A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, is a gruesome tale of the French Revolution. There are multiple layers and topics to this intricate story. There is vengeance, resurrection, sacrifice, death, passion, and the value of life. One of the ways

that ial to explaining the themes, understanding the complex thoughts and characters is through the symbolism. Symbolism is when an author uses an act or an object to represent something larger then that entity. Dickens takes very simple objects, and gives them a meaning that makes the themes come to life.

One of the most reoccurring symbols is the wine. It resembles blood, and when a book is about war, it tends to be a crucial part of the story. The first place that it is seen is on page 4. It states “A large cask of wine had been dropped and broken, in the street. The accident had happened in getting it out of a cart the cask had tumbled out with a run, the hoops burst, and it lay on the stones just outside the door of the wine-shop, shattered like a walnut-shell. All the people within reach had suspended their business, or their idleness, to rub to the spot and drink the wine.” Since the wine represents blood, it is a horrible image. It is as though blood was spilt all over the streets. This shows that the people were very blood thirsty. They were so craving for blood, for the right to kill, that they were licking it up off of the ground. When I read this, it made the revolution come a live. It seems to me as though it’s feeding its people, its army. In order to prepare and army, it is necessary to train them to kill. By the barrel being spilt, and the people jumping towards this chance, it seems that the revolution is training its’ people to want blood, to lust after it.

. It says when describing the memorable storm in London, “sweep of water...crash, fire and rain”. This quote can be used to explain the symbol of water and storms on two different levels. It can be said to help understand Darny, or it can be used to support the pre figuration or representation of the revolution. When discussing it on a personal level, it brings about the thoughts of cold hearted, hard to reach or communicate to. The idea of not really being able to understand a person comes into your mind. The images of being locked in eternal frost-never to discover appear. Darny was a man who had a second identity. He was frozen in life that he had to hold this back. Rather, when looking at it as symbolizing the revolution it shows that the revolution is dreadful, appalling and scary. It brings such havoc as natural disasters.

Madame Defarge is not your typical woman. Even though it seems on the surface that she is a good housewife since she is always knitting, her knitting is really her anger and plot for revenge. When a person thinks of knitting, they usually think of warmth and kindness, the products of something knitted such as a blanket. As Madame Defarges’ name comes up, it brings about a feeling of harshness, brutality, and a certain chill. This is because Madame Defarge is knitting a death list. She is sewing in all the names of the people to whom she wishes to kill. The knitting is symbolizing her brutality and the harshness of women. It helped me understand the story better by showing me that not all women sat at home in the kitchen. Even if her intentions were not marvelous, it gave me a better feeling of women at the time and their role in everyday life and the revolution.

Rather then the last few symbols that have been fairly general, the next are more personal. They are in little scenes that give us some insight on the characters. This is impertinent to the story since Dickens only describes the characters as one dimensional.

A good example of this is when the wax is dripping or running down the candle. Melting wax that runs down a candle is called a winding sheet. Before body bags were invented, the dead were wrapped in a length of cloth called a winding sheet. The winding sheet of a candle is used to represent death. It drips down on Carton while he is sleeping. It is as though a body bag is being placed onto him. There is this symbolism of death and tragedy. The imagery of someone being wrapped in a body bag while they are still alive is horrifying, yet it is also a great example of foreshadowing for Carton’s death.

Sydney Carton dies as in place of Darnay. Carton dies so that others may live. In his death he atones for the sins and is forgiven. He can be symbolized upon as a Christ figure in this sense. He is dieing for a greater cause and some of his last words were, “I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”(51)He is declaring that he will be resurrected just as Jesus had said. Those may not even be his words, but rather Christ’s words. Even in his name it self there is possible reference to religion. The name Sydney is derived from the Saint Denis, who was a patron saint of Paris and was a martyr who died by decapitation, foreshadowing Cartons death. This also creates a connection to him and the church. ger the point that symbolism helps us understand the characters; I will show how you can get that he was an alcoholic. Saint Denis is derivative of Dionysus. Dionysus, also known as Bacchus, was the ancient Greek god of wine, a symbol of Cartons alcoholism.

Another character which we are given some insight on through symbolism is Jerry Cruncher. Jerry has a tendency to dig up graves for scientists. He is often referred to as a resurrection man. He refers to his body snatching business as fishing. He is fishing the ground for dead bodies. When Barsad engages Madame Defarge in a seemingly casual conversation about Gaspard, he is really fishing for information. The symbolism of the fishing helps us see that these two characters are a foil of each other. It would have been hard to notice without this hint of play on words.

One last use is in the court case. Dickens, as you know, is very lengthy on details. When he is describing the court room, he uses the word “buzz”. Literally it means that the people were excited and anxious. It also creates the image of flies searching for a body to feast upon. This is again a symbol that the people are blood thirsty and are craving for a revolution.

This sage of love and death uses symbolism and imagery to enhance the quality of the story. It takes the story to a different level, and helps explain many of the simpler ideas.

According to belief, everyone in this life has been given certain talents. These talents should be used as a way to give thanks for the giving of them. Out of all the things that I have learned to do in my life so far, music has been the one outstanding skill that I have acquired and used. I am used to hearing others say, “Trippe, you have a real talent and should put it to the best use”. When it came time to choose a career, music kept coming up, but I had to look closely at what music meant to me. Its importance was never questioned. Determining whether I should use music, as a profession, required much contemplation. Throughout my internal search for answers, I came to realize just why music has remained one of the most important things in my life. It is the single most effective way for me to express what is inside me at any given time. The purpose music serves for me depends on my mood and what is going on in my life.

In the fifteen years that I studied music, practicing for weekly lessons was never something I found to be necessary. Therefore, I would sit at my piano and play compositions that were not in my beginning books, as they bored me. I could spend hours playing patterns that only I could hear in my head. The monotony of beginning music led me to explore many ways to enjoy my piano for something other than practicing for my weekly piano lesson. As I grew older I began to experience the life of a concert pianist. It was here that I truly began to understand what I enjoyed about the piano; performance. As I played around the state, I could feel my skill blossoming. Life continued and I realized that I was using piano for two reasons, one was to express my feelings and emotions, and the second was to please others.

As I continued to grow, new emotions entered my life along with events that made me really happy, worried, angry, or just sad. My mouth seemed to keep me in trouble, so I looked for another way to express my feelings and stay out of trouble. Playing, my piano became like a therapy at times. During times of anxiety, music was a way to express the turmoil I felt inside and I used it as a crutch to get me to better times. I never realized how much I needed music in my life until I moved to Statesboro and had to leave my piano at home. Many times I would find myself wishing for a way to play. Several times I have gone home to see my family, walked through the house, went to my piano, and began a long session of playing. After a time, I once again felt like myself and was able to sit with my family and friends without feeling as keyed up inside.

Music can also take me deeper into my emotions of the time or change my moods all together. For example, if I am feeling happy and hear great upbeat-music, I feel exalted to new heights. If I am a little low, sad music slices my soul. However, when I hear a lot of music of a mood opposite to my own, I will eventually feel the way the music sways me to feel. I have even learned to use it for this purpose. It is no longer merely an element of entertainment; it is a part of me in all my many faces.

