Flannery O?Connor?s literary reputation and critical analysis of her work have been read and studied for many years and continue to grow more popular since her death. Flannery OConnor was born in Savannah, Georgia on March 5, 15 to Catholic parents. O?Connor attended St. Vincents School and Sacred Heart Parochial School. In 18 her father got a position as appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration, and the family moved to North East Atlanta, then Milledgeville. Three years later, he died from complications from the chronic disease lupus. O?Connor attended Georgia State College for Women and State University of Iowa, graduating in 147. In 151, after complaining of a pain in her typing arms, she was diagnosed with the same disease that had killed her father. She went on, with the disease, to write two novels and thirty-two short stories, winning awards and going on tours when her health allowed, but spent most of her time on the family farm, Andalusia, in Milledgeville, with her mother. She died of lupus on August , 164 at the age of thirty-nine. This part of an essay was written by me...i am only trying to registter fast to get what other people are critiquing OConnor about, soI want into this site for info...not to steal it...Hopefully nobody else is trying to steal this because you just might cut and past it without reading it before your teacher does. Shame on you! This has to be 50 words so im going to write a bunch of mumber jumbo. Justin Timberlake is the sexiest man alive and Britney Spears and him need to get back together. My favorite song right now is probably...I dont know there are so many. I miss my friend who has passed on recently. We miss you buddy. Rest in peace. We all love you and will never forget you!! Always thinking of you...k....Smilez and Southstar have a cool song that remind me of him out right now called Now That Youre Gone Its cool and sad. Sherrie Austin also has a cool one out too called Streets of Heaven. Its a tear jercker though.

FLannery OConnor is a marvelous, yet depressing writter. Hopefully this is enough to gain some research so I can finish this paper...

When the British surrendered on 15 February 14, Singapore came under the Japanese rule. The Japanese Occupation was a very bitter period of years and had brought hardship to our people. We lived each day in constant fear of the fresh disasters the day would bring.

My family consisted of my parents, my elder brother, my younger brother and me. We were very close to each other because we wanted to spend time together before anything might happen to one of us, anytime. Once during the mass screening operation the Japanese carried out on all Chinese men between 18 and 50 years old, or Sook Ching, my father and elder brother were ordered to report at a mass-screening center where they were questioned by the Japanese. During their absence, my mother and I prayed for them. Fortunately both of them made a safe trip back home as they were not identified as anti-Japanese.

During the difficult times when there was a serious shortage of food, my family of five struggled to live on a simple diet of tapioca and sweet potatoes, which were food substitutes for scarce food such as rice. It would be tapioca and sweet potatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sometimes, when we had just plain porridge, we were already happy enough because it fed more hungry mouths. We also grew a little of our own food because the Japanese promoted homegrown food and seeds were given away.

When the schools reopened, my younger brother and I attended Bras Basah Boys’ School that was formerly known as St Joseph’s Institution, and was used as a Red Cross Hospital before the surrender of the British. In the school, the students had to maintain a high level of discipline, which came down to singing the Japanese anthem in attention. The Japanese authorities had made changes to the education system, where the teaching of the Japanese language was compulsory.

Brother Michael was one of my teachers whom I respected a lot because he was a very special teacher who cared for us extensively. He would often gave his share of food to students who were very hungry, and console students who had family problems. During lessons, he talked to us about some changes our teachers had to endure. They had to tend vegetable plots in the Botanic Gardens during school hours, and do patrol duties late at night. He also told us that when more teachers were brought in from Japan, his and the other Brothers’ services would no longer be needed eventually, and they would have to move to somewhere else to find a job.

As I was only a young teenager, I was lucky to escape most of the cruel punishments the Japanese soldiers inflicted. However, I was aware of the pain and agony many innocent people experienced. I could only hope that the days of darkness would end and peace would return some day.

Credibility is the key.

When you are choosing a topic for a speech it is clear that you have to choose one that your audience can relate to easily. But that is only the half of it because even if you choose something every single individual in your audience would want to hear about if they don’t consider your information to be factual and your sources as well as your self credible, then all that you will do is waste there time. Credibility is the key to a properly delivered speech. A 1 year old boy couldn’t possibly enter a room filled with seasoned marines on their way to war and be expected to deliver a touching speech to inspire the men to be brave and confident, they most likely would want to hear that from a general or commander in chief who has been in there position before, someone who knows what they are feeling. In the same way it not be a very good idea for a plumber to give a informative speech on air safety to audience consisting Aero Space professionals. Your image can directly affect how well you adapt to your audience, the strongest tool you will have with which you can protect your credibility is your method of delivery.

When giving a speech to an audience you expect might judge your credibility first, it is wise not introduce the facts first, but instead establish grounds for the concreteness for your arguments. After you have given them every reason to find you interesting you can start pouring out the facts; When I was at Munro College I ws asked to deliver a speech to set of six formers about architecture and engineering, I was only in second form at the time and before I was half way through the presentation the mumblying and sarcastic questions prevented me from finishing and even showing them the slides I made. I know what I was doing but I failed to make them agree before started giving the facts; establishing credibility is the first thing anyone should when giving a speech.

In Hey Men, Get Healthy! by Holly McCord, RD (McCord holds a bachelors degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. and a masters degree in nutrition from Immaculata College. She completed her dietetic training at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Bryn Mawr, Penn. ) and Gloria McVeigh (Assistant Nutrition Editor) authors of such other articles as “Way Beyond Low Fat” and “Fast Tips for Savvy Eaters”, the authors challenge Men to improve their diet and lifestyle to prolong their life as well as well as maintain health. Men were “significantly less likely than women to believe that widely recommended changes in diet and lifestyle could actually reduce their risk of disease”(McCord and McVeigh, par.1). Therefore these two ladies set it upon themselves to attempt to educate men on four simple and widely recommended changes to lifestyle that could improve lifespan and reduce risk of disease. These four simple steps of reducing fat intake, eating more fiber, staying fit, and quitting smoking are outlined as important solutions to assisting maintaining a healthier lifestyle. This article is a basic guideline for Men to improve their health with easy methodology that can be substantiated with evidence from many periodicals and research literature.

