adams is a very user-friendly handbook for students and teachers, as well as any person who has any interest in Readers Theatre. The Forward to this textbook as well as the section entitled, “How To Use This Book” do a very specific job of outlining the book’s uses and purposes. Both sections explain quite well that Readers Theatre is a broad art and not only can it be applied to any educational subject matter, but it can also be used in other more therapeutic types of institutions. The “Pick and Choose” portion of the introduction instructs the reader very clearly about how to use the table of contents. The concept, I believe, is a very insightful one and makes the textbook a comprehensive source for any person using Readers Theatre for any of it’s many useful reasons. Having the section called “Part Two School” broken up into three main divisions and four subdivisions based on grade levels, helps the reader focus quickly on the specific grade level at hand instead of flipping through page after page trying to find something that suits the subject. Above and beyond having a break down of different grade levels, the book goes on with Part Three and Part Four. “Part Three Theater” and “Part Four Community” provide ample information and instruction on other widespread functions of Readers Theatre. It makes sense to separate these sections, as the purpose and practice of Readers Theatre in the classroom will most often be different than any kind of Readers Theatre in another setting.

Part one outlines script making, staging, and oral interpretation. Each section goes detailed step by detailed step with several examples demonstrating each point. It often not only explains that there are artistic choices to be made, but also provides information on why each works and what effect each creates. For instance, within the chapter on staging, there is a small section on focus. Here, the differences between onstage focus, offstage focus and audience focus are discussed and reasons for using each are explained.

I found each section of parts two, three and four, to be very appropriately written. The examples in the younger grade levels are clearly examples that a younger child would relate to and understand. As the grades progress naturally, so do the examples. For instance, the “Early Elementary School” section uses nursery rhymes like Hickory Dickory Dock. It also gives day-by-day teaching instructions and lessons plans for developing “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. The Middle School section moves on to examples that are more relevant to middle school students like the script called “Punctuation Marks!” and a more serious social subject of “Sexual Harassment”. Along with the plentiful script examples are a whole variety of helpful advice. Tips are given in the areas of humor, theme, movement, character and gender.

All in all, I found this book to be very comprehensive and user-friendly. It is entirely well written, very clear and very thorough. This book could easily be used by a teacher to aid in the instruction of a Readers Theatre class and/or to supplement teaching in any class at a pre-kindergarten to the university level. It would also be a helpful resource for a student in a Readers Theatre class.

Hall of Famer, Lou Gherig, once said, “There is no room in baseball for discrimination. It is our national pastime and a game for all”(ZNET).

Baseball America’s favorite pastime. Hot dogs. Draft beer. Tamales? Baseball is commonly considered to be an American pastime, a source of entertainment for the Anglo, blue-collar workingman. What is not known is the role baseball played in the lives of Mexican Americans, and the struggles to earn acceptance among the Caucasian inhabitants of the United States, especially in California. Such a function would only be a fragment of the imagination if it weren’t for Vincent Nava, a Mexican American and native of San Francisco. He was believed to be the founding figure in establishing acceptance for Mexicans in an American baseball league. Another noteworthy factor was America’s need for Mexican labor, which eventually led to immigrants taking up the pastime. With the development of leagues involving Mexicans in California, the sport became more widely accepted in other states. More specifically, Los Tecolotes, a Mexican baseball team situated in both Texas and Mexico, set the standard for other Hispanic teams and leagues. With an essential figure such as Vincent Nava and Mexicans responding to the need for labor, baseball was able to flourish amongst the Hispanic culture in both the United States and in Mexico.