Buy The Music In Me term paper

Self-expression without music would be less that effective for me. It is a way for me to express my feeling; a crutch when I am down and a pedestal in times of joy. Though I don’t choose to use music as a career, I will always choose it as an expression of my inner self.

Economic welfare is the base of two parties in trade. It can be quantified as the sum of consumer surplus and producer surplus.

Consumer surplus is the amount that a buyer is willing to pay for a product minus the amount the buyer actually pays while producer surplus refers to the difference between the price that a producer is willing to accept and the actual price. As we can see from figure 1, consumer surplus is the area below the demand curve and above the market price. However, producer surplus is the area above the demand curve and below the market price. Needless to say, the sum of the two parts is called economic welfare. Economic welfare will change while the market structure changes. In this essay, I will analyze how economic welfare changes if a market structure changing from perfect competition to a monopoly. However, whether the monopolist charges a single price or a multi price will affect the outcome.

Generally speaking, perfect competition is a market structure where there are a large number of firms and any individual firm, or any individual consumer, will have no effect on market price. It can exist in a market only if the following conditions are satisfied. Firstly, there are a lot of buyers and sellers. Secondly, buyers have perfect knowledge. Furthermore, units of the good sold by different sellers are identical and last, there are no barriers to entry into or exit from the market. Every firm is a ¡®price taker¡¯ and thus had no influence on the market price. However, a firm in a competitive market, like most other firms in the economy, tries to maximize profit. As we know, at the profit maximizing level of output, marginal revenue and marginal cost are exactly equal. This is a general rule for profit maximization. Though in the short run, firms in the perfect competitive market may make a supernomoral profit or loss, in the long run, all the firms just can make a normal profit at an equilibrium price which is determined in the industry by the intersection of MC and MR curve. The reason is clear. In the long run, if firms are making supernomoral profits, new firms will be attracted into the industry as there is few barriers to enter. Thus firms have to reduce their price to ensure output. The price will fall until it gets to the equilibrium point where the market price is just equal to the firm¡¯s long run average cost. I.e. firms can just make normal profit to cover their cost.

By contrast, a firm is considered a monopoly if it is the only seller of a good or service with no substitutes. A monopoly firm is a price maker while a competitive firm is a price taker.

Write your monopoly and perfect competition research paper

The fundamental cause of monopoly is barriers to entry. It has three sources Ownership of a key resource.

Government gives a single firm the exclusive right to produce some good, such as patent and copyright laws.

Costs of production make a single producer more efficient than a large number of producers.

Like a competitive firm, a monopoly maximizes profit by producing the quantity at

which marginal cost and marginal revenue are equal. Nevertheless, unlike a competitive firm, its price exceeds its marginal revenue, so its price exceeds marginal cost.

Figure 1 Firgure

As we can see, perfect competition and monopoly are two absolutely different types of market structure. Which is more efficient? Which has more economic welfare? Firstly, have a look at figure above.

There are two types of efficiency we should pay attention to---productive efficiency and allocative efficiency. Productive efficiency is achieved when the output is produced at a minimum average total cost. Clearly, from figure , we can easily get the conclusion that firms in perfect competition are more productively efficient.

However, economic welfare has a close relationship with the other type of efficiency---allocative efficiency. It is achieved when the value consumers place on a good or service equals the cost of the resources used up in production. (Price=Marginal cost) When this condition is satisfied, total economic welfare is maximized. Again, from figure , we may get the conclusion that allocative efficiency is maximized under perfect competitive conditions. As can be seen in figure , part of consumer surplus is transferred to producer surplus from the perfect competitive market to the monopoly situation. Monopolists control the quantity they produce in order to charge a high price. So they have not allocated the scared resources efficiently. What makes monopoly inefficient is the existence of the area that is a wedge between the consumer¡¯s willingness to pay and the producer¡¯s cost. It is called deadweight welfare loss. In monopoly, the price is higher; the consumer surplus is lower and the producer surplus is higher than a competitive industry. Moreover, the output is lower; the monopoly will lead to a lower overall level of economic welfare. Marginal cost is less that price, so there is allocative inefficiency.

Economics has championed the notion that the best guarantee of social welfare is competition, and perfect competition has always been its ideal

All of the above seems to imply that a monopoly necessarily leads to higher price, lower quantity, and deadweight losses relative to perfect competition. But this may not be true, because a monopoly may be able to achieve cost saving unavailable to smaller firms. Consolidation to serve larger number of consumers can allow the firm to take advantage of greater specialization, moving to a lower ATC and corresponding MC. A typical example is natural monopoly that exists when one firm can produce at a lower ATC than can two or more firms because of economies of scale. So we have two effects of greater concentration (fewer firms with greater market share each) in an industry. First, competition is reduced, which tends to drive price up. Second, cost savings may be realized from economies of scale, which tends to drive price down. Which effect dominates? This is an empirical question and highly relevant to many policy questions. Anyway, MC under monopoly is not always the same as under perfect competition. If it is lower, the economic welfare in monopoly will be much more that it is in perfect competition. Because the monopolist in this stage has lower cost thus they charge lower price and produce larger quantity.

In order to gain more profit, monopolists practices price discrimination. It is defined as charging different prices of a same product to different consumers on the basis of non-cost-related characteristics of the consumers.

Examples of price discrimination

Movie prices (for students and seniors)

Airline prices (for business and personal)

Grocery coupons (¡®smart¡¯ versus casual shoppers)

In general, the most important factor for price discrimination is distinguishing different elasticties, to isolate people who are more or less sensitive to price. People with more elastic demand will tend to be charged a lower price; people with more demand will tend to be charged a higher price.

Price discrimination has two main effects. Firstly, it tends to transfer wealth from consumers to producers. Second, it tends to decrease deadweight loss for both consumers and producers.

Now look at figure 4.

MC

CS

DWL

PH

PM

PL

PS

D

QH QM QL

The area between PH and PM and to the left of QH is transferred from the CS to the PS, from consumers who have bought at the single-price monopoly price PM and now buy at the higher price PH. On the other hand, the triangle between PM and PL, between QM and QL, and below the demand curve, is an additional to CS that could have been deadweight loss under a single-price monopoly (because they would not have bought the good at all). The PS is everything left between the demand curve and MC that is not shaded in as CS or DWL.

So consumers as a whole may or may not benefit from price discrimination; it depends on which consumers one has in mind, and how the firm discriminates. As I mentioned before, the DWL is very important. To the extent that price discrimination reduces the size of DWL, it is more efficient.

Furthermore, if a firm can charge a different price for each consumer, with the exactly equal to the maximum price the consumer will pay, then perfect price discrimination occurs. There is no DWL under perfect price discrimination.

Obviously, the output of a multi-price monopoly will be higher than with a non-price discriminating monopoly. The deadweight loss is eliminated. Thus the economic welfare has been increased. Moreover, the increased output may lead to economies of scale and increased productive efficiency. On the other hand, the firm may use the profits from one market segment to allow low predatory prices in another. In the long run this increases monopoly power and prices are likely to rise.