The first step outlined in the article is the reduction of fat intake in the diet. In the article Dietary Fat - How Much, What Kind There is an outline that presents the results of increased dietary fat including the increase in cholesterol levels which results in atherosclerosis. McVeigh and McCord present an important point that fat in the diet especially in those men that consume 40-45 percent of their diet in fat are highly susceptible to being overweight, developing cancer, and heart disease. In an article entitled 5 WAYS TO FIGHT FIVE BIG HEALTH RISKS the authors concur that the reduction of fat can reduce the risk of Problem Skin, Diabetes, and Cancer. Evidence that eating less Fat can reduce the risk of Heart Disease was found in the article TAKING FOOD TO HEART-six ways to keep your heart healthy that states

Page

We also know that a balance of fats in our diet is whats important, including monounsaturated (like olive oil and nuts) and polyunsaturated (like marine and flax oils) varieties. In fact, by eliminating traditional stick margarine, reducing our consumption of fat-laden fast food and foods labeled with “partially hydrogenated” oils, and by increasing our intake of the good fats (like olive, DHA [marine] and flax oils), well be on our way to a heart-healthy diet.

Help with essay on 4 Ways to Improve Health

These articles all correspond with the McCord’s and McVeigh’s findings of the importance of reduction of fat in improving health and longevity.

The second step stated to improve health is the eating of fiber and it is written in the article that

Since the early 80s a great deal of data has emerged extolling the benefits of a high fiber diet. A Japanese study indicated that eating green and yellow vegetables to be protective against prostate cancer. The Japanese men in the study ate over 50 percent more of these veggies than American men. The researchers made the conjecture the difference in the occurrence of this type of cancer between the two countries may be attributable the difference in green and yellow vegetable intake. These vegetables provide the body with lots of beta carotene.

The high Fiber diet was found to reduce risks of cancer keep the patient regular. In the Articles THE LOWDOWN ON FIBER and Fiber To The Rescue states that increasing fiber in the diet would result in reduction of the absorption of fat. The article Fiber To The Rescue states that “Scientists at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center found that if you up the fiber in your meals to the recommended 0 to 0 grams a day without adding calories, youll absorb less fat.” This is important to show that fiber has benefits such as the reduction of heart disease by reduction of fat intake in the average male. The Lowdown On Fiber is also important in presenting the benefits of fiber stating

Page 4

that “when fiber absorbs water and swells up in the intestines people feel satisfied with fewer calories. Other health bonuses from dietary fiber are a steady blood sugar level, cholesterol regulation and better bowel elimination”. Research also shows that the high fiber in the diet can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer as is shown by research

Dr. Denis Burkitt, a British surgeon who spent 0 years in Africa, is the pioneer of fiber research. While in Uganda, he observed that heart disease and cancer are virtually nonexistent among rural Africans. Those who ate a coarse and fiber-full diet did not suffer, as do Americans, the diseases of constipation, hiatal hernia and varicose veins. The Africans average a total of 5 grams of fiber per day and with this increased bulk their stools have a shorter bowel transit time, approximately 0 hours, instead of the 70 hours or more for the average American. A shorter transit time, as previously explained, means less time for bile wastes to decompose into toxic substances. Bacterial putrefaction is also minimized.

In the article Eleven Healing Foods there is further proof that fiber has healing properties. It states that of these eleven foods six were chosen for their high content in fiber and states that it helps the body rid itself of cholesterol and lowers the risk of heart disease. Overall it is possible to surmise that the evidence and data presented in the article stating that fiber is important to a healthy life.

The next important step presented in improving health is the maintenance of fitness through exercise. The article states that

Regular exercise can fight against heart disease, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, overweight, stress, osteoporosis, constipation, and maybe cancer. The Center for Disease Control likens a totally sedentary lifestyle to the effect on heart disease risk of smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. A further validation of this finding comes from a New Zealand study involving 00 men and women. Fifty-three percent of the heart attacks in the sample subjects could be attributed to a lack of exercise.

Page 5

This evidence cannot be refuted with the wide amount of medical research available. There are numerous articles available to show the benefits of exercise in lowering blood pressure by which a reduction in Hypertension is the result. In the Article 7 Perks of Exercise there are numerous mental and physical benefits to maintaining a exercise regime including the reduction of the risk of Cancer. As the article states

Sustained exercise seems to be a key to cancer prevention. According to a 17 Norwegian study of 5,000 women aged 0 to 54, a significantly smaller risk of developing breast cancer was found among women who regularly engaged in at least four hours a week of physical exercise. Colon cancer also occurs less frequently among people who exercise. Exactly how exercise lowers cancer rates is still unknown, but researchers theorize that it may boost the immune systems ability to detect and kill cancer cells

Also included in the article are benefits such as reduction of osteoporosis, strengthens muscles and bones, provides enjoyment and Any physical activity can help lower blood pressure, but we chose walking because its so easy, says Kerrie L. Moreau, PhD, research associate at the University of Colorado in Boulder. It is evident that physical activity is a key building block to health and fitness.

The final step considered necessary by McCord and McVeigh was cessation of smoking. It was the importance of reducing the hazardous effects of smoking that was the focal point of their argument. In the article The Risks Of Smoking Ellen Brown presents data to that states that “cigarette smoke is made up of over 4,000 chemicals, including 4 known to cause cancer”. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use accounts for 0 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States, and smoking is responsible for 0 percent of lung cancers in men and more then 70 percent in women. These statistics alone show that quitting smoking is important in reduction of life threatening cancer. In the article Are Some Risks of Smoking More Potent than Others? it is stated that the primary cause of death among smokers was not lung cancer but heart disease because “smoking is a significant cause of the clogging of cardiac blood vessels”. It can be concluded that not only is there evidence to be in agreement with McCord and McVeigh’s stipulation that smoking is a primary health concern but it is especially a threat for Men causing 0 percent of deaths due to lung cancer.

Page 6

In conclusion McVeigh and McCord have presented in their article Hey Men, Get Healthy! many important and viable methods for Men to improve their health. Their arguments were basic and considered fundamental in the area of health and evidence gathered did not refute their arguments. Their four steps to better health of reducing fat intake, eating more fiber, staying fit, and quitting smoking are vital and simple solutions to reduce the risk of such problems as hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. Their research in improving longevity for men can be backed up by various scientific studies and articles. It is in my opinion that this is a good article to read for men to improve quality of life for years to come.

