Is there really such a thing as a feminist fairy tale?

Fairy tales are ancient stories that entertain the masses and teach morals to children. They are considered oral traditions that are passed down through the centuries as a tool to teach children how to act and think. In todays society some of those moral messages are being questioned. Beauty and the Beast is an age old fairy tale that is not about the passive female role. Like most fairy tales of that time it is partially rooted in the negative female role, but is also the most feminist fairy tale that has come out of that age. The female characters are usually obedient, silent, and helpless. Yet Beauty is a much more developed and intelligent character that doesnt fit the basic mold. This helps give children a more positive female outlook at the most crucial time in their learning, they also begin to see the strength in many old world fictional characters. The Beast in this tale does not control Beauty he is in a sense more intimidated by her and her beauty. This explains the need for both the Beast and Beauty to learn to love past beauty. This more female centered route of Beauty and the Beast was also used by Disney.

Interpretation for Children

In the case of Beauty and the Beast their are many different forms of interpretation for young girls. At young ages they absorb all this information that leads them into their certain roads in life. The strength of the female love in this tale allows children to see what a difference it can make. Beauty and the Beast proves the female love can redefine the brute in man and this inspires a more liberal dream for love in children. This dream for love was more based in the female role because of the major role Beauty plays in the process. It is not that she falls in love with her male counterpart but he begins the process. The emphasis on beauty and appearance proves to be a tool in teaching children how to love past beauty as Beauty had to. She learned how to love someone so hideous. She then understands that love does not grow out of physical attraction but out of a bond of respect. Giving her the talent and ability to see beauty in the inside and not judge a book by its cover.

Some current interpretations feel that women need to see the sexuality in the beast before they can handle normal heterosexuality in life. Since sexuality is not based in peoples physical appearance yet the attraction to someone emotionally and mentally this needs to be understood. In this day and age sexuality has defiantly begun to be defined minus the active male role and the passive female role. Beautys goodness in this fairy tale inspired more idealistic forms of lessons that children should learn. Instead of a generic commitment to justice, she wants her own things in life not simply what the population wants for her.

Young girls think they need to prepare for marriage, where their fathers will give them away to their night in shinning armor after reading many fairy tales. Beauty does not go to the knight in shinning armor nor the one her father wants her to marry. She makes that decision herself. The story book endings that deal with the girl living happily ever after and the male being the hero leads, into a false sense of security. Those moral messages do not allow for young girls to see the other side of the spectrum. They start to think that men are the only option and heterosexuality is the only choice. In the world of diversity these stories are defiantly out dated, the options one has in loving someone is defiantly not a one gender decision. If Beauty and the beast is read in a lesbian point of view, the Beast is seen as the lesbian because of her feelings for Beauty and because she fells ugly and monstrous. The difference in the story is that love doesnt change the beast back to a human but the human (lesbian) is changed into the beast. This version of the story simply emphasizes the moral of seeing past appearances, not taking away from the strength of Beauty.

The character Beauty is one of the most impressive main characters in any fairy tale, she is defiantly does not play the simple female role. Beauty is the heroine and she isnt even a passive heroine, she takes on an active part in the main plot of the story. Learning and accepting love through her struggles allows her to reach a better understanding of the love she finds. Beautys willingness to take her fathers place in the Beasts castle proves her love to be so passionate that she would give up anything for him. This love she feels makes her character that much more respectable. Beauty was a intelligent, independent, and respectable young women which is a fit role model for any child. Beauty and the Beast portrays some of the most amazing testaments of womens struggles against arranged marriages and the definition of sexuality. Beauty is one example of the strong women characters in fairy tales.

The absence of her mother makes it seem as if one was not needed. Since she was also orphaned child the reader immediately identifies with her and sympathizes with her situation. This is a reason or escape by the author of this fairy tale to make an excuse for how different Beauty really is for being intellectual and motivated towards high goals, not just marring and having a family. In some forms of this fairy tale the father sacrifices the daughter, it is not a decision made by Beauty. This interpretation of his actions can also seen in the bible, this is an exhibit of how women were looked at as less important in the family as a hole. It was still her decision to finally commit to the Beast she was neither forced nor persuaded.

The Beast is a character that defiantly exemplifies that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Way people react to the beast is another way to see into the male point of reference, since he is a man it confuses the definition of what it is to be a man. Is he seen as a man or simply as a beast? He has all the feelings of a man, yet why was he subjected to such persecution. This basic persecution is from the blindness of society not being able to see past the outer shell. The Beasts animal nature is really seen because he feels inferior to Beauty, his inhibitions is reveled in his quietness and inability to look at her as an equal. Beauty is again up on a pedestal, he feels lower than her, Beauty is not the one proving her self. The Beast is trying to reach her. Beauty and the Beast doesnt focus on womens vulnerability to male violence instead it is dealing with mens reaction to womens indifference. The Beast shows his male desire and Beauty has a cruel female response of indifference. The venerability of the Beast in this situation proves the real status of Beauty above him. After waking up from his curse the beast also learned something from his ordeal (Warner 1). He was so obsessed with being beautiful the fact that Beauty feel in love with him made him realize that beauty doesnt make a difference. At that time the Beast as a character takes a more intellectual path.

Some of the sources felt that the Beast did not need to change his attitudes or emotions, simply his physical appearance. In a sense that statement is contradictory to the theme or moral of the story. That Beauty only needs to look at his outer Beauty to love him, and what ever is inside does not matter. In that case the Beast would not even need to change or grow, and Beauty could continue living her sheltered way of thinking. In the same type of a sexist point of view another author feels that the beast is a victim. The aged fairy which in most stories is a good fairy yet in this interpretation is evil fairy changes him into the beast because of malicious reasons. The states that the fairy wished this horrible curse upon him because he turned down her advances. The other story is based around the selfishness of the prince. That the fairy came to his castle asking for shelter and because of her appearance turned her down. The fairy then reacted by placing the curse upon him to teach him a lesson.

The Beast in this fairy tale also is a symbol of prejudice, that people who are not as attractive as others have are looked a as different. Another lesson is that of undoing the prejudices surrounding the humans. Beauty needs to learn the main moral lesson of that learning to be accepting of people wither or not they are beautiful, and trying to see the inside instead of simply touching the outside. The fact that she was forced to live with the Beast and the only reason she feels frightened is because of his reputation. Fairy tales often set limits with fear in Beauty and the Beast, Beauty has a limit when it concerns dealing with the Beast. That limit is set because it is the unknown, the Beast is simply rumored and no one knows what the Beast is about for sure. Overcoming her terrors is part of the moral or lesson in this story. In one story Beauty really contradicts herself wondering how women could marry rich brutes when they are evil instead of someone like the Beast. Beauty has to learn the lesson of accepting humans for who they are and not for the concept that the public believe. Learning that people are not always what they seem and that usually the large majority is wrong.

