Homework Chapter 18. ,,6,,11

. Historically, the three major sources of the public debt have been wars, recessions, and tax-rate cuts. Annual deficits were so large in 180s because the 181 tax cuts, combined with the severe 180-18 recession, generated rapidly rising annual deficits. The deficit rose sharply in 11 and 1 because the Federal government incurred massive expenses in bailing out savings and loan associations that failed during the recession. The large budget surpluses of the late 10s and early 000s are the results of a deficit-reduction package that the Clinton administration and Congress passed. It was a package of higher tax rates and spending limits in place, and with strong economic growth, the annual deficit shrank and the economy continued to expand, so a budget surplus emerged in 18.

. The two main ways the size of the public debt can be measured are GDP and debt. The debt needs only be refinanced rather than refunded. Refinancing the public debt is paying owners of maturing government securities with money obtained by selling new securities or with new securities. Retiring the public debt is reducing the size of the public debt by paying money to owners of maturing U.S government securities. Externally held public debt differs from an internally held public debt in a way that external public debt enables foreigners to buy some of our output. Not like internal public debt that we can own the portion of the debt, the United States transfer goods and services to foreign lenders.

The ownership of the public debt is concentrated among wealthier groups who own a large percentage of all stocks and bonds. Income is transferred from people who have lower incomes to the higher-income bondholders.

The author Maya Angelou employs discerning writing to give a best image of Mrs. Cullinan. As a ten-year-old child living in Virginia, Margaret is employed by a white woman, Mrs. Cullinan. Mrs. Cullinan is the kind of woman who gives into the pressure of her prejudice friends’ remarks. An example of this is when Mrs. Cullinan calls Margaret, Mary because Mrs. Cullinan’s friends tell her she should. Because of this, Margaret purposely breaks one of Mrs. Cullinan dishes.

The White people in the story were ignorant people, towards the Black people, an example is Margaret tells a woman that in Stamps, her grandmother owned the only Negro general merchandise store since the turn of the century, and the woman replies by saying, why you were a debutante. ( Angelou) This to me sounds like the White woman was acting in a sarcastic and rude way towards Margaret. Whites did not have respect towards Black people. Even after Mrs. Cullinan was told numerous times not to call Margaret anything other then her name, she kept calling Margaret, Mary. When Mrs. Cullinan would call Margaret Mary, I believe Margaret felt, as she was dehumanized. No one likes to be called a name that does not correspond to that individual.

Mrs. Cullinan, “was a plump woman who lived in a three bedroom house somewhere behind the post office. She was singularly unattractive until she smiled, and then the lines around her eyes and mouth which made her look perpetually dirty disappeared, and her face looked like the mask of an impish elf.” (0 Angelou) Mrs. Cullinan was a woman who did not know how to respect individuals, she did not understand how important a name is important to a person. Mrs. Cullinan was a woman, who could not have kids because she was delicate boned, in addition she was exceptionally fat.

In Mrs. Cullinan’s house, all the cups and plates had their own place in the cabinets. Approximately around twelve o’clock the table was already set for dinner. Around twelve fifteen p.m. Mrs. Cullinan would take a seat at the dinner table even if her husband had arrived or not. At about twelve sixteen p.m. Miss Glory would bring out the food. Work in the house was exceedingly harsh on Margaret, she always had to be doing some activity in the house. Miss Glory was a descendant of slaves that had worked for the Cullinans. (1 Angelou) Miss Glory and Margaret were almost alike. Miss Glory was very patient with Margaret when she was teaching her about the housework. Miss Glory explained everything that she had to explain to Margaret. So that she would be successful in Mrs. Cullinans’ house and not have any problems with Mrs. Cullinan. Miss Glory and Margaret drinking glasses were placed on a separate shelf from the other glasses.

The point in the story, where I feel the story reaches its climax is when Mrs. Cullinan calls Margaret Mary. A point in which hysteria brakes out in the

Reyes

Household is when Miss Glory is hit on the head by a plate thrown by Mrs. Cullinan. People like Margaret and Miss Glory felt pity sometimes for Mrs. Cullinan, because of all the trouble that she has gone through and her husband not being there anymore. People thought of Miss Glory as a woman who was offensive, chauvinistic, stout, and repulsive. She did not know how to respect other people. The manner in which the china incident occurred was when Mrs. Cullinan insisted in calling Margaret, Mary. This got Margaret very annoyed, so Margaret purposely broke the china plate on the floor, to show Mrs. Cullinan that her name was important to her.

“Character is Destiny”

“My purse, my purse,” screams the lady. As the snatcher disappears, she yells, “this will come back to haunt you.” This I think this relates to what Novalis wrote, “Character is destiny.” Novalis was a pseudonym for Fredrich Von Hardenberg (Novalis pg.1 www.xrefer.com). He was an author of poetry and prose (Novalis pg.1 www.kirjasto.com). This quote “Character is Destiny” can be found in the German book of poems, Heinrich Von Ofterdingen (Novalis pg. 1 www.xrefer.com). It was originally stated, “I now realize that fate and character are the same thing” (Novalis pg.1 www.xrefer.com). It has the same meaning but is stated differently. I think “Character is destiny” applies to modern life. For instance character and destiny mean the same things as they did back then so the quote would still have the same meaning. Another point would be is that a person’s fate will be based directly on their character. This quote can apply to modern times and to literature.

From my research I discovered that Novalis’ writings were spiritually and religiously based (Novalis Pg.1 www.encarta.com). I found that this poem came from an unfinished book of poetry that was about longing for life after death. It was published posthumously (Novalis pg.1 www.encarta.com). Novalis, in my opinion, had a longing for life after death. I think he wanted this because his wife died young and he didn’t have a long time to spend with her. Novalis also died young, at the age of (Novalis pg.1 www.encarta.com). Also at this web site I learned that they both died of tuberculosis. That is why I believe he had a longing for life after death because his one on earth was so short. In other research I did interviews. I interviewed my sister and my mom. My sister had to say, “it means that if you’re a bad person you’ll have a bad life” (Amber interview). I agree with her because it makes sense. If you’re a bad person you should have a bad life. My mom said, “Who you are is what you’ll become” (hers was very similar to my moms but stated differently. The last thing I discovered is that he was educated. He went to three different colleges and only had one finished work (Novalis pg.1 www.encarta.com). It shows that his writing meant a lot to him and that school had been important. He had a good background for writing, and he had probably lived his writings. This quote also applies to literature. For example, it applies in the book Silas Marner.

