Appearance Vs. Reality

Life can be very demanding, especially as a teenager. In society today, it can be very overwhelming and challenging to live as a teenager. It is hard to determine right from wrong, good from bad, appearance from reality. On a daily basis, I am forced to make dicisions in my life that can often lead into big problems. Everyday people have trouble distinguishng the difference between reality and what seems to be real. Often the contrast can blow a minor conflict into a larger problem. In the play Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, the contrast between appearance and reality turned small problems into large problems similar to the way I sturggle in my everyday life.

In Hamlet, Claudius killed the king so he could become the ruler of Denmark. When Hamlet found out about his father’s death, and his mother’s incestuous new love he should have killed Claudius then. If he would have known the difference in what seemed right and what the ghost told him, the tragic events in Act 5 may have never occurred. In Act 5, Scene , Hamlet was putting on a mask. “Give me your pardon, sir. I have done you wrong. But pardon it as you are a gentleman. His madness is poor Hamlet’s enemy.” In this quote Hamlet is speaking to Claudius about the death of Ophelia. He is putting on a mask when he is mad. It is hard to differentiate Hamlet’s feelings when he is upset or when he is bottling up his emotions.

Throughout the play, Hamlet put his emotions on the back burner. In Scene of Act 1, Hamlet recited, “O, that this too, too-solid flesh would melt thaw, and resolve itself into a dew...

but break my heart, for I must hold my tongue.” In this quote Hamlet had the chance to kill Claudius; however, Claudius was praying and Hamlet seemed to think that was the wrong way to kill a man. If Hamlet was thinking straight and saw the reality of the situation rather than being stuck on what seemed right, some of the characters would have survived at the end of the play.

In today’s society many people get caught up in what they think is right, or wrong for that matter. The terrorist attacks on September 11th 001 were a great awakening to the American people. No one thought these men were dangerous before they boarded the airplanes. In fact, they appeared to be normal but the reality was that they were about to kill a ton of people as they crashed into the World Trade Center.

While not as serious as the deaths in Hamlet or the terrorist attacks on September 11th. Family situations often portray the conflict between appearance and reality. A family can look perfectly happy on the outside, but the reality is that the father beats the children, the mom doesn’t have a job and the children do drugs. It just goes to show that appearance has no grasp on the reality of life.

From the tragic deaths in Hamlet to the September 11th attacks the difference between appearance and reality is unchangeable. Many people can get caught in believing that what appears to be right really is right. In society today, it is very difficult to draw a line where reality crosses the path with appearance.

In the play ‘Julius Caesar,’ the leader of Rome is murdered, which leads to a war. The man murdered is Julius Caesar. Even though Caesar is killed half way into the play, he plays a huge roll during his time alive and is the topic of conversation after his death. His ghosts even returns later in Act4, Scene .

At the start of the play, all of Rome was happy with their great leader, Caesar. Rome had a holiday and all the citizens were happy. ‘We make holiday to see Caesar and to rejoice in his triumph,’ said a happy Roman on his holiday (Act1 Sci 1 L ).

Soon later Brutus came into the play and hit center stage. He was the focus. But, all the time that he was the focus, and when he was talking to others, it was always about Caesar and what they were going to do with him. When Cassius was trying to persuade Brutus, the crowd was making large noises from inside the arena. All Brutus could think about when he hears this is if Caesar has been crowned king. He said ‘I do fear the people choose Caesar as their king’ (Act 1 Sci L 7). At this stage, you would believe that the correct name has been chosen for this play.

All through the play, up to Act , Scene 1, all the talk is about killing Caesar. Then Caesar is murdered. Here Caesar puts the attention on Brutus, in the last words before his death. ‘Et tu, Brute,’ Caesar said, putting the spotlight on Brutus (Act Sci 1 L 78). Caesar was astonished to see that one of his greatest friends was involved in a plot against him.

Custom essays on Should the Play ‘Julius Caesar’ be called ‘Brutus’?

Brutus then takes center stage. He takes total control of the situation. He tries to get all the Roman citizens on his side; he even demands attention to himself. He says ‘Follow me and give me audience’ (Act Sci L ). But he is only the focal point for a short while, until Antony takes over.

Antony brings out the body of Caesar and asks for their attention himself. ‘Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears,’ he says (Act Sci L 7). He gets the crowd all exited and on his side, with a little help from the body and the will of Caesar.

After that moment, Brutus and Antony play ver prominent and important rolls in the play. But, by all means this does not mean the play is about them. Even though Caesar does not play a huge roll after his death, the play is based around him. The play is about Caesar’s death, and the reactions and happenings as a result of his death. The play is not based on anyone else, therefor, the name of the play, ‘Julius Caesar,’ is the correct name for the play.

Animal Farm

Independent Novel Study

Napoleon is considered the chief villain in Animal Farm. Many of his actions are uncalled for, and usually result in pain and suffering for the rest of the animals. Throughout the course of the novel he becomes more and more humanlike. In turn, his cruelty towards the other animals also enhances. He takes all the best food for himself, sells the hens eggs, sells Boxer for a crate of whisky, and takes the life of many animals (just to name a few ferocious actions). What Napoleon does is wrong because the animals don’t deserve that kind of treatment. The reason they got rid of Mr. Jones was because he was mistreating them, now Napoleon has put himself in charge without the other animals voting on it, and he is abusing them more than Jones did.

At first Napoleon seems to be a good leader, but he eventually turns bad because he is

overcome with greed and becomes power-hungry. With the aid of his guard dogs and the manipulative abilities of Squealer, Napoleon knows that he can make anybody do or think what he wants.

I think that Napoleon should have followed the commandments left by Old Major. He should also have taken in account the other animals opinions when making a decision (democracy).

In my opinion the most important episode in Animal Farm is when Snowball and Napoleon are arguing over Snowballs plan to build a windmill. During the debate, something terrible happens. Instead of letting the animals decide whether or not to build the structure, Napoleon signals his private troop of attack dogs who chase Snowball off the stage and under the fence, never to be seen again.

This scene is very important because the animal’s future goes downhill from there. From that point on, Napoleon uses his dogs to make the animals do as he pleases.

When I read this chapter I was stunned. It all happened so fast, I had to read the paragraph over about times to make sure I understood what actually happened. At that point in the novel, Napoleon was barely talked about. While Snowball, on the other hand, is the main character in the book at the time.

Napoleon goes through many changes throughout the novel. The two most drastic changes that occur are his consumption of alcohol, and his role as a leader.

Both changes are for the worst. At one time Mr. Jones was a decent master to his animals. At this time the farm was thriving. The farm began to go downhill once he established a drinking problem. Once Napoleon and the other pigs began drinking, the same thing happened, the other animals on the farm had to suffer.

The next change in Napoleon is his leadership role. Once he successfully got rid of Snowball, he quickly became more or less a dictator.