(Adapt from ¡®Introductory Economics¡¯)

In conclusion, the ideal economic welfare can be gained in perfect competitive market. Firms in this market structure produce the largest quantity and sell their products at the lowest market prices. They produce goods and allocate resources efficiently. Monopolists, on the other hand, produce in a limited output in order that they can keep the market price high. This causes a deadweight welfare loss and reduces the economic welfare. However, there are some arguments for monopoly as well. They claim that monopolist may have access to economies of scale and have lower cost in production. So the sum of consumer surplus and producer surplus may be higher than in the perfect competition at this time. The problem is controversial and it is hard to get an answer. Anyway, if the monopoly practices price discrimination, they can make more profit. Moreover, economic welfare will increase owing to the reduce of deadweight welfare loss in this way.

Propaganda is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further ones cause or to damage an opposing cause.” One theme of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is the power of propaganda and how it can be used to achieve social control. Orwell supports this theme with his use of plot, symbolism, and use of the protagonist. I will compare the use of propaganda in Animal Farm to Adolph Hitler’s use of propaganda in his quest to become one of the 0th century’s most powerful dictators.

In the story Animal Farm, there are many different similarities between the characters in the story and people in real life. By comparing Napoleon’s use of propaganda to the way Hitler used propaganda, I will illustrate the manner in which both subjects achieved the result they desired.

Napoleon craved power and control and used propaganda as a means to achieve this goal. Napoleon serves as the story’s protagonist because of his need for power and desire to achieve complete control of the farm. One of the antagonists in the story is Snowball. Snowball was a pig that was “quicker in speech and more inventive, but was not considered to have the same depth of character.” When debating over whether or not to build the windmill, it became clear to Napoleon that Snowball could deliver a better and more convincing speech than he could. If Snowball were to gain the support of all the animals, it would certainly hinder Napoleon’s plan to control the farm. Napoleon puts an end to this threat by calling in the dogs and having Snowball chased off of the farm, thereby securing his place as “leader.” Once in control of the farm, Napoleon had to make sure that no one would challenge his decisions. To do this Napoleon resorted to the use of propaganda. By spreading rumors about Snowball, he could persuade the other animals to believe that Snowball was a traitor and a coward.

Napoleon’s strongest propaganda tool is Squealer. Squealer is “a clever and cunning pig that is intelligent, as well as a persuasive speaker.” He plays a major role in the spread of propaganda in many ways. One example of propaganda being used to Napoleon’s advantage is when the animals question the unbalanced distribution of milk and apples among the animals. Squealer convinced the animals that it was for their benefit. Squealer is less than truthful when he says the pigs dislike milk and apples and must eat them because they contain substances that are necessary to the health of a pig. Without apples and milk the pigs will not be able to perform their management duties and Mr. Jones may come back and take control of the farm. This propaganda effectively instills fear in the animals because they believe their leaders are sacrificing for the good of everyone on the farm, so they no longer feel the need to question the motives of the pigs.

Custom essays on Comparison of propaganda usage between Hitler and Napoleon

One of the most influential dictators of the 0th century was Adolph Hitler. Like Napoleon, he also used propaganda as a means to gain social control. Just as Napoleon had his “Squealer,” so did Hitler in Paul Joseph Goebbels. Goebbels was chosen as propaganda leader of the Nazi Party and his work as a propagandist significantly aided Hitler’s rise to power. Hitler used many forms of propaganda but was most successful in using words. Hitler made many enthusiastic speeches and gained the sympathy of the German people while at the same time gaining their support. By gaining social backing, Adolf Hitler could take control and invoke a revolution that would cause political chaos and provide Hitler with the perfect opportunity to become dictator. Although Napoleon was not a great speaker, he did have Squealer who would actually speak to the other animals and tell them what to do and what to think. Successfully persuading the other animals to do as they are told, Napoleon could do anything he wanted and no one would stop him or have the desire to stop him until it was too late.

I found it symbolic that Napoleon had three dogs escort him around the farm for protection and intimidation. This is similar to the way Hitler displayed a large military army in front of the German people as a morale booster, and in front of the world to intimidate and discourage other countries from either attacking or resisting.

One of the many underlying plots in this story is the conflict between truth and lies. In order for Napoleon to take control of the farm successfully he must constantly distort the truth about certain past events and even change the laws they created to suit his own needs. This, of course, is one of the very purposes of propaganda. Napoleon directs Squealer to tell the other animals that they have enough food when in fact starvation was staring them in the face. Another example of this indirection is when they wrote the original fifth commandment that said, “No animal shall drink alcohol.” Later in the story Napoleon comes to enjoy alcohol and has Squealer rewrite the fifth commandment to say “no animal shall drink alcohol in excess.” This shows that Napoleon is only interested in his own selfish desires, but by this time the animals believe without question anything that he says.

Under Hitler, worker protections were dismantled, one by one. Soon workers were laboring for longer hours for less pay. Since there were no trade unions left, the workers had no recourse. The Social Democrats were not organized and did not offer a solid front for opposing Hitler and his plans. The people soon found themselves overwhelmed by a highly organized and aggressive army of Nazi Party appointees who did whatever Hitler told them without question. This runs closely similar to what happened on the Animal Farm. As the animals surrendered all control to Napoleon, the lives of the animals worsened. Napoleon’s plan was not for the animals’ benefit at all. In both Hitler’s and Napoleon’s cases, they took advantage of the power that the people entrusted to them.

Both Napoleon and Hitler rose to the highest attainable position in their land. Their similar individual strengths allowed them to accomplish this. They both had a mastery of propaganda. More importantly, they knew how to use propaganda to unite and manipulate their people into following their leads, no matter how questionable. Once they had public support, they could and would use fear and loyalty to further push the boundaries of how far their society would go for them to be the ultimate super power. Napoleon and Hitler managed to destroy many lives and completely change the social, economical, political, and geographic structures of each of their worlds. Hitler said, “Without law and order our nation could not survive.” Napoleon and Hitler sought law and order in the worst ways possible and many suffered the consequences.

Struggle.

Jason awoke in a sweat again. The red digital display of the clock radio

job with Mat Johnson. It was the First National Bank on High Street. As soon

as they started grabbing cash the cops were there. Jason had noticed and had

ran out the back door, but Mat was too slow - he got shot in the head. It

had been the end of Jason LennoxÕs career as an armed robber, even though he

thrived on the feeling he got when running out of a bank, a bag full of cash

in one hand, a sawn off rifle in the other. He loved out-running the police,

jumping fences and dodging through thin alleyways, but since Mat died, he

couldnÕt bring himself to do it again even though he wanted to.

Although Jason was no longer an armed robber, he still had to get money, and

now he had to resort to a different way of thieving. Now, he would visit a

bank at about two or three oÕclock in the morning, pick the lock on the

door, destroy the security system and crack the vault. This method was a lot

slower than armed robbery, and a lot less fun, but it brought in as much as

a hold up, sometimes even more.

It was September 14th, two thirty am. Jason stepped silently from the small

red hatchback parked in the street outside of the Federation Bank Building.