Some pre-veterinarian students have known that they would become veterinarians since they held their first stuffed animal. Others have had a single catalytic event that changed their career goals forever. The origins of my own desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine have been less dramatic, but equally as influential. As a child, when someone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up I answered with an array of possibilities including doctor, physical therapist, lawyer (only because my dad is one), and of course veterinarian. To me, becoming a veterinarian meant saving animals, and helping their owners through some very difficult times. Most people recognize the joy and solace they feel when they are around animals, especially their own. To enter a profession in which I could help animals live a happy and healthy life would allow me to make a difference, not only in a person’s life, but in an innocent animal’s life as well.

As I grew older I experienced the difference animals and pets made in my life. When I was upset about something I could always depend on Katy, our family dog to be there and let me hug her and talk to her. She never did mind. This always made me feel better. At the age of nine I began riding horses which allowed me to gain knowledge and confidence in a new way. When I went out to the stables every weekend, I was always ready to learn and have fun for a few hours. The experience I had at Silver Mist Stables taught me that at the age of ten I could take care of a huge horse all by myself, and as long as I was willing, Duke, the nineteen year old horse I leased, would take care of me. This experienced helped shape me into becoming a strong independent individual. In the arena I was in charge of how well Duke and I performed, and the sensation of achieving the goals I had set forth gave me the motivation to expect excellence of myself in all aspects of my life.

While I acknowledge my complete love of animals, I became fascinated with the field of medicine. I took a great interest in my science classes in high school and decided that majoring in a field of science in college would be most intriguing to me. As a senior in high school I realized that I could combine my interest in science, my need to be on my own, and my love of the vast wilderness by attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. I declared my major in Kinesiology and Systemic Physiology because I felt this field would allow me to apply the knowledge learned in foundational science classes to the human body. At this point, I was still leaning towards becoming a physician. At this time I began to realize that California was my true home, and despite the magnificence of Colorado, I longed for the familiarity of California.

In February of 001 I made a decision to transfer to UC Davis. Though I did not know it at the time this decision would have a lasting impact on my career choice. During my first quarter at Davis, despite my rigorous academic schedule, I decided to try something new and volunteer at the Davis Animal Hospital, a local small animal clinic. For three months I went to the clinic on Tuesday mornings and assisted the doctors and technicians in routine procedures including cleaning kennels, walking the dogs, drawing blood samples and even observing minor surgical procedures. The time I spent there allowed me to see the other side of a veterinary clinic. I had always been on the other side, and this new experience was intriguing to me. From this point my childhood interests in becoming a veterinarian were reignited.

Do my essay on personal statement vet school CHEAP !

Although I enjoyed the quarter I spent at the small animal clinic, I was not sure that the small animal clinic was an area I wanted to pursue a career in. Over that Christmas vacation I rode along with an ambulatory veterinarian in Chico. That first day I spent with her I was able to experience a side of veterinary medicine I had not yet discovered. We went to several different ranches and boarding facilities and did everything from giving routine vaccinations to hock injections on an arthritic thoroughbred. Dr. Heather Smith introduced me to a whole new field that sparked a fire in me that still burns today. After the time I spent with Dr. Smith, I returned to Davis and immediately dove into volunteering at the Large Animal ICU at the UC Davis veterinary teaching hospital. After two quarters, I was still infatuated and submitted an application for employment. At the present time I am working as a Large Animal ICU/ISO technician, completing my research project on dendritic cell concentrations in neonatal foals, and spending any free time I have in Chico with Dr. Smith.

By taking the opportunity to ride along with Dr. Baker I was able to solidify all of my aspirations into a career goal that is well suited for me. I feel that UC Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine is the right place for me to enter the profession. Through working at the Large Animal ICU I have had the opportunity to meet many clinicians, residents, staff and students; I would feel privileged if I were accepted as a student at the University Of California Davis School Of Veterinary Medicine.

My Broken Top Trek July 00

The hike began in a moderate vein through the ripe green meadow grasses celebrated with midget bug wings rising a full 11 inches with every footfall. The errant Rudi, a toy poodle, is in tow verses tug, his enthrall rising at the twine of a scent. This dog’s nose knows no moderation, the greedy channels locked in full flood of sensory scintillation. Toes tingling with enthusiasm, his whiff-and-pee repeats endlessly.

Passing along the lake, placid now, beckoning the feet with its clear call of cool, this will be missed in the extreme soon, but onward, and indeed upward, for when we find the trail it absolutely soars.

I reach for my truest gear, thinking of the workouts at the “Y”, treading in earnest, thirty minutes to the stretch, two miles logged, 400 calories burned. Hunkering into the aerobic gait, the first mile is arduous, breathing with intent, comfort in complete abeyance. Tam Mc Arthur Rim had a formidable look from the lake, but this indirect end walk promises to surmount the obstacle, and what’s a bit of optimism for?

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on My Broken Top Trek

The first plateau is a confidence builder, kind of a walking respite, leg strokes powering, breath taut, but no problem. The next gradients are taken with confidence, slowing to be sure, but glimpsing now and then the promise of the Sisters.

I achieve a vantage point that overlooks the lake, and reveals the famous peaks of the Oregon Cascades, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack, Mt Washington, and to the distant north, Mt Adams in Washington.

The onward trail will now not be denied me. I am pumped and my legs will enjoy no sympathy. Upward is the answered call to anticipated vistas supreme.

At its top, the scale of Tam Mc Arthur Rim is beyond anticipation. The scoop of the abyss opening before me is more than I can stomach, and I retreat sheepishly from the edge. Intrepid Rudi, sure footed with four, and closer to the ground, is intolerably venturesome. I call him back from the brink, unable to quell the imagined power of the void (these thrills are not cheap; I worked hard to get here)!

The Sisters, now in full panorama, are a quiet majestic thrill. They are truly sisters, for they are one conjoined prominence, with three very distinct points in the sky, 10,044’, 10,085’, and 10,50’ for South Sister. I can’t believe I didn’t bring a camera.

It is Broken Top, however, which commands my most fervent interest. Viewed distantly for many years from Davis Lake to the south, it holds the highest degree in my esteem for these citadels of the Cascades. It is Broken Top as much as anything else that has called me forth on this long summer weekend, far from the world of work in the distant Rogue Valley. For long minutes I simply breath in and feed.