In the past two years I have gone through many changes. The biggest change, in my opinion, is my shyness level. Two years ago, I didn’t even have the guts to say hi to someone who passed by me. Now, I find myself being a lot more confident and I’m not afraid to speak to anyone I’m not familiar with. I think I was able to overcome this by going out a lot more. Now I go out to at least one party a week. While before I used to just stay at home and do nothing.

The ending to Animal Farm was very good. It was as though it was right back at the beginning of the book again. Napoleon and the other pigs have invited Mr. Pilkington and his men over for dinner. The farm animals are glancing through the window of the farmhouse while Mr. Pilkington is congratulating the pigs on the low rations, the long working hours, and the general absence which he had observed on animal farm. Not long after starting a card game, an argument breaks out because two of the same card were played simultaneously. While the pigs and the men are in an uproar, the animals looking through the window can’t make out which is man, and which is pig.

Orwell uses his allegorical farm to symbolize the communist system. Though the original intention of bringing down Mr. Jones, is not inherently evil in itself, Napoleon’s consecutive embrace of nearly all of Mr. Jones’ principles and harsh mistreatment of the animals proves that indeed communism is not equality, but just another form of inequality. The pigs and dogs take most of the power for themselves, thinking that they are the best administrators of government. Eventually the power corrupts them, and they turn on their fellow animals, eliminating competitors through propaganda and bloodshed.

How was the Earth formed? There have been many different theories and ideas of how the Earth came to be. One is the Big Bang Theory. This theory states that the universe started with a giant explosion, the Big Bang. This explosion was extremely hot and when it cooled enough atoms were created to form mass. For years the scientific world has wrestled with this question. Because of the extensive tests, and logical theories, I believe the Big Bang Theory to be the answer to the question.

Many tests have been done throughout time to prove this intangible theory, the Big Bang. Albert Einstein’s equations said that the universe must be expanding or contracting. This all came together when isotropy and homogeneity came into the picture. Homogeneity is evidence that from place to place the average density of matter does not vary. Isotropy says that the direction in space one looks does not change what they see. According to Einstein’s equations the distribution of matter in the universe will remain homogeneous. Concluding that space itself expands or contracts. The distribution between two points would be increasing the faster they would move apart. That would only be if it were expanding (Compton’s Encyclopedia 1). I think that Einstein’s equations were great evidence toward the Big Bang but much more was to come. Scientists believed that as the earth cooled it expanded. Protons began to form after about one second. The isotope of hydrogen was formed in what they call the “first three minutes.” Hydrogen atoms only absorb and emit certain wavelengths. Some wavelengths had been interfering with the free electrons. Today, we can detect free radiation from that change billions of years ago. After cooling cosmic background radiation was formed and first detected in 165. COBE, the Cosmic Background Explorer spacecraft mapped the cosmic background radiation. The distribution of this was matched to the matter that emits radiation because of its temperature. This was predicated for the Big Bang (Microsoft Encarta & ). Going back to the “first three minutes”, other elements such as helium, deuterium, and lithium were formed. They have been observed in abundance by many scientists (The Big Bang Theory 1). All of these tests have helped prove that the Big Bang started it all.

Theories pertaining to the Big Bang have been discovered by a plethora of scientists. In 105, Einstein published his special theory of relativity. Before space and time were thought to have nothing to do with each other. This theory showed that they are related and should be together so it was called space-time. Albert published his general theory of relativity in 116. This related space-time to the distribution of matter in the universe (Compton’s Encyclopedia 1). His equations said that if the universe’s density of matter were equal to certain critical value then it would continue expanding and become slower and eventually stop. If the universes average density is below this certain critical value it will expand forever. Bit if it is above this value then there will be a reversal of the Big Bang called the “Big Crunch”. Now, it is twenty times smaller which states that the universe is open (Compton’s Encyclopedia ). These theories seem pretty solid and the evidence that the universe is open is very strong. Just think, though, what if the universe was closed or what if there was a “Big Crunch”? A man named Alexander Friedmann came up with some solutions for Einstein’s equations, which gave some framework on the Big Bang Theory. In the 140’s George Gamow found out a theory that matched Friedmann’s. He said the universe expanded from a hot, dense state (Microsoft Encarta 1). These theories that started with Albert Einstein gave scientists today a great start.

Edwin Hubble discovered another type of theory. He discovered that the light of distant galaxies is universally shifted. Where did it shift? Well, it shifted to the red end of the spectrum. This means that the galaxies are moving away from each other. He found that the further apart they were the faster they moved (Microsoft Encarta 1). This change, this shift in light was called Redshift. This helps to indicate an object’s motion. Scientists have used redshifts to measure velocities of distant galaxies. Velocities of other galaxies are important because that is how they determine if the university is changing. Also it helps predict its distant future. The redshift only occurs if an object is moving (Redshift 1). Hubble also came up with an equation to see if the universe is open or closed. V=Hr is the equation. It expresses the velocity of the expansion. You need this equation because the decrease in expansion rate tells if the universe is open or closed. This is what each variable stands for V= velocity, r = distance between two points, H = Hubble’s constant. Hubble’s constant relates velocity and distance. Hubble’s constant decreases faster if the universe is closed. To measure H, you have to measure the brightness of distant galaxies. This is misleading, because the distance that needs to measured breaks down (Compton’s Encyclopedia ). This may not be the best way to find if the universe is open or closed, but there are other ways. One such way is measuring the age of the universe, which is the time since the Big Bang. It is called Hubble time. This is expressed as 1/H. If the actual age of the universe is less than / of Hubble time, then it’s closed (Compton’s Encyclopedia ). There are many theories behind the Big Bang Theory that explain how the universe got here.

Order Custom earth paper

In the 10’s a certain magazine held a contest for a better name or euphemism for this theory, but the “Big Bang” stuck. This giant explosion is said to be the reason for the universe forming. Although there are other thoughts and ideas of how the Earth came to be, the Big Bang Theory seems to make the most scientific sense. Its many proven tests and reasonable theories makes this theory the most logical.

Years In Milan

Leonardo left Florence in about 148. We don’t know exactly why he left; perhaps he was attracted to the atmosphere of the court of the Duke of Sforza, with its many Doctors, scientists’ engineers and mathematicians. There were other reasons for leaving Florence, too. There was a very high tax rate, strong competition, and threat of war and plague. Leonardo entered into the service of the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza. He was accepted after having written an amazing letter to the Duke, claiming he could build portable bridges, knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons, and that he could also build cannons, ships and armoured cars. These were not just exaggerated claims, aimed to get a job for himself, as you may think. Leonardo’s note books were full of such things, many of which were flights of fancy, but never the less show him to be a man of great intellect and imagination as well as being ahead of his time. Some of his drawings and designs are showed over the page. His only reference to his great skill at painting was that could “paint and sculpt as well as any other man”.

Leonardo served the Duke happily for 17 years. He had a number of jobs at court, as a military engineer and sculptor. During this time in Milan he built canals, and also planned an extensive irrigation system for the castle. Ludovico wanted Leonardo to make a sculpture of his father; Francesco Sforza mounted on a horse. The statue was to be in bronze and 8 meters high. Sadly French invaders captured Milan before the cast was ready, in 1500 and the model was destroyed.