William Stafford once said, ”Writing itself is one of the great, free human activities.” Every person is entitled to his or her own opinion. In writing you can feel assured that you can be free with your ideas and beliefs without being judged. No teacher can give you an unfair grade because he or she does not agree with what you have stated in one of your papers. I strongly believe that there is no right or wrong when one is expressing the way they feel or think about a certain subject or idea. When you put on your clothes in the morning is there someone there to grade you or tell you that you are wearing the wrong thing? If you are getting in your car to go to the store nobody can tell you that you have to go a certain way to get there, do they? No, because you are free to put on whatever clothes you wish as you are free to drive in whatever direction you choose. Writing I believe has the same freedom, there are no boundaries that cannot be crossed, and there are no limits that are preset. When we write, we tend to put on paper thoughts or statements that we would never think of saying out loud. I can think back to when I was in High School and had a crush on a boy, I would have never walked up to him and told him how I felt. It was so much easier to express my feelings on paper rather than face to face. I never thought for one moment that he would return my letter to me with a note on top that said what I had written was wrong. When we write a story, we can get lost in our imagination. We can go beyond the boundaries of our wildest dreams without even thinking twice about it. I find that when I write down how I feel I cannot be scolded or punished for what I write, so I let my feelings out and express my opinions, thoughts, and views without being afraid. Writing is also a way to express our individuality in that what we write makes us each different or unique. I have often stated that I am not a creative person , but I have discovered in writing this paragraph that when you put words on paper you become creative in your own aspect.

Holden Caulfield

We can learn about Holdens character from his own account of his adventures and to a lesser extent from his speeches and actions; and also from the reactions of others to him. Holden is like all teenagers; he has a mixture of moods and attitudes, and searches for some security. Holden is aware that there are many choices available, but he has had no instructions on religious or moral values.

Holden is virtuous; but it his virtue that leads him into difficulties. He expects everyone else to be like him, Holden sets very high standards. He is sympathetic and thoughtful he asks Ackley out despite his dislike of him and visits Mr Spencer when he has the flu. Holden feels sorry for Sunny the prostitute. He notices details such as her green dress and the he remarks on Mrs Morrows rings and her magazine, and the nuns cheap glasses. Holden is an idealist. His high expectations include honesty, which he expresses as a lack of phoniness and consistency, however these are not achieved by the adult world he must soon join, as a result of this he becomes more and more depressed. essaybank.co.uk wwga gaw esgagas ayga gaba nga kcga gauk!

Holden hates hypocrites and phoneys, but meets few people who are honest. Even his teachers are phoneys; Mr Spencer acts in front of the headmaster, and the headmaster performs in front of the rich parents and Mr Antolini appears to have suspect morals. The nightclubs that Holden visits are full of phoneys; Sally Hayes adores them and is one herself. The acclaimed Lunts and Olivier, Ernie and the cabaret singers are praised by everyone except Holden; even his brother, D.B. has gone to Hollywood, the phoniest place of all; he goes as far as saying that he is a ‘prostitute because he sells his writing for films. The few people who are not phoneys though are Allie and James Castle. wwgf gfw esgfgfs aygf gfba ngf kcgf gfuk.

Although Holden is innocent he is not naive. Society has affected him to the extent that he is aware of the cost of things. He refers to the value of his coat, his cases, his typewriter and even his pens. He does not cherish his possessions as he tells us. When his gloves were stolen the only thing he cares about is that he is cold. When he was a child he lost his belongings  now as a teenager he fails to take his change and hates people who spend time at posh restaurants and popular bars; yet there is a hypocritical side to him which makes him take taxis, go to bars, cinemas and theatres, and stay in hotels. Holden is both repelled and fascinated by sex. He longs to find what it is all about, and to experience the passion that was hinted by Stradlater and envied by Ackley. He watches from his hotel window in an almost voyeuristic fashion and finds that the reality is unappealing. He finds that Sunnys efforts to entertain him were dirty. Sex, which is so prized by the adult world, Holden finds worthless. wwfb fbw esfbfbs ayfb fbba nfb kcfb fbuk;

Holden is aware of the importance of social status, he cant be in the same room as someone who is insecure about their status. Holden seems anxious to keep up with his contemporaries, behaving in an over the top manner with Stradlater, being rude to Ackley and refusing to answer questions. His friends find him immature but this is not surprising as he is two years younger than them.

Society has taken everything from Holden, both of his brothers presence and also his parents. Stradlater borrows all he owns, his clothes and even his

The author, aristocrat, Niccolo Machiavelli reveals in, “The Prince” qualities about principles that kings or presidents should follow or manipulate to maintain and keep their kingdom or country. Machiavelli defines the qualities of “One Those Things For Which Men, and Particularly Princes are Praised or Blamed” or “A Prince should Keep His Word”, or “On Avoiding Being Despised and Hated”. Thereafter, Machiavelli expresses and discusses to be successful as a prince and uses the qualities to become a well-organized state and satisfy the people and to keep them content. Machiavelli compares and contrast these qualities to the best strategy is to do what works best in a particular circumstance.

As far as, “One Those Things For Which Men, and Particularly Princes and Praised or Blamed” mentioned above, Machiavelli begins this very notorious chapter by acknowledging that what he is about to write might surprise, and even offend people. However, it is better to give advice based on what the world is actually like, and the way that politics actually works, then to give idealized advice based only on what sounds nice. In this passage Machiavelli declares that the man who “abandons what is done for what ought to be done, will rather learn to bring about his own ruin than his preservation,” (page 46). Since so many people fail to act according to these standards in reality, continuing to be “good” can only weaken a ruler. Instead, Machiavelli states, “it is necessary for a prince.... to learn how not to be “good” according to the circumstances“. Then, Machiavelli lists a number of the qualities that can bring a prince praise “liberality, mercy and trustworthiness” or blame, “greed, cruelty, and lust“. Obviously, it is better

for a prince to be praised than blamed, and a prince would be loved completely by all his citizens if he actually possessed all of those praiseworthy qualities. However, no prince will have every good quality, and most princes will have at least a few of those bad ones. The key, then, is that the prince should hide from the people those vices that he may have, and to make sure that he seems to have as many virtues as possible.