To show how it links to Silas Marner, a good example is Godfrey Cass, Silas Marner, and Dunstan Cass. Their future was all directly linked to their character, Silas ended up with Eppie, Godfrey loses Eppie, and Dunstan ends up dead. Godfrey lived his life on chance, didn’t take responsibility for his actions, and was spoiled. Godfrey early in the story was childish. He lived his life moment to moment not thinking of the consequences, which was Eppie. He didn’t take responsibility for Eppie, except for financially and this eventually cost him her. Godfrey had messed his life up early maybe because of Dunstan but it didn’t give him any reason to abandon her. He took a chance here that later in life him and Nancy would have their own kids and Eppie wouldn’t really matter. How wrong he was that Nancy ended up not being able to have children and Eppie would be his only one. Chance got him into that mess and chance he depended on getting him out of it. Another thing about Godfrey was that he was spoiled. His dad provided for him and Godfrey was protected. His taste with the real world was scary to him because there was no where to run when his father was gone. He was dependent on himself now. He now had a real problem, his wife couldn’t have children and his father wasn’t there to influence the decision of the jury. He was on his own. He didn’t know responsibility because he had whatever he wanted. And a child was the only thing he couldn’t have. There was no father to give it to him, his irresponsibility had cost him the only one he would have, and chance had killed the one he had. His destiny was one without a child. This was his destiny because this meant something to him, he didn’t live a good life and this was an appropriate punishment or destiny. Silas on the other hand was a good person. He worked hard, was compassionate, and did the right thing. He worked for a living, and his job wasn’t easy. Nothing was given to him and he didn’t have much. He showed compassion towards Eppie because she was nice to him and treated him like a person. He also was helpful to people in desperate times of need. He did the right thing. When Eppie came to his door. He treated her right and was good to her. He provided what he could and knew that the right thing was to keep her and care for her. Which he did, and his reward was Eppie the replacement for all the pain. Having Eppie was his destiny. Dunstan was worse than all of them. He was a horrible person. He stole, he lied, was underhanded and tricky. He was a bad influence on Godfrey. He got him drinking till he was drunk and which was the reason he married Molly. He messed up his life but not beyond repair. He also lied. He would promise something then break it. Such as in the case with the money he borrowed from Godfrey. He promised to pay it back but never did. Another example would be saying he would sell the horse but instead accidentally killing it. He stole. He took the money from Silas’ house. He ran away and died, but not before leaving his mark. He was the bad seed, who wrecked people’s lives. He himself probably wasn’t happy unless others weren’t happy. He made sure this was true because he knew his brother was an easy target. However his character was his destiny, or karma what goes around comes around. He died without anyone, probably painfully, and in a manner that was appropriate for his character.

Write your Charcter is Destiny research paper

In conclusion, persons’ character is their destiny. It is true in modern times, literature, and always. In my opinion I think this was the point Novalis was trying to make. I think he thought that maybe you’ll have a good life and afterlife. No person can know but everyone can speculate. I think that character is destiny is true for everyone, and to quote, “who you are is what you’ll become”(Michelle interview).

“The Importance of Engineering Ethics”

It is critical for an engineer to maintain an ethical reputation within his/her engineering career. The main principles that an engineer should work and live by are “to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public, perform services only in areas of their competence, act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, avoid deceptive acts, and conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession” (NSPE Code of Ethics 1). It is the engineer’s responsibility to uphold his/her position to the fullest in taking everything into account before making a critical decision.

Ethical and moral decisions often have severe consequences. “In a world increasingly shaped by technology, engineers have a moral obligation to consider the consequences of their choices” (Ganssle 1). It is very important for an engineer to use clear judgment when a safety problem is at stake, especially in disaster recovery. When a safety problem is a concern it may be easy to not report it; however, an engineer has an ethical responsibility to report all safety issues even though by doing so, he/she may run the risk of being penalized, fired or blacklisted. The line between ethical, moral standards and circumstances where jobs are at stake becomes very thin. For example, “Engineer A learns that his employer is violating environmental regulations relating to acceptable toxicity levels of waste materials being released by the employer’s industrial facility. Does he report this fact to the public authorities or the media?” (Schwartz 1) In this case due to Section , 1F of the NSPE Code of Ethics which clearly states that “Engineers having knowledge of any alleged violation of this Code shall report thereon to appropriate professional bodies and, when relevant, also to public authorities, and cooperate with the proper authorities in furnishing such information or assistance as may be required,” there should be no question as to what response should be taken.

It is important to develop the moral skills needed to respond well to ethical problems. There is rarely an absolutely correct solution or response to a problem. Even if there is no absolutely correct answer, some answers are better than others. There may be several solutions to one problem. In these cases, judgment and experience must come into play. “As with law and medicine, engineering is a learned profession. As a profession, engineering constantly involves the expert judgment and discretion in the performance of services. Engineers are expected to use their education, training, and experience in a manner that comports with the public health and safety” (Schwartz 1). Being a learned profession, engineering ethics are taught in the classroom to prepare students who lack practical experience to handle situations in the industrial world where ethical decisions have real consequences (Stephan ).

Custom essays on The Importance of Engineering Ethics

Judgment is usually a significant part of the engineer’s decision-making process. “The engineering effort is in knowing what to calculate, and how to model the real world, so that the solution, the real structure, actually performs the way the engineer wants it to. Even the best calculations only substantiate, but do not substitute for the judgment of the structural engineer” (Kardon 5). Codes of ethics set down by regulatory agencies provide for basic rules of conduct that an engineer must follow. They provide guidelines that assist engineers in various situations. “Except in the most basic circumstances, codes of ethics do not provide answers or solutions to ethical dilemmas faced by engineers” (Schwartz ).

Ethical engineering skills are developed from instances of “cases” which occurred over time. Different liability cases and their ultimate outcome have been the basis for educating engineers. Because engineering requires good and reliable judgment, experience is the best educator. Expertise and experience are very important qualifications. In addition to structural concerns, the concerns of the engineer are not unlike the concerns of management limiting losses. However, these concerns must not over shadow the concerns of public welfare and safety. For example, the Brooklyn Bridge is one of America’s most famous bridges. It was the first large suspension bridge and it had many new construction ideas. The design required massive use of structural wire rope. The designer of the bridge, the best wire rope vendor of the day, was not awarded the wire contract. The firm that won the contract “provided knowingly and with almost criminal intent, substandard material that could have jeopardized the safety of thousands of commuters. The original bridge designer’s sensationally redundant design saved the project. The history of civil engineering is filled with stories of crooked contractors and lousy materials. In pursuit of the quick buck, ethics are consistently tossed to the winds” (Ganssle 4).