Jollibee is one of the Philippines phenomenal business success stories. Starting in 175 as a two-branch ice cream parlor, it later expanded its menu to include hot sandwiches and other meals. With encouraging success, Jollibee Foods Corporation was incorporated in 178 with seven outlets to fully explore the possibilities of a hamburger concept. Thus was born the company that revolutionized the fast food industry in the Philippines.

In 184, Jollibee reached the P500 million sales mark, catapulting the company into the list of Top 500 Philippine Corporations. In 187, barely 10 years in the business, the company joined the ranks of the Philippines Top 100 Corporations. It then became the first Philippine fast food chain to break the P1 billion sales mark in 18. In 1, Jollibee became the first food service company to be listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange; thus broadening its capitalization and laying the groundwork for sustained expansion locally and beyond the Philippines.

Undisputed leadership

Jollibee is the countrys leading fast food chain. The size, geographic expanse and breadth of the companys operations have grown exponentially - from a handful of Jollibee stores twenty-five years ago to over 400 stores in the Philippines and several international stores in countries like the United States and Hong Kong. It is now an international brand with phenomenal milestones that has made millions of Filipinos proud.

Order Custom Jobille paper

But Jollibees leadership is not only reflected by market share (the company enjoys more than half of the entire fast food industry); numerous local and global awards attest to this as well.

Expanding market coverage

In line with its long-term goal to be the dominant food service leader in the country, the company acquired Greenwich Pizza in 14 enabling it to penetrate the pizza-pasta segment. From a 50-branch operation, Greenwich has established a strong presence in the food service industry. A year later the company acquired the franchise of Delifrance, an international food company. This further expanded its penetration in the food service industry particularly in the French caf-bakery, a growing segment of the Philippine food market. In 000, the strategic acquisition of Chowking solidified the companys position as the dominant leader and allowed it to have leadership in a major fast food market - the Oriental quick service restaurant segment. The incorporation has revitalized Chowking; providing a platform for the growth of the business and further increasing the enterprise value of the Jollibee Group.

Recipe for success

The foundation of Jollibees rapid growth has been its strategy to establish dominant market coverage complemented by its superior menu line-up, creative marketing programs and efficient manufacturing and logistics facilities in support of its widening restaurant chain. It is powered by teams of well-trained individuals embracing the culture of integrity and humility, working in a family-like environment of fun and togetherness.

As a corporate citizen, Jollibee is also committed to serve its host communities. The company not only nourishes bodies but also peoples spirits through countless socio-civi projects.

A triumph for and of the Filipino

Jollibee dedicates its continuous success to those who have supported the company from the very start - the Filipino people.

Jollibee has grown to be so well loved that every time a new store is opened, especially overseas, Filipinos form long queues to the store without fail. It is not just a place where they feel at home; it is a stronghold of heritage, a monument of Filipino victory.

Day in, day out, Jollibee serves over one million Filipinos who flock to its more than 400 stores all over the country. In ways, small and grand, Jollibees tasty food, cheerful service and friendly crew touch the lives of so many people who leave its stores with happy memories that will last long after that birthday party, first date or even just that simple meal a customer had when he dropped in one rainy day.

From a modest beginning, Jollibee has grown to become not only the number one fast food chain in the Philippines with over 400 stores nationwide, but is also an international brand that has the distinction of being one of the worlds most admired companies by the Far Eastern Economic Review. But Jollibee is not stopping here. To reinforce Jollibees capability to enhance it leadership and build growth, the Management embarked on a broad range of strategic initiatives.

Since its starting 175, the company has expanded tremendously. The phenomenal growth is attributed to the companys unwavering quest to serve and delight the Filipino customer as well as its ability to anticipate and adapt to the ever-changing market environment.

Jollibee continues to push its store network expansion maintaining lead over competition, focused on optimum results from right -sized stores on the best site selection in trading territory. This ensures effective and efficient market coverage.

To meet the challenges of a more intensely competitive market and to manage the business more effectively, the company undertook a major initiative to re-align the structure of Jollibee Philippines. The new organization, which has successfully been put in place, has the capacity of enhancing continued dominance in the quick service industry. In 000 Jollibee Philippines was decentralized into four autonomous Regional Business Units (RBU), corresponding to the countrys major geographic markets Mega Manila, North Luzon, South Luzon and Visayas-Mindanao.

The decentralization has structured each RBU into a more manageable business size and span of control. Key support functions like human resources and administration, finance and network development have been transferred to the RBU for greater efficiency in the delivery of products and services, quicker coordination and more timely decision-making.

The Head Office/Corporate Services functions (Marketing, Finance, Restaurant Systems, Engineering) have been re-aligned as Support Center to provide continuing assistance to the RBUs and provide corporate-level directions.

The new structure has proven to be more responsive to the needs and challenges of a rapidly growing organization and an even more dynamic market. The program has resulted to better execution of programs and renewed enthusiasm and commitment from the Jollibee people.

Parallel to all of the above initiatives is the continuous improvement of operating productivity and efficiency across the Jollibee fastfood chain. It continues to initiate improvements on equipment and facilities as well as store procedures to generate faster volume turnover and achieve better quality in the delivery of products.

Jollibee remains firm in its resolve to maintain its dominance in the fastfood industry. It will continue to push forward with its strategic programs and aggressively pursue further network expansion to ensure superior market coverage nationwide. Most importantly, it will continually apply itself to the paramount task of consistently delivering superior tasting products at the most affordable prices and services of the highest standards in a bright and clean store environment.

Jollibees advertising is deeply rooted in the traditional Filipino values of family and love for children. Fueled by Filipino creativity, its expression Atin ang Langhap Sarap! is anchored on its products unique taste and superiority.

It aims to be perpetually in the public consciousness through television, radio, print, cinema advertisements and billboards. The company also sponsors selected community activities. Moreover, premium items and toys are offered to bring home and display on the toy shelf.

Likewise, as a way to ensure that the superior equity is sustained and a strong, cohesive and comprehensive visual identification in all Jollibee stores is created, a system - wide Jollibee retail identity was initiated. The international graphic design group, Addison was commissioned to formulate the new retail identity that is more dynamic and fun-oriented. The new retail identity is an integrated system encompassing the total restaurant design from the menu-board and various signages, the dining equipment and area, to the Playland and other facilities.

The product menu is continually reviewed to sustain consumer excitement. Existing products are improved and re-launched. New products are test-marketed in keeping with the strategy of having a continuing fresh line up of products. All these to respond to customers changing needs and preferences which has been a major factor in Jollibees success.

Welcome to the International Operations Site of Jollibee Foods Corporation. JFC now has 8 restaurants operating in 7 countries - and we continue to grow!

JFC reported unaudited consolidated recurring net income of Php85 million for 18, up % over the Php647 million in 17. This translates to earnings per share of Php0.05, an increase of % over Php0.75 in 17.