He stood for a moment, letting his eyes scan the street, and on finding no

one, grabbed his bag and jogged quietly across the road to the front doors

of the bank. There were two pin tumbler locks protecting the doors, but he

quickly picked them both and entered the building, immediately scanning the

room for security devices. There was a movement sensor in the far left

corner of the room, focused to the right of his head. He slowly and

carefully drew his gun and put a bullet through the sensorÕs lens. With the

security out of the way, he made his way to the back of the bank and down

the small corridor to the vault. The vault was protected with a large metal

grill, and although it had a lock on it, when he tried to pick it, it only

bent his tools. Although this hindered him, he had another plan, and dug

through his bag of equipment to find his electric drill and a small bit. He

quickly drilled through all six pins in the lock and he gently pushed the

grill open.

When he reached the vault, Jason knew exactly what to do. It was a

combination-style lock, but also needed to be opened with a key. Jason

quickly removed a hacksaw from his bag and after a few minutes of furious

sawing, had removed the dial from the vault. Pulling out his drill again, he

began to drill through the pins of both the key, and combination locks. He

had drilled through two of the pins on the key lock when he heard the noise.

He stopped instantly and crawled out into the main room of the bank. There

was a security officer on the other side of the glass shining his torch in!

As the beam swung towards Jason, he quickly ducked into the corridor and

immediately drew his gun. He could here the door opening and loaded his

pistol. As he lifted his gun and got ready to fire, he remembered poor Mat.

He just couldnÕt bring himself to do it. Instead, he ran quickly (but

silently) down the corridor, retrieved his bag of equipment and climbed to

the top of the open grill. The footsteps came down the corridor and the

torch beam of the security officer was on the vault. He started running, and

was soon inspecting the vault.

Jason stood on top of the grill, breathing hard, a bead of sweat trickling

down his face, landing on his sports shoe. It was like the old days for him.

The hiding, the chase, the fear and the adrenaline mixed together in a

potent cocktail. The security guard turned and surveyed the room quickly and

radioed in his find. Jason saw this and quickly and quietly climbed down to

Personal Goals For Future Advancement within Synthes

Synthes is a dynamic, growth-oriented company in a highly exciting and challenging field. There has been tremendous success and growth since it began marketing the Arbeitsgemeinschft fur Ostiosynthesefragen (AO) Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF) system of orthopedic instruments and implants. Advancement opportunities are unlimited with the right educational, technical, and professional skills.

Twelve years ago when I was employed by the Synthes organization, the company was in its early stages of growth. As with any company, growth and advancement opportunities are usually slow in the beginning and the numbers of employees are few. The company employed approximately twenty-five employees whose shills were from the mechanical trade industry. These mechanical skills were basically trade school taught, acquired from a previous means of employment, or through high school classes. Of course cooking and sewing classes for me in high school did not meet these mechanical skills. If employees did not possess the required mechanical skills, they were taught by means of on-the-job training, which at the time, the company could afford to do.

As with any company growth, growth and advancement are slow in the beginning. When the company began to feel the rewards of success, as in the case of Synthes, growing pains developed, technical requirements increased and new positions were created allowing for advancement opportunities. Some other contributing factors for advancement the market was new to the industry, allowing minimal outside competition, fewer internal employees to compete with, basic knowledge of the company’s internal systems, and product knowledge. Synthes considered employees personal skills in communication, work ethic, initiative, past performance evaluations, and peer recommendations as individual ways for advancing up the “corporate ladder.” The educational level an individual had was not that critical, and in a few short years, I was personally able to advance to my current position as a Supervisor.

Order Custom Personal Strenghts and Weakness paper

Synthes, now with a few successful products in the market, was beginning to feel the demand and pressure to continue developing new products. Growth was happening rapidly, and the standard for mechanical and technical skills increased. The bar was raised. The company could no longer spend the time continuing on-the-job training. Where internal competition was once the norm for advancement, Synthes was seeking employees with much higher, marketable skill levels. These are the employees who are moving up the corporate ladder and I want to be one of them. It was time for me to start doing something, and that something was continuing my education!

By continuing my education at the University of Phoenix, I hope to develop new technical skills and fine-tune existing skills for continued success and advancement with Synthes. Some of the personal goals I would like to accomplish are in the following job performance areas

v Communication To have the ability to clearly present information verbally or written, to read and interpret information, and to listen well.

v Continuous Learning Having the ability to stay informed of current industry trends, and how and where can this information be obtained. To learn and apply new concepts, and identify own areas of self-development.

v Decisiveness The ability to stand by a decision, despite disagreement from others. To take quick action in a crisis situation. The ability to make difficult management decisions, and to obtain quick solutions to a situation where all information may not be available.

v Influence and Persuasion The ability to convince others in either positive or negative situations, and adapt presentations to a particular audience.

v Innovation Engage in continuous system improvements, challenge existing practices and establish new methods, and evaluate new technology as solutions to existing problems.

v Resource Management Experience with budget planning, identify and fulfill staffing requirements, and ensure that others have needed equipment and staffing.

v Visioning Pursue potential expansion opportunities for the organization, champion different ideas to be a leader in the market, identify long term goals, and communicate vision that will inspire others.

I strongly believe through development of the above-mentioned skills, fine-tuning existing skills, continuous learning, and achieving a higher education, will enable me for future advancement within Synthes. Once I have accomplished these goals, I will be a more valuable asset and contributor to Synthes.

The standard for advancement at Synthes has risen. A trade or high school education was acceptable years ago when entering the job market. However, because of innovation, visioning, continuous learning, and improved technology, the levels of educational requirements are higher. Higher education will allow me to develop personally, academically, and acquire marketable characteristics for the future. Who knows what the future will bring?

Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey” begins with the common poetical convention of vivid imagery. Noticeably, the poem is written in unrhymed verse. The words, although unrhymed, create their own beauty, in that they paint magical and mystical landscapes in the reader’s consciousness. The poem then goes on to detail the fact that the scene has remained unchanged for the past five years, describing the landscape as rich and serene. There is a comfort, not only to the speaker, but also to the reader, in the landscape, and early on in the poem, a theme of solitude and hermitage is established.

Later, in the second stanza, the speaker goes on to describe some of his vivid memories, transferring their image to the reader. Through the progression of memory the speaker is able to leap beyond the constraints of reality and begins to see things in a new sense, he reaches a purer mind. The narrator begins the second stanza by sharing his memories of nature. The beauteous forms or memories of nature, have sustained the speaker with sensations sweet in lonely rooms…of towns and cities. The speaker later goes on to describe that these memories have comforted him during the period in which he lived in an urban setting, establishing the fact that he strongly believes in the restoring power of the memory. An equally notable convention in this portion of the poem is also Wordsworth’s use of the word “blood,” which serves as perhaps a metaphor for the river Wye (mentioned in the poem) running through the memory of the speaker as well.

Later, the speaker begins to question his own belief in the restoring power of the memory, but goes on to turn to the ruins of the abbey in solace, going on to relate his love of nature as being more mature (emotionally). Later, the speaker begins the final portion of the poem, pertaining to his sister, whom he had loved will all his heart. He addresses her as his “dearest Friend,” and compares her own pleasure, although simple, with his own at some earlier point in his life. He goes on to state his belief that she will benefit from the love of nature as he had earlier done (“..my former heart…”), and find the natural world as a sort of haven from the bustle of the growing city. This brings up the interesting note that the speaker seems to draw happiness and his (former) youthfulness equally from his sister and nature. But, in the end, it is nature that he wishes well.