“Construction is a dangerous pastime, and builders sometimes take undue risks in order to save time or money” (Kardon 8). The engineer must consider the consequences of the risks taken under the worst circumstances. In business situations, profitability is always of the utmost importance. Although costs should not be ignored, much consideration should be given to safety, honesty, integrity and experience. Let’s face it, we all know but don’t care to admit that we are lazy. We tend to take the easy way out rather than do it right. “Disciplined development is a core value of any workable approach…but it’s tedious and, well, disciplined” (Ganssle 5). The ethical engineer should never compromise his/her standards by misrepresenting, concealing or ignoring a potential problem. “The law of unintended consequences means we cannot understand the implications of our actions over the long haul” (Ganssle ).

“All ethics are personal” (Ganssle ). Most responsible engineers try to do their job as ethically as possible. However, engineering in today’s world has become complex. Good intentions might not always be enough. Often the pressures of deadlines, profitability, time management, and competition cause great stress on engineers. It is easy to overlook minute details. In some cases these small details can be significant in the failure of a project. It is important for engineers to accept personal responsibility for their professional activities.

Years ago in engineering shops one person may have been the designer, business manager, salesperson, and service manager. Today, things are a little bit more complicated. There are many individuals and departments in the same firm or corporation that play different roles. “Issues of safety, liability, and business integrity can easily get lost even when all individuals are doing there assigned jobs” (Stephan ). Under these circumstances, it is more likely for engineers to rely on his/her peers to identify problems or shed light on a safety concern, in which case many issues will fall through the cracks. However, if the entire firm takes personal responsibility in each project the success rate will be higher.

In conclusion, the actions involved with carrying out the right and ethical solution to any engineering problem may not be easy, especially is today’s world. But the path that must be taken should be obvious. This type of decision-making comes with experience, but the basic principles can be learned. The work that an engineer does often impacts the lives of countless people. With such a responsibility it is up to them to act in the most ethical, honest and trustworthy manner possible.

Tree Near the Water

My life changed this September, I moved to the USA. Just when I thought I had a grip of my life; apartment, work, social life, the 1st of January arrived and spring semester started. All the so-called balance I have achieved had to change; my weekly rituals were no longer weekly but daily.

Constant change, flexibility of the brain, is an essential requirement to cope with college life.

I still work every day from nine to five, after an hour on the bus I get home and cook some dinner, organize the house, and give some attention to my boyfriend.

Order Custom COPMERISON paper

Weekends I work at a bar in Bucktown.

My highlight of the week happens Monday evening; I go to yoga class. This activity fills me with energy in calm mind, which allows my to concentrate in my work.

College life took the toll of my social life, I love going out to clubs, bars, and lounges. Chicago offers a huge variety of activities to nightlife lovers. However since I started school I cannot attend as many events as I used to. I can’t afford to sleep the next day and recuperate from drinking alcohol, as I would like to.

I need my alertness and brain functioning as best as can be, in order to write essays and the rest of my homework.

Financially I have a big burden since I started attending college, I reduced the shifts bartending over the weekend, and the college expenses are high.

I must be aware from unnecessary expenses and save my penny.

Not only my life changed since I started college, my boyfriend’s life had to change as well. At school nights, he must turn the TV off at midnight, when I have a paper to write he needs to vanish from my sight or else it can be dangerous (I tend to be edgy). He participates in the house chores as needed and it’s needed a lot!

Yoga is about physical strength and flexibility. The philosophy talks about the body-mind connection. My teacher tried to demonstrate this theory by positioning the class in a pose named “the tree”. When we stood with our eyes closed he talked about a tree next to the water, its roots are very strong into the ground, however the body itself is very flexible. When the wind blows the tree won’t break, the roots will keep it grounded and the body will bend as necessary.

I try to use this knowledge, in my daily life, in college life especially. It takes a lot of strength to be able to handle as much work as I do, to coop with all the mental stress and the painful learning process, and above all being able to enjoy the process.

I give a lot of credit to yoga; it showed me how to look at changes in a positive way and flow with them, without breaking.

Is the Best Family the Typical American Family? Do we live in a world with no problems? Everyone’s attitude and the way they live life and treat others originates from the way they were brought up. Some people had both parents, some lived in a single parent families, and there were unfortunate peoples.

The oldest of all the societies and natural is the family. Again the kids never stay dependant of their parents as long as they need them to conserve themselves. The kids give respect that they should to their parent and their parents give them back the needs that they should. If we continue to stay join, it is not naturally anymore, it is voluntary, and the family itself never be a family without a convention. So the family is the first model of political societies. The president is image of the father and the nation is the image of the kids; and each been born equal and free. The only difference is that in the family, the father’s love for his kids pay the needs which he gives to them, and in one country, the pleasure to order as the love the president does not have for his nation.

Born and raised in West Africa in a big family of seven children, I realized as I grown up that anybody living in the same house is consider as a member of the family. In my families there were some rules made by my parents that were to consider our maids, cousins, friends, and others parents as brothers, sisters, aunts or uncles. These rules were anywhere you go in my country. To my parents, recognizing someone as your family member was something really everyone cannot effort. I thank god for giving me a family that every person wish to have. There was a time in my family when my Dad lost his job and his businesses were not going well, so my mother has to take over the family financially. My mom was paying for everything (foods, clothes, gas for car), anything that was our necessities. She never gives up on our Dad, or us even though our daddy was the one who supposed to take care of the family. I bring this issue concerning my family because our author said “what happen when a woman can make her own living, passing on property, skills and status? Shouldn’t, then, a mother be able to assign another woman as her child’s sociological “father”?”(E.J Graff 7). I believe in her statement, I agree that a mother be able to assign another woman as her child’s sociological “father” basing on what my mom were doing while my Dad were lay off; she showed that women are also capable to play men’s role in our society. If that were some other family the parents might end up divorcing. But my parents were not worrying about a thing. All they wanted were we to have good education, respect others parents as we respect them. My parents really showed us how to family is made up of. They always wanted us to take care of each other, always be there when needing. I can tell, we their kids have done that. My brother, now who got a good paying job is taking care of us even though my Dad got his own business. My brother is really showing me how much he loves us, which the family is made up of.