However, net income including the extraordinary gain of Php million in 18 and the extraordinary loss of Php05 million in 17, amounted to Php876 million for 18, an increase of 8% over the Php44 million in 17. This translates to earnings per share of Php0.8, an increase of 85% over the Php0.50 in 17.

Consolidated revenues increased by 1% to Php11.6 billion from Php8. billion in 17. Revenues and earnings were driven by system wide sales were Php14.5 billion in 18, 0% higher than the Php11. billion in 17.

The very satisfactory financial result we achieved in the weaker economic climate of 18 is a reflection of the relative resiliency of the fast-food sector, as well as the strong business focus that we have endeavored to maintain in the company, Tony Caktiong, JFC President and Chief Executive Officer said.

We are also fortunate to have a very healthy balance sheet with a strong net cash position during these challenging times, he continued. In conjunction with the successful public offering of 0 million Jollibee warrants affiliate Queenbee Resources Corporation in March, Jollibee raised Php1. billion of additional equity through the sale of 7. million new common shares. This enabled the company to retire its entire dollar-denominated debt.

The Company - the countrys largest fast-food corporation - exceeded its planned expansion goals during the year. Jollibee had a net addition of 5 stores in the Philippines in 18 and ended the year with 0 outlets. Greenwich added 48 new stores in 18 for a total of 16 stores nationwide at year-end.

Tan Caktiong said he believed that Greenwich has gained the leadership in the pizza-pasta market segment. In 18 it contributed about Php billion in system wide sales, 85% higher than the previous year.

Tan also noted that despite the very satisfactory performance registered by the Company for the year, Jollibee continues to be concerned about the current economic environment. He cited the continued foreign exchange volatility that affects costs. We are likewise concerned about the growing unemployment level and declining disposable incomes of domestic and overseas workers in the light of the economic slowdown both here and abroad, he said. This, he explained, will lead to weaker overall consumer demand.

Despite the difficult environment, JFC expressed confidence that it can maintain its momentum in the medium-term on the basis of its strong leadership in the fast-food industry. The Company was named the Philippines leading company by the Far Eastern Economic Review in its annual survey of Asias top corporations and was cited its strong management, business focus, and its financial prudence. JFC also won recognition as the Employer of the Year by the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines for 18.

JFCs meat processing plant at its Pasig commissary was recently awarded ISO 00 certification, becoming the first meat plant in the country to get distinction

NOTHING IN THE INNER sanctum of Tony Tan Caktiong tells you he is CEO, president and key shareholder of Jollibee, the largest and most profitable fast-food chain in the Philippines. The room is intended solely for thinking and doing. No paintings hang on the beige walls. The floors gray vinyl tiles are bare except for an executive desk and a glass-topped conference table. The CEO himself, who declines to be photographed, can be mistaken for an underling. His white long-sleeved shirt rolled at the cuffs, the youthful Tan, 46, is puzzled by questions about how Jollibee managed to prosper despite the Asian Crisis. We have been providing value and being very cost-conscious all this time, he says. We just made sure we continued doing these things.

Lateral thinking helped. Jollibee borrowed $8. million in foreign currency in 16. When the peso plunged 0% against the dollar the next year, interest payments took a big bite out of earnings. Profit in 17 fell 7% in peso terms to 441.7 million pesos ($11 million) on sales of 7. billion pesos ($180 million). Jollibees solution tap foreign investors. But Philippine law prohibits non-Filipinos from owning a retail operation. So the company issued warrants backed by common stock it held in trust. The debt was wiped out - and Jollibee also ended up with $1 million in cash. Unaudited 18 results indicate that profit soared 8% to $.4 million on turnover of $71 million. And earnings in January to March this year topped $5.8 million, up 4% in pesos from the same period in 18.

Crisis? What Crisis? Asian companies like Jollibee prove that not all boats sink when a super-typhoon strikes. Well-managed corporations that boast a ship-shape franchise can emerge as winners. Their stock price may languish. But long-term investors will be supportive - even if, as in Jollibees case, what is on offer are just warrants, which carry no voting rights and have no first claim on dividends (although cash and stock dividends due the underlying common shares are credited to warrant holders in the form of additional warrants the company buys from the market). When the recovery comes, expect the Crisis survivors to perform even better. Last week, Jollibees strong first-quarter earnings propelled its stock 11% from its lowest point last year (click here for chart). The warrants have gained 1% from the offering price of 1.5 pesos in March last year.

To be sure, the 1-year-old Jollibee has a built-in advantage. It is in the food business, an industry that is almost recession-proof - people have to eat in good times and bad. A number of Asias food, beverage and tobacco companies are doing well (click here for chart). But not everyone. McGeorge, the McDonalds franchise holder in the Philippines, imports a significant portion of its ingredients. The private company reported income of $45,000 on sales of $77.5 million in 17, for a profit margin of 0.4% (Jollibee 6.1%). While analysts estimate McDonalds share of the $760-million Philippine fast-food market at 0%, Jollibee has been notching double-digit annual growth to claim more than half of total sales last year. Its the only fast-food chain in the world that is dominating at this rate, says Colbert Nocom, research director of ING Baring in Manila.

What Jollibee has done is to follow Western business models to sell food suited to Philippine tastes. We have always benchmarked ourselves against other firms, says Tan. We looked at McDonalds because it is the giant in fast food worldwide. But we also looked at Singapore Airlines and Walt Disney. Jollibees 08 burger-and-chicken restaurants and 16 pizza outlets sport the clean and well-lighted look of a McDonalds and operate with the pared-down efficiency of Singapore Airlines. Its marketing zeal - Jollibee spends 4% of gross sales on advertising - is Disney-like. It was able to change the food preferences of an entire generation by bombarding the nation with ads, says Nocom.

McDonalds, which set up shop in the Philippines in 181, three years after Jollibee was started, is playing catch-up. McGeorge owner George Yang will spend $50 million in the next five years to double the number of Golden Arches to 400. McDonalds has started selling Pinoyburger, a juicier and sweeter product similar to Jollibees Yumburger. It is also trying to reach not only Westernized urbanites but also the much more numerous middle and lower classes, Jollibees main base.

But Jollibee is also on the move. With the Crisis, we made sure we had value meals at different price points, so that no matter what the consumers budget, Jollibee has something delicious to offer, says Regina Navarrete, vice president for marketing. Jollibee also held price increases at 8.5% to McDonalds 10%, says Dipak Jethwa of OCBC Securities. The countrys inflation rate was .7% last year. The Crisis pulled in new customers as high-income families cut spending. Some switched from gourmet restaurants to fast food, says Tan.

Jollibee is counting on expansion at home and abroad to continue growing. It aims to add 44 new burger-and-chicken outlets and 40 pizza parlors by the end of the year. Some will be awarded to franchisees, who will need to put up at least $500,000. Jollibee is also expanding overseas, although its record there is mixed. A restaurant that opened last June in Daly City, California, which has a large Philippine population, is grossing $1,000 a day. But outlets in Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates folded last year. Tan says Philippine contract workers in these places prefer to save their money. Jollibees ice cream and doughnut shops have also been closed, while a decision is awaited on outlets serving bakery items and roast chicken.