Vincent Nava, often praised as the greatest catcher of his time to be developed locally, was considered to be the pioneer of a wave of Mexicans playing baseball in California. This point is made in Joel S. Frank’s book, Whose Baseball? when he states, “[Nava] was a pioneering Latino professional baseball player at a time in his home state when Californians of Mesoamerican, South American, and Native American backgrounds experienced powerful forces of marginalization and dispossession”(Franks, 47). A mestizo in appearance, Nava was of Mexican decent, but often confused to be of a Cuban or African American

background. As a result of such resemblance, he had to go to great lengths to avoid Jim Crow. The Jim Crow laws barred African Americans from access to employment and to public places such as restaurants, hotels, and other facilities. To avoid this, Vincent Nava, once known as Sandy Irwin, acquired his mother’s maiden name and moved east to play baseball. Originally a backup catcher, his position became known as merely a fill-in player to pitchers and infielders that needed it. With his patience and work ethic, he emerged as on of the better catchers in a league filled with Anglo-Americans. In 1878, “The Chronicle” declared “that as a catcher he was one of the best belonging to any of the clubs composing the league and that… his equal would be hard to find”(Franks, 47). This was the inspiration that many other Mexican Americans of his time needed to prove they could make it in a time run by whites, let alone a predominantly Caucasian baseball league. Franks beautifully states how Nava made a difference in the California baseball system when he says, “The emergence of … Nava… among the ranks of California’s top ball players suggests the growing plebian, culturally diverse nature of the game in the Golden State”(Franks, 48). Such emergence created the sense of motivation for future Mexican Americans to no longer look at baseball as an Anglo-exclusive pastime.

Another key factor in the establishment of Mexicans in baseball was the growing need for labor in America and the groups that consequently formed. As a result of the Anti-Asian movement, which barred certain Asians from immigrating to the United States, the need for “cheap” labor drove employers to look to Mexico. The new availability of work led to mass migrations into California and other parts of the country. A perfect example of this is shown in the rising population of Mexicans in Los Angeles. “In 100, for example, there were 1,61 people in Los Angeles born in Mexico. Ten years later, there were 11,7 Mexican-born Angelenos and, in 10, around 0,000”(Franks, 184). While perceived as inferior to the native-born, white population, Hispanics were praised as a solution to California’s labor problem. Baseball comes into play with such labor communities as a solution to cultural and societal issues. Important purposes the sport served were to deflect younger members of their communities from widely frowned upon and illegal pastimes and to show the ancestries had a sense of morality. Also, a significant factor was that Mexican Americans felt as a part of their reform that they had to adjust to the new world they lived in. Baseball “discouraged the growth of cultural practices and institutions which [immigrants] had to surrender if they were to adapt to the modern world”(Franks, 6). This societal need for baseball led to the surfacing of an informal Mexican league that consisted of labor groups and village teams. In 11, the Los Angeles Times covered an indoor baseball game at a local recreation between a Mexican team and a team of Anglo Americans, which was the first of its kind. Although the “white” team won 6-, it paved the way for an expansion of Mexican baseball leagues all over California, including clubs situated in the Bay Area and Sacramento. Eventually, Hispanic leagues and teams became more accepted throughout other states.

A considerable example of how acceptance of the involvement of Mexicans in baseball changed can be seen through the Tecolotes baseball team. In 1, the only foreign baseball league to hold official status in the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues was a AAA minor league known as the Mexican League. The Tecolotes, or Owls, more commonly known by the abbreviated nickname, “Tecos,” were one of the league’s charter franchises. The team was originally named “La Junta Federales de Mejoras Materiales” because the it was headed by a group of Army generals, but by 14, they were known to institute the first night games, which is when they appropriately acquired the name, the Owls. Although the team was affiliated with the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo, what signifies this as a historical achievement were the players, fans, and contests that came from Laredo, Texas. By crossing over the Mexican border to Texas for the sole purpose of baseball stressed the importance of such a sport to a Mexican public that once was unable to take part in the event. Jim McKay, author of the book, Masculinities, Gender Relations, and Sport, stressed this importance by saying, “No matter which side of the Rio Grande fielded teams, the players and fans were just as like to come from the other side”(McKay, 7). The progress did not stop there. The sport reached another level when a single team compromised of the best athletes was chosen to represent that region. This binationalism was finally formalized in 185 when the Tecos finally became known as the Owls of the Two Laredos, becoming the only binational sports franchise in the world. More success in establishing the league followed when Caucasians began participating in the sport, more stadiums were built, and the relationship between the cities of Laredo and Nuevo Laredo remained strong. Such accounts can be seen in the following passage

The Tecos came to have two home fields in two countries, played two national anthems before each game, had the owner living in Nuevo Laredo and the general manager and vice president living in Laredo, had a constituency in both countries, and had a team made up of Anglos and Mexicans (McKay, 7).