As I remember, one day I was have a big discussion with my brother, and at the end of the discussion, he told me one thing that I will never forget about. He told me how much he loves me, my sisters, my brother and my parents; and he is willing to die anywhere we die. My brother is really showing a good example of family. I want to be like my brother, be there for my family when or wherever needing or not. I really want to give something to my wife and kids, something that my family gave to me, which is love and caring for each other. As E.J Graff said in our text, “not love, not biology, but labor made a family”(8). She used this statement to approach the conflict of parenting, no matter being an adoptive or biological parents, the most important is the family is made of a society not with two or dozen people but with people whose care about you, listen and believe in you. Another conflict in family issue is the word “Work”. As I know in most parts in the world, the man has to work and the woman has to stay home, take care of the kid, which is the case in my country. But this issue was some way contradictory in United States. Most of the married couple in United States believes that a marriage should be fifty fifty; which mean if the husband is working and take care of the family, the wife should too. As our author Danielle Crittenden said “very few women would be willing to return to marriages in which the wives confines themselves largely to home and family while their husbands go to work”(6). I think her comment is really very important because the cause of the higher divorce rate in United States is because most of the couples don’t practice this technique. If the wives were to stay home and confine themselves to family and the husbands go to work; believe me we will not even discuss the divorce rate in United States. Sometimes parents’ divorce plays a big role in a child life, some children even commit suicide because they cannot live with. Us, the children always think we had some to do with our parents divorce. When some parents end up divorcing, the custody of the child really becomes a big issue, and the child will be stuck in middle wishing his/her parents getting back together. Every kid wish is to grow up with both of his/her parents.

Bay of Pigs Invasion

The Bay of Pigs Invasion on April 17, 161 was a major disaster and embarrassment for the United States. It all started with the fear of a communist lead country only 0 miles away from United States soil. Reports say that the Central Intelligence Agency knew the invasion was doomed, but never notified President Kennedy about their thought, or what was really going on. Instead they went on with the plans. The plan was to overthrow the communist government and install a Democratic government, much like we did in Guatemala. This would also re-assure every one of our power and stance in the Cold War.

The invasion was not well planned under any means. U.S. officials who had planned the invasion underestimated the Cuban Army. In the end, nearly 400 Cuban soldiers who were trained by the United States military were killed, and 1,00 were kept as prisoners. It took the Cuban army less than 7 hours to crush the invasion. Reports say that they were expecting the Cuban army to turn against their leader Castro and the Communist driven government. However, nothing of that sort happened. The landing spot for the invasion was horrible also. Since it was Castro’s favorite fishing spot, he knew the area well. The area was also very swampy and not very populated. Therefore there were no citizens to help the U.S. turn against the Communist government.

The invasion backfired on the United States in the worst way. The new, young president Kennedy was appointed to blame for the failure. He was very embarrassed, as well was the entire country. However, Richard Bissell is the real man who should be held responsible for the failure. As director of the CIA he was the man in charge of the operation. In 1 the Cubans sued the United States Government for $181 billion in damages they say were suffered in the invasion.

The narrators in Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem, Richard Cory,” are a few people who are standing near Cory as he walks down the street. They are going about their business when Richard Cory walks within visual range and is immediately discussed by the narrators. The town in which the story takes place in is essentially small. This sort of scenario would never take place in a larger city simply because there would be several people like Richard Cory, not just one. The people describe Cory as a very important man who is above anything petty, nearly regal. They find Cory to be everything they are not, and everything they desire to be. Richard Cory is a marvelous man who seems to be too good to be true.

The first two lines of the poem suggest Richard Cory’s separation from the ordinary folk who are telling the story. Richard Cory’s presence on the street demands attention as soon as he is noticed. Just by looking at him, a person can tell that he is above everything else around him. The people describe themselves as just people on the pavement” (51) as though Richard Cory is using some other means of transportation other than walking. Cory glittered when he walked” (51) which looked to them as if he wasn’t walking at all, just merely gliding to his destination while they view themselves as trudging up and down the same pavement on the way to their meaningless jobs.

The next two lines tell what it is in his natural appearance that sets him off from everyone else around him. Cory is described as quietly arrayed, always human” (51) which really makes him different from most people because he is a simple man who only speaks with meaning. A large majority of people speak, it seems, simply because they desire to hear the sound of their voice or they have nothing else to say. Richard Cory is obviously not one of these people. Whenever Richard Cory spoke, he did it for a purpose, or he didn’t speak. Consequently, people respected him and it shows in the way the townspeople describe him and behave when they are in his presence. Chances are good that Cory didn’t have many friends in this small community because most of the townsfolk were far too in awe of him to be his friend. There was a sense of Cory’s eventual downfall during these first three stanzas because everything Cory did, seemed to be too good. There is no possible way a normal human could carry himself so perfectly that it would draw the uninterrupted attention of everyone around him. The people telling the story acted as if an alarm had gone off and their idol was passing them by as soon as he was noticed.

The following two lines in Robinson’s poem mention Cory’s demeanor which elevates him even more over his fellow citizens. Cory apparently resembles a man who has no vanity and it appears that he does not desire to be in the spotlight of the town because he is very quiet, almost unsure of whether he deserves such recognition. Cory obviously knows that he is something special, yet he does not desire to be elevated to that level. Cory is also described more completely in the the third line of the third stanza as the people think that he was everything, To make us wish that we were in his place.” (51) This says quite a bit for the man that Richard Cory was. It is very difficult to find a man so perfect, that people standing on the street observing him do not mention a single flaw. This would be especially true in Cory’s situation living in a small town where one would be almost certain to have one minor flaw worth describing. He is obviously a very humble man, almost too good to be true.

Custom writing service can write essays on Richard Cory

The third stanza further describes the type of man Cory is and why the people who reside in his town think so highly of him. Cory is richer than a king and admirably schooled in every grace.” (51) The people want to be in his place. They think that he has everything, that nothing more would ever possibly be obtained from his wonderful life. Then, a single bullet shook the town and ruined the mindsets of the townspeople forever. Their superman, who never did a single thing wrong, had done the unthinkable.

The eventual suicide which takes place at the end of the poem in the fourth stanza is not, or should not be, a surprise. The eventual demise of Cory’s psyche was expected at the end of the poem, he just couldn’t be as perfect as what was described. There had to be something wrong. The townspeople simply assume that what he has going for him in life, would make anyone happy. People are not always what they seem. An extremely wealthy man who was admired and envied by those who knew him little and consider themselves less fortunate, commits suicide. As soon as the last two lines are read, And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head,” (51) the people telling the story are immediately elevated. The entire poem up until that point their description of Richard Cory’s great life, and how rotten their lives had become. After the smoke clears from the barrel, those people’s lives don’t seem so bad. Richard Cory’s entire life seemed entirely too good to be true, and it was.

A period in Japanese art history from 1600 to 1868 was called the Edo period. Edo is the original name for Tokyo (http//www.artlex.com/ArtLex/e/edo.html). This period began when the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu took control of Japan in 1600 and succeeded in bringing peace and stability to Japan, both economically and politically. He then established his shogunate capital and started shaping the country to his will. As people became more and more wealthy under its regime, they began to take control of cultural activities. There were strict laws in Edo that kept close tabs on who could own and wear what. Among the wealthy, there was lots of competition with regards to luxury and as a result produced extraordinary art. This extravagance was referred to as the Ukiyo (“The floating world”) (http//www.monks.demon.co.uk/hocus.htm). Japanese art of this period was called the Ukiyo-e, and included painted screens, samurai swords, ceramics, theater costume, Buddhist sculptures, woodcuts, and much more (http//www.monks.demon.co.uk/hocus.htm).