Write your The Prince research paper

Like the previous passage, Machiavelli talks about, “How a Prince Should Keep His Word”. Obviously a prince should not lie or act hypocritically and should also live with integrity. However, it is also the case that many princes who have not kept their word have accomplished great things, and have even conquered other prices that have kept their word faithfully. Machiavelli’s states, “And if men were all good, this rule would not be good; but since men are a sorry lot and will not keep their promises to you, you likewise need not keep your to them”, (page 46). Therefore, even being a prince it is necessary for them to have a mind ready to turn for there own gain. However, even in our modern society government had broken promises to gain their position and be elected. For example, Robert Kotcharian, President of Armenia, promised welfare to families in need and donates money to education, but no promise has been accomplished. However, Mr. Kotcharian is trying to be elected for the second time, again with promises that was never successfully done. Prince should always seem to have virtues, even if he doesn’t actually have them. Moreover, seeming to have virtues is actually better than really having them, since a prince is therefore not tied by the bonds of morality. If the prince does not feel any constraint of “virtue,” a prince is better able to do what he needs to do in any given situation. He must have a mind “disposed to adapt itself according to the world,” able to

do good when he can but also do evil when he must.

A prince should above all avoid being hated. “On Avoiding Being Despised and Hated, Machiavelli states, “that a prince who is understood to be of great merit is difficult to conspire against or attack. He declares that a ruler must have two fears one, concerning his subjects, and the other, concerning foreign powers“ (page 4). Prince can guard himself against the hatred of his citizens by never seeming “frivolous, changeable or shallow,” and instead seeming to follow certain unwavering principles of upright morality. By behaving in this way, a prince will avoid the greatest political danger. If a prince does not take care to avoid the hatred of his citizens, then, he will live in a state of constant fear. Machiavelli offers the example of, “Messer Annibale Bentivoglio, prince of Bologna and grandfather of the present Messer Annibale, was murdered by the Caneschi family, who conspired against him; he left behind no heir except Messer Giovanni, then only a baby. As soon as this murder occurred, the people rose up and killed all the Canneschi.”

Absolutely, the prince, the king or the president should obtain these qualities to gain power, to achieve the final end of becoming and remaining the prince. In these passages mentioned above, “praised or blamed,” or “prince keep his word” or “despised and hated” using these qualities a prince will not make himself look cruel and harsh encouraging discontent among his subject, and the people will be more grateful and more loyal and not be against him.

I believe that the development of the plot clearly proves that Mrs. Margot Macomber murders Mr. Francis Macomber. Their relationship is not healthy and Francis has changed in a way that makes Margot feel very uncomfortable. The reactions of Margot and Wilson, once Francis is dead, only support the murder of Mr. Macomber.

The relationship between Francis and Margot is not healthy. We know that from time to time they are “on the verge” of breaking up, or having a huge fight, their story does not specify. Margot ruins their relationship on the safari when she has an affair with Wilson, and flirts and kisses Wilson right in front of Francis, and when she totally puts Francis down and says that Wilson is the better, braver man. We can believe Francis when he accuses Margot of having the affair because Francis proves himself not to be very jealous, because he does not do much about Margot’s behavior. Their relationship is also a very dependent one because Margot depends on Francis to support her with his money, and Francis depends on her as a companion. “She had missed the chance to leave him and he knew it. If he had been better with women she would probably have started to worry about him getting anther new, beautiful wife; but she knew too much about him to worry about him either.”(45) So, Margot is free to have affairs because they are bound.

The power that Margot has, that allows her do whatever she wants, shifts over to Francis who finds confidence. Margot notices this, “From the far corner of her seat Margot Macomber looked at the two of them. There was no change in Wilson... But she saw the change in Francis Macomber now… “Your both talking rot,’ said Margot. ‘ Just because you have chased some helpless animals in a motorcar you talk like heroes…’If you don’t know what we’re talking about why not keep out of it?’ Macomber asked his wife. ‘You’ve gotten awfully brave, awfully suddenly,’ his wife said contemptuously, but her contempt was not secure. She was very afraid of something.” (54) This something could mean that Francis is ready to leave Margot.

The Road To Self Discovery

Essential to Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior is the theme of finding one’s own personal voice and identity. Interspersed throughout the memoir’s five parts are numerous references to the emotional and physical struggle that Kingston endures on her path to finding her own identity. For the many women who are voiceless throughout the novel, Kingston supplies the language these silent women need and in effect, give them their own, individualized identities. There is a movement throughout the entire memoir from silence to language. The memoir opens with the words “You must not tell anyone…” (1) and closes with, “It translated well,” (0) marking the journey from voicelessness and silence to strength and an identity. Through the telling of these voiceless women’s’ stories, Kingston is able to find her own voice, her own identity, a process that, though always morphing and changing, eventually leads Kingston to a strong sense of self.

Kingston struggles with her identity which in turn reflects her gender ideas. She wants to show her readers that she is a woman warrior, she wants to be the woman warrior and the writing of her memoir guides her through that process. She shows this in many ways by telling stories which reflect her personality or, in her mind, her gender. Leslie W. Rabine makes reference to this idea in her writing No Lost Paradise Social Gender and Symbolic Gender in the Writings Of Maxine Hong Kingston. She explains how “Kingston does away with the illusion of a universal feminine, placing among her confusing and painful childhood experiences the attempts to be ‘American Feminine’” (Casebook 88). An integral part of Kingston’s road to self discovery lies in finding her place both as a female and as a Chinese-American living in an American society.

“No Name Woman,” the first part of the novel details Kingston’s childhood and starts off the memoir by breaking the family-imposed silence that surrounds the secret of an aunt, whom she refers to as No Name Woman, who became pregnant through adultery while her husband was away. Because Kingston is so concerned with exploring how her Chinese cultural history can be reconciled with her emerging sense of self as an American, she explores this Chinese history and tries to connect it to her present life. She explains how, when questioned, No Name Woman refuses to name the father of her unborn child, a protection for him but a simultaneous victimization for her, as a nameless woman suggests someone with neither a story nor a voice. The intensity and intricate detailing of the story allows the readers a glimpse of what it was like to be a woman in a Chinese society. Brave Orchid tells Kingston this story because she wants her daughter to be the perfect female for their family. “Dont let your father know I told you. He denies her. Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her could happen to you. Dont humiliate us. You wouldnt like to be forgotten as if you had never been born. The villagers are watchful” (5). Kingston realizes here that her mother is concerned about the possibility of Kingston having premarital sex, as she clearly states that as her reason for telling No Name Woman’s story, but she fails to realize at this point that, in telling this story, Brave Orchid also hopes to strengthen her daughter both emotionally and psychologically by providing for her some sense of self.