At this incredible vantage point I must declare a summit. I am so close to Broken Top, and Broken Hand, a new acquaintance, that to venture closer would afford me a lesser view. That, and my energy is totally spent.

The descent is a welcome gradient, but what took four hours to ascend must surely take two to descend, and the bones that thrust my body to these heights, are starting to complain. And now it is the unholy grail of gin and tonic that becomes the dualism of my quest. I can think of nothing better.

I watch the landmarks of my climb fall dutifully behind me as I observe the reserves of my energy dwindle to the straits of dire. I glimpse the lake finally, alarmingly far below. The brakes of my haunches are tellingly deplete. I look for the place in my mind that knows it will prevail, but its confidence is meager.

The lake comes in and out of view, reluctantly closer, as the trial winds on interminably. It is increasingly hot as I finally gain the road below and settle into the final leg of my return to camp.

As Rudi, the dog of the hour, drinks deep and long from the crystal quench of the lake, I celebrate his out-door doggedness. He has made the grade. Not a whimper passed his fuzzy little lips.

My own quench comes back at camp as the alchemy and fluid dynamics of G&T come together over ice to provide the only bliss I want. The folding camp chair, the lovely shade, a trickle of breeze, and my bones come to rest.

History assessment task

The Easter 116 Irish revolution

An important and bloody piece in the history of Irish and their struggle for a republic was the Easter revolution of 116, which was led by a group of Irish revolutionaries which were determined to release Northern Ireland from British colonial rule and end the conflict between these two enemies.

Background to the revolution

Cheap College Papers on Irish revolution/uprising - Easter 1916

Before the story of the revolution is told, it is important to give a background to the conflict in Ireland and the events leading up to the Easter 116 revolution.

The history of the conflict goes back to 116, nearly 750 years before the Easter 116 revolution, when English troops landed in Northern Ireland, over the next half millennium the English attempted to colonise the island, this often sparked rebellions by the Irish.

During the 16th century, the English gradually expanded the reach over the island, also during this time, the Protestant English, incited religious persecution over the Catholic Irish. The Irish Catholics suffered greatly during this period of British rule.

Over the next few centuries tensions between the English an Irish grew to breaking point.

In 1800, an act of parliament was passed which joined England and Ireland as one. During the 1th and 0th century, groups of opponents to British rule began to spring up. These groups brought about several uprisings. They also pushed for the implementation of Home rule, an act enabling Ireland to govern its domestic affairs, which was rejected many times in British parliament.

Planning for the revolution

Plans for the Easter 116 revolution began after the breakout of the World War One when the supreme council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood called together leaders of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen army. The supreme council proposed an uprising in Dublin to take advantage of the war between Britain and Germany and to obtain Artillery and ammunition from the Germans through Roger Casement, who had contacts with the German Embassy in New York. All parties agreed to the plan, except for Eoin Macneill, a leader of the Irish volunteers who strongly opposed the uprising on grounds of principle. It was decided in secret that the plans for the uprising would go ahead without the knowledge of Eoin Macneill.

In January 116, the supreme council set a date for the uprising of rd of April 116, but complications arose such as British Intelligence intercepting messages between the rebels and the German Embassy in New York regarding a shipment of Arms and ammunition bound for the rebels. This caused the German cargo ship, Aud, carrying the Artillery and ammunition, to be captured by the British navy off the coast of Ireland. Full knowledge of this sensitive information was not passed onto Dublin authorities. Leaving the authorities unaware of any such uprising.

The Revolution begins

In spite of the setbacks to the uprising, the Easter 116 revolution

began shortly after midday on Monday 4th of April 116, in Dublin, when 00 members of the Irish citizen army and 1500 members of the Irish volunteers met at Liberty Hall, Dublin, to begin an uprising against British power. At 1.04pm, 150 rebels walked down Sackville Street towards their main target, Dublins General Post Office. From here, seven of the rebels proclaimed an Irish republic and the creation of a provisional government with Patrick Pearse as president. Other rebels controlled several other significant buildings in the city centre and in greater Dublin.

On Tuesday 5th the rebels provisional government proclaimed Martial Law throughout Ireland, an additional 500 rebels came to Dublin to help with the uprising along with heavy artillery from Curragh, 56 kilometres outside Dublin.

Also on this day, the British began the task of regaining control of the city by setting up several barriers around Dublin to trap the rebels, particularly around the GPO and the countryside, so no new rebel enforcements could enter Dublin. By Tuesday evening, the rebels steadily began to retreat in the face of fierce street fighting between the rebels and the British who greatly outnumbered the rebels both in men and firepower. In the evening the city was in complete chaos, with many homes and business were destroyed by fire, the British unsure of who was a rebel or not, fired indiscriminately at any male civilian within their rights.

By Wednesday 6th, the tides began to turn greatly against the rebels. A gunboat called Helga, made its way down the River Liffey, destroying many rebel positions such as Liberty Hall and Bolands Mill. By late afternoon on Wednesday, the British infantry and artillery regiments continued street fighting, the rebels began to crumble, by the evening, one group of rebels had surrendered the Mendicity institution. But several rebel groups fought on, at Mount street bridge, 1 rebels held off 400 British reinforcements, causing 00 British casualties.

Throughout the rest of the week, the Irish fought on, in spite of the rebels crumbling hold on Dublin as the British advanced closer to the rebels strongholds. The rebels situation was desperate, 10 000 more British reinforcements had arrived from London on the morning of Thursday 7th, Sackville street was on fire and was engulfing the buildings next to the GPO. By Thursday evening, the oil works opposite the GPO caught fire, the rebels had no choice but to evacuate.

On Friday 8th the British had advanced to within a few blocks

Of the GPO, the rebels were beginning to evacuate from the GPO to their new head quarters in 16 Moore Street, whilst under the constant gunfire of the British, it was during the evacuation that James Connolly was severely injured in the ankle and chest.

The End is Nigh

Saturday th of April, 40 percent of the city centre had been destroyed, the British were only a street away from their new headquarters. Patrick Pearce realised the futility of further resistance and sent a message to the British Commander, requesting a meeting to discuss the terms and conditions for a surrender, but the commander would only allow a unconditional surrender. Pearce, to weak to have any objections, handed over his sword as a formal symbol of surrender, then composed a formal surrender at army headquarters to be circulated amongst the remaining rebel outposts, most rebels surrendered, but some continued fighting until a complete surrender in the early evening.