In the early years of the Edo period, however, the full impact of Tokugawa policies had not yet been felt, and some of Japans finest works of architecture and painting were produced Katsura Palace in Kyoto and the paintings of Sotatsu were two renown arts of the time . Katsura, built in imitation of Prince Genjis palace, contains a cluster of shoin buildings that combine elements of classic Japanese architecture with innovative additions (http//www.oir.ucf.edu/wm/paint/tl/japan/edo.html). The whole complex is surrounded by a beautiful garden with paths for walking. Sotatsu evolved a superb decorative style by re-creating themes from classical literature, using vividly colored figures and motifs from the natural world with gold-leaf backgrounds. One of his finest works is a pair of screens, The Waves at Matsushima, which is located at the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Another Japanese painter, also a wood graver, born during the Edo period was Katsushika Hokusai (1760 - 184) (http//www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/hokusai/). He is considered one of the most influential characters of the Ukiyo-e school of printmaking. Hokusai learned the popular technique of woodcut printmaking in 1775 from countrymen Katsukawa Shunsho. Between 176 and 180 he produced a vast number of book illustrations and color prints, conceivably as many as 0,000, that stemmed from the traditions, legends, and lives of the Japanese people. Hokusais most typical wood-block prints, silk screens, and landscape paintings were done between 180 and 1840. One of his most famous silk screens is called The Great Wave of Kanagawa (shown below) (http//www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/hokusai/).

Since the birth of television, the industry has been creating multiple shows and movies to keep us Americans entertained while doing nothing but sitting on our comfortable couch and observing a box. These shows and movies consist anywhere from children education programs to comedy with a little science fiction. Today, many Americans are raising issues saying that television is a waste of time and is too graphic. Are we being realistic? Are we to tell artists to stop painting too graphic and that it’s a waste of time? Television is like art, it is never ending. Each American pursues their own taste and style. Television is where we visually see the different varieties of style. Whether someone wants to watch a horror film or “Entertainment Tonight” is his or her choice. Through one’s perception, television may be observed as a positive influence.

Television may posses a positive influence in a matter of enhancing our personal status. Our personal appearance is one of the most important traits. Judging an individual by their appearance can tell a lot about a person’s character. When we watch television, we notice that every person’s appearance is perfect. For some of us, we pay attention to the big movie stars. The first words that come to mind when I think of movie stars are “famous and beautiful.” The clothes are always expensive looking and very classy. Their face always has perfect skin complexion with no acme whatsoever. They each have their own unique hairstyle that someday we dream of having. We admire these movie stars so much that we try to look like them, dress like them, and even talk like them. I remember watching “Conan the Barbarian” when I was younger. Arnold Schwartzenegger had a body like a tank. His appearance was one of no other, pure barbaric. I wanted to be just like Arnold, having the same physical physique. Arnold’s presence provided me with so much motivation that I joined a gym near my house and started training instantly. To this day, I am still training due to the appearance of Arnold Schwartzenegger. Advertisements may have a positive effect on our personal status as well. Observing all the expensive cars and real estate ads advertised on television might get you thinking twice about saving your money. Ever been to Hawaii? Well watch a commercial for a trip to Hawaii and you are destined to go there. Advertisements get your mind thinking positive and help us budget our money. The fact is we look up to people on television and their possessions. We want what they want. Television provides us with modeled images we dream of resembling someday.

Stories from movies and shows on television alone have a positive effect on our actions and behavior. Writers have created imaginative stories where we can escape into the writer’s own constructed world. A perfect example is the movie “Rudy.” The movie is based on a typical teenager who, since a child, had always wanted to play football for Notre Dame. His friends and family told him that he was too stupid and that he couldn’t even get into college, let alone play football. Rudy took all the negative energy and used it to work even harder. To make it short and sweet, Rudy ended up inviting his friends and family to his first appearance in a Notre Dame football game. After watching the movie, a feeling of pride overwhelmed my soul. Knowing that this movie was based on a true story almost left me in tears. From a personal standpoint, the story line in the movie “Rudy” captured a lot of what growing up was like for me. I had a lot of people around telling me that I couldn’t make it, just like in Rudy’s case. I felt myself falling into the shoes of the character, sharing the same traits. Many stories that are told on television can be related to real situations we come across daily. Another example is the sitcom “Seinfeld.” The sitcom is about nothing and it’s hilarious. It’s watching your average person and his friends doing nothing. Is that weird? Well no. The show contains your everyday problems like your friends bugging you, or waiting a half-hour to get a table at a Chinese restaurant. We are entertained by watching others deal with the same situations we come across. It makes us laugh when the Soup Nazi says, “No soup for you,” or Kramer comes stumbling into Jerry’s apartment acting like a klutz. Television provides us with stories that have a positive impact on our daily life.

Children programs on television portray a positive attitude and expand a child’s horizons. The benefit of television for children is endless. From advertisements to cartoons, a child’s imagination can run wild. Children love to see different advertisements ranging from GI-Joe figures to fast cars. They are always interested in what’s out, what’s coming out, and if they can have it. What do children really love the most? Children love cartoons. Cartoons are the gateway to the imagination for a child. I remember when I was a child, all I wanted to do was watch cartoons and then draw cartoons. Television provided me with the imagination that I could create anything. I could draw a chair and make it have a face and dance. I could draw a monkey and dress him as a businessman. There were no ends to the possibilities. Television can be very educational for children too. If your child is getting ready to go into Kindergarden, the television provides many programs and ads that will prepare your child for school. Programs such as “Sesame Street” and “Hooked on Phonix” have proved to help enhance a child’s ability to learn. Television provides continuous education and entertainment for children.

Television is like an artist’s canvas, anything can come to mind. When we try to put limits on graphics and behavior, we are generally stopping our imagination at work, resulting in boredom. As Americans, we are always constantly wanting to change for the better. Television portrays every kind of positive image that we would like to model someday. We have the choice to watch whatever show or movie we’d like on television. Those choices may have a positive effect, or they may have a negative effect. It’s whether we want to posses a positive outlook that makes the difference.