In order to fill in some of the gaps in the story, Kingston hypothesizes the many different ways in which her aunt became pregnant and, by the very act of writing down her aunt’s story, Kingston in effect gives this silent woman a voice. For Kingston, “the [aunt’s] real punishment was not the raid swiftly inflicted by the villagers, but the family’s deliberately forgetting her…My aunt haunts me her ghost drawn to me because now, after fifty years of neglect, I alone devote pages of paper to her” (16). Although Kingston never learns what her aunt’s real name was, the symbolic act of naming the woman No Name Woman honors this forgotten ancestor’s memory.

Kingston is extremely interested in bridging the gap between her past and her present, as she states, “Those of us in the first American generations have had to figure out how the invisible world the emigrants built around our childhood fits into solid America” (5). By rewriting her mother’s talk-story and giving No Name Woman a new voice, Kingston is taking one of the first steps in reconciling her Chinese past and her American present. Throughout the course of the memoir she learns the act of talk-story telling from her mother, marking a certain continuity between her, representing the first-generation Chinese-American, and her mother, representing the cultural Chinese. Though she does yet not realize it, Kingston will eventually come to see the strong connection between her and her mother and how this has helped her form her own identity.

Because of the essentially silent role that women play in Chinese culture, then the talk-stories and legends that mothers tell their daughters can also be seen as unspoken guides for the children. One such talk-story, the legend of the Chinese woman warrior Fa Mu Lan, is a constant reminder to young Kingston that women can rise above socially imposed barriers. “White Tigers” is, in part, the story of Kingston’s childhood fantasy of transcending a life of insignificance. As a child, Kingston imagines herself to be like Fa Mu Lan, who saves both her family and community. Brave Orchid’s tale of this woman warrior exemplifies how talk-stories and legends create alternative voices for women who otherwise would remain silent their entire lives, always dominated by the men.

Kingston’s young adult life, however, remains a voiceless one. Juxtaposed with her fantasies of warrior greatness in “White Tigers” are memories of times when her voice was of no help in protecting herself and others. She recalls her whispered protests at one of her employer’s racist attitudes, which she challenges using a “small-person’s voice that makes no impact” (48). Refusing to type invitations for a different employer who chooses to hold a banquet at a restaurant being picketed by the NAACP and the Congress of Racial Equality, Kingston is immediately fired. But again, her protest is whispered, her “voice unreliable” (4).

Kingston’s empowering women by creating individualized voices for them also works in relation to her mother. Because Brave Orchid, despite her many years in America, does not speak English, she is effectively voiceless in her new world. Through Kingston, however, Brave Orchid’s achievements are vocalized and recorded, just like all the other women’s lives in The Woman Warrior. Kingston’s memoir reveals Brave Orchid’s sacrifices and lifts her out of the nameless Chinese crowd living in America. Ironically though, this process of voicing women’s experience threatens Kingston’s own self-esteem and ability to find her own voice and identity. Kingston also details another example of Brave Orchid’s independence and strength by explaining her mother’s decision to keep her own name, rather than take her husband’s at their marriage. Here the power of to name oneself and to have a strong, self-created identity is especially poignant. It is strengthened even more when Brave Orchid “kept Brave Orchid, adding no American name nor holding one in reserve for American emergencies” (77). Kingston is seeing more and more how important it is to have a name, and that the people who control the power of language can survive any ordeal because they will not lose their personal identities.

At the end of the third part, titled “Shaman,” Kingston and her mother have a talk about the differences between some of the Chinese and American cultures, like the way time works, and how a sense of belonging changes a person’s perspective. By the end of their talk, both have gained a better understanding of the other and they even refer to one another by their old endearing names, “Little Dog” and “Mama.” Kingston is finally able to acknowledge the succession of generations and the fact that her mother has contributed to her identity and she can finally proudly recognize their similarities, “I am really a Dragon, as she is a Dragon, both of us born in dragon years. I am practically a first daughter of a first daughter” (10).

When an incident occurs with the delivery of pharmaceutical drugs to the family laundry business instead of their usual order and Brave Orchid forces Kingston to demand reparations from the druggist, Kingston is embarrassed, and thus comes to a new crossroads in her search for a voice and her own identity “You can’t entrust your voice to the Chinese either...they want to capture your voice for their own use” (16). She is really starting to grasp and work through the paradoxes and seeming dead-ends that she is encountering when trying to reconcile the two different cultures.

Kingston sees all too clearly that the cost of remaining silent is great, as proved by Kingston’s tale of her aunt, Mood Orchid. The tragic story, told in “At the Western Place,” depicts a woman, deserted by her husband, who has so completely internalized the patriarchical view that women should always remain silent and never question male authority that she literally is silenced to death. But Kingston, by writing down her aunt’s story, puts the voice back into Moon Orchid’s life while simultaneously adding another step to her own path of self discovery. By actually putting into words the story of Mood Orchid, Kingston is able to see what paths not to follow and learns an important lesson.

In the memoir’s last chapter, “A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe,” Kingston searches to locate a middle ground in which she can live within each of these two cultures, and essentially, ends up fusing the two to create her own identity with both of them. While she finds that traditional Chinese society silences women, she also discovers that well-behaved females in American society are just as quickly expected to be quiet. In order to feel even partially accepted in American culture, young Kingston feels she must retreat behind an emotional wall and lose her voice “We American-Chinese girls had to whisper to make ourselves American-feminine. Apparently we whispered even more softly than the Americans” (167). Despite this whispering however, Kingston, even as a child, knows the consequences of being voiceless. In one poignant and painful episode, she describes the hatred she felt for another Chinese girl who refused to speak, and the physical brutality Kingston resorted to in order to try and get this silent girl to talk, “I pulled at the hair at her temples, pulled the tears out of her eyes. “Say, ‘Ow,’” I said…You’re disgusting…I grabbed her by the shoulders…” (178-17). In truth though, her hatred for this girl is all the more vivid because this silent girl is so much like her, physically, emotionally and socially. Kingston fears becoming exactly like this voiceless and nameless girl, who in effect, serves as Kingston’s alter ego. The realization here is also that voice is not always the wonder that Kingston dreams it to be, rather it is associated with “the worst thing I had yet done to another person” (10).

Another obstacle in Kingston’s search for self discovery was the veil of secrecy that was kept around the family affairs. Because Kingston’s parents came to the United States at the time when Chinese immigration was illegal, the children were never allowed to speak of their cultural origins and history. But even if Kingston had wanted to talk about it, she would not have been able to, for there was so little information even volunteered to her about her background that it would have made it almost impossible to tell. This voicelessness only further hinders Kingston’s self definition. For Kingston, the very act of writing The Woman Warrior is a healing and emotional experience, a form of therapy for her. Talking about her past becomes her cure for silence and her method for achieving an individual voice and a personal place in society and her world. In addition, by writing this memoir, Kingston in effect makes sure that now that she has found her identity and her voice, no one will be able to take it away from her, nor will she ever be forgotten.