The uprising had lasted only 6 days, caused 440 British and 75 Irish deaths and destroyed about 00 buildings in Dublin.

The Punishment is dealt

On May , the British brought the leaders of the uprising to different trials before a field court-martial. Fifteen of the leaders including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly (by his hospital bedside) were sentenced to death by firing squad, except for Roger Casement, who was hanged for treason. Five of the executions took place on 10th May 116 while the other ten were executed on 1th of April 116, all executions took place at Kilmainham Jail. Four other rebels were sentenced to death but were commuted to life Imprisonment. Two of the rebel leaders were given amnesty one year later.

The Aftermath

A dramatic increase in support for an Irish republic grew after the 116 Easter uprising, in 118, the Sinn Fein, an extremist political party, won 76 of the 106 seats allotted to Ireland in British party.

In 11, the Sinn Fein party established a separate parliament in Dublin called the Dail Eireann, which was Gaelic for Assembly of Ireland. The newly formed party proclaimed Ireland as a republic, had its own constitution and leader, Eamon de Valera.

British troops were sent to Dublin to suppress the group, this cause a three-year Irish revolution, which involved much Guerilla warfare in the streets of Dublin. The revolution ended in late 11 when the British government offered to instate the Ireland Act of 11, which allowed to states too be created, Ireland and Northern Ireland (Ulster), each run by its own government under the loose control of Britain.

In late 1, the Anglo-Irish treaty was bought before the Dail, who held there parliament in Dublin, if the treaty were to get the vote in the Dail, Ireland (which did not include Northern Ireland) would become a dominion of the United Kingdom Known as the Irish Free State. The Irish Free State would be self-governing but would still acknowledge allegiance to Britain. The treaty narrowly passed in the Dail. De Valera resigned as president weeks before the vote, rather than take the oath of allegiance to Britian.

In 17, De Valera formed the Fianna Fail, which was Gaelic for Soldiers of destiny. The Fianna Fail won the election of 1, which made De Valera Leader of the Irish Free State. In 17, De Valera pushed through a new constitution and changed the countries name to Eire.

On Easter Monday, April 18, 14, by the terms of the New Ireland Act of 14,the Eire became a republic, free of the British, although Northern Ireland was to remain part of the United Kingdom.

Throughout the next 50 years, Northern Ireland would see riots and violence would continue between Catholics and Protestants due to discrimination and hatred. Violence would also break out between Irish extremists and British troops.

Throughout the 160s Catholics held many civil rights marches due to discrimination from the government over the welfare plan. During the 180s Hunger strikes were held due to the treatment of the Irish by the British.

Currently Northern Ireland is still under the control of Britain.

You cannot conquer Ireland. You cannot extinguish the Irish passion for freedom!

The Pilot

Setting several gigantic meteors with large green blotches slightly swirl, floating weightlessly around a ravioli-shaped, iron-colored space ship. They fly effortlessly towards an unsuspecting earth, passing the gray, blank moon along the way. I watched as the meteors passed through this virtual space, the colors vivid and beautiful…I felt as if I was, perhaps, clinging onto one of the kryptonite-infested meteor rocks, along for the suspense ride of that space ship. This scene was very well done. I must say, it was probably one of the best scenes in Smallville so far, as far as the special effects go. The graphics weren’t corny as quite a few have been throughout the two entire seasons of Smallville, they were actually very realistic. I particularly liked the shots of the meteors brushing the top of the moon when they were beginning to near earth.

After the brief interlude with the meteors, we see a helicopter hovering unusually low to a row of cornfields below. The scene then cuts inside the helicopter, where we first meet Lionel Luthor (John Glover) looking over a newspaper. He brings his eyes to a red-haired little boy, eyes clenched and panicking. This is the young version of Lex Luthor ( Matthew Munn), the future billionaire bald boy. These few scenes were handled very well by both John Glover and Mathew, it really introduced us into the “Luthor world”, and gave us an idea what went on in Lex’s childhood.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Pilot Review

Over the next ten minutes, we meet the characters Martha and Jonathan Kent (Annette O’Toole,John Schneider) and Nell Potter (Sarah-Jane Redmond) and young Lana Lang (Jade Unterman). All handle they’re portrayals well, yet I still cant help but thinking Sarah over-acted a little.

The next major scene I think I am obligated to discuss, was when the meteor showers reached the town of Smallville. When the meteor hit, it looked rather real. The effects for it were plausible. The scenes in which our young Lex confronts the meteors was wonderfully portrayed. The young Mathew Munn is quite a good actor for such a young age. I enjoyed the suspense of the scene.

Then we clip to the next major scene. A complete joke in my opinion. Lana’s parents sit outside there car. They wave to the young Lana ..when suddenly a gigantic meteor comes hurling at them! They don’t even try to escape it. They just stand there. How believable is that? It’s human instinct to run away or dodge an item haling towards you! You don’t just stand there, cringing, waiting for the hunk of rock to join you with the pavement! I thought the graphics in this scene weren’t very well done either. Lana’s parents look like little card board cut outs when the meteor hits them…. Although the car explosion was intriguing, that scene could have been done better accounting that this is a major part of the show.

The film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ uses cinematic features and film techniques in the establishing shot and opening sequence of the film, to portray character and develop certain effects within the film.

The opening sequence of the film focuses on introducing one of the main characters in the film, Andy Dufesne. Andy is a banker, suffering from a mid-life crisis, who finds out that his wife is having an affair. Within this sequence, we find that Andy is convicted for the murder of both his wife and her lover, and that he is sentenced to undertake two life sentences at the Shawshank Redemption prison. It is important that the opening sequence involves a very somber tone. This effect is promoted with the use of both cinematic features and film techniques.