These missteps aside, analysts give Jollibee high marks for experienced management. Tien Doe of Jardine Fleming says the Philippine market is big enough to support 60 more Jollibee outlets. But that will require upward of $10 million in fresh expenditures. Tan says there are no plans to issue new warrants to raise fresh capital, but Jollibee may get foreign money if the countrys retail law is amended, a measure strongly backed by President Joseph Estrada. Yum, yum.

The implications of electronic commerce (e-commerce) are the biggest issues facing most accounting organizations in the 1st century. E-commerce is the use of information technology and electronic communication networks to exchange business information and conduct business transactions in electronic, paper less forms. This definition illustrates that e-commerce is just commerce that now uses more electronic forms of communication (such as the Internet and E-mail) as opposed paper, face-to-face, telephone, television, or more traditional forms of communication. Due to the increase in speed, availability, and reduction of cost, this form of commerce has become adapted to almost all types of businesses.

The availability of the Internet is the primary reason for the explosion of e-commerce. Businesses can now communicate through E-mail, purchase goods on the Internet, and post web sites to help advertise their services. This has affected the accounting aspect of all businesses as well. Companies can now put their information on a web sites for stake holders to access at any time of the day. Also, online educational services also make it easier for businesses to keep updated on the latest technology or allow people to take courses via the Internet. This benefit also allows a CPA to complete their continuing education to maintain their licenses online. Also, Accounting majors may very soon be able to even take their CPA exam on-line.

With the availability of e-commerce, companies can now post their financial statements on-line. This has great benefit to stakeholders because information is now in real time and can be updates in hours as opposed to days or weeks. There is also a greater geographical reach and 4/7 availabiltiy. However, this also makes financial statements easier to modify and harder to control. Many companies in the last few years have been taking advantage of this to alter thier income statements and balance sheet. Companies can confuse people to what information was audited and what was not by using hyperlinks to redirect the user from audited sections to unaudited sections. Stake holders must be very careful to the reliability and accuracy of the data.

‘Epic Theatre’ is a term used to define a form of theatre that utilises various eccentric devices to produce plays that aim to evoke thought over feeling. “It turns the spectator into an observer, but arouses his/her capacity for action, and forces him to make decisions... the spectator stands outside and studies” (Brecht, B. 1647). The main goal of Epic Theatre, as Brecht described it, is to employ didactic and other techniques as well as entertaining theatre to promote political awareness.

This analysis will aim to effectively analyse the statement, ‘Epic Theatre is the Union of the Lecture Hall and the Circus’ and prove this by analysing certain techniques, such as didactic, alienation and translation, utilised in a play Brecht adapted from an ancient Chinese parable written in 100 A.D. by Klabund, entitled the ‘Circle of Chalk’. Brecht adapted this story and changed the setting to Soviet Georgia prior to the end of the Second World War and entitled it the ‘Caucasian Chalk Circle’. This study will focus on the second scene of the play.

The Singer, or Narrator, from the first scene begins the story of the Chalk Circle. It begins in the fictional country of Grusinia, ruled by the Governor Georgi Abashvili who is married to Natella and has a son named Michael. Soon the Governor is murdered and the Governor’s brother, the Fat Prince usurps power and takes over the city. Simon Chachava, a soldier, searches out Grusha Vachnadze, the central character of the first half of the play. He informs her that he will protect the Governors wife as she flees the city. Simon then rather strangely asks Grusha for her hand in marriage. She accepts and receives a silver cross to wear as a sign of their engagement before he leaves. Soon after, the Governors wife arrives with her child Michael. In her haste to flee the city, and to save her dresses, she leaves her child Michael behind. One of her servant women sees Michael and hands him to Grusha.

As stated earlier, Brechtian theatre aims to evoke thought over emotion, thus giving the audience something to consider, or a learning message. These messages are known as didactics. The didactic of a play is a theatre technique that attempts to convey a message to the audience, whilst entertaining the viewers as well as teaching them. One of the main didactics running throughout ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ is the message of sacrifice.

An example of this technique is situated at the end of the second scene. Grusha is handed the now abandoned Michael and chooses to sacrifice her safety by taking the child with her to save its life. The message being sent allows the audience to decide for themselves whether Grusha is a thief and should be punished or whether she is a heroine who should be rewarded for her sacrifice. Brecht wanted the audience to realise that a selfless sacrifice will more than likely be rewarded at some point in time, which is evident at the end of the play. An example of such sacrifice in this scene are provided below, outlining Grusha’s thoughts on whether she should sacrifice her welfare for the well-being of the child.

The Singer loudly

Terrible is the temptation to do good!

For a long time she sat with the child.

Evening came, night came, dawn came.

Too long she sat, too long she watched

The soft breathing, the little fists

Till towards morning the temptation grew too strong.

She rose, she leaned over, she sighed, she lifted the child

She carried it off.

(The Caucasian Chalk Circle, B. Brecht, 184 p.5)

This excerpt reinforces the statement that Epic Theatre resembles the Union of the Lecture Hall and the Circus by making sure the audience is aware of the facts, as they would be in the Lecture Hall in order to receive the didactic of sacrifice.

Brecht’s most fundamental theatrical modernisation was that his plays would occasionally ‘alienate’ the audience from characters hence the name alienation. This was because he felt that the audience needed to be aware of the fact that they were simply watching a representation of reality, and not reality itself. This distancing technique was utilised to ensure spectators didn’t become too attached to the characters.

An example of this technique is in Scene Two, ‘The Noble Child’. This scene ends with Grushas act of sacrifice when she is handed Michael and takes him with her in order to save him from certain death. Usually, this scene would take a quite emotional or dramatic turn. Instead, Brecht also points out to the audience that they should not be seduced by how well meaning Grusha appears to be. Through Brecht’s writing, it is led to believe that he did not want people to believe that Grusha is the heroine as of yet. He required the audience be presented with the facts. In his writing, he presents to the audience another side of the case, telling us that in reality, she is a thief who has stolen a child.

The Singer

Like booty she took it for herself

Like a thief she sneaked away

(The Caucasian Chalk Circle, B. Brecht, 184 p.5)

Alienating playwriting as such reinforces that Epic Theatre resembles the Union of the Lecture Hall and the Circus by making sure the audience is alienated from the usual ‘circus’ in order to receive the didactic of sacrifice. This particular excerpt is a prime example of alienation as it sways the audience’s initial perception. Brecht destroys the audience’s image of Grusha for a particular reason he does not want the audience to be beguiled by her in the same way she has become seduced by the child’s innocence.

‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’

Another technique used by Brecht is known as translation. This technique, the meaning of which is rather blatant, is utilised for the sole purpose of helping the audience better understand the goings-on of the play by allowing events to be deciphered and interpreted through use of songs, poems, narration, placards, slides, etc. (Class notes, 00)

All through ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ a certain character, known only as the Singer,

‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’‘’

Subsequent to the assessment of Bertolt Brecht’s playwriting techniques, the above analysis has established the statement that Epic Theatre is undeniably the union of the lecture hall and the circus. By exploring the utilisation of didactic, alienation and translation techniques in Scene Two of The Caucasian Chalk Circle, it is evident that this piece of epic theatre joins the enjoyment of the circus with the lessons of a lecture hall, and, by extension, Epic Theatre itself is an intriguing mix of enjoyment and above all, education.

The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a play of deceit and revenge. “The Murder of Gonzago,” which is a play-within-the-play, is a tool used by the character of Hamlet to reveal the deceit of his uncle Claudius and seek out revenge. During the play-within-the-play, through his words and actions, Hamlet opposes his philosophical views, goal of revenge and today’s moral standards. The practicality of the scene and justification of Hamlet’s actions are questionable.

Throughout much of the play, different characters spy on Hamlet. He is aware of most of these times and seems to be morally opposed to it. However, by using the play to get his uncle to confess, he is, in a sense, spying on him. Hamlet tells his friend Horatio to watch Claudius’s actions during the play. He says to him, “Observe my uncle.”(I.ii.85). Hamlet is telling Horatio to spy on Claudius although he was angry when Claudius and others spied on him.

Hamlet seems to have a respect for women. Throughout the whole play, despite his anger, he never disrespected his mother. The only time he was less than respectful towards Ophelia was in the nunnery scene, however, he was putting on his antic disposition. In this scene, Hamlet is particularly rude to Ophelia and his mother. He makes the comment to Ophelia, “What a fair thought to lie between maids’ legs.” (III.ii.15-16.). He also makes a sexual comment to Ophelia, telling her, “It would cost you a groaning to take off mine edge.” (III.ii.7-74.). When Ophelia comments on the prologue of the play being brief, Hamlet remarks that it is “As a woman’s love.” (III.ii.174-175.). This remark could be directed on Ophelia’s feelings towards him or Gertrude’s feelings towards old Hamlet. He also notices and remarks to Ophelia how is mother is acting. He says, “For look how cheerfully my mother looks, and my father died within’s two hours.” (III.ii.1-15.). Hamlet is extremely disrespectful towards both his mother and Ophelia, despite actions in the beginning of the play that show he has a deep respect for women.

Hamlet also seems opposed to deceiving other people. He is angry with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for acting deceitful towards him. Nevertheless, he is angry with Claudius for acting as if nothing happened and is using the play and the players to trick him into revealing his guilt. Hamlet is also deceiving everyone into thinking he is insane. Although he is opposed to deceit, he is using it as a weapon himself.

Hamlet’s actions are practical in this case because he is pretending to be crazy so he could use that as an excuse for putting aside any views he might have about proper conduct. While they are practical, his actions are not justifiable. No person should throw aside his values and philosophies under any circumstances.

Hamlet’s behavior also opposes his goal of revenge. His goal is to observe Claudius’s actions during the play; instead he is loud and disruptive. After the player Queen talks about marrying the man who killed her husband, Hamlet screams out, “That’s wormwood.” (III.ii.04.). Also during the play, Hamlet emphasizes parts of the play he wants Claudius to take notice to. For example, “You shall see anon how the murderer gets the love of Gonzago’s wife.” (III.ii.8-0.). Hamlet wants to see how Claudius reacts to the play itself, yet he stirs him up by yelling out parts of the plot. Claudius may suspect what Hamlet is trying to do.

Hamlet’s orders by the ghost of his father were to not involve his mother in his revenge. He however makes the comment about how cheerfully she looks and when Polonius tells him that the Queen wants to speak with him, Hamlet ignores him and changes the subject. (III.ii.404-407.). Hamlet seems to have a hard time keeping his mother in his revenge despite his father’s request.

Hamlet’s actions in terms of his goal of revenge were not very practical. He wanted to see Claudius’s reaction to the play, however by interfering and emphasizing certain parts of the play, he may have lead Claudius to believe that he was suspicious of him. This may have given Claudius reason to not react in a way that would reveal his guilt. Hamlet’s behavior is, however, justified in this case. He is angry with his mother and Claudius and is excited to reveal the truth. He may want to make Claudius’s reaction more drastic by letting him know that he is aware of his crime. His actions towards his mother are justified because he is probably most hurt and angered by her.

Hamlet’s words and actions would go against moral standards set today. His remarks to Ophelia could be considered harassment. Also, today, young people are expected to have a respect for their elders. Hamlet does not exert this in his actions towards Polonius. He ignores him while he is trying to talk to him and he makes fun of him. When Hamlet asks if he acted in plays, Polonius says, “I did enact Julius Caesar. I was killed I’ th’ Capitol. Brutus killed me.” Hamlet replies, “It was a brute part of him to kill so capital a calf there.” (III.ii.10-11.). While Polonius thinks Hamlet is complimenting him he is actually mocking him. Also, kids generally have a respect for their parents. Hamlet, however, is rude to both his mother and Claudius.

If Hamlet lived today, his actions would not be practical. They could potentially get him in a great deal of trouble. Ophelia could file a harassment suit against him. Also, since Polonius was so close to Claudius, he would probably report Hamlet’s disrespect to him. Claudius would probably punish Hamlet for this. His actions are justified because all he would have to do is accuse Claudius of murder and his misconduct would quickly be forgotten.

Hamlet’s behavior during the play-within-the-play is his way of putting on an antic disposition and attempting to reveal Claudius’s guilt. It may go against his goal of revenge and today’s moral standards, yet it can be justified. His anger and resentment cause his abnormal behavior. There is no justification, however, for going against his philosophical beliefs. Hamlet should not have compromised this for anything. Nevertheless, the actions of his uncle and his mother may have spoiled any sane thoughts he had. Most people probably would have reacted the same way Hamlet did during this scene.

During the later half of the 1800s, the U.S. experienced dramatic economic growth. That growth was possible because of the resources available in the U.S. and lead to much progress and also many problems.

The Gilded Age was time of materialism and cultural shallowness. It occured in the later half of the nineteenth century because people were making and giving money freely. Many wealthy people were giving money in many directions especially to the universites. Also economists restated the importance of laissez-faire to economic growth. Government interference with business was minimal during this period, and entrepreneurs expanded their business and earned great wealth. To support the importance of laissez-faire capitalists looked at Charles Darwins theory of natural selection other wise known as Social Darwinism. Social Darwinists said that life was a struggle of survival of the fittest. Non-governmental interference on business competition would weak businesses fail and healthy businesses do well. Government interference would interfere with natural selection. However this also prevented the government from helping the poor or workers as this would violate natual laws as well.