At the end of the memoir, Kingston tells the talk-story of Ts’ai Yen, a poetess who was captured by barbarians and forced to live among them for many years. Though unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first, Ts’ai Yen eventually learns how to fit the barbarians into her life while still maintaining her culture and heritage. By the end of the memoir, Kingston too has found herself, her voice, and learned the need to incorporate both Brave Orchid’s talk-stories and the new way of American life into her own life and make it all fit together. She has finally learned that she too can be a Woman Warrior.

This is frightening for Kingston because she feels that women are being watched to make sure they are behaving the right way for society. Kingston eventually overcomes this womanly figure by turning into a warrior. Whether her stories are true or not she is telling us that she can take care of herself and portray herself in a masculine way. Through all her experiences with the old man and woman whom she refers to numerous times throughout the course of the book, she learns how to become tough and take care of herself.

What does the audience learn about the four characters Tybalt, Capulet, Romeo and Juliet from what they say and do in this scene?

This particular scene is intended for the audience to learn a great deal about the characters. This scene in entwined with information that links to the past and futire and becomes the basis for the most powerful and moving movements of the play. The action in this scene interchanges between the various main characters, which provides a much higher impact on the audience and brings exitement, it does this because these interchages make it less tedious as you have to keep up with the play with its dramatic movements leading from one to the next. The audience already though anticipate alot due to the actions that have already taken place in the play. It is expectant something will happen because the foe of the capulets the montagues are gate-crashing there annual party, which may lead to more violence and bitterness between the two famillies. Not to forget Juliets introduction to Paris my her mother who has raised the question of marriage in her mind and intrigues Juliet into thinking about her future companion.

Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet the most powerful of love runs along side the most merciful and bitter of hatreds. This contrast is introduced in this scene, with Juliet and Romeos instant uncontrolable passion contrasts greatly with Tybalts instant hatred and violent anger he has aainst Romeo who seems to be insulting his family. Also Capulets jolly and comical attiude compares with the attraction Romeo and Juliet feel towards each other.

These scene does not only give the audience a greater insight and understanding of the characters but they also see the beginings of even more significant actions that happen in the near future.

Write your Romeo and Juliet research paper

The scene opens with a welcoming from lord Capulet to his guests of his party htis shows the audience he is a good host. It also shows them he is a happy and jolly man. His attiude as a good host backs up his personality as a caring a protectice father which is demonstrated in the scence with Paris becuase it shows he loves and cares for her daughter because he will only allow for him to marry her if she can love him and she is a bit older which also shows is understaning and vcaring side. We also see a caring side to him here because he obviously wants his guests to have a good time tonight which is obvious in his language and the things he says. I can shows this by;

Welcome gentlemen! Ladies that have their toes

Unplagued with corns will walk a bout with you.

Ah, my mistresses, which of you all

Will now deny to dance? She that makes dainty,

Shell I swear hath corns. Am I come nea ye now?

Welcome getnlemen! I have seen the day

That I have worn a visor and could tell

A whispering tale in a fair ladies ear,

Such as would please, tis gone tis gone, tis gone.

You are welcome genetlemen.

Many things in here show that he is glad his guests have come. The fact he repeats the word welcome three times shows how truely deleighted and greatful he is to have visitors with him at his house. The joke he cracks suggests he has a playful and comical nature. Capulet also becomes nostalgic with reminiscences of the past he tells, which shows he enjoyed the times when he was younger and flirting with the girls. But to be honest and esspecially when he is talking to cousin capulet he tends to become less joyful and his memories seem to be wishes of wanting to be young again.

When Romeo first sets his eyes on Juliet he becomes enthrawled with her looks and soon forgets about his old love Roselynne who pines for at the beggining of the play. He describes Juliet as being more beautiful than anything he had ever seen beofre, I can prove this by

O she doth teach the torches to burn bright!

It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night

As a rich jewel in a Ethiops ear -

Beauty to rich for use, for earth to dear

So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows,

As yonder lady oer her fellows shows.

The measure done, Ill watch her place of stand,

And touching hers, make blessed my rude hnad.

Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight!

For I neer saw true beauty till this night.

This shows how Romeo feels about Juliet just by looking at her. The audience learn of how Romeo is instantly attracted to Juliet and how one glance can change his mind and make him love someone eles. He explains how Juliets beauty is to perfect that in comparsence to everyone eles she is the most beautiful and everyone eles are ugly or crows. He tells us he thinks she is to good to be on Earth and that he thinks she to good to be used for anything. Romeo also thinks of her as some kind of shrine or something oly as he thinks ig he touches her he will be blessed. But could his actions here just be one of a ire#resposible and reckless teenager. Who falls into a deep pit of depression over one female Roselynee (when he spends all night outside then makes a false night in his bedroom during the day) and then falls head over heels for another. He seems to only judge by appearance instead of personality as well, maybe he should just learn there is more to a pretty face. To be honest he seems very unbalanced and his feelings change quickly. He is bewitched by the charm of looks as it describes in the last chorus.

When Tybalt first enters the scene we learn he easily and quickly angered and why he is called the Fiery Tybalt. When he hears Romeos voice immedietly realises it is a montague. He immedietly takes action by calling for his sword which means he must want to confront and even kill Romeo. I aslo learn that he thinks beofr leaps and doesnt really realise what such action could bring about. He also says;

Now by the stock and honour of my kin,

To strike him dead I hold it not a sin.

This shows that Tybalt thinks that by killing Romeo he would be doing the family a favour because he is dis-honouring them and causing a insult by presenting himself at the Capulets party. He also thinks he is doing the right thing - but causing a riot and what is supposed to be an enjoyable happy occasion, is that the right thing? As death is not a happy thing.

Capulet soon interupts Tybalt who is ready to challenge Romeo, Capulet stops Tybalt from confronting Romeo because of several things. Firstly, he has taken the warning from the Prince seriously he understands that if anymore riots are created the persons involved will lose their lives and he is only trying to do the best thing for Tybalt by protecting him. Secondly, he doesnt want is merry and happy party atmosphere destroyed by Tybalts stormy temper. Next, he attually quite likes Romeo and doesnt see him attually thinks he is quite a wise teenager as he describes him as virtueous and well goverened youth. So he doesnt really want to see him killed. Also, I dont think he wants Tybalt to always do what he wants and he wants and to show Tybalt where he stands and learn to consult him beofre he jumps into things with his stormy attiude. Beacsue of Tybalts action and his deep hatred and much wanting to kill Romeo, Tybalt argues with Capulet demanding for Capulet to see that thsi should be seen as an insult. Capulet sees this as a kind of insult of his power and exerts his authority onto Tybalt and lashes out at him. I can show this by

You are a saucy boy. Ist so indeed.