The mise en scene plays a vital part in creating effect to its audience as it refers to all that appears within the camera’s shot, including lighting, color, setting and camera movements. At the scene of the crime, we find that Andy’s face is hidden in shadow. This symbolizes his extreme anger, but also his inability to show emotion. Andy has been hiding from his true feelings his whole life and it is only whilst being within Shawshank that he learns to express his love for others. The non-diagetic music used helps create mood. The song, ‘If I Didn’t Care’ is played during the sequence. The slow rhythm and lagging voice of it’s composer, along with the deep, drawn out bass adds to the feeling that the crime scene is a place of great sadness. The establishing sequence uses the color blue to add meaning in the way that it expresses death and murder. Therefore, it shows how Andy’s anger and jealousy has led him to the point of wanting to kill. This creates a mysterious character to the audience, but also builds suspense, as the audience ask themselves, ‘will he or won’t he?’ The use of this flashback of the crime scene within the narrative structure of the sequence helps to produce a story and piece bits of the plot together. It also creates a definite juxtapose between itself and the courtroom from which Andy is given his sentence. This juxtaposition shows to the audience how Andy has been convicted of a crime he didn’t do. We also realize the juxtaposition between Andy and his wife making love, as we notice the difference in color of the two scenarios. The bright, red and yellow of the bedroom furniture, expressing passion, to the solemn blue of the background within the car, expressing the sheer depression of the character. The lighting used in the sequence shapes mood and develops Andy’s secretive character to the audience. Within the establishing sequence, we only witness natural light upon Andy’s face, which gives light shadowing, creating a flat image of the character.. The camera work within this sequence helps convey meaning and shapes character also. The low shot of the judge within the courtroom shows his power over Andy and highlights the extreme responsibility the judge has to change a man’s life completely. The various close-up shots of the gun and the whisky bottle symbolize the state of Andy’s life. His situation has lead him to depression, drinking, but most shamefully, the need for revenge. Voice over is used to build character and explain the events which lead to Andy’s conviction. The non-diagetic sounds used within the sequence help to enhance realism, for example the sound of the revolver bullets as they hit the ground. The realism makes the audience feel as if they were there, in the screen with Andy, and so builds much suspense. The cut shots to the courtroom provide a great sense of urgency and help build suspense until Andy is told the length of his sentence. When the judge dismisses the case and the hammer is struck upon the table, a reverberating, eerie sound is produced, followed by silence and a fade to black. This tells the audience that something has ended and in this case, it is the end of Andy’s normal, everyday life. A new life of institutionalism and discipline is to follow. The sequence ends as the screen suddenly fades to black, conveying the depressing, repetitive way of life to follow.

Both cinematic features and film techniques have been used in the opening sequence of the film to develop a character and bring effect upon its audience. The way in which characters are portrayed affects the film to a great extent. At the start of this film, Andy is shown to be a dis-passionate man who has lived in comfort. Throughout The Shawshank Redemption, it is his journey to express his emotions, build up his courage and withstand the ultimate battle between mind and authority in order to gain back the freedom took from him

When I first started reading To kill a Mockingbird by the great Harper Lee I wasnt very interested. It was very boring at first I noticed. But as I kept on reading, I realized that she was a very successful writer after all because, she made me feel I was in the very story.

This novel happened to take place in Maycomb County, Alabama around the the time of the Great Depression. No one had any money, or more or less, have anything to do except sleep.

The story was being narrated by the main character of this story whose name was Jean Louise Finch; but her father, Atticus, and her brother, Jem, called her Scout. The whole story was basically being told from her point of view of things. Honestly, the reader can visualize very clearly what Maycomb was like through her eyes.

In this story, little Scout leads us to many conclusions about racism and descrimination for blacks at the time. She also describes how hipocritcal impotent people were such as in the scene where little Scout was drinking tea with the missionary ladies.

Buy cheap To Kill A Mockingbird term paper

She heard them feel sorry for people who lived in another continent without realizing that instead of helping others and feeling bad for others in another continent, they should have worried about the southern blacks here in their backyard who lived in far more excruiating conditions.

This story brings a concise thought to the reader about not judging people for what they are, but for who they are.

Harper Lee wrote this novel with intense passion. No doubt in mind that Harper Lee is a very astonishing writer.

Is Your Mouse Playing Up?

Erratic movements of your cursor on the screen are an indication that your mouse needs a clean. Unless you use an optical mouse, of course. Turn your mouse upside down and unscrew the ring holding the ball inside. Carefully roll the ball out and give it a wipe with a clean duster. There are two or three rollers inside that you should check. They may be clogged up with grime picked up by the mouse ball over the months. The best way to clean them is by taking a matchstick or plastic pen top and scraping them to remove any deposits. Blow clean and replace the ball and ring.

Defragging With Ease

So many people have problems with defragmenting their hard drive that many tend not to carry out this important housekeeping measure.

Why is it important? Because when you save data or download software to your hard drive, it is stored in whatever locations are most convenient at the time.

So everything becomes fragmented - stored in bits and pieces all over your hard drive. This means they take longer to access, and your PC appears to slow down.

Defragmenting means that all files and folders are organised so that their data, including software and programs, is moved if necessary so that its all in one place on your hard drive, thereby reducing seek time and speeding things up.

But often, when defrag hits around 10 per cent done it stops and starts again from zero. The whole process can take hours if something isnt done about it.

The problem is usually caused by anti-virus software running in the background, or a screen-saver cutting in.

You can temporarily disable both, but an easier way is to simply shut down and re-boot in Safe Mode. You should then be able to run defrag without any problems right the way through.

4. If you want a lawyer but cannot afford one, one will be provided to you without cost.

5. Do you understand each of these rights I have explained to you?

6. Now that I have advised you of your rights, are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?

Everyone is familiar with this statement in one form or another. Whether it was seen on television or used on you directly this statement has become an essential part of a term we call Due Process of Law. Its name is the Miranda Warnings taken from the case of Miranda v. Arizona. It is interesting how such a statement can be overlooked time and time again. One never really takes into account what this statement means and why police authorities have to use it. In this essay I will explain its origin and what it has meant to the United States since its inclusion at times of arrest.