The tone of the speaker throughout the poem is one that conveys a deep amount of not only gratitude, but respect, whether it pertains to his sister, or to the natural world, and its profound impact on eliciting an emotional response (from the poet). In the poem, it is obvious that the theme/convention that remained prevalent throughout the epoch of Romanticism, a respect/relation for/to nature, is utilized to the fullest extent. Nature, in essence, according to the poem, is a substance that is utilized in combating the emotional pain inherent in human growth. As mentioned, a prevalent, almost predominant theme throughout the work is the ability of nature to influence the memory, thus impacting the psyche of the individual, eliciting a response. Overall I found the poem to be mildly interesting, but moreover found its beauty in the fact that it created vivid images of rolling hills, etc. in my mind. As a wise man once said (or something to this effect) “an artist is like a painter, with the pen as his brush, and the paper as his canvas; he, like the artist, paints with words.”

Jacquelyn Fulton

I Can’t Dance Anymore

Can you imagine the atmosphere? You walk in a gentleman’s club; you hear loud music playing and see people everywhere. Mostly men, almost every man has a woman sitting next to him, smiling. You look over at me and think to yourself, “This girl is lucky, she has the easiest job in the world. She is making good money; in an entertaining environment.” What you do not see is how unhappy me and the other women in this club are. Being a dancer stinks. The job is very stressful, it gives you low self-esteem, and just like a drug, it is addictive. That is why I must stop, I cannot dance anymore.

In the past, I have seen several talk shows where young girls dream of becoming a dancer because they think dancing is fun and you make good money. There is not anything fun about dancing. Dancing is very stressful. I am always under pressure by management to sell drinks and club specials. There are always incidents because I am working with competitive females. If I am not willing to perform some type of sex act, I will make less money. It is even worse, for me being a straight female because 75 0% of the female dancers are either gay or bi-sexual.

Buy I Can't Dance Anymore term paper

My job is to make the customers in the club happy. Therefore, I am always pretending that I like someone that I do not know or like. When I am not doing that, I am pretending I am something that I am not just to make money.

After being a dancer for a while I began to develop low self-esteem. I have felt as if I can never look good enough for everyone. Someone is always making comments about my good features and making sure I am aware of my bad ones. I have been on 4-5 diets in the last two years because I am either too slim of too fat. I have not been completely happy with my overall appearance in almost 18 months. Since I am working with a variety of women, I am always compared to someone else, which does not heighten my self-esteem.

In the two years that I have been dancing, I have developed some very bad habits. I went from drinking one to two drinks per shift to drinking three to six drinks per shift. I feel like I am becoming an alcoholic because I work three to four shifts per week. I’ve also had a very hard time being in relationships with men because it’s like my mind is programmed to think the only thing men are good for is their money. I have been in two unhealthy relationships just for the money since I started dancing.

Looking at all these things, one might wonder why I am still dancing. Trying to stop dancing is just as hard as trying to stop smoking, it is addictive. After dancing for a while the money gets addictive and so does the work environment.

I have tried to stop dancing and go back in the workforce twice, but I always end up back in the club.

I would not recommend dancing as a career choice for any woman. The money is good, but it is not worth the chances a woman takes with her health or morality.

That is why I must stop, I cannot dance anymore.

Authors often use events and things to symbolize stages in someones life. Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing meaning of significance to objects, events, or relationships. In Beowulf, Beowulf fights Grendel, Grendels mother, and a fire-breathing dragon. In the anonymous epic Beowulf, Beowulfs battles symbolize the youth, adulthood, and old age of Beowulfs life. First, the battle with Grendel represents the youth of Beowulfs life. The typical youth is very brave and fights for fame. Beowulf shows how the battle with Grendel is a representation of the youth of Beowulfs life by going to Hrothgar and asking him if he can fight Grendel for him and his people. Beowulf shows this trait when he says, Grant me, then, lord and protector of this noble place, a single request! I have come so far, oh shelter of warriors and your peoples loved friend, that this one favor you should not refuse me. That I, alone and with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this Hell. Second, another trait that a typical youth has is that they dont want to be outwitted. They also dont want people to think poorly of them. Beowulf shows this when he hears that Grendel does not use any weapons to fight and so Beowulf says that he will not use any weapons because he wants Higlac to think worthy of him. Beowulf shows this trait when he says, I have heard, too, that the monsters scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Now will I. My lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid behind some broad linden shield my hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster. Third, the typical youth likes to brag about what they have done. Beowulf shows this third trait when he brags to Hrothgar about how he swam all the way over and killed all the monsters in the ocean. This is seen when Beowulf says, I swam in the Blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned. I have shown you how the battle with Grendel represents the youth of Beowulfs life. First, the battle with Grendels mother represents the adult stage of Beowulfs life. As adults get older they are less daring and more defensive. Beowulf shows this trait when he fights mail armor and a sword. This is seen when he goes to the lake where the monsters mother has her underwater lair. Then fully armored, he makes a heroic dive to the depth of the watery Hell. Second, as adults get older they are less daring and wait for the ballte to come to them. Instead of going to Hrothgar and asking to fight for him he waits and lets Hrothgar ask him. This is seen when Beowulf is awakened and called for again. I have shown you how the battle with Grendel s mother represents the adult stage of Beowulfs life.

I heard from my high school¡¦s English teacher that most of countries in the world have their own education system. They are different from each other. However, I didn¡¦t know much of them, because I didn¡¦t have a chance to study abroad. Two years ago I came to United States for my college education. During this time I completely understand the differences of the education system between Taiwan and U.S.A., especially in the middle school.

Let look at school ¡¥s experiences in Taiwan go to school six days a week, Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm. On Saturday, the school closes at noon. We usually have seven classes a day, 40 minutes each. The students have 10 minutes breaks between classes. During lunch, we have one hour break to go out to eat. Most of the schools require students to wear uniforms during the school day. If you are student in Taiwan you have to pay tuition beginning with the first grade. After ninth grade, every student has to take on examination to get in to high school. If your grade is below average point, then you cannot go to high school. So you have to study hard for your future life. That is why students in Taiwan don¡¦t have free time to do a lot of extra activities.

On the other hand, the students in the United States go to school five days a week, Monday to Friday form 8am to pm. They usually have four classes a day for 80 minutes each. Also they have 10 minutes breaks between classes. But they only have 40 minutes for lunch and they cannot leave school for lunch. The U.S.A. school does not require students to wear uniforms so they can wear what ever they want to wear. Before college American families do not have to pay any tuition for a public school education. But they have to pay an education tax to the government every year. The U.S.A. student does not have to pass any examination to get to the next grade level but they do have to take an examination called the SAT to show their academic level. Also most American schools provide a lot of student activity for their free time.

Overall, both side of the education system has their own advantage and disadvantage. The Taiwan¡¦s educations system more concentrates on students¡¦ academic skill in order to be more successful in their future. On the other hand, American¡¦s education system more cares on students¡¦ own interest. Let them have more free space to decide the future they like. And also by using student activities to make student get more social experiences and let them know how to deal with things in the real world.