This official AAA minor league came a long way in advancing the status of Mexican Americans in the baseball system in America and also pushed on the boundaries that subtly remained between Anglo Americans and Hispanics in the sport.

Many factors led to the rise of Mexicans in baseball. The talent of Vincent Nava led the way and gave courage to others of the same nationality to play the sport. In response to the need for labor, Mexicans migrated to California and, as a part of their reform, began taking up American traditions, such as this favorite pastime. And, in culmination of the steps taken to achieve the equality that can exist behind home plate, Los Tecos showed that not only can Caucasians and Mexicans coexist in the same sport, but also set a worldwide standard in binationalism by expanding the horizons of the sport into Mexico. Baseball may be America’s favorite pastime, but the next time you are at a baseball game appreciating your hot dog and beer, take the time to appreciate the diversity of the sport, and the many steps taken to achieve it.

THE TRADITIONAL CENTRAL THAI HOUSE

The traditional Thai house, with its characteristic features of a wooden house on a high platform, pre-fabricated wall panels and gables, and elegantly tapering roof is among the most beautiful wooden houses found in Southeast Asia. Regionally, the traditional Thai houses are subjected to be different. This paper will be dedicated for the traditional Thai house in central region of Thailand where geographical, cultural and religious conditions had designed the house as they were.

The central region Thai house has a high platform and spacious terrace, which is well-suited to the tropical climate, avoids annual flooding and provides space underneath of the house for traditional activities such as the Thai New Year. The pre-fabricated wall panels and gables were suitable for a country where land was abundant and houses could be moved easily. For the roof covering, Gaps at the apex of the roof structure need a special tiled or thatched cover to prevent leaking.

In the past, the house in central region of Thailand was considered as an integral part of a village community. As a culture, villagers helped each others in building their houses and village communities. Considering the village, geographical condition is a major determinant in the look of the village.

By types of village, riverside villages, villagers depended mainly on water for domestic and agricultural uses as well as transportation so that the community expanded in a linear formation along the waterway.

Cluster-type village was usually located on high ground above the rice fields. Villagers would build their houses in a single cluster in the outlying fields on the edges of community. In that period of time, main rains and annual flooding naturally formed a large water pond, in which supports all lives in the village.

Loose village is another type of village, which grew out of many isolated houses scattered among their own fields over a large area. These houses may originally have developed from rice field huts. Due to their physical isolation, villagers could hardly develop a close - knit community like other communities.

Family structure and the way of life have influenced on traditional central Thai house planning. It could be typed in five different ways.

A nuclear family single house the residences are a husband, a wife and their unmarried children. The house itself comprised of sleeping unit, kitchen, verandah and terrace. A sleeping unit is divided into three span structures. One is used as an open hall. The other two are bedrooms. A verandah is normally covered and located in front of the sleeping unit, connecting the latter to a terrace. The terrace then connects to the kitchen.

A stem family clustered house this type of house grows out from a nuclear family single house after one of the children gets married. It is a Thai custom for married men to live with the wife’s family . The house, thus, needs adding or changing to accommodate a new family member. Normally, the family chooses to build a separate house connected to the old house.

A wealthy family house basically the size is larger and the design is more elegant than the clustered house. It consists of the main house of the group, minor house and central hall. The structure of the house has only three walls, the forth next to the verandah being left open as a living area. The kitchen is at the back and the right angle to the main house of the group.