This trick may chance to scathe you. I know what.

You must contrary me! Marry, tis time -

Well said, my hearts! - You are a princox, go,

Be quite, or - Moe light, more light! - For shame,

Ill mkae you quiet, what! - Cheerly, my hearts!

This shows the insults Capulet puts on him he calls him big headed (princox). He is very annoyed the way Tybalt try to contradict him and over demine his authority even though Capulet is head of the household. The audience learn from this that Capulet is not only a good host and a good father but is a good head of the household he knows where his authority is needed amnd he quite a wise man beacause he doesnt want to cause trouble. Unlike Tybalt who doesnt not think as actions come first and is easily angered. Although everntually Tybalt backs down but he swears to seek revenge upon this insult.as he says

In will withdraw, but this intrusion shall,

Now seeming sweet, convert to bittrest gall.

This shows to the audience that theyll expect sometime in the future for Tybalt to challenge Romeo and get revenge for this intrusion amd dis-honour on his family.

The next movement is between Romeo and Juliet with their first encouters of each other. Romeo begins to chat Juliet and flirt with her alot. He tries to get his best to get a kiss out of Juliet. He uses such corny lines about that shes a holy shrine and if he does touch her then he will be blessed but she will be spoiled beacause his hands are to rough and he will need to kiss her better. He begins to develop her beauty even more here as well and makes her sound like a creature from heaven. She is obviously not bothered by Romeo as she flirts back and eventually allows for him to kiss her. There encounter seems from the script only like two teenagers flirting yet behind it all there is the begginings of true love. The message of instant attraction that lures them both together, but yet they should share great hatred and spite for each other due to there names being thoose from famillies that deeply resent each other. (The Montagues and the Capulets). The audience learn that sooner or later there names are going to effect them in some way, and obviously because of the hatred the famillies feel for one another theyll disallow any relationship to go on between them. Close to the end of the scene Romeo finds out that Juliets mother is Lday Capulets. This obviously shocks Romeo as he says

O dear account! My life is my foes debt.

This shows that his life is now in his enemies hands or his life is in Juliets hands. This is because even though he has only met her for a few minutes he is already otally in love with her. Which to be honest is a bit quick which also shows his unbalanced teenage side again.

When Juliet asks her nurse about who Romeo is, it is obvious she really likes him to. But when she finds out he is a montague she is to shocked and upset

My only love sprung from my only hate!

To early seen unknown, and know to late!

Prodigious birth of love it is to me,

That I must love a loathed enemy.

This shows how deeply upset Juliet is about Romeo being a montague. Also because she mentuions love three times it shows to the audience that she really does love him. She is confused because she is supposed to hate the one she loves. Also before that shakespeare as seem to cleverly put in a future proficy omen as she says; My grave is like to be my wedding bed. This is because getting married to Romeo makes her kill herself in the end, because they become wrapped up in so much love theyll do anyhting to stay together.

The audience have learnt a great deal from this scene. Esspecially about the characters and how they can change. Capulet who is a good host and good father can automatically excert his authority. THis also happens agin when he tries forcing Juliet to marry Paris although she doesnt want to. There is Tybalt who displays deep eggression and hatred for the Montagues. Romeo who is a reckless heart throbbed teenager whith mixed feelings and feels true love and desire for Juliet. Then Juliet a teenager thinking about marriage who has found her true love in minutes but disappointed because of his name.

This scene is not opnly so the audience can learn a great deal but its the start of key moments of danger and exitment that captivate the audience. Romeo and Juliets breif but expressionate meeting brings true love and leads to marriage. Tybalts thirst revenge turns into a nasty and destructive street brawl which not only kills himself but Mercutio. Of which Romeo gets banished for and leads to the tradgic end for our star-crossed lovers who end there life through there determination to be together. Or as the final chrous says

Being held a foe he may not have access

To breath such vows as lovers use to swear,

And she as much in love, her means much less

To meet her new-beloved any where;

But passion lends them power, time means, to meet,

Tempring extremities with extreeme sweet.

This just means because they are enemies they will be unable to get married but because there love is so strong somehow theyll get around it, but risking there lives and the lives of those around them on the way.

Hamlet Analysis

What is mans purpose in life? Is there a purpose? If there isnt, then is it wise to end it, despite the fact that there might be nothing better? In Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet struggles with these and other issues. He states that the question of life is To be, or not to be...? In this monologue, Hamlet is wondering what his purpose is. He states that the only reason people tolerate their horrible lives is the uncertainty of what lies after death. Who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after death...?” Hamlet must question himself to discover the answers. At the point in Hamlet when this famous soliloquy takes place, Hamlet has many reasons to be questioning his existence.

Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his late father, who explains that he was murdered by Hamlets uncle, who is Hamlets mothers new husband. His father cannot rest until Hamlet has gotten revenge. Hamlets father has just been murdered, his friends are sent to spy on him, his lover is forbidden to see him, and Hamlet feels that his life is pointless and miserable. The pangs of disprized love, the laws delay, the insolence of office, and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes... These are the miseries that Hamlet must endure. This is why he makes this speech to himself, almost as if he is convincing himself that there are reasons to stay living.

Most everyone in Hamlet is leading a horrible life. Hamlets mother has just lost a husband, his uncle is worried and guilt-stricken over the terrible crime he committed of murdering his brother, and Ophelia, Hamlets lover, is miserable because her half-witted father has forbidden her to see Hamlet. This soliloquy pertains not only to Hamlet, but to virtually all the characters in the play. All the characters are bearing the whips and scorns of their lives. The monologue is not only relevant to the characters in Hamlet, but to all people.

Many people feel at some point that their lives are not worth living. They may question if life has a purpose, and whether or not they are serving that purpose. It is quite easy to relate to Hamlets feelings of woe and uncertainty. This is what makes Hamlet timeless. No matter what century, country, or person, everyone has experienced to some degree what Hamlet suffered. Perhaps someone has just lost a father, or undergone a divorce. They could relate to Hamlets misery. They may not contemplate suicide, as is what is sometimes believed about Hamlet, but they do have questions about life, and the afterlife.