I personally think that if anyone has chance to choose where to study, definitely they would choose United States. Taiwan¡¦s education system is too stressful for students and I don¡¦t think students can develop their best ability under this kind of stress. I hope that one day the education system in Taiwan would change to better condition for students.

Talents, experiences, achievements, unique points of view these qualities help determine weather or not applicants find success at college and weather or not they are ready to deal with the responsibility of independent living. Not surprisingly, these are the same requisite qualities needed to lead a successful life.

I owned my unique social experiences to my multicultural back ground. Born in the Philippines. When I left the Philippines for the United state at age of 0, I felt overwhelmed. Not only I need to learn a new language. I need to learn a new philosophy, one completely at odds with my culture upbringing. However, my experience helped me realize the pros and cons of American ways of capitalism.

When I first attended high school I had difficulty in understanding what the teacher was saying in class. Because I didn’t know or speak English at all. But I received relatively low grades with mostly B’ and C in my academic subjects. But I knew if I put extra effort into studying, eventually I would be able to over come my language difficulties. It was very surprising to me, that several America studies are also having difficulties speaking their own language. Occasionally I would offer my two-cent to help them out.

I am most heavily interested in seemingly opposite career, music and computes. I believe the most beautiful thing in the world is music. And I find solace in it. I can’t imagine myself living without music it would be like losing my first love. Perhaps surprisingly, I also enjoy computer programming. Deeply attracted to the power of computer languages.

While all of the above activities were important to me. Today, the United State remains American Dream that you could achieve anything if you will to work hard at it.

Parallel People

Many people say that everyone has a clone. Comparing two historical heroes, Gawain and John Wayne can simply prove this age-old theory. John Wayne, a twentieth century Hollywood hero, expresses many similarities to Gawain, a knight who lived in the middle ages as a member of King Arthur’s roundtable. Although both men have many correspondences, they also obtain obvious differences due to the vast variation in time and place of acclimation. Gawain and John Wayne represent one another in many ways. While both of them, throughout life, do their best in attempt to honor their countries, they honor their fathers equally. Also, among their innumerable likenesses, Wayne and Gawain were responsible for partially raising their families when they were just teenagers.

As one of the comparisons between the historical heroes, both were willing to die for their countries. Gawain, when he turned fifteen, was already prepared to become a knight of the roundtable (Springer). He went to Camelot to become an honorable member of King Arthur’s court (World Book Encyclopedia 451). While being a defender of Camelot, Gawain took responsibility for many of the actions of Arthur, the representation of Camelot. In “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” Arthur took on a dare of letting a giant man swing at his head with an axe. Gawain, in honor of his country, replaced him because he believed that the value of his own life was far less than that of King Arthur (Little 16). He volunteered his life for the sake of his country (Bulfinch). On the other hand, Wayne attempted several times to join John Ford’s naval unit. He was rejected because of high school football injuries, but with pure determination, he eventually found a way to help his country (Shepherd 1). He joined the USO (United Service Organization), a committee that supported US troops from WW to go on to fight in Vietnam (Fortunecity). Although the two patriots honored their country in completely different ways, they both did what they did for the same reason, to maintain the well being of their countries.

Not only did the two men honor their country, but they also honored their fathers. John Wayne, who was born with the name of Marion Mitchell Morrison (Shepherd 8), honored his father, Clyde Leonard Morrison, by following in his footsteps and his methods of success in life (Shepherd 15). Wayne always abided by the quote passed down through his family, “Always keep your word, never intentionally insult anyone, and don’t go around looking for trouble.” (Fortunecity). Throughout life, Wayne tried to do the things that his father would be proud of him for. Even though he thought of his father as more of a friend, he still wanted to make him proud (Fortunecity). Although defending his father’s honor in a more physical way than Wayne, Sir Gawain never let anyone steal the reputation of his father, Sir Lot (Springer). Gawain discovered that Sir Pellinore, another knight of the roundtable, had beheaded his father when he rode through Camelot with his head hung from his saddle (Springer 78). Gawain honored his father’s death by torturing and killing Sir Pellinore (Springer 87). Later, Gawain also killed Pellinore’s son, Lamorak to express what happens when someone messes with his family (Springer 8). While Gawain attempts to avenge his father’s death by killing, Wayne utilizes a more peaceful method of honoring his dad. Regardless of the difference in the manner of how they defend their fathers, they both honor their fathers in acts throughout their lives.

Order Custom Parallel People paper

While both Gawain and John Wayne honored their fathers, they helped their younger brothers in other ways. When Wayne was with his little brother, Robert Morrison, the two were called, “The big and little Duke,” by the neighbors as they walked by on their way to school (Shepherd 1). Wayne, at age 1 had to financially support both his brother and himself. He had to get a job to pay for both school clothes and food because his mother’s job did not pay sufficient. At about the same age as when Wayne was supporting his family financially, Gawain supported his brothers mentally and emotionally. He mostly helped to guide his brother Mordred, the result of incest, to find his father and trace his past (Springer). He always looked out for Mordred and Gareth when a scene was too gory for their young eyes (Bulfinch). Looking out for one another was a key factor in both the family of John Wayne and of Gawain.

The characteristics of the two historical heroes create a nearly perfect parallel. While both of their names rhyme and they’re from nearly the same nationality, that is only a foreshadow of the infinite similarities between Gawain and John Wayne (Shepherd 15). In their times of fame, Gawain was known as “the archetype of knightly chivalry and honor,” while Wayne was known as the simplified yet traditional, “The American.” (Bookrags) Of all the comparisons in the world that these two share, one that brings it all together is that everything that they did was for other people. Their selflessness shows that they are both two truly honorable and patriotic men.

The sonnet “Aftermath” by Sylvia Plath reflects the writing style and cynicism of the author. The sonnet is split into two stanzas; the first summarizing the media’s view of the incident, the second showing the victim’s new conditions. Through “Aftermath’s” structure and word choice, Sylvia Plath captures a sense of the public’s selfish interests in turning tragedies into entertainment.

The first stanza paints a detailed picture of the crowd, gathering around the latest incident, each person hoping to receive their fair share of juicy gossip. Each person, thriving to learn new information to share with someone else, and earn their respect. Each one waiting for the “scandal [that] might any minute ooze.” When “no deaths, no prodigious injuries” occurred, the crowd slowly turned away with a lack of interest.

The second stanza refers to “Mother Medea,” who lives in the house. She walks about the area, “taking stock / Of charred shows, sodden upholstery,” and her belongings. Although her life was not taken by this tragedy, she must start anew for all of her material possessions had been taken by the fire.

The crowd, who feel as though they deserved a death out of this tragedy, take everything they can from the lady and her sorrow and walk away. They feel “Cheated of the pyre and the rack / The crowd suck[ed] her last tear and turn[ed] away.”

The sonnet is about how the general public will deny the victim any sympathy, and concentrate on their selfish attempt at receiving information. The crowd would be awarded the credit for receiving the information first hand, rather than hearing it on the news, or on the radio. It is also about how humans naturally tend to feed off of the tragedies in other people’s lives, to make their own feel and look more glamorous to others.