Before I decipher each statement let me shed some light on where is came from. Ernesto Miranda was a poor Mexican immigrant who in 16 was arrested on kidnapping and rape charges. The defendant (Ernesto Miranda) was identified in a police lineup, was then questioned, and his confession was used at trial. After this he was convicted to 60 years in prison. The defendant appealed this decision to the Supreme Court of Arizona on the basis that he was not given due process of the law because the police never read him his Fifth Amendment rights, which are his right to counsel, and his right not to incriminate himself. The Arizona Supreme Court of Arizona upheld the ruling of the lower court. This was done even though Miranda’s attorney argued that that his confession should not have been used in his trial because Miranda had not been informed of his rights, and no attorney had been present to assist him during his interrogation. Taking it one step further Miranda then appealed his case to the Supreme Court of the United States and on June 1, 166. The Supreme Court after reviewing all the facts decided to reverse the Arizona court’s conviction of Ernesto Miranda on kidnapping and rape charges agreeing that the defendant did not receive the due process of the law. Specifically it was noted that since his Fifth Amendment right was taken away from him by the Arizona police, “...if an accused is not already informed of his rights, or did not understand them, a confession is inadmissible. Now this decision has not only changed the rules and regulations in Arizona alone, but has changed society on a much larger scale as well.

Now that we have some information on how the Miranda Warnings came into affect lets look at what they actually mean form the courts point of view. These statements and questions were implemented to ensure that every defendant is given due process of the law and it was also a way to ensure that Miranda v. Arizona will not occur again. Here are the reasons behind each statement as seen by the court of law. When it comes to the right to remain silent the court states that, “the warning of the right to remain silent must be accompanied by the explanation that anything said can and will be used against the individual in court. This warning is needed in order to make him aware not only of the privilege, but also of the consequences of forgoing it. . . . [T]his warning may serve to make the individual more acutely aware that he is faced with a phase of the adversary system-that he is not in the presence of persons acting solely in his interests. . . .” The right to have an attorney present is described by the court as, “If an individual indicates that he wishes the assistance of counsel before any interrogation occurs, the authorities cannot rationally ignore or deny his request on the basis that the individual does not have or cannot afford a retained attorney . . .. The privilege against self-incrimination secured by the Constitution applies to all individuals. The need for counsel in order to protect the privilege exists for the indigent as well as the affluent. . . .” Going further into detail on the issue of interrogation the courts states, “. . . [W]e hold that an individual held for interrogation must be clearly informed that he has the right to consult with a lawyer and to have the lawyer with him during interrogation under the system for protecting the privilege today. . . . No amount of circumstantial evidence that the person may have been aware of this right will suffice to stand in its stead Only through such a warning is there ascertainable assurance that the accused was aware of this right.” Now in a summation of the whole statement we see, “The principles announced today deal with the protection which must be given to the privilege against self-incrimination when the individual is first subjected to police interrogation while in custody at the station or otherwise deprived of his freedom of action in any significant way. It is at this point that our adversary system of criminal proceedings commences, distinguishing itself at the outset from the inquisitorial system recognized in some countries. Under the system of warnings we delineate today or under any other system which may be devised and found effective, the safeguards to be erected about the privilege must come into play at this point. . . .” Now the Court specifically broke down each line of the warning further to show the importance of why they were used. This was outlined not only to help the arresting officer understand how important it is to say at the time of arrest but also to the suspect to ensure that they are treated fairly.

Now the case itself was not so easily decided. Actually it was split, and in the final ruling was 5 to 4 in favor of the defendant. As with all big cases judges make statement regarding the opinions of the decision, I will take a look at the dissenting opinion and to see why these judges felt different from the majority. In the dissenting opinion the Justices stated that the court’s ruling “represents poor constitutional law and entails harmful consequences for the country at large. How serious these consequences may prove to be only time can tell. But the basic flaws in the Courts justification seem to me readily apparent now once all sides of the problem are considered. . . .” They also speak about the Miranda warnings, “the new rules are not designed to guard against police brutality or other unmistakably banned forms of coercion. Those who use third-degree tactics and deny them in court are equally able and destined to lie as skillfully about warnings and waivers. Rather, the thrust of the new rules is to negate all pressures, to reinforce the nervous or ignorant suspect, and ultimately to discourage any confession at all. The aim in short is toward voluntariness in a utopian sense, or to view it from a different angle, voluntariness with a vengeance. . . .” The dissenting opinion of the Court rested more on the nature of the crime committed, unlike the majority opinion of the court that rested their decision more on legal procedure, “Yet the resulting confessions, and the responsible course of police practice they represent, are to be sacrificed to the Courts own finespun conception of fairness.” Here we see that the dissenting judges were looking at the case not from the perspective of a criminal act that was committed by authorities by not reading Miranda his rights, but from the perspective that when all is said and done the actual factor is that he was accused of kidnapping and rape which is what should have been looked at. Now they go on to say that by looking at it in the legal aspect and not by the actual crime a great injustice was done to society one a whole.

Now the Miranda v. Arizona case went on to be the leading case that other cases tried to rest itself on. Two notable cases were Harris v. New York (171) in which Harris was arrested for selling heroin to an undercover police officer and was not given his Miranda warnings when he told the police that he did sell heroin to the undercover officer. Therefore the statement was not used at his trial but when he took the stand the defendant contradicted what he said previously. The Supreme Court ruled that the Miranda doctrine could not be “perverted into a license to use perjury by way of a defense, free from the risk of confrontation with prior inconsistent utterances.” And Michigan v. Tucker where the defendant was warned of his right to remain silent but not of his right to an attorney. In the defendant’s statement he identified someone as a potential witness and when the case went to trial the defense attorney argued that the witness could not testify because it was “derivative evidence that came out of the defendant’s statement. The Supreme Court ruled that the defendant could testify because the defendant was warned of his right against self-discrimination. Both of these cases tried in some way or another to state that portions of the Miranda Warnings were not stated and used so there the defendants should not be tried for their crimes, but as we see its not as easy as that to get off.

In conclusion Miranda v. Arizona was one the biggest cases to change the way society fucntions. Its is right up there with Brown v. Board of Education, Rowe v. Wade, and Plessy v. Ferguson. All have shaped society to make it what it is today. On a personal note, being an Afro-Caribbena man from the inner city I wish all people would study cases such as these it would help the countless number of people being incarcerated each day. If they would just be informed it could actually save their life. After all aren’t we all in pursuit for LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE AMERICAN DREAM.

In the essay, Notes of a Native Son, James Baldwin reluctantly attends his fathers funeral. When he is led up to the casket to view his father, he realizes his own mortality and the sad truth of the world around him.