Shakespeare uses Hamlets feelings to express his own, as well as those of all people. Because of this, Hamlet has become a classic. Hamlets character represents people in all circumstances. He questions everything, and has experienced love, hate, betrayal, depression, grief, and anger. The reoccurring themes of revenge, death, and right and wrong, can relate to anyone. People experience these things every day. Because Hamlet represents everyone, the soliloquy in which he questions his life has become very famous. To be, or not to be, that is the question... This single line in poetry has been remembered because, in fact, that is the question.

Examine Romeos final speech. Explain what is going on and how you would advise an actor to perform it. Describe Baz Luhrmanns film of this scene.

Romeo and Juliet is a famous love story, written in 155 by William Shakespeareand the australian director Baz Luhrmanns fame. Romeo and Juliet meet, fall in love and want to get married but they cant because of their families hate, the story ends with their tragic deaths as they both kill themselves. Love stories and poetry were very fashionable in 155 so the play fitted in very well. The Elizabethans also believed in fate so this could have influenced Shakespeare.

In this essay I will study Romeos final speech and expain what is happening. I will also explain how I would advise an actor to perform it.

Romeos final speech is a moment of high drama and tension in the play. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to build the tension. The speech reflects Romeos state of mind.

Write your Romeo anfd juliet research paper

The speech can be divided into seven sections depending on who Romeo is talking to. In the first part of the speech he is thinking abuot death. Romeo expresses his confusion, he says that death should bring clarity

‘How oft when men are at the point of death

Have they been merry, which their keepers call

A light’ning before death’.

However Romeo has not experienced this ‘light’ning’. He is more confused than ever.

Shakespeare uses the word ‘light’ning’ very cleverly in this soliloquy. The word ‘light’ning’ has a double meaning, one being a lightening of a burden, so he doesn’t have any worries when he dies, the other being the lightening that lights up everything, so he can see it all clearly.

In Wuthering Heights Catherine can often be seen to be portraying two different characters, and it is for this reason that she is referred to as having a “double character”. In this essay it will be examined as to when this is the case, and possibly give explanation as to why she has developed them.

Wuthering Heights is seen to be very hypocritical of the social conventions around the Victorian Era, the time when it was written. Bronte pays particular attention throughout the novel to the stigmas which surrounded males and more significantly females, in the way in which they were expected to look and act. In Victorian times, the women were repressed and often seen to be kept by their husbands, a theory which Catherine, and also Emily Bronte did not completely agree with or accept.

In chapter 8 where Catherine is referred to as having a double character, Nelly Dean narrates that Catherine would almost change her personality depending on the company she was keeping. When at home at Wuthering Heights, she was,

“the queen of the countryside she took no peer and she did turn out to be a naughty, headstrong creature”

This was unheard of at the time, and in most cases would have been suppressed at an early age, had she not had,

“the bonniest eye, and sweetest smile, and lightest foot in the parish, and after all, I believe she meant no harm”

Chapter 5 is significant in the way in which it shows Catherine, even though rebellious, to be a genuine character, who doesn’t let any stereotypes restrict her from doing as she pleases. She plays in the fields with Heathcliff, by doing so breaking all female conventions at the time. When Cathys father Earnshaw is near death, her character remains “bold and saucy, still defying us with her ready words”. When Earnshaw questions her defiance of femininity,

“why canst thou not always be a good lass Cathy?”

she yet again allows her rebellious nature to show,

“why cannot you always be a good man, Father?”

This is also an accurate example of the traditions and acceptable behaviour seen in the Victorian times. By “good lass” Earnshaw could also be referring to not just her mean streak, but her refusal to conform to the female conventions.

In chapter 7 however, Catherine, who had been residing at Thrushcross Grange whist her ankle healed, was seen to turn into a lady, “her manners much improved”

“with fine clothes and flattery, which she took so readily, so that instead of a wild hatless little savage jumping into the house, there lighted from a handsome black pony a dignified person with ringlets falling from the cover of a feathered beaver”

This perhaps is the first time at which we are aware of the so called double character. She is almost seen to be on show at T.G. , where she is not among her family and therefore feels that she must act more feminine than she has done up to this point. However, as soon as she is reintroduced to Heathcliff, when she returned to Wuthering Heights, we see a temporary revert to her former self,

“catching glimpse of her friend in his concealment, flew to embrace him, so bestowed seven or eight kisses on his cheek”

This is the first occasion when we realise that her reformed, mature and ladylike character is only used when required, and that it changes as and when is necessary. However, this chapter is seen to be a change, marking the end of what Heathcliff and Cathy used to have, and idealist world where they had solely each other. This is because Cathy has no moved partly into a different social sphere, which regrettably Heathcliff cannot follow.

Catherines double character is very obvious in this chapter as it encaptures both parts of the life which Catherine so eagerly wants to live. Her desire to inhabit two worlds, the moors and the wilderness with Heathcliff, and the parlour and elegant lifestyle with Edgar Linton shows her double character, as neither life is similar.

However, in the next chapters, we see the two characters nearly cross. Whilst preparing for a visit from Edgar, Heathcliff mocks her dressing up,

“why have you got that silly frock on then?”

And when Edgar arrives, though Heathcliff leaves, Nelly Dean stays on as chaperone, much to Catherines annoyance. She then,

“supposing Edgar couldn’t see her, snatched the cloth from my (Nellys) hand and pinched her, with a prolonged wrench, very spitefully on the arm”

When Nelly tells Edgar, Cathy hastily denies it, “I didn’t touch you, you lying creature”

Therefore trying to conceal her other self, which some might argue is her true character. They manipulative way in which she pinches Nelly echoes this. Cathy later sums up this with her reference of her own blood being hotter than Edgars, referring to a difference in their personalities, hot and cold.

In conclusion, Cathy does portray a double character to suit two very different existences. One is for Edgar, who by being with conforms with all the Victorian ideas, restricting her in thought and deed, and the other for the love of Heathcliff, her natural self in which conformity is not even a thought, in which two people with such a bond can be together regardless of circumstances and social conventions

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” are two works of literature that one would think would not be comparable. “The Lottery” is a story about foreshadowing while “Trifles” is a play and portrays the uglier side of life for women in the early 100’s in a round about nice kind of way. The main characters are both women who lived at the wrong time in American History and were ultimately looked down upon because of their gender. Their lives were both filled with solitude, injustice and inequality. The issues that Tessie, the main character from “The Lottery” and Mrs. Wright, the main character in “Trifles”, are the same issues that every woman will or had to deal just as Mrs. Hale says in “Trifles” “We all go through the same things it’s all just a different kind of the same thing” (118).