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed that he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, the man noticed two sets of footprints in the sand one belonging to him, the other to the LORD. When the last scene of his life passed before him, the man looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This disturbed him, and he asked the LORD about it. LORD, you said that if I followed you, youd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I dont understand why you would leave me when I needed you most. My precious, precious child, the LORD replied, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you only saw one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

The above parable was written by an unknown author. That story was printed on the back of a book mark I received for Christmas two years ago. It is special to me because I received it at a time when I was going through a stage of denial of living with juvenile diabetes.

I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in 10. That was nearly 8 years ago, but every day I am constantly aware of the new challenges my disease brings. Diabetes is a metabolic disease which affects the levels of sugar in an individuals bloodstream. In order to control the disease a diabetic must test the average milligrams/deciliter of sugar in the blood daily, inject insulin before every meal, and maintain a regular exercise regimen.

In November of 16, my doctor approached me about switching to one of the new designer insulin programs that had come out. Instead of injecting twice a day, as I was used to, this new program would have me injecting every time I decided to eat. After the switch in November, I had trouble adjusting my body to this new therapy. In the first few months of the program, it took me awhile to catch on to the right methods of increasing and decreasing the dosage because I was treating this new regimen like my old one. I began to discover that this new program gave me so much more freedom of what and when I could eat. Previously I had had to follow a scheduled diet with a set amount of food, and my eating habits were so precise that it was really hard for me to ever miss a meal or a snack. At the same time as I was dealing with this drastic switch in my insulin regimen, my world was becoming much more chaotic than it ever had been before. I was learning the freedom of having a drivers license, the stress of teenage relationships, and the abandon of a 100 oclock curfew.

Buy Life Lessons from a Diabetic term paper

These factors led to an overwhelming period in my life. The time was characterized by over-indulgence, massive doses of insulin, fear of public injection, and a dependance upon insulin and blood monitoring which I had never felt before. The outcome of this new lifestyle was one that I was not happy with. Physically and mentally my body began to show signs of my irresponsibility. I gained nearly twenty pounds and my self-esteem had taken a plunge. Never before, and never again, has my disease taken such control over my life.

I have since learned that with freedom comes responsibility. I am becoming an adult now and can no longer hide under the shadow of my parents protective wing. I have been able to appreciate life more fully because of the phase I went through of denying my disease and my body the proper care they deserved. I have learned to value moderation and control. I know now that the cliche Too much of a good thing is a lesson that should be taken to heart. In high school, many of my peers have decided to experiment with drinking and other uncontrolled substances. Many have proven that they cannot handle the responsibility it takes to be able to drink, and they end up losing control of themselves and their actions. I want to be the one in control of my body. My experience has taught me to appreciate the fact that sometimes you must display a higher level of maturity and self-respect rather than giving in to temptation.

Once again, I am running cross-country, and have found that running is the greatest key in controlling my blood sugars. My running is one of the most important and therapeutic aspects of my life. Previously, I ran in order to win races, but now I am just happy that I am fit enough to run. Before my experience I was afraid of the affects running would have on my blood sugar. Now, I have come to fully appreciate the people, health benefits, and atmosphere that are indicative of being a runner.

By facing my adversity, I have learned what it means to have faith and perseverance. To have faith when things seem hopeless is often times the difference of surviving the challenges set before you or of giving up. I have learned perseverance from my experience and have tried to do my best in all aspects of life whether it is from school, sports, or relationships. I am very proud of the seventh grade confirmation class I taught. I tried to have a positive impact on their lives and their faith.

I stated earlier that I was afraid of injecting myself in public. I have overcome that fear and have learned an important lesson That lesson is Above all things, be true to yourself. As long as I am happy with my character and my integrity the rest of the problems I face in life will be a piece of cake. I have learned to be independent, and to trust my own judgement. It is not necessary for me to go along with the group just for the sake of belonging because I am independent enough to determine what is best for me.

Dealing with diabetes is an adversity I will have the rest of my life. It isnt always easy, but it has made me who I am today. I have become a person with strong convictions and opinions, and Im happy with that. My disease has been a major factor in my life, but it has also taught me perserverance, self-reliance, and the value of a positive attitude. My father told me that to reach the top of the mountain you first have to cross the valleys along the way. No matter what valleys I face in my lifetime I know I have been provided with a good pair of boots for my hike to the top of the mountain.

Genetically engineered foods have been a very controversial subject for many years. I think the new GMOs are more harmful than they are helpful. They pose many health risks to humans. They also greatly threaten the environment and some butterflies. There are many unknown effects of the crops, and there are economic concerns. Bioengineers think that the GMOs can help in many ways. They can be engineered to have pest, herbicide, disease, cold, and drought resistance. Nutrition and pharmaceuticals can also be added to the crops. There might even be a solution to end world hunger, but the potential damage it can do still outweighs the benefits.

Genetically modified organisms refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques. These plants have been modified to enhance desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides and pests. Growing GM foods such as B.t. corn can help eliminate the application of chemical pesticides, but consumers do not wish to eat food that has been treated with pesticides because of potential health hazards. Crop plants genetically engineered to be resistant to one very powerful parasite could help prevent environmental damage by reducing the amount of herbicides needed (Whitman). These crops could greatly help the environment.

Some crops are also engineered to resist cold and drought. An antifreeze gene has been introduced into plants such as tobacco and potato. These plants are able to tolerate cold temperatures that normally would kill unmodified seedlings. Creating plants that can withstand

long periods of drought or high salt content and soil and groundwater will help people to grow crops in formerly inhospitable places (Whitman). These crops would help out many of the third world countries that are suffering from hunger.

Crops can also be engineered to contain more nutrition and pharmaceuticals. Rice does not contain adequate amounts of all necessary nutrients to prevent malnutrition. If rice could be genetically engineered to contain additional vitamins and minerals, nutrient deficiencies could be alleviated. Blindness due to vitamin A deficiency is a common problem in third world countries. “Golden” rice containing an unusually high content of vitamin A could help this problem. Researchers are working to develop edible vaccines in tomatoes and potatoes (Whitman). These plants would save many lives in poor countries if they work like they are expected to.

These GMOs can also be used to help put an end to world hunger. Besides boosting the nutritional content of food, researchers are developing crops that can be grown in arid countries or in regions with poor soil. Some seeds could produce drought-resistant, salt-resistant, and heat-resistant crops that can be grown in the third world countries. Consumer and environmental groups say poverty causes hunger in developing countries and that new types of crops will do little to relieve the situation unless poor farmers can pay for them. The idea of using biotechnology to feed starving people has come to the fore recently because the industry is trying to win over U. S. and European skeptics. Biotech opponents believe that developing countries should place a greater emphasis on inexpensive, traditional agricultural techniques- like rotating crops to enrich the soil- instead of using potentially costly technology that could pose environmental risks (Hosansky 56). Even if crops were engineered for third world countries the

countries would not have enough money to buy the seeds.