There were many leaders of the gilded age. Some of them were Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan, and Henry Ford. Carnegie started working young and worked his way through many jobs. He invested his money very well until he had enough to but a steel factory. The steel industry was rising dramtically at this time because of the railroads being built. In 101 he sold his company for 50 million dollars. He believed the wealthy had a debt to society and ended up giving millions to charity. Rockefeller entered the oil-refining business during the civil war. He used ruthless methods to get rid of the competition and soon owned 0% of the American oil-refinery with his company Standard Oil. He also ended up giving millions of dollars to charity. Morgan trained as a banker and profited by making loans to growing businesses. He controlled a variety of companies from electrical to insurance to shipping. In 101 he bought Carnegie Steel and merged it with other companies and created the United States Steel Corporation, the worldd largest. Ford revolutionized automaking in 11 by using a moving assembly line that permitted the mass production of cars, which significantly lowered the cost of production. Ford also paid his men higher wages that set a standard to allow labors to afford purchases as large as these.

During the later half of the 1800s, the U.S. experienced dramatic economic growth. That growth was possible because of the resources available in the U.S. that lead to much progress. Laissez-faire allowed businessman to run businesses without government inference and this pioneered the types of businesses that we have today.

Today¡¯s biological engineering and medical technology have made several impacts on people¡¯s lives. The technology of cloning animals has become more and more mature, and the moral and ethic topics come down to and controversially debated is whether cloning humans is ethically right. As history shown, many wars have been fought between people with different religions, of different races and skin colors and beliefs. If cloning humans were created, would they be treated as normal human beings and given the same rights or would they be treated as scientific experiments and military tools? Long time ago, I saw a movie called ¡°Ghost in a shell¡±. It describes, in the near future, artificial humans are created and they are much more stronger, faster and smarter than normal human beings since their bodies were implanted with high quality mechanical materials and their brains are half made up of computer chips which connect to a virtual vast database, the net. In the movie, some of those artificial humans are used as polices to chase criminals and some are used as experiments. They have equivalent rights as humans such as the right to get married and lived together, but they are still largely controlled by humans. However, since they are so superior, some of them begin and try to take control of the human world and the movie ends with a temporary defeat of the artificial humans ¨C the master mind still remains alive and a mystery. The purpose of this movie is to tell people the bodies are just tools for the livings and what make the real identities of humans or even creatures are their souls, thus the movie titled ¡°Ghost in a shell¡±. Take a step further, will there be any differences between say, human vs. human and human vs. aliens, or in this case, human vs. artificial humans? I doubt it. Every creature ¡°with a soul¡± tries to take the advantages for its race, community, family or itself, and the consequences, no matter good or bad, are what come back inevitably for the creature to endure. When the times come, do humans really have the powers to control their own fates or even those of the others? In other words, delays of a process can not stop its grow. I¡¯d say what comes around goes around. The technology of cloning should be used and developed. It doesn¡¯t matter whether a superior human form is developed or the existing human form is enhanced. ¡°Survive the fittest¡± ¨C it is all part of growing and evolution process.

The differences between eighteenth-century literature and

romantic poems, with respect to history is constituted here. This is

seen through the influential works of John Keats and Alexander Pope.

These works are acknowledged as, The Rape of Lock and The Eve of

Buy 18 th Century Poem Analysis term paper

St. Agnes. Alexander Pope takes his readers on a hatred filled epic.

A robust piece of literature and love induced psychoses in, The Rape

of Lock. On the other hand, The Eve of St. Agnes told a tale of

life, love, death, and eternal fate in heaven. These two brilliant

writers have given two magnificent poems. Pope exhibits many

characteristics of a narcissistic human being. His independence in

life shows through his writings in fiction. Which inevitably portray

his deeper feelings of life. Popes efforts here are of outstanding

quality. However, his poem did fail to convince Arabella to rsum

her engagement to Lord Petre. Most of Popes efforts here were

written with time. Now, Keats has romantically serenaded his reader

with descriptive lust and desire, which can be compared with popes

efforts by the difference in eighteenth century literature and

romantic poems, their descriptive natures and ideas they portray to

the reader through their writing.

Pope has written an eighteenth-century poem which he calls,

An Hero-Comical Poem. This poem has exalted an over all sense of

worthlessness for common rules. The mentioning of Achilles and the

ever-popular Aeneas, are symbols of Popes Gothic style. Pope speaks

(almost) G-D like throughout, The Rape of Lock. Contrary to Keats,

who is more down-to-earth with his sense of realism in his writings.

In the beginning of Keats romantic premise to life in St. Agnes, all

is cold. The opening sequence brings a sense of realism to this

bitter cold scene. Cold owls, rabbits, and numb fingers on a holy,

Beads man. The Beads man symbolizes the sense of age and spirit.

Much of this poem is a test of Keats inner soul or spirit. He has

lead himself to St. Agnes for his own personal account of life in a

time long gone. Keats romantic style has brought visionary raw

emotion to the aching hearts of all his readers. Then, both poems go

separate ways in their tales of body and spirit.

Taking account of all differences in these two works, has

brought out a sense of unknown extasy. Pope displays morality with

his own twists on fate and man kinds inability to rationalize right

decision making in life. He complicates this with, Moral

superiority and his visions of old styles blended with his attitude

for recognition. Pope has indulged the reader in consistent religious

order, and awkward justice for mankind. However, when viewing Keats

poem stanza by stanza, much is revealed. Keats tale starts as a

direct eagerness for future considerations. His image of love and old

age creates a stifled knot in the stomach of the reader. Enthusiastic

resistance is overcome by Keats smooth flow, and harmonizing beauty in

heaven. Angels and death are brought together like osmosis. His

ability to start off in a cold bitter atmosphere of regret, and then

sway the readers emotion to a peaceful loving atmosphere is in itself

astonishing. Desire brings Keats to the heightened point of emotional

gratification within, The Eve of St. Agnes. St. Agnes is such a

peaceful age-old memory for Keats. He presents strength when pain is

being inflicted. His early images of purgatory, show Keats in a bind

of human emotion and regret for past sins. However, Pope does this

as well throughout, The Rape of Lock. Although, Pope is less

likely to find a happy medium in his tale of tolerance. He does

manage to relinquish all his desires for the sake of his own inner

strength. This strength is portrayed more intensely through his soul.

Memories are key to the anguish of the poem. In all of Keats

mediocre issues come love and honor. The entire tenth stanza is

caused by the emotions involved with love. However, this must leave

some readers at a loss. Keats doesnt seem to really care whether

anybody understands him. Keats only concern is to repent and achieve

harmony in life with his body and soul. Each of these two poets has

signified their lack of realism with a substantial concern for age-old

myth, and undeniable love. The portrayal of love in each poem has

brought most of the emotional satisfaction from the reader. Hence,

having observed these two magnificent artists for their personal

adherence to the reader, it is necessary to delve into the emotional

collaboration of imagery and its effect on the mind, body, and soul of

the two sides involved in each reading.

Imagery can sustain many possible contradictions on the

writers intentions. For instance, Keats hides his characters(Porphro

and Madeline) in order to present a more lustful in-depth love.