This is also true for the September 11th, 001 tragedies, as well as the Oregon City kidnappings that occurred earlier this year. While the entire nation was suffering the great losses endured, the media placed their noses where they should not have been. Television cameras and stations, radio broadcasters, and newspaper journalists all crowded around the sufferers so they could benefit from the sky rocketing of ratings and the sales of more papers. The crowd in “Aftermath” and the media both behaved in a similar manner; one that paid attention only to their own benefactors.

Plath used word choice to paint a cynical picture; one where everyone’s priorities consisted only of their own. She used words such as “loiter”, “stare”, “smoke-choked”, “blood-spoor” and others to help create this atmosphere or negativity. Plath’s unique style of rhyme, as well as the literal meaning of this poem gives it the cynical ambiance.

“Aftermath” really is about the selfish outlook of others, and their unwillingness to help another person out without benefit. This sonnet may be intended to open the eyes of these individuals, or to warn others of their intentions, but the meaning will still be the same. Those who carry a positive outlook on life will be harshly jolted back to reality by the cruel intentions of others.

Money has an enormous impact on how people make decisions. People are bombarded in society with visions of being extremely happy if they have lots of money. There is always some form of the desire for wealth in the decisions that most people make everyday. The two books that I studied skinny legs and all by Tom Robbins and Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, both had examples that money is a dominant influence on peoples lives.

People only views things in terms of how they will benefit them financially.

“They dont get it,” complained Boomer. “Cant they comprehend that not everythings done for a paycheck? That sometimes you just make a thing cause you wanna see how itll turn out, cause you have a feeling in your gut that it oughta be made?” (Robbins, 117)

-People couldn’t understand why anyone would do anything but try to gain wealth.

“Patty knew who Dwayne was. Dwayne didn’t know who Patty was. Patty’s heart beat faster when she waited on himbecause Dwayne could solve so many of her problems with the money and power he had. He could give her a fine new house and new automobiles and nice clothes and a life of leisure” (Vonnegut, 140)

-She only saw Dwayne’s money and not him. She desired to have all the money and materials Dwayne possessed because she thought that is all she would need to be happy.

The idea of having lots of money was a great feeling because people saw money as the most important thing in life.

“One force, surely, was the lust for money, which infested so many people. They could have a lot of fun with fifty thousand dollars, or so they believed. But they had to earn money the hard way, just a few dollars at a time” (Vonnegut, 4)

-People believed that all they needed in life was to be rich and then everything would be ok. They would just be happy, not working and having the money. Their desire for money reflected on their job and their attitude towards work.

Money became important enough that it determined a lot more than just how people lived, it could determine whether people lived at all.

“During periods of so-called economic depression, for example, societies suffered for want of all manner of essential goods, yet investigation almost invariably disclosed that there were plenty of goods available. Plenty of coal in the ground, corn in the fields, wool on the sheep. What was missing was not materials, but an abstract unit of measurement called “money.” (Robbins, 408)

-Money was not the most important thing, in fact money can be sometimes the least important thing. People go hungry and people get sick and die, because of a lack of money. There’s no shortage of supplies, just of a symbol.

Money was a way to measure an items value. It was suppose to be a symbol of exchange.

“The loony legacy of money was that the arithmetic by which things were measured had become more valuable than the things themselves.” (Robbins, 408)

-The symbol known as money, had become more desirable than what it was used for. It was meant as an intermediary for exchange, but people started to desire it rather than the items themselves.

The only thing money gives you is the freedom of not worrying about money.

Fight club sees money as one of the least important things in life. We are told that money is an important part of life by companies and by influential people, but it shouldn’t be. We should try to improve our lives, by focusing on everything but attaining money. Rather than improving the number of items we have, we should improve the quality of our lives.

Conclusion

“…at the moment of our death. As we lie there, helpless, beyond distraction, electricity stealing out of our brains like a con man stealing out of a sucker’s neighborhood, it will occur to many of us that everything we ever did, we did for money. And at that instant, right before the stars blink off, we will, according to what else we may have learned in life, burn with an unendurable regretor have us a good silent laugh at our own expense.” (robbins, 1)

What is the average weight? What is healthy? How do these two things compare to the standards society has on health and beauty today? What do you see when you look in the mirror? And why don’t people see regular people in fashion TV advertisements? I personally think that advertisers should introduce people of all weight sizes into the fashion advertisements. Throughout history, women’s roles have been to make themselves as attractive to others as possible. Although fashion and physical values have changed over time, this drive has remained constant. The recent change of women’s extreme thinness has become a topic of concern in the health department. This issue starts as early as the first day a person was born. Gender differences, the surrounding environment, and the pressure of ideal image are almost impossible to escape due mostly to the everyday occurrences that one encounters. Roberta Seid’s “Too ‘Close to the Bone’ The Historical Context for Women’s Obsession with Slenderness” discusses both present ideals and those of previous time periods, as well as the negative effects these standards have had on women. Andy Vu’s “The Struggle for a Healthy Body Image” presents a similar topic, but it’s related specifically to both male and female college students.

S. Almond’s “The Influence of the Media on Eating Disorders” tries to make the point of how everyone was made to be unique. Almond says that products are often advertise to promote the ideal body image. A lecture by Susan Rausch touched on both college students and society as a whole, offering statistical data on eating disorders and societal views on physical appearance.

And In Ann Marie Cussins “The Role of Body Image in Women’s Mental Health” she discusses the issue from a standpoint aspect.

Rausch begins her speculation with a question Why is it that people treasure variations in the magnificence of nature, but not in the concept of beauty in ourselves? Each expert comments the fact that over the past 40 years, the representations of beauty such as models, actresses, and Miss America, have been getting thinner and thinner. These symbols of perfect beauty are wearing sizes 1, 0 and even smaller (Vu 1), portraying only the thinnest 5 to 10 percent of Americas that fit in this size category (Seid 47). Each agrees that the current average American is now considered “overweight”. However, Seid and Raush support this statement with statistics 0 to 5 percent of women do not feel they meet the “standard”, leading millions of women to think abnormal of themselves (Seid 47). Rausch mentioned that 47 percent of women with normal weight feel they are overweight (Raush’s speech outline ).

Seid mentions that women’s self-image successfulness, and survival could be determine mostly by the way the look. As for men, success is based on how they act and what they accomplish (Seid 480). The way a person looks and their personality determines the person they are able to interact with. In society today, women are viewed as beautiful and vulnerable whereas men are classified as strong and powerful. Cussins explains that women are unconsciously dissatisfied with their motherly role toward daughters (Cussins ). One of Cussins’s patient talk about her unhappiness with the problem of bulimia, and how bulimia effected the relationship with her mother and family. The patient tries to develop a healthy diet to make her mother happy but she throws up everything she eats or she will feel depressed. Not only is it hard for the patient but also for the mother since she feels that her child is communicating less in-depth with her (Cussins 110-111). This only one of few effects that a person has to deal with if he or she tries to achieve the ideal weight. Almond said that “constant media pressures can lead to body dissatisfaction, which may result in distorted eating patterns”. He also says that the media portraits the “ideal figure”, making women think that they are overweight because they don’t look like the person in the advertisement, resulting in body dissatisfaction. He points out that products are advertise displaying the ideal body image in hope that people will purchase the product thinking that they are also going to look like that person in the display. Trying to achieve this can lead to “depression, stress, guilt, shame, insecurity, unhappiness, and lower self-confidence” (Almond 67). The most recent transformation in clothing styles have also played a key role as well; Seid states that the more revealing fashion allows no compensation for the body “underneath”. With men the issue tends to be on a different side of the spectrum bigger is better. In the attempt to “bulk up” and play the man’s role, many turn to the use of steroids, which are harmful to the body and can produce many serious problems, including cancer (Vu ).