Kuti there is no distinction in Thai architecture between the styles used for religious and secular buildings. Thus, the traditional Thai dwelling was also be used to house monks. Typically, the size of Kuti is small enough for a single monk. Three to six urban Kuti, however, share the same composition, floor plan and structural elements of the traditional clustered house. All Kuti are generally arranged in groups or rows, connected by a central terrace with a dining hall or prayer hall in the middle.

Riverside shop houses early Thais depended largely on rivers and canals for domestic use, irrigation and transportation. Riverside shop houses were thus settled. With trading at front and residential uses at the back of the house, all shop houses are connected with a wooden walkway bridge.

Roadside shop houses similarity to riverside shop houses, land-based shop house has a dual-purpose of trading and residential uses. A verandah is situated at front for trading and displaying goods. It is lower than the main house and it is raised less than sork (a Thai unit of measurement equivalent to the span of an adult’s elbow) above the ground. The underneath of the house is for storing carts.

Structural characteristics of the traditional central Thai house are mainly the prefabricated and portable structure. All the components are wood. It is essentially a post-and-beam structure, the gravitational factors being transmitted from the roof to the ground. The floor area is wider than the space at the top on all sides. A wider base has some benefits. It confers structural strength and stability. It also helps in attaching the walls.

In addition to house construction, Thai people in the past believed in superstition and magic. Astrologers and monks who have knowledge in magical, astrological and Brahministic beliefs were asked conduct many procedures for house construction such as ceremony for land guardian spirit. They chose an auspicious location and selected an appropriate moving-in time. From the Buddhism religious beliefs, during the first, second, fourth, sixth, ninth and twelfth lunar months will bring happiness and good fortune, while the rest in lunar months are believed to bring suffering and disease.

According to evidence on Dvaravati stone (Buddhism literatural name of stone), first Thai house appears in the 8th century. However, after a period in the second half of the twentieth century, Thai houses were being pulled down many times faster than modern concrete houses and condominiums were being built. Today in Bangkok and its vicinities, they are hard to find. Many Thais do not appreciate them, finding them contrast to modern cities.

From my point of view, they are as precious diamond, which are priceless. They are perfect dwellings that represent Thai culture, architecture, art, religion and so forth.

I really shouldnt talk about this, but then I realize Im an Aries and I thrive on the adrenaline I get from doing things I shouldnt.

They say that if you search hard enough for something it will find you. In the Spring of 15, I met this really wierd woman at a coffeehouse that I hang out at. Now, keep in mind that if I call someone wierd, thats saying something... Well, she asked me if I was a vampire. I said no, and that the fangs were just caps I had made. She dropped the subject. A few months later, in mid-September, 15, I brought her to my college to see the world wide web. At dinner in the schools cafeteria, she mentioned to a friend of mine that she was an immortal vampire. I rolled my eyes. She didnt offer proof, but instead offered to change my friend. Well, to make a long story short, he called me a few days later and showed me the changes. Now, Id been practiced different forms of magick for almost 6 years at the time, and Id never seen such a major change in a persons aura and abilities so fast. He simply wasnt himself. He felt more complete, more powerful, and his psychic shielding was incredible.

He gave me what details he could, but it wasnt enough. I went to this womans house and got the rest of the details from her. She described a ritual to me. The would-be vampire would spiritually marry her (read psychic bonding), die, and be reborn. I have been asked to keep the precise method of death secret, but I can say that no normal human can either kill or die literally from this action. That was plainly obvious. After the rebirth, she injects the fledgling with a purified form of her blood, which she likened to embalming. I figured there was no harm in trying the ritual, and if nothing happened, I could make an excuse not to take the injection. (The reason for the injection was the same as drinking the blood of a vampire, but more reliable.) So, on September 4, 15, I went through with the ritual.