Safety is a key to Keats prolific attitude on the secrecy of a

womans virginity. A wholesome outlook is always in the future, it

would seem. However, this outlook is never reached throughout the

poem. In comparison with Pope, Keats has distinguished himself in his

writing. Pope relies on old myths and obscure legends in order to

achieve his outcome of clarity. Each writer has their own hero of the

day. In each writers mind is the idea that one can be g-d through

their own scripture. Each must be excused for not always being able

to know what is still real and what is fiction in life. Their

expensive minds have brought their own personal truth to light. Can

they hear the crying of their love sick pasts? In classic style, Pope

has brought dreams to reality. While Keats has more realistically

attended to his personal experiences. In addition to women, love,

g-d, sex, soul, mind, and body, Keats and Pope have taken different

outlooks on many similar issues. Keats has given the reader a more

intense feeling of desire and lust, then Pope. However, when myth and

love collide Alexander Pope has answered with his tale of g-ds,

angels and afterlife. As an empirical narcissistic person, I have

romanticized about the romances Keats has described. His inner

thoughts are more clear, then those of Pope. Additionally, Pope is

more morbid and in a way sour about his shortcomings in life. Which

are expressed significantly in many of Popes images. For instance,

poetic eyes is used by Pope on line 14. This image can be

expressed as a better way for the reader to see that life imitates

art! Now, viewing both works in detail has brought out an arousal of

insecurity and misunderstood quality. However, each has distinguished

its own identity by its style.

Referring back to the comparison of Pope and Keats styles can

be quite an enhancement upon the cerebral context in each poem. Pope

has strictly concerned himself with literary merit, and ghostly

apparitions of old tales that haunt all writers of the possibility for

brilliance. Keats however, has staked his claim as a romantic

idealist of love and thought. Mind, body and soul are key factors in

both of these works. Heaven is portrayed as a savior to man, and an

unforsaken goal for others. Spirituality reigns deep within the

hearts of both Keats and Pope. Consequence is not an issue, but the

ability to repent through words of wisdom is. This is what keeps Keats

and Pope sane(As well as many other writers, including myself). With

wisdom comes age, and with desire comes lust. Therefore, romantic

poets need to be preserved for their tremendous ability to stretch the

common ability to comprehend all of lifes trials and tribulations as

seen here in all its glory!

Suffering Animals and the Suffering Boy

Oliver twist and Animal farm are two novels written by two very different authors at two very different times. Both stories talk about suffering but how each author proves his point, is very different. The governments, which they write their stories about, are very different. The bottom line however, is suffering. Human suffering is a part of human nature. Each era has human suffering within the government that is dictating at the time. Animal farm is a book written about communism. Oliver twist is a book written about capitalism. Both governments brought human suffering to those who were less fortunate. Animal farm and Oliver twist are two very different books, but with authors that wanted to express the government, and the suffering that it causes the people.

Both of the Authors, George Orwell and Charles Dickens, wanted to express the suffering of people in two different governments. George Orwell in Animal farm arranged a farm setting representing a communist dictatorship. Orwell used Pigs as the head leaders, used harsh slogans, and made the animals follow a book that mirrored Mao’s little red book. George Orwell used this symbolic communist setting to tell a story of suffering “farm animals” (a.k.a people) in a communist government and the devastation it causes. Charles Dickens’s Novel Oliver Twist is written to reflect the rise of capitalism during the Industrial Revolution. Dickens’s Characters reflect a huge difference in the economy and government. He does this by setting the novel around children and adults, showing the huge gap of control between an adult and children. Adults represent the head of state, and children like Oliver, were presumably able to control their own businesses. Although the huge control gap between the characters symbolizes the demeaning of the townspeople, and wealth that was brought to the leaders. Both of the authors created a setting, that mirrors a type of government to prove a point. In a communist dictatorship people have no control over their life. A capitalist dictatorship however, gives the people the freedom to own their own private businesses. Together the governments represent a time of fierce individualism, and the growth and decline of the economy.

Individualism, the theory that one should have freedom in one’s economic pursuits and should succeed by ones own initiative, is very much a part of both the novels. Oliver and the farm animals, both want to control the time and salary of their work. The books are a fight with individualism. Oliver lives in a time where individualism is possible because of the capitalist government. The farm animals are told when and why to work by the pigs. The farm animals had absolutely no control over their time and efforts. The rise of Capitalism during the industrial revolution gave Individualism to the time of Oliver. Individualism in Animal was quite different, because it was nonexistent. The animals fought with communism and individualism for the people. Oliver Twist and Animal Farm both expressed individualism, but like many of their thoughts in the book, they achieved what they wanted to express in different ways.

Buy Suffering Animals and the Suffering Boy term paper

The authors of the books approached the writing of their thoughts in a different ways even though their meaning is quite similar. Orwell for animal uses much more subtle irony and Dickens used very much sarcasm. “All that year the animals worked like slaves” (AF pg. 7) , the animals of animal farm were supposed to be shown as slaves of communism. Orwell‘s writing style was one without blunt sarcasm. Orwell uses “Animalism” which is the revolution in animal farm to symbolize communism, another example how he did not use straight words of communism. “A beadle ordered to hold his tongue! A moral revolution!” (OT pg. ) this quote is said in Oliver twist representing the high esteem the beadle holds for himself as a member of society. Both quotations show the difference in the writing styles, while expressing the same thought.

Although the tone of Animal Farm and Oliver Twist is different, that is not the only style from their writing that can be compared. In Animal farm, Orwell uses very little dialogue. This symbolizes the lack of communication in a Communist government between the authorities, the pigs, and the governed, the farm animals. When dialogue is used in Animal Farm, it is used by the pigs showing that the Communist Leaders had the only jurisdiction. “When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out” (AF, Pg. 5-5). The quote describes the dogs being ordered by the pigs to remove the throats of farm animals. This quote symbolizes that the farm animals had no say in their lives just like a communist government. Dickens, however, uses a theme of sadness, bringing a feeling of suffering to his text. “ It was almost too much happiness to hear. He could not weep, or speak, or rest” p. 5 (Oliver Twist). The sad tone of the writing in Oliver is usually cast upon Oliver from his advisors. This symbolizes the consequences of suffering from the domination of the government. The relationship between the stories textiles is the oppression from the government and the affect it has on the actual lives of the characters of the story. The oppression from both the communist and capitalist government represents the suffering that takes place in both dictatorships.

Orwell and Dickens used their novels, to reflect the human suffering of their times. Although both of the authors used writing styles that were quite different, they expressed many of the same views on suffering, and individualism. In the end of Oliver Twist, all of the characters turn against each other, which also happens in Animal farm. This event in both of the novels represents the view point of the authors. The Capitalist and communist government are not the best governments for the people. Both authors, ahead of their time, wrote novels that expressed the views of suffering people in their government. The authors, although wrote with very different views and styles, had the same point that they wanted to achieve.