We must now look at the main problems in order to find a way to solve this problem, it has already become a social disease and people need to realize that trying to achieve the “ideal size” is almost impossible (Vu ), and even if they do, the damages they do to their bodies can make them feel worse than when the first started to lose weight, it could even lead to death. The question that remains is weather the advertisement individuals and institutions have truly looked into, and understood, the effects of such ideal standards, and when, or if, changes will ever take place. The aftermath that occurs while trying to aim for the so called ‘ideal’ image. And how family and friends affect the way you feel about your body.

In the attempt to become the “perfect” woman, each expert holds that many put themselves trough both psychological and physical pain. Though they each emphasize eating disorders, they do so in different ways. Seid speaks of eating disorders on a whole, relating them to current dieting practices. She states that effects of deprivation can be found in many dieters tension, irritability, pre-occupation with food, and exhaustion are all present (Seid 478). Vu asserts that a lack of nutrition can lead to the consequence of disorders such as anorexia and bulimia anorexia can force the body to start feeding on itself, bulimia can cause damage to the teeth and esophagus, and both are life threatening (Vu ). When the person tries to starve itself to lose weight the body might develop anorexia and bulimia; causing the individual to throw up everything he or she might eat. Men use steroids in to deal with body dissatisfactions. Excess of this drug may lead to “brain cancer, liver damage and heart attacks”, even young healthy men can be effected (Vu ). The question now lies on whether or not the person pays a high price in trying to achieve the ‘ideal’ image. All of the experts say the price is not worth it. Rausch states in Vu’s article that the advertising industry promotes a body image that is “biologically” impossible to achieve and “live up to” (Vu ). Seid says that “numerous studies demonstrate that the majority of the “fat” cannot slim down permanently. The problem is not their lack of willpower, but the unreasonable expectation placed on them to weight a certain amount” (Seid 478).

I personally think that the effects of trying to achieve the “ideal” image is not worth paying the price for. The person is damaging the body instead of trying to help it. Some people lose weight only to gain it back later, so what is the point of doing it. I think that each person has a different body type and metabolism, some people can’t lose weight even if they try to, leaving them depressed and anxious in the “journey” towards the perfect body. Bulimia and anorexia are horrible diseases to deal with because of the things they do to the body. I’m not suggesting that if your fat, you can’t exercise or live a healthy life, I think this can be achieved. Just look at the line men playing football, summon wrestlers, they are “big” but at the same time they are healthy. People cannot just look at the body from the outside, but from the inside. Skinny people are not always healthy, sometimes they are malnourish, or have diseases such as the ones pointed out by Vu, anorexia and bulimia.

Media has greatly influence people into falling into the trap of what is in style and what is not. Teenage girls are affected by compulsion to receive a degree of thinness that they see in models (Cussins ). Women who look at fashion magazines wanted to weight less and are more worry about getting fatter than the women who read news magazines (Rausch ). “There has been a shift in the media portrayal of the ‘ideal’ body size for women, from the voluptuous curved figure of Marilyn Monroe in the 150s to a thinner ‘waif-like’ look of Kate Moss in the 180s” (Almond 67). Over the years the media advertising models have been getting thinner and thinner; making women more dissatisfied because they want to look like that “girl” in the advertisement. The media have developed the ideal body shape in the hope that it will create more sales of the product that they are trying to sell. But it seems like the advertisement and media industries are not caring about how a person feels in trying to achieve the ideal body. By promoting the ideal body the media contribute to eating disorders (Almond 67).

I believe that the media is the most contributing factor to this problem. They have develop the ideal image of what a person should look like but most of it is false advertisement.

I never see a “fat” person on TV advertising about a beauty product or a new fashion design. When you flip the pages of most magazines all you see is thin women advertising the new Victoria’s Secret new collection. Why doesn’t the media use people of all sizes in their advertisements to fill up the needs of all people. I’m not saying I don’t like the present people in the advertisements, to be honest, as a man I like to see “hot” women in advertisements but we have to look at the reality that the people need to see more variety of “sizes” to satisfy the kinds of people who are looking for something like them, and not making them feel bad because they are looking at something that is “impossible” to achieve.

Now the question that remains is how can we start solving this problem of the ‘ideal’ imagine. Short says that “Once society starts to realize that society’s stereotypes are just stereotypes, and actually not ideal situations, then people will start to find a cure” (Vu ).

Seid suggest that “we recultivate our tastes and find a saner middle ground where our bodies can round out with more life, flesh, and health; where we can relish the fruits of our prosperity without self-punishment” (Seid 48). Seid also says that people must get rid or the thought of the ‘ideal’ image, “because it is misguided and destructive”, she says (Seid 484). Cussins suggest that psychotherapist need a new approach in treating eating disorders. Cussins says that many doctors threat the eating disorder as a second symptom to the eating disorder, making the patient have to come to many visits in a lengthy recuperation. The problem is that the lengthy treatment has a high drop out rate. “A specialized service where a woman feels that her initial contact gives her hope through feeling that someone is immediately making sense of her problems would avoid the high drop-out rate of those who take a tentative first step”, Cussin suggest (Cussing 11-114).

I agree with all the suggestions that have been made by all of the experts, a therapy that understands the patient’s psychological problem with weight needs to be an option for the patient, not just one therapy that looks at the problem from the “outside”. Having the support of family and friends should also help the person accept who they are. This is very important because sometimes even family members put the person down, and the family is the most important thing in a person’s life. If the person does not have the support of the family than it is going to be even harder for he or she to deal with the problem of the ‘ideal’ obsession.

And finally, I think the media contribute the most damage to the ‘not ideal’ people. When I’m watching TV all I see in the fashion advertisements is thin models, not only on television but also in most fashion magazines. I am not “fat”, but I can not even imagine how an “ever size” person feels when they see mostly thin people advertising something that is not fitting for them, too small, or just not their “taste”. I think that the media should advertise products, and fashion for all types of people thin, oversized, pretty, ugly. This way of advertising would please all stereotypes, and I honestly think that it would help reduce the problem that itself has created the “ideal image”.

The obsession over thinness has been in the past, is here in the present, and will be in the future. Based on the sources synthesized, if people don’t do something soon to change this “ideology”, it will take many centuries to get over something that has evolved for hundreds of years. Fashion, media, family members, and peer pressure will continue to be major factors in the obsession with slenderness. As a result, as long as these issues are still here, the dangerous aftermath will continue to plague Americans for centuries to come “We stand poised between a past for which we have lost respect and a future we must now struggle to envision” (Seid 485).