Ive heard of strange things happening in rituals, but this has to take the cake. I died. Literally. I stopped breathing, felt my heart stop and left my body. I later realized (has this happened in any other NDEs?) that I departed to the North. I felt like I entered a tunnel and flew through it. I reached the other side (no bright light, but I did get the feeling of absolute peace. I felt like I was in some kind of waiting room, but it felt blissful, nothing like waiting in a doctors office of anything.). Before I could get my bearing, I was pulled gently, but forcefully back to my body. I hovered just outside it for a few seconds, looking over my own right shoulder before popping back in. I heard her tell me to breathe, and I did. After dying, I had no problem with the injection. Not much can make a dead person nervous, besides, she was more cautious with the sterility of her syringe than most doctors Ive seen.

The effects I experienced were as follows I went through all the changes I described about the viral vampires, my hair got a slight curl to it and became a tad lighter (black to dark brown), and my eyes changed. I cant really describe it, but a few people have noticed a difference. My magickal abilities have gotten stronger, though things dont quite work in the same manner, and my third eye (astral sight) has improved. The lust for blood is just that lust. I felt like an adolescent looking at a porno-magazine.

Feeding is as follows I take vitamin B1 daily, in huge doses, and use various substitutes, including chocolate, fruit juices, etc. When I feed off humans, it seems I grow astral fangs. I can feel them latch onto the victims skin, but other than that, there is no sign of fangs at all. Once I am locked on, I suck. I get a slightly viscous liquid entering my mouth, but it is not whole blood, nor is it saliva. I swallow, and thats it. I let go when Ive had enough. It could be psycho-somatic neurosis, but I have no way of telling for sure. It seems I get a part of blood, perhaps through osmosis. Im not sure. Im not sure of anything really, except that as I said in a post to Vampires-l quite a while ago, pomegranates act like speed to me.

I do not regret my change, but I would like to know what is happening in scientific terms. Any serious researchers out there have a clue?

Jazz, Musical Theatre and Tap

Musical theatre is a genre that has a style of its own. It encompasses music, dance and theatrical acting in its self. In 7 brides for 7 brothers, the movements were like ballet but along a long continuum. They were using movement that were spontaneous and encompassed the movement of acrobats which is a theatrical performance.

In Jazz Hot one could not recognize that is was actually a musical theatre piece. I actually could see the musical theatre in this after it was brought to my attention. It also encompassed music, dance and performance into one. The moves of the performers and the main star which was the mature women brought attention more to the theatrical performance other than waiting for them to perform another dance move.

Tap is a fascinating part of dance within its self. It lies at the other end of the continuum compared to ballet but it also has a style that keeps it within the same procession. In Challenge Dance the movements were like that of ballet in a sense but it didn’t go along with music as many ballets also do. The music seemed to not flow gently but instead it flowed roughly and made the tap look atrocious.

In Tap Dogs the tapping was different than challenge dance because of incorporating different styles of tap. It seemed more fascinating and exhilarating than the other. It still seemed like it had no storyline and the movements were not with the music which made me become unfocused with the tap dance. Although the men had items they were tapping with; it still seemed like sporadic movements.

Jazz dance is an alternative to musical theatre and vise versa which lets both pieces encompass one another. In Contact the music went with the performance and it played a story just like musical theatre had done. When the music is played in sync with the dancing it seems to bring about the styles of the movements and which in turn make the moves transition smoothly and with a bang.

In Center Stage the young adults had movements that seemed to be too much like ballet, though it had swings and movements that went with music. The movements played in tune with the music beats although I couldn’t recognize a story line within this clip. The style was definitely jazz style, recognizing it through the swinging movements that follow he beats of the music.

Out of Jazz, Musical Theatre and Tap I would say I rate tap as not catching my attention and a complete bore to myself. Although I would sit through a performance to see if I actually could benefit from the dance I doubt that anything would come from it. Jazz and Musical Theatre are the two I enjoy the most and I highly doubt that one is better than the other. The two styles seem to be close in style which attracts me to the predilection. I hope that one day, jazz and musical theatre will become to surge my mind and soul and help me become more focused, so I can learn these style myself. I believe these genres are outstanding and feel me with an aesthetic feeling I have never felt before.