“The Lottery” is a prime example for how women were treated back before the 1th Amendment (women received the right to vote). Throughout the short story the women were constantly in the background, always looking around to see where their husbands were or how they were acting. The women were ultimately treated to a life of injustice. When the important meeting or lottery as it is called in the story, Tessie was late. When she finally got to the meeting the Mr. Summers told her it was nice that she could join then and she coyly responded with “[w]ouldn’t have me leave m’ dishes in the sink, now, would you Joe” (1). Men believed it was the women’s job to stay at home do the ditches, watch the children, and the house. clean This quote was a key example of how men felt about women and their roles in society at that time.

When talking about injustice, one is talking about a bias towards someone or something. At the time period when “The Lottery” and “Trifles” were writer there wasn’t just injustice but there was also inequality. Not only did Tessie have to deal with this, but Mrs. Wright almost had to deal with it too. After the ladies figured out that Mrs. Wright did indeed kill her husband they vowed not to turn her in. The reason for this is because of the injustice and inequality she would have received if she were to go to trial for murder. Back at that point in life women couldn’t vote, be on a jury, or even work for that matter. Since women couldn’t be on a jury that leaves all white males, and at that time black males couldn’t be on a jury either. This would have left Mrs. Wright with a guilty charge faster than you could even say guilty. The males stuck with their kind back then, and since one of their brothers was killed, as they would have seen it for no reason and would have put her away for good.

Inequality not only plagued women and African Americans back in the early 100’s it is still plaguing them today. However, now all minorities are plagued with it as well. It is still very difficult for a woman and an African American, and other minorities, male or female to get a job with leadership over a large group of people. Take the President for example, there still hasn’t been a woman or any other minority to become president yet, or become CEO of a fortune 500 company. The white man is still locking its jaw of power and control, things haven’t changed all that much. When Tessie ran late to the lottery she had to explain herself, when Tessie lost or won the lottery (which every way one would like to look at it) she wasn’t even allowed to hold up that parchment of paper. Mr. Summers, the head of the lottery said “[s]how us her paper, Bill” (15). It wasn’t good enough for Tessie to hold up the paper; Bill had to be the one, he had to show he was in charge.

Women do have more rights and say today than they once did. The American society has changed for the better in a lot of situations. Women are allowed to drive vehicles now, work, and even get a divorce if one desirers. Women are even allowed to socialize when one feels the urge or necessity to. This was not the case back when these two stories were written. Tessie and Mrs. Wright both lived there lives in solitude. Women weren’t allowed to do a whole lot outside of cleaning, cooking, watching kids if they had any, and sewing in the early to mid 100’s. That’s what they did, and that’s how their role in society was valued. In “Trifles” Mrs. Hale says to Mrs. Peters about Mrs. Wright “come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird” (1180). What Mrs. Hale was saying here was that Mrs. Wright used to be go out and have a good time at town socials but since she got married the freeness in her got taken away from her husband. Her husband pretty much locked her up in the house and that’s where her wings were allowed to fly. That was the case for the majority of women back at that time period.

As we can all see life for a woman back in the early 100’s was a terrible place to be. The women had no rights, no say, and ultimately didn’t have any dignity at all. All that they had or claimed to have was a spot in the household. Treating women as objects and not letting them live there own life’s was a very cruel way of doing things back in that time period. It is a very good thing that we as a society have moved away from treating women the way we used to or the wrong way and moved to more of an equal society.

Do you have big dreams of playing your favorite sport of basketball at the college level , but have no idea how to secure your dreams ? Well if your name is not Lebron James or one of those outstanding athletes with countless school programs knocking down your door, then this is your opportunity to reach out and secure your vision. I, myself have great dreams of playing basketball on the college level and maybe the professional level also. And I’m positive that I’m close to achieving my goals because I’ve had the opportunity of speaking one on one with recruiters from some of the best athletic programs in the nation. I think it would be accurate to assert that they have imparted to me knowledge and expertise of the necessary components of a prospective recipient of an athletic scholarship. The most important thing you can do as a player is make sure you worry about what you can do to help yourself. In the overall process, a potential player may be overlooked or not recruited by a program for various reasons. Regardless of the reason, your personal goal is to be an individual who is not overlooked. These are three steps that you should consider in order to make that basketball scholarship a reality. You need to practice hard, study hard, and maintain a great attitude. The first and most important point to comprehend is that scholarships are earned not handed out . Thus, in order to make yourself scholarship material you have to practice. You have to put yourself in the best possible position to be noticed and evaluated. The only way to do this is to dedicate yourself to the pursuit of perfection. So if it takes 500 jump shots a day or running 0 laps around the gym or hours in the weight room every day, then it’s definitely worth it. The important thing though is to practice the fundamentals, which is basically the simplest but most effective way to play the game. Truth is, college recruiters absolutely love players who are fundamentally sound. But don’t let all this time spent on your individual skills blind your eyes to the fact that you are part of a team. And though coaches like players with exceptional individual skills, they definitely love players who make their teams better. Teamwork is essential and success is the by-product of outstanding leadership inspired by selfless commitment. So don’t forget that basketball is 10% physical and 0% mental. Therefore, your intellect is imperative in getting that greatly desired scholarship. Maintaining excellent grades is a good way of sending a message to college coaches that you are serious about your future . You must understand that coaches are looking for students who understand the importance of their education. For example, I knew of a player who was a very good basketball prospect. This boy could jump out the gym, but he didn’t keep his head in his books. He felt as though his amazing talent could make up for the fact that he didn’t do well in school. So don’t let your grades stand in the way of that scholarship offer because even one low grade could make the difference. You can control how much effort you put into your studying ; also keep in mind that the better your grades are the greater the number of schools, who will look at you. Also SAT scores can make a difference with the caliber of schools that you attract. A combination of a high grade point average and a good SAT score could make your dream of getting that scholarship a reality. With improved basketball skills and the improved grades, all we need now to complete this package is the right attitude. The quickest way to not get a scholarship is to be a problem child; coaches today don’t want to deal with bad attitudes, selfish players , guys with baggage, guys who hang out with the wrong crowds... you get the message. Understand that college coaches are working to find out more about you than you could ever imagine. They talk to your teachers, guidance counselors, your coach, your teammates, and basically anyone that can give them an idea of what you are like. The kid that is such a great player, but maintains such a humble glow is priceless. That guy that can draw the attention of everyone that he comes into come into contact with, because he captivates them with his smile and his breathtaking presence. Those three points should give you a good start on the process of attaining a scholarship. Also critical to this entire process, is for you, your parents and your parents to sit down and come up with an honest appraisal of your game. All players aren’t major college players. What matters most is the enjoyment you get from it not what level you play on. Many times you may come across miserable Division 1 players and on the other hand, very happy Division and players. But you know what after all that hard work and all that fake smiling you better be happy at the highest college level. God knows, I would be.