Genetically engineered foods have not been tested enough to be put on the market yet. Nearly two-thirds of the products on our supermarket shelves contain genetically engineered ingredients. GE foods remain poorly studied; scientists simply cannot say with any authority that they are absolutely safe for human consumption. Many scientists believe that GE foods have been rushed too quickly to the market before adequate testing has been completed to ensure public health. Scientific bodies say that there was insufficient research into the potential allergic effects and toxicity of genetically engineered foods. Gm foods could cause serious risks to human health (TheCampaign.org). GE food companies should wait until they know if the GE food is safe for them to put it on the supermarket shelves.

Genetically engineered food may trigger harmful allergies in people. Genetic engineering may involve the transfer of new and unidentified proteins from one food and into another, with the potential of setting off allergic reactions. The allergies can potentially result in life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Without labeling people with allergies will not know if they are eating foods that contain genes from other foods to which they are allergic. In 16, scientists were stunned to discover that soybeans engineered to include protein-rich genes from the Brazil nut also contained the allergenic properties of the Brazil nut. Scientists have also discovered that B.t., a bacterium that has been spliced into millions of acres of corn, potatoes, and cotton, may produce allergies in people (TheCampaign.org). Much more extensive testing is required to ensure that those who suffer from allergies will not be affected by these foods.

Genetic engineering may create new toxins harmful to human health. Scientist say genetic

Quagliata 4

engineering may produce new toxins, with potentially devastating results for humans. In at least one case, disaster has already happened. In 18, a genetically engineered version of tryptophan, a dietary supplement, produced toxic contaminants. Before it was recalled by the Food and Drug Administration, the mutated tryptophan wreaked havoc. Thirty-seven Americans died, 1,500 were permanently disabled, and 5,000 became ill with a blood disorder, eosinophila myalgia syndrome (TheCampaign.org). These peoples’ lives are more important than genetic engineering.

Genetic engineering may be linked with a resurgence of infectious diseases. Infectious diseases were responsible for one-third of the 5 million deaths from all causes in 15. Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is now estimated to affect 10 million each year with million deaths. At least 50 new viruses attacking humans emerged between 188 and 16. Toxic shock syndrome is now invulnerable to all known antibiotics (TheCampaign.org). New diseases will keep coming if genetic engineering is not stopped or corrected.

Genetic engineering can do much harm to the environment. Some of the companies that boast that genetic engineering can do wonders for the environment are the same ones that have invented such deadly pesticides such as DDT and Agent Orange. These pesticides, it was promised, would help the environment; instead, they turned into environmental disasters. GE corn may be deadly to the Monarch butterfly. Half of Monarch caterpillars that are milkweed leaves dusted with GE corn pollen dies within four days. The surviving Monarchs that ate the genetically mutated corn pollen were much smaller and had smaller appetites than the control Monarchs, which ate normal corn pollen or no pollen at all. Already, GE corn is being grown on 0 million acres of American farmland, right in the heart of Monarch’s migratory route between

Quagliata 5

Mexico and Canada (TheCampaign.org). If Monarchs keep dying at this rate, they will be extinct in a number of years.

Genetic engineering can contaminate the environment. We should be extremely concerned about genetically modified fish because of the danger that they could escape into the wild. If a GM fish escaped or was released accidentally in to the wild it could never be recaptured. This fish could breed with wild populations and devastate the existing natural balance with its modified behavior. Scientists fear the GMOs will be spread, by bird, insect or wind, to non-GE crops and to the wilderness, and unlike other kinds of waste, genetic contamination cannot be cleaned up, or contained (TheCampaign.org). If GMOs are spread by animals the environment will suffer much damage.

GE food companies boast about all the benefits of genetically engineered food, but they do not say much about the hazards of it. GE food uses less pesticides, which helps the environment, but it also does more damage to it. GE foods may have a few benefits, but when u look at the big picture there are much more hazards than benefits. If GE food companies have all this technology they should be able to make food that does not harm the environment or people. It would be better to just grow crops the original way and not risk thousands of peoples’ lives instead of risking all their lives for a few benefits. I definitely think that the genetic engineering of foods should be stopped.

How can soccer be important to me in the present? For example soccer can be important to me because it is one of the sports that requires running. And i really need to lose weight by running. Also, because all my brothers play soccer too. Another reason why soccer is important to me is because my father is very cool with me, when i tell him that i am goin to play soccer. He drives me to every game. The last reason why soccer means a lot for me is because i really enjoy playing soccer. Next i am foin to talk about my personal story.

One of my favorite stories about soccer was when i was playing at the high school. We played 16 games in the league. Only one of the games that we played was lost, 15 of them we won them with very good scores. And the special moment playing with the team was when we went to the playoffs. We were supposed to play with the only team that beat us during the league. Thats why the coach was so nervous to play the game, because he thought that we were going to lose the game. Finally we did not play with the team that beat us. And the big surprise was that the team that we beat was more aggressive than the last time, and we were losing with the worst team in the league. I was on the bench when the coach called my name. He gave me some instruction and i went into the field and i scored the only goal in the game for us and that is why this situation was very special for me. In conclusion, when you really enjoy doing something you have to put in a lot of effort of your part. If you can do that you can be successful in your life. Finally soccer is the best sport in all the world, thats my personal opinion

While the boys are sneaking away, Huck trips over a root and makes noise when he falls. Miss Watsons slave Jim hears the sound and comes outside to look around. Jim sits down right between where Huck and Tom are hiding and decides to wait until he catches them. However, he soon gets tired and falls asleep against a tree.

Tom then wants to play a trick on Jim. He and Huck climb into the house and steal three candles, for which they leaves a nickel as pay. Then Tom quietly makes his way to Jim, takes off Jims hat, and places it on a tree branch above Jims head. He soon returns and tells Huck what he did.

After Jim woke up he thought he had been bewitched, and he always kept the nickel as a token around his neck after that. According to Huck, Jim used to tell all the other slaves that he had been ridden around the world by some witches, and that the nickel was given to him as a token by the devil.

Tom and Huck sneak down to the river and meet some of the other boys who are supposed to be members of Toms robber band. Together they steal a skiff and float down the river several miles to a spot with a cave. Tom shows the boys a hidden room in the cave which they make their robber headquarters.

Tom then reads them an oath that he has written, taken mostly from robber books and pirate stories. The boys argue over what Huck Finns role in the gang will be, because Huck does not have a family for them to kill in case he reveals any of the gangs secrets. Huck finally offers them Miss Watson in place of his real parents, and the boys then sign an oath in blood to join the band. Tom is elected the captain.