He was simply an old man dead, and it was hard to believe that he had ever given anyone joy or pain. Yet, his life filled that room. Further up the avenue his wife was holding his newborn child. Life and death so close together, and love and hatred, and right and wrong, said something to me which I did not want to hear concerning man, concerning life. (Baldwin, 65)

Baldwins bitter realizationfor everything good, there is badpaints a bleak, but realistic picture of our existence as human beings. Baldwins perception of life and death so close together (Baldwin, 65) brings me back to an event in my past, where this irony presented itself clearly to me.

It was October th, 001 and my best friend, Kristas, health was diminishing more and more with every passing hour. She had been activated on the waiting list for a kidney/pancreas transplant over a year ago and the call had not come yet. Her kidneys were failing at a rapid rate and the only choice feasible was to start dialysis the next day. Since the age of four, she had been battling health issueseverything from stomach problems, gastroparesis, to eye problems, her retinas detachingdue to the diabetes. She never let her illness get her down. She fought it every step of the way. A stranger on the street would never know she was sick unless she told them, and even then, she played it off as if it was, as she would say, no big deal. I always admired her incredible strength and determined attitude. Dialysis was a different story though; Krista knew she could not fight this one. She would have to be hooked up to a machine to surviveuntil her organs came.

That night, I saw a beautiful, vivacious and strong thirty-year-old woman turn into a frightened little girl. Her attitude was always upbeat and positive, but that night her voice was trembling, filling the phone with sadness and despair. Why wont they call me? she pleaded. I have been waiting over a year for the hospital to call and say, ‘Hello Krista. This is the nurse from UCSF. We have organs for you, please come to the hospital as soon as possible’!” Finally she proclaimed, “I can’t do it anymore; I have no more to give!” I could sense desperation in her voice. All I wanted to do was find the right words to comfort her and give her hope. I was her best friend scrambling for the right words to say. The only words I could strum up entailed, “It’s going to be okay.” and “You will be getting a call any day! You just have to be patient!”

The fact was I didn’t know if she was going to be “okay”. I was just as impatient as she was to get the call. How can I give someonelet alone my best friendhope when I didn’t understand what I was hoping for! In order to save Krista, someone would have to lose his or her life, plain and simple. We had many morbid conversations trying to plan the timeframe of when the call would come. Every holiday weekend we would look at the statistics of accident-related deaths and predict that that was the weekend she would get called. Neither she nor I wished for someone to die, but if it had to happen, we prayed it would happen soon, so she could be saved. I would always wish her well on those particular weekends, with a simple gesture, “Have a great weekend. Give me a call if anyone dies.” This statement was not meant as a cruel joke, but more as an acknowledgement of a terrifying reality that awaited her.

Krista and I talked on the phone for another hour or so. The conversation mainly consisted of her expressing her fear and frustration of the situation. I was there to listen, which was what she needed the most. This was the first time I truly felt her pain and anguish. I had always been afraid of her disease and was reluctant to face the truth of her illness. If a donor didn’t appear soon, she could very well die. I am positive I will never truly understand the extent of emotions she felt, but if I was ever to grasp a tiny portion of that intensity, I felt it that night. I felt desperate and helpless.

The next morning was brisk and inviting. One more day until Halloween and I still had no idea what my costume was going to be. As I washed the night off in the shower, I recalled my cellular phone ringing quite early in the morning while I was still engaged in a deep sleep. It wasn’t abnormal for my cell phone to ring at such an odd hour. My boyfriend and I had broken up a few weeks prior, but he would still call at random times of the day to talk. This morning was different. Normally, I would ignore any messages until I got to work, but for some reason I decided to check them. The message I heard was more overwhelming than words can describe. “Hi Jamie,” I could hear Krista’s voice, soft as a mouse, calmly begin to speak, “I am heading to UCSF. I got the call. Please call me soon, I am so scared.” Even though we had practiced over and over again what she would say when she called me, nothing could prepare me for the moment I actually received that call. Adrenaline pumped through my body. It was hard to believe that such a phenomenal miracle could happen the morning after a night filled with so much despair and doubt. I listened to the message one more time just to make sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. It was true, I heard correctly. Someone died and my friend would receive the organs she needed; her life would be saved. I must say, that thought brought about the most frightening and elating feelingsall at the same time.

I anxiously called her back, only to speak with her briefly. I needed to tell her everything I wanted to tell her, just in case something was to happen. What do you say when someone you love is heading off to get a kidney/pancreas transplant? I sat there crying on the phone. “I can’t believe this is happening!” is all I could spout out. “I love you and I know you will be okay. I am so proud of you!” Although my words were simple and few, she knew what I meant. She knew how much I loved her and she knew I was right by her side, whether it was physically or spiritually. The next twenty hours were painful and grueling.

Halloween day was like no other day I could possibly remember. I received a call from Krista’s cousin explaining that Krista was in intensive care and that the surgery was a complete success. All my anxiety was lifted and I was able to breathe again. Leave it to Krista to be the first pancreas/kidney transplanteverto be completed in less than seven hours, with no complications. Furthermore, she was out of the hospital in less than a week after her surgery. The approximate expected time for recovery in the hospital was two weeks…she was out in five days! I never expected any less from her, but at the same time, Krista will never know how petrified I was for her.

It has almost been two years since Krista’s transplant. She is more beautiful and outgoing than ever. I cannot say she has traveled an easy road, but I can say there is no one in this world I admire more than her. I am thankful every moment of the day for the donor who saved my friend’s life. It is truly a shame that someone had to lose his or her life to save my dearest friend. It is a shame, but a blessing at the same time. Since the transplant, Krista was fortunate to be able to contact the donor’s family and develop a relationship with them. She received the opportunity to experience and know her donor, Donioas a personthrough his family’s eyes. She will never forget the man who saved her life. Although, she feels blessed to have received this transplant, it doesn’t make it any easier to accept the fact that someone had to die. It is one of the cruel ironies of life we may never understand. In Notes of a Native Son, James Baldwin realizes and feels that the good and the bad go hand in hand in lifethe death of his father and the birth of his sibling. As I look back at my experience with Kristas transplant, I can honestly say my feelings towards life have been altered to reflect an outlook similar to the one Baldwin experiences.