Tom explains that as robbers, they will only attack carriages and take the stuff inside. The men will be killed and the women will be brought back to the cave. He also mentions that they will ransom some of the people, because that is what they do in books, although he has no idea what ransom means. After that, all the boys agree to meet again soon. They return home exhausted and Huck climbs into bed having muddied up his new clothes, and feeling dead tired

China’s “Three Gorges” Dam

Being built along China’s Yangtze River is the Three Gorges hydroelectric dam. It is heralded as the world’s largest hydro-electric project and is said to be completed by 00. Some Chinese are calling it the “modern Great Wall”. This dam will be 185 metres high and will have a kilometer concrete wall stretching across the world’s third largest river. It is now beginning to fill a reservoir that will be 1.1 kilometers wide and 600 kilometers long. It will be able to fill 40 billion cubic metres of water. The Three Gorges which it currently includes, are the Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and the Xiling Gorge. The reason behind the construction of the Three Gorges is to provide China with inexpensive energy to support and strengthen its economic and social development. The dams will have two power stations that are expected to operate 6 of the world’s largest turbine generators. The total generating capacity of the dam will be 18 00 megawatts which is the same as the energy produced by 18 nuclear power stations or by 40 million tones of coal.

Just like every issue in the world, there are positives and negatives. One of the positives to the Three Gorges is that by controlling the flow of the Yangtze River, the dam will be able to let ship to navigate these rough waters more effectively. It will also expand the amount of shipping along this central part of the river by 10 million tonnes to 50 million tonnes annually, while bringing down shipping costs by 0 to 7 percent. This dam will also help control the frequency of floods, from once every ten years to once every 100 years. Supporters of the Three Gorges also have their opinions as to why it is positive. They say that controlling the flow of water, the lives of over 15 million people downstream will be protected, since there will be hardly any threats of floods. They say that this project is to provide China with large amounts of hydro electric power so that they will no longer rely on power from coal. This is very good because using coal damages the environment. One of the negatives to the Three Gorges is that it is expected to flood 8 400 hectares of fertile valley farmland. The people that use to live along the Yangtze River had to be moved to sites that are built on 5 degree slopes. This makes it very difficult for them to farm and to develop a community. Others had to be settled much further like in Shanghai and Xinjiang. Which are provinces in the northwest of China. Now these people will need new jobs or high quality farmland to make a living. Another negative of the Three Gorges Dam project is that it will change the river ecosystem for fish and wildlife. It may also be a threat to endangered species such as the Chinese sturgeon, the Chinese tiger, the Yangtze dolphin and the giant panda.

Along with the positives and negatives to the Three Gorges there are also the social, environmental and economical implications. The social aspect is that the Three Gorges reservoir will flood an area of 6 square kilometers, which will impact 65 townships in 1 cities, districts or countries in Sinchuan and Hebei Provinces. The dam is estimated to displace 1 million to million people as “reservoir refugees” There has been poor resettlement attempts, inadequate resettlement attempts and lack of consultation with resettled people. For the environment flooding will cover more than 1000 factories, hundreds of tourist and cultural sites and ancient temples and monuments. As well more than 50 types of pollutants from human and industrial waste that are dumped into the lake will not be washed away. Economically this dam project is very expensive. The estimate of the cost for completing the construction is 5 billion US. This results in moving money from other programs as well threatening China’s economic stability.

Overall the sustainability of this resource use has its good and bad. Many can argue and say it is a positive aspect being added to China and others can say it is a negative aspect to China. I do not believe this resource is being manages to the best of it’s ability because as soon as you are risking the lives of the people in the country and life of living you need to stop and realise the dangers of this. It may help one problem but may begin another. My main suggestions are to make sure that the people being relocated and satisfied and not in any danger. As well to make sure that they are not causing major environmental problems or allowing these problems to arise.

Love and hate exist in many different areas in life. It exists in marriage, the bond between a man and a woman, that is recognized by some type of religion. There also is a love and hate within the religious community, with humans and their greater God. The love and hate that refer to a marriage is the actual feelings that they have for their spouse, whereas the love and hate in religion is a metaphor. . In Robert Frosts’ nine line poem, ‘Fire and Ice’, he speaks about the world ending in fire and ice. The initial thought of fire and ice was the passion and desire that two people have for and each other and the ice referring to the bitter and hate filled ending of a relationship. But Frost begins the poem with “Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice,” I believe he is using the fire and ice as a metaphor to the end of the world as the Bible tells it. In the Old Testament, God sees that the people whom he had created were disobeying his law and to punish them, he would flood the world. God told Noah of the fate of the people and gave him instructions on assembling a male and female of each animal species and build a boat. It rained for forty days and forty nights, the rain and flooding water being a metaphor to ice. In the book of Revelations, God said that if people continued to sin and worship false gods, he would come again and end the world in fire. This completes the religious metaphor with the ice being in the form of rain and Gods threat to end the world in fire. In lines three and four when he says “From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire”, I think when Frost says desire, he speaks of the actions that go against Gods law; actions that would bring the fire because in the next line he says “...if it had to perish...”(Frost 1110). Perish relates to death and is used in a negative way. I also think Frost is presenting a question to his audience at this time. I seems as if he is asking if one would rather pass on by the fires of heaven, or the ice that he punished earlier sinners with. Fire and ice are negative components in this poem, both being directly caused by sins and disobedience, and both are the way in which people will parish

as a result of their actions. In line six, Frost brings up hate. Hate is destructive as well as very negative and can not be brought to a positive light. At this point in the poem, I think the fire and ice takes on a new meaning. Both fire and water, which I see as ice, can not be present at the same time. They exists on opposite ends of the spectrum., but yet both symbolize destruction and negative actions. “To say that for destruction ice is also great, And would suffice”, this is where I feel Frost uses fire and ice to symbolize desire and hate. Desire can be the lust, greed, or the drive to obtain excess material possessions for a persons own gratification. Ice represents the hate and the turmoil that exists between to sides that lead to fatal confrontations. When he says “...Is also great and would suffice”, he refers to the world ending in ice instead of fire and the fact that he would accept that also. Either way, if the world ends in fire or if it ends in ice, the outcome of the people is still the same; death. The concept of the poem seems very easy to understand, but as you look deeper into the metaphors, different meaning come out of it. The religious aspect jumped out at me, instantly relating me to the Catholic faith and the Bible. Love and hate exist everywhere, in national affairs, marriages, and communities, and religion exists in each of those matters as well. I believe that many of they decisions that are made are based on ones religious faith. If something goes against the faith in which you believe, then a person will look for an alternate route to solve the problem. As for the fire and ice metaphor, I hope that through faith the world does not end through either way, that peace will reign and the injustices that go on will be limited.
